Book Description
In 1973, Fischer Black, Myron Scholes, and Robert Merton pointed out that securities issued by a corporation can be priced as claims whose values are contingent on the value of the enterprise as a whole. The notion of treating corporate securities as contingent claims is intrinsically important, but it is also important because it integrates a variety of otherwise loosely related topics, including equity risk, credit risk, seniority and subordination, early redemption of callable debt, and conversion of convertible debt.
Bringing together developments from the past thirty years in contingent valuation, this book examines the relative value of securities in a corporation’s capital structure, including debt of different priorities, convertible debt, common stock, and warrants. The book emphasizes the importance of accounting for the institutional characteristics of default, bankruptcy, and voluntary recapitalization of a financially distressed firm, as well as the exercise of managerial discretion in calling debt for early redemption, servicing debt, paying dividends to common shareholders, and undertaking strategic actions such as leveraged recapitalizations and spin-offs.

Customer Reviews:
Horrible.......2007-08-07
This narrow minded, interrogation oriented guide is simply horrible. The only person to recommend this to is the job seeker -- to prepare you for the more mean spirited interviews. My advice would be to walk away, but if you really want the job, then awareness of this sort of interview practice might help you get hired.
As another reviewer observed, if companies really do follow this sort of advice, then they deserve the people they hire. Now, some companies may want a team of willing white shirts with heads full of programming language details. If you're one of those, buy the book. However, note that ascertaining real competence, creativity and aptitude take a back seat here; it's form over substance.
When I think about the very best "techies" I've hired and worked with over the past 30 years, many would not successfully pass an interview process modelled after the advice in this book. Unbelievable. The credentials for the author to write this book, as far as I can tell, are these: IT executive and horse trainer. I rest my case.
abysmal.......2007-01-14
I often interview programmer candidates, so I bought this book to calibrate my interviewing style and skills. I am appalled at the advice in the book -- I guess I should hope other firms do interview this way, so they'll gather the programmers I definitely don't want and leave the good ones for me.
Besides the defects other reviews have already mentioned (in this day and age, if you only hire candidates who show up in suit&tie as this book recommends, you'll end up missing many of the best techies!), some parts are positively creepy -- e.g., under "Gleaning Demographics" it claims that, while some questions are illegal, you should still slily ask questions to hiddenly gather that kind of information, since aspects such as whether the candidate has small kids (illegal to ask about that) should "factor strongly into a hiring decisions" -- so, ask what the candidate does to relax, that will dupe them into revealing whether they have a family.
Disgusting, really, and I find myself hoping somebody ends up in lots of trouble for practicing such weaselly duplicity -- meanwhile, all I can recommend to anybody but outright weasels is to carefully avoid this horrible book.
Nice to have book - If you need quick questions on C++ and Oracle.......2006-11-08
This book certainly helps managers interviewing programmers who claim expertise with many languages. If you own a J2EE shop and looking for Oracle and C++ expertise and need tough questions to ask....the questions prescribed in this book is good. Also note, this book does'nt help you as a reference for any other practical use of those languages.
Another Good Interview Guide.......2006-09-01
This is another good book in the Job Interview series from Rampant. As with the other books, this book gives both the employer and the candidate guidance in areas such as work experience, personal appearance and education.
The questions that are provided in the book give a good base for the employer to ask the candidate. Of course, each company will need to modify or use only the questions that they will need.
I would recommended this book to any employer or candidate seeking a programming job in one of the languages covered.
too general to be useful.......2006-02-16
The advice on interviewing is very general and can be found to the same detail with google. The advice is all useful, but it's not worth the price and the style is a little goofy for what I expected to be a more professional book.
The technical interview questions are atrocious. As others have commented, the "easy" questions are useful (e.g. how do you indicate comments?) and some of the solutions to the "hard" questions are incorrect (e.g. they try to illustrate a common C pointer bug in correctly written code).
The book just lacks content.

