Book Description
Customer Reviews:
So you want a high performance team?.......2001-04-13
Not the easiest book to get through if you're not a psychologist, it nevertheless provides interesting and useful insight for teams operating in high tempo environments. Although TADMUS was geared towards dangerous, high stakes professions, its findings are applicable to teams who do not regular face life-and-death situations. Especially useful --since so little is written on it elsewhere -- is the insight into effective team dynamics and how to train to development them. Leaders who profess or aspire to have high performance teams in any realm -- military or commercial -- should take the time to learn the lessons of the study this book describes.
Great resource for developers.......2000-06-29
One of the best training resources I have encountered that specifically addresses strategies and techniques for developing training systems for people working in stressful environments. The compilation is mostly concise, well edited and easy to absorb. Within each paper, each author provides lessons learned from their experience also makes the book very usable as a reference. The text does a good job of outlining the USN's Tactical Decision Making Under Stress (TADMUS) project, and provides a good balance of topics dedicated to both research and application. I am not a researcher, so I could not evaluate the work and methodologies from a scientific standpoint. However, I found the text very usable from the training developer's viewpoint, particularly Parts II and III which are devoted to individual and team-level training. Others seem to find it useful as well - after ordering the first copy, we have subsequently had to purchase two more to meet the demand of our development staffers!

Book Description
This interdisciplinary volume explores the application of techniques of evidence and inference across a variety of fields.
Book Description
This classic book is essential reading for all those interested in the development of modern physics. Sir Arthur Eddington’s account of the general theory of relativity, ‘without,’ as he says in his preface, ‘introducing anything very technical in the way of mathematics, physics or philosophy’, was first published in the exciting days of 1920 soon after the first objective tests of the theory had demonstrated its validity. The book was at once received with acclamation by reviewers and remains today one of the simplest and most straightforward accounts in print. The reviewer in the Athenaeum described it as ‘a masterly book. The arrangement, the vigour and ease of the reasoning, the felicity of illustration, the clear, flexible prose and (we must mention it) the wit, make this book one of the most adequate and engaging attempts at the non-technical exposition of a scientific theory that it has ever been our good fortune to encounter.’ This reissue includes a foreword by Sir Hermann Bondi, FRS, giving a brief appraisal of the book, and placing it in its historical and scientific context.
Customer Reviews:
A time piece.......2004-04-16
Very clear, straightforward presentation of GR in the spirit of Einstein and also Schrödinger, easy to read. But also too easy to miss the main points of the physics/geometry (see Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler) while becoming an expert at manipulating tensors in general coordinate systems. Very nice presentation of parallel transport and Weyl's formulation of gauge transformations. Better, more recent treatments using awareness of Lie algebras show the connection of curvature with noncommuting translations/operators, and emphasize the importance of relativistic invariance and local coordinate systems (physics). Einstein wrote of general covariance as if it would be a physical principle (it isn't), and this confusion wasn't cleared up for a long time.
Great learning from one of the greatest of modern astronome.......2003-05-17
First off, this is the guy who made the famous remark when he was asked "Is it true you are among the three people who understand relativity" and he responded, "I wonder who is the third!". The Astronomer Royal, Eddington was counted on as a very good mathematician by even mathematicians (Hardy for instance) and an even better physicist. He was embroiled (now legend) with Chandrasekhar in the thirties on the quantum mechanics of dying stars. Chandra worked extensively with Eddington and described his writing style in glowing terms.
When he writes, you don't get the feeling of pomp in his style, considering his stature. On the contrary his style is very engaging and leaves you impressed! His mathematical treatment to the relativity is even more accessible!
Fantastic Book!!!!
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful explanation of hard stuff.......2007-05-15
Eddington explains general relativity much better than Einstein himself. The Master's book for general readers is frustratingly uninformative. Leaving the math to the physicists, Sir Arthur starts with commonly experienced phenomena, proceeding step-by-step through the simpler but still mind-blowing concepts of special relativity, arriving finally at the truly brain-twisting world of general relativity. That's where gravity and black holes live. The truth of these ideas is really beyond the comprehension of 3-D organisms like us. The mathematicians can work out the mechanics and the details, but none of us can really quite "get it." Einstein gives up on the task early, but Eddington sticks with it, taking the reader much farther into Einstein's explanation of the reality in which we - all unknowing - live.

