Great reference source -- highly recommended.......2002-04-25
I own this book as well as its companion canon on lunar eclipses. I find them both to be convenient and valuable references whenever I need to find information about past or present eclipses (which I do a lot more often than you might imagine).
What I find most useful are the maps of individual eclipses over a 50-year span and the maps of all total and annular eclipses worldwide over the much longer period of 1901-2100.
It's not called a Canon for nothing........1999-11-27
This is the definitive book to take to eclipses. Espenak is the eclipse expert for NASA and has all the math and software to generate the tables which make up this canon.
Everything else one hears or reads about where and when the eclipse will be, is just third through twelfth hand recounting and mis-recounting of the information in this book. It is not fun reading - it is a book of tables of numbers.
But careful reading and interpolation with an accurate map (or a GPS) and an accurate watch will get you the exact local time of second and third contacts and the actual location of centerline.
That doesn't seem like such a big deal until one is actually on the ground the day before the eclipse. One had been unconsciously expecting that somebody locally would have all the information, and then you find out that they had been assuming that you, the rich, educated foreigner, would know.
The actual real information is to be found only in this book. Don't leave home for an eclipse without it.

From the author: Maleic anhydride functionalized PP was prepared in a melt-mixer according to a factorial design. Two levels of maleic anhydride concentration (MA), dicumyl peroxide concentration (DCP), reaction time, and temperature were employed. The isolated and interaction effects of these variables on the degree of functionalization and molecular weights were analyzed. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), titration, and torque measures. The reaction time showed no appreciable effect within the studied range (10 to 20 minutes); however, the other three factors showed significant main effects. MA and temperature presented an important interaction effect on the degree of functionalization and molecular weights. The highest degrees of functionalization were found to be related to the smallest molecular weights.

From the author: Blends of a crystalline vinylidene fluoride copolymer (PVDF) and a polyolefin ionomer were produced by melt mixing and characterized by a variety of techniques to examine the effect of increasing the level of salt formation on morphology. The PVDF component was also grafted with methacrylic acid by irradiating the polymer powder and subsequently treating it with an aqueous monomer solution. The effect of neutralizing the acid in both polymer components to produce the corresponding zinc salt was also investigated. Compatibilization was accomplished by the addition of zinc acetyl acetonate (ZnAcAc) to the mixture. This increased the viscosity of the polyolefin ionomer phase, comparable to that of the PVDF. The viscosity of the grafted PVDF component did not increase appreciably after neutralization with ZnAcAc. The grafted polymer precipitated and formed a particulate dispersion within a largely graft-free polymer matrix. The addition of ZnAcAc to the blend of grafted PVDF and polyolefin ionomer produced a large enhancement in compatibilization, giving rise to the formation of co-continuous phases that contained encapsulated particles of different size and in various locations.

In his essays, Dr. Joseph Golden presents a wide variety of humorous insights on topics ranging from animal rights to visiting the doctor. Dr. Golden, a former arts administrator, also offers a piece on the importance of culture to a community: Art, by attracting clients who invest in other things in the community, is good business. This is the kind of book that you can read many times, each time finding something new. I found this book highly enjoyable, and highly recommend it to anyone who would like to step back and see life from a slightly different angle.