Conducting the UNIX Job Interview: IT Manager Guide with UNIX Interview Questions (IT Job Interview series).......2007-07-29
I bought this book because I get job interview anxiety and several interviews coming up. The book I really wanted on Amazon for IT UNIX technical interviews was backordered. So I orderd this book instead and used the book to try and understand how I might be interviewed. The first part of the book is silly nonsense and you can skip past it and go directly to the meat of the interview questions. I found that most of the questions I was asked in several interviews were in this book. I was able to have the confidence going into the interview to not have my brain freeze up like I normally do when faced with several IT staff seated across from me waiting for an answer. I got three job offers and I had a hard time deciding which one to take!
Great and has some good interview questions.......2006-05-05
I went through this book quickly. Reading the first few pages I have not seen great differences between this book and the other one on Oracle job interview. The only part of this book that I found very useful is the interview questions. The "SYSADMIN" job interview questions are well-written.
Great UNIX and Linux job interview questions and answers.......2004-08-05
This is an excellent book for any IT manager who needs to find a unix systems administrator or Linux systems administrator. I was impressed with the coverage for the pre-interview stages and how you can identify those job candidates that are most-likely-to-succeed in the job role.
Better still, I was impressed with the UNIX job interview questions and Linux interview questions and answers. The job interview questions are designed for a telephone interview, and the IT manager can just ask the questions and compare the responses to the "ideal" answer.
Overall, this book is a real timesaver for anyone hiring a UNIX SA or a Linux System Administrator.

Mathematical Handbook for Scientists and Engineers: Definitions, Theorems, and Formulas for Reference and Review
ASIN: 0387989730 |
Book Description
This is a major revision of a classic, best selling reference book. Originally published by the American Institute of Physics under the title "Physics Vade Mecum" in 1981, and then the second edition in 1989 with the new title "A Physicist's Desk Reference", this third edition has been completely updated and modernized to reflect current modern physics. The book is a concise compilation of the most frequently used physics data and formulae with their derivations. This revision has six more chapters than the second edition, outdated chapters dropped, and new chapters added on atmospheric physics, electricity and magnetism, elementary particle physics, fluid dynamics, geophysics, nonlinear physics, particle accelerators, polymer physics, and quantum theory. There is a new last chapter on practical laboratory data. The references and bibliographies have been updated. This book is an indispensable tool for the researcher, professional and student in physics as well as other scientists who use physics data. The editors of this volume are Richard Cohen, author of the first two chapters of PDR and the "Physics Quick Reference Guide"; David Lide, one of the editors of the previous two editions and the editor of the "CRC Handbook of Physics and Chemistry"; and George Trigg, editor of the "Encyclopedia of Physics" and the "Encyclopedia of Applied Physics" (VCH). The market for this classic reference book includes the practicing scientist, including engineers, chemists, and biologists; and students.
Customer Reviews:
Keep up with physics.......2004-06-02
It is difficult for physicists to keep track of the latest findings in their field. By necessity, if you work in physics, you often have to specialise. Yet for intellectual reasons, if nothing else, it is good to keep up with what is in your occupation.
For decades, the American Institute of Physics has tried to help, with earlier versions of this book. This is the latest update, from 2003. Compared to, say, the 1981 edition, there have been large changes. Perhaps foremost is the current prominence of computational ideas. Reflecting the decades-long surge of Moore's Law and the now ubiquitous computing power available to most physicists. So much so that simulations are now a de facto equal partner of theory and observation.
The book also describes the current boundaries of particle physics, with updates on recent accelerator capabilities and results. If progress seems naggingly slow here, remember the sheer cost of those accelerators and the long lead time between design and first light.

