Conor Quigley , and Anthony Collins Manufacturer: Hart Publishing (UK) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1841131628 |
Book Description
This book gives a detailed analysis of this ever developing field of Community law. Based primarily on Articles 87 and 88 EC and now supplemented by secondary legislation, in particular Council Regulation (EC) No 659/1999, the European Commission and the Court of Justice have sought to ensure that State aid is directed towards recipients in such a way that the European economy as a whole benefits. This major new work for the first time places State aid law and policy in context with a fully coherent and integrated exposition of the subject.

Unlimited Liability of State-owned Banks Under the Ec Rules of State AIDS
Ulrich Immenga , and Joachim Rudo Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540643141 |
Book Description
The applicability of EC law of state aids to the state`s unlimited liability for Savings Banks and "Landesbanken" is controversial. Legal and political discussions following the Maastricht-II-Treaty tend to assume that liabilities have to be qualified as state aids. However, as the liabilities in question derive from public ownership, they have to be distinguished from securities for corporate debts which might be qualified as state aids under EC law. In this context the book discusses state aids to public companies and the private investor test of the EC Court of Justice. The authors question the EC Commission`s concept to quantify refinancing advantages which are supposed to be achieved by virtue of public liability.

Spectral Analysis and Filter Theory in Applied Geophysics
Burkhard Buttkus Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 3540626743 |
Book Description
This book gives a comprehensive picture of the present stage of development of spectral analysis and filter theory in geophysics. The principles and theories behind classical and modern methods are described and the effectiveness of these methods is assessed; selected examples of their practical application in geophysics are discussed. The modern methods include, for example, spectral analysis by fitting random models to the data, the maximum-entropy and maximum-likelihood spectral analysis procedures, the Wiener and Kalman filters, homomorphic deconvolution, and adaptive procedures for non-stationary processes. This book represents a valuable aid in education and research and for solving practical problems in geophysics and related disciplines.

The Descent of Mind: Psychological Perspectives on Hominid Evolution
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198524196 |
Book Description
To most people it seems obvious that there are major mental differences between ourselves and other species, but there is considerable debate over exactly how special our minds are, in what respects, and which were the critical evolutionary events that have shaped us. Some researchers claim language as a solely human, even defining, attribute, while others claim that only humans are truly conscious. These questions have been explored mainly by archaeologists and anthropologists until recently, but this volume aims to show what psychologists have to say on the evolution of mind. The book begins with a thorough overview of what is known of the non-primate mind and its evolution. Following this, an international range of experts discuss in temporal sequence the human mind at various stages of evolution, beginning with the pre-hominids of 20 million years ago and ending with contemporary human behaviour. Accessible to students and researchers alike in psychology, anthropology, evolution, archaeology, and ethology, The Descent of Mind provides a range of provocative answers to the timeless question of what it means to be human.Customer Reviews:
Lucid introduction to evolutionary psychology.......2002-09-24
Taken as a whole this collection argues most explicitly for the evolution of mind. In particular, the primary challenge is to understand the evolutionary development of personality, theory of mind, metamind, social mind, intelligence and language. I was continually amazed at the blending of paleontology, neurology, animal studies, and childhood development into a synthetic whole. The importance of social context in hominid evolution, especially in the development of semantics and grammar, was presented in a clear and convincing manner.
Evolutionary psychology must deal with a breadth of data that is astonishing. Mastery of this interdisciplinary approach may be beyond most readers, but Corballis and Lea offer a diverse collection capable if whetting the appetite of almost everyone. It is my pleasure to recommend this book for the curious, the analytical, and the theorist. Within these pages may lie the kernel of a meta-narrative for all of psychology.

Unoccupied Electronic States: Fundamentals for Xanes, Eels, Ips and Bis (Topics in Applied Physics)
J. C. Fuggle Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387541624 |
Book Description
In the past two decades our understanding of the occupied electronic states of solides has undergone a revolution, while our knowledge of the unoccupied states has lagged behind. This is now changing, owing to the progress in techniques such as X-ray absorption and inverse photoemission, and a complete picture is beginning to emerge. This book presents the theoretical and experimental basis of the subject of unoccupied electronic states. It begins by describing the modern theoretical picture of unoccupied states, starting with the single-particle picture and going on to various aspects of many-body interaction and correlation. The theory of modern spectroscopic methods (XANES, EELS,IPS and BIS) used to study unoccupied states is discussed and examples are given to illustrate these techniques. This volume stresses the unity of the concepts required to understand both occupied and unoccupied states and demonstrates the importance of unoccupied states for our comprehension of the optical, thermal and transport properties of materials.

The Guru of Malad
Gordon Epperson Manufacturer: Xlibris Corporation ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1401051383 |
Book Description
The Guru of Malad is a tale of extraordinary happenings in a small Southern town of the 1930s. The staid routines of its citizens are shaken and disrupted by the return of Robert Dowland, who proves to be a catalyst for emotional excitement and turmoil. In this tale of high comedy and gentle satire, the lives of a colorful cast of eccentrics undergo profound changes. The interlocking motifs of sex, academe, and the occult lead inexorably to a miraculous epiphany.Customer Reviews:
So easy to pick up and so hard to put down.......2002-05-16
Excellent reading! Thoroughly recommended!.......2002-04-09
Dr. Robert Dowland returns to Malad from New York City, not quite the success he wanted to be. This physician, pianist, poet and literary critic returns to his roots to, hopefully, accept the Presidency of Cherokee College and the success he so needed.
Gordon Epperson fills his richly inspired book with a well defined and developed assortment of people, each in their own situation, and each leading lives (like us) that are filled with joy, sadness and frustration. One of these characters is a black lady, Doris Williams, hired to be Dr. Dowland's part time housekeeper and cook. At his first sight of Doris, "...he felt the breath go out of him."
And so we have a story of life in the South in the 30's; race relations in the South in the 30's; and one man's image of himself as cosmopolitan, rid of narrow prejudices, who wants very much to be president of a college that did not even admit blacks.
This reviewer could not stop turning the pages of this epic story. Each was a revelation of what was (and could be)---all leading to enlightenment, fulfillment and a miraculous epiphany. Gordon Epperson, internationally known cellist. teacher, poet and story teller has used all of his wisdom and knowledge to produce this heroic novel. In this reviewer's opinion, The Guru Of Malad should be cast as a major motion picture akin to Gone With The Wind!