Book Description
Why, in a scientific age, do people routinely turn to astrologers, mediums, cultists, and every kind of irrational practitioner rather than to science to meet their spiritual needs? The answer, according to Richard J. Bird, is that science, especially biology, has embraced a view of life that renders meaningless the coincidences, serendipities, and other seemingly significant occurrences that fill people's everyday existence.
Evolutionary biology rests on the assumption that although events are fundamentally random, some are selected because they are better adapted than others to the surrounding world. This book proposes an alternative view of evolving complexity. Bird argues that randomness means not disorder but infinite order. Complexity arises not from many random events of natural selection (although these are not unimportant) but from the "playing out" of chaotic systems -- which are best described mathematically. When we properly understand the complex interplay of chaos and life, Bird contends, we will see that many events that appear random are actually the outcome of order.
Customer Reviews:
A Thought-Provoking Book.......2005-10-24
Bird makes a strong case for the use of Chaos theory and Fractals to model life. But he sometimes goes too far and seems to ascribe more power to the mathematics than it actually has; he makes it sound mystical at times. On page 266, the paragraph starting with Chomsky is very profound but isolated and not developed in the remainder of the text. All in all, I recommend the book.
Critique of Neo-Darwinism .......2005-04-29
This fascinating voyage braiding evolutionary thinking with chaos theory starts with a cogent critique of current Neo-Darwinism in a fashion reminiscent of Robert Wesson's _Beyond Natural Selection_. Students of evolution are seldom aware of the criticisms of Darwin springing from scientists themselves, or of the attempts to really grapple with the problems without the distractions of the current Darwin debate, which is mostly propaganda.

Book Description
Pearls Before Swine is the hilarious new comic strip tale of two friends: an arrogant, egotistical Rat who thinks he knows it all and a slow-witted Pig who doesn't know any better. Together with Zebra, the activist, and Goat, the reluctant brain, Pearls Before Swine offers caustic commentary on humanity's quest for the unattainable. Smart, witty, and sometimes painfully honest, Pearls Before Swine mocks the flaws and shortcomings of human nature with cynical humor.Pearls Before Swine has been syndicated by United Feature Syndicate since January 2002 and now appears in more than 100 newspapers worldwide. In panel after panel, Pearls Before Swine causes readers to lose themselves in laughter.
Customer Reviews:
Late comer.......2007-07-14
I've only recently become a fan of this strip. I decided to start from the beginning. Darn, this guy's funny!
Pearls before swine are great........2007-06-02
These books are addictive.Great comics! The only thing wrong with these books is that there is too much duplication of comics between the various books.
Stephan reings supreme.......2006-03-19
Stephan Pastis is the greatest cartoonist working today. BLT's Taste So Darn Good continues his run of high quality, insightful, funny, cutting edge cartoon humour. Highly recommended.
Nothing Better!!!.......2006-02-16
Simply said....I believe there's no comic out there today that can beat Pearls Before Swine. This is what humor is about and Pastis does it day in day out. From the egocentric and nefarious Rat, to the pitiful yet sympathetic Pig, his characters embody that sort of everyday day humor that lurks within us, bright or dark, hitting home every time.
Like Pizza and Sex.......2006-02-01
I once heard a comedian say that Pizza was like Sex - Even when it's bad, it's pretty good.
Pearls before Swine is the same way. It's one of the most consistently funny comic strips available today. In our current landscape of daily comics, most strips will tread water with mediocre humor, punctuated by truly funny moments. Pearls, on the other hand, is almost always truly funny, punctuated by inspired, laugh-out-loud, laughing until it hurts moments.
Pearls is full of painfully bad puns, dark comedy, and a brilliant perspective on the silly nature of man.
Book Description
Chris Griffin takes the spotlight, as he offers his wisdom on all things Chris! Mainly dealing with an angry monkey in his closet! More antics from the twisted mind of Matt Fleckenstein and the wonderful world of the Family Guy!
Customer Reviews:
For Hard Core Fans Only..........2007-01-12
It's a comic book that's over priced... but I did laugh out loud a couple times in it. Doesn't really have much of a re-read value, but like I said, if you're a real hard core fan... get it, you'll laugh (although out of the 3 comics... this was probably the poorest one).
It's alright.......2007-01-10
They are short comics for the huge Family Guy fan. Not worth reading more than once though.

Customer Reviews:
engrossing page-turner.......2003-03-28
I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are believable and engaging and the details that show the business of product promotion are both entertaining and thought-provoking. The protagonist's plight is tense but humorous too. I could not put it down.
A true page-turner.......2002-10-25
I started this book late in the afternoon and had to stay up half the night to finish it--I read it straight through since I couldn't put it down. Ann Pritchard captures the intensity of the food industry. I know, since I was a brand manager for a biggie years ago. Good Taste may be little known now, but, boy, it's going to take off like a rocket. If you want a good read, order Good Taste.
Good Taste is Great Fun.......2002-08-13
Spring Flower Patch is an Innocent Abroad, and her adventures when she is swept up into a food promotion tour are very entertaining. Minor characters are not neglected; I particularly enjoy the Latin quips of father Herb Patch.
Good Taste is a great read.......2002-07-29
Everyone will enjoy Good Taste! You'll learn about the food industry while following a cast of unforgettable characters who jump off the page. This would make a good movie. Hope Hollywood reads books. They'd have a winner!!