Book Description
This new edition of the definitive Pascal reference updates the text with the most recent revisions of the ISO Pascal standard, performed by Working Group 2 of the ISO community, since the standard was formally ap- proved in 1983. This reversion of the ISO standard resolved differences between it and the American (ANSI) standard, and these as well as other changes are subsequently reflected in this new edition. It should be noted that in 1984 the third edition of this book was modified with respect to the standard while retaining the readability and elegance which originally set it apart from the standard. This book consists of two parts: The User Manual, and the Revised Report. The User Manual is directed to those who have some familiarity with computer programming, and who wish to get acquainted with the language Pascal. The style of the User Manual is that of a tutorial, and many examples are included to demonstrate the various features of Pascal. Summarizing tables and syntax specifications are among the Appendices. The Report serves as the ultimate, concise reference for both programmers and implementors. It describes Standard Pascal which constitutes a common base between various implementations of the language.
Customer Reviews:
The classic.......2005-08-05
If you remember Pascal, you're probably dating yourself. I sure remember it. Reading this book is a real bit of nostalgia.
Pascal was originally intended as a teaching language only. It's wide commercial acceptance was a bit of a surprise. Many millions of lines of commercial Pascal appeared in the 80s, and I admit I wrote a few tens of thousands of them. Funny thing was that none of the commercial Pascal compilers were pure ISO Pascal. All of them had some kind of non-standard extensions. Pascal was OK for about 98% of systems programming tasks, but that last two percent dealt with device drivers, multithreading, absolute memory addresses, and other stuff that the academic language never needed.
These days, Jensen and Worth isn't the Bible of programming any more. Well, maybe the Old Testament, but the world's moved on. (Remember "railroad" syntax charts? They're still here.) I need the historical information, though, and that's about the only reason you'd need this.
//wiredweird
The definitive yet readable standard for Pascal.......2004-11-28
This book is a complete and authorative definition of the ISO Standard Pascal language. Unlike the official ISO standards document, this is highly readable, with explanations and examples. The ISO Standard Pascal language is implemented by most of today's highest-quality compilers, including GNU Pascal, Prospero Pascal, Compaq Pascal, Dr. Pascal, and pix. The newer Extended Pascal language is a proper superset of the Standard Pascal language described in this book.
Old, but Still Useful to Delphi Programmers.......2000-08-19
The book that *defines* Pascal, the seed of the underlying Delphi language. Use it to get a concise definition for the procedural parts of Delphi, while learning linked lists, binary trees, pointers, and more. You'll have to work with this text, (i.e., think!), but it is still the most straight-forward presentation of the Pascal language.

Book Description
Since the late 1960s, there has been a revolution in robots and industrial automation, from the design of robots with no computing or sensorycapabilities (first-generation), to the design of robots with limited computational power and feedback capabilities (second-generation), and the design of intelligent robots (third-generation), which possess diverse sensing and decision making capabilities. The development of the theory of intelligent machines has been developed in parallel to the advances in robot design. This theory is the natural outcome of research and development in classical control (1950s), adaptive and learning control (1960s), self-organizing control (1970s) and intelligent control systems (1980s). The theory of intelligent machines involves utilization and integration of concepts and ideas from the diverse disciplines of science, engineering and mathematics, and fields like artificial intelligence, system theory and operations research. The main focus and motivation is to bridge the gap between diverse disciplines involved and bring under a common cover several generic methodologies pertaining to what has been defined as machine intelligence. Intelligent robotic systems are a specific application of intelligent machines. They are complex computer controlled robotic systems equipped with a diverse set of visual and non visual sensors and possess decision making and problem solving capabilities within their domain of operation. Their modeling and control is accomplished via analytical and heuristic methodologies and techniques pertaining to generalized system theory and artificial intelligence. Intelligent Robotic Systems: Theory, Design and Applications, presents and justifies the fundamental concepts and ideas associated with the modeling and analysis of intelligent robotic systems. Appropriate for researchers and engineers in the general area of robotics and automation, Intelligent Robotic Systems is both a solid reference as well as a text for a graduate level course in intelligent robotics/machines.

This is what happens to Jen when she applies to become a BBC researcher and comes face to face with Stanley Highshore, top-ranking BBC executive and spouse of a Tory MP, also know as 'Stapled Stan'. But now Stan is beset by problems. The production suite has fallen foul of a bunch of eco-warriors and his secret sex life might not be secret for much longer. Stan enlists Jen as his private investigator/protector. It soon becomes clear that the local aquatic shop, Koi Korner, is a front for much a darker business. Comic, fast-paced, edgy and peopled with a fantastic cast of weirdos and misfits, NIRVANA BITES is a brilliant debut from a daring new talent.
