Well suited to women worried about their financial future.......2001-08-30

OK, I am not a woman, so I am probably not supposed to have read this book. But I thought I would check it out. And I was pleasantly surprised.
The ladies involved in the writing of this book were involved in starting a 'Money Club' investment group. In the course of running this group, they learnt and taught about all the basics of personal finance, including (from the title headings):
* Investment Basics.
* Where To Put Your Money And Why.
* Retirement Planning.
* Buying Insurance.
* Planning Your Husband's (And Your) Estate.
* What To Do When Things Change.
Cover of the topics is fairly thorough. But, as many readers would now, the content of the majority of entry level personal finance books is all pretty standard. So, in the end it is the format and style of writing that makes a good one worth the read. Thankfully, this book is well written - relaxing and interesting to read. The inclusion of lots of personal anecdotes (especially by the members of The Money Club) makes alot of the points easier to understand and absorb. And it really drills home the importance of applying the message of the book.
All in all, a fantastic book for women, especially those 30+ worried about the state of their financial affairs. For those males (or women younger than 30), I might recommend 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Personal Finance in Your 20s And 30s' by Sarah Young Fisher and Susan Shelly, or 'The Wealthy Barber' by David Chilton.

Very good, except for the diamonds........2001-08-29

Melt away your fears of finances with THE MONEY CLUB. I have read a bunch of these index books about wealth, and this one is serviceable, covering most of the basics. What this book has that others don't: it reaches women on a personal level and lets us know WHY we need to start paying attention to our money and our financial futures. The ladies on the cover (members of the NYC based money club) are described just enough so that you get to almost get to know them. Interspersed throughout the text, you read about mistakes that they made before they joined the club and took back control of their lives. This personal touch made me think twice about some subjects which had made my eyes glaze over when I read about them in other books. I found the book very motivating and extraordinarily revealing. We can make a lot of mistakes in our wills and in the way we title assets: these can come back to haunt our heirs if we don't think of certain consequences. I appreciate the concrete illustrations of what can go very, very wrong! There were only a few tidbits that I did not agree with. I do not agree that a woman is helped by thinking of a diamond as a future re-sale item. On the other hand, I liked the suggestion that women who don't have their own sources of income might "ask" their husbands for a few shares of a mutual fund instead of jewelry or whatever is a fashionable marital gift these days. Whether you are a working woman or a Wife with a capital W, this book is full of eye-openers and good advice. Reading The Money Club can be a giant first step to building psychological security about your financial future.

Actually, No Longer a "Secret" But Still Underappreciated.......2001-08-25

First published in 1995 by Oxford University Press, America's Competitive Secret suggests how to utilize women as a management strategy. It was an excellent idea then and an even better idea now as globalization initiatives of American companies increase and intensify. In the Preface, author Judy B. Rosener explains that her book is intended for executives and managers "who want to improve their organization's bottom line, and for women who wonder why their career paths so often seem to be shaped by the fact that they are female." Note the reference to "bottom line." For Rosener, it is prudent to leverage the talents of professional women" inorder to create "more innovative, productive, and profitable organizations." Also, for male executives, the principle of enlightened self-interest is relevant to their own success. It makes absolutely no sense to under-utilize the talents of women professionals, especially as the global economy continues to expand so rapidly and extensively. Rosabeth Kanter agrees: "Whatever the duration and objectives of business alliances,...in the global economy, a well-developed ability to create and sustain fruitful collaborations gives companies a significant competitive leg up." Hence the importance of women.

As Connie Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley suggest in Swim with the Dolphins, the female temperament is better suited than is the male's to concluding "win-win" negotiations, resolving conflicts, reaching consensus, preferring to cooperate and collaborate rather than compete, keeping an open mind, asking direct and relevant but not insulting questions, etc. Rosener describes the female temperament in terms of "consensus building, power sharing, and comfort with ambiguity."

She examines five "stages" through which organizations must proceed if they are to undergo the transformation required by new realities as well as opportunities:

Stage One: Staying Out of Trouble

Stage Two: We Need to React

Stage Three: It's a Case of Survival

Stage Four: It's the Right Thing to Do

Stage Five: It's Part of Our Culture

Females as well as males within an organization will proceed from one stage to the next at varying speeds and within varying timeframes. Fair enough. However, all must reach Stage Five. Rosener recommends that, from both a strategic and financial point of view, structural reorganization "should be undertaken in concert with efforts to rectify female underutilization. Flexibility and diversity are two keys to competitive advantage, and both are closely related to the underutilization issue."

So much in the business world has changed since 1995 when this book was first published. However, many American companies and most companies in other countries have yet to take full advantage of -- and reward appropriately -- the talents of women. The companies which do so have a significant competitive advantage, a "secret weapon" if you will. Professional women know at which companies they will be appreciated and rewarded, where there are the greatest opportunities for their personal as well as professional growth. It is no coincidence that these are the same companies which, year after year, are the most profitable in their respective industries. At least until now, many of our nation's companies seem unaware of or indifferent to this "competitive secret."

A different path.......2006-05-08

I recently lost this book trying to get too many things at once through an airport and have ordered another copy. Not only is this book the type of bridge (between the usual popular words-only description of this subject matter and an upper level/graduate text) that us interested engineers find useful, it is highly recommended for completely dropping the semi-historic approach. Instead this author just starts off with what is known about fundemental physics at the day he writes and goes from there. Although this book can in no sense equip you to "do" particle physics, it creates a semi-quantitative understanding that attaches itself much more completely to my brain than the normal eloquent hand waving. After studying this, I remembered the old New Yorker carton showing a gnomish character reading a huge tome at a library table exclaiming " Suddenly there, for a moment, it all made sense" There is a similar, and I hope not too illusory, experience after reading Mr. Allday's little book.

Demister for the brain.......2004-02-06

I had read various books and articles on particle physics, but a lot of the terms were just swimming around in my head and I didn't have a very clear idea of what was what. This book presents the different kinds of particles, forces and possible reactions very clearly, and with some very amusing footnotes to boot. Thanks to this explanation I really feel like I understand where all the particles fit in. I will definitely be checking out Allday's other books. Now I just need to find a book with more mathematics in it as a follow-on.

A bright & cheerful light on Particles and Cosmology.......2001-03-22

Dr. Allday's book is a completely charming presentation of particle physics and cosmology. Although not a textbook--there are no exercises--it presumes a physics background, starting, say, at the 3rd year.

Most of the book deals with the Standard Model of particle physics, but GUTS and supersymmetry are briefly mentioned. The last 2 chapters cover cosmology up to 1998. (Unfortunately, the author just missed the opportunity of including the acceleration of the cosmic expansion that was deduced by 2 groups in that year based on supernovae observations. But this is a tiny caveat: since the cosmic acceleration remains yet undigested by theorists, it could have earned only a passing mention had it been included.)

Two related features of the book are worthy of special mention: a) the pedagogy is *first rate* (even the early chapters surveying Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics--those old, overly- familiar staples of Physics--were presented in ways fresh and original), and b)the author's kindly solicitude for his readers shines through on almost every page--something hardly in evidence among science books I've read! The author is simply an excellent teacher and illuminates the subject at every turn.

If, like myself, you've had some bad experiences with "semi-popular" articles on particle physics--whether ,e.g., in Scientific American or Physics Today--that purported to cater to the general Physicist but quickly proved otherwise, then you might give Allday's book a try. And Physics popularizers of every ilk, please take note: if you want to do a better job in future and add to the happiness of your readers,"Quarks, Leptons, and the Big Bang" sets a high water mark suitable for calibrating your best efforts.

Allday's Quarks, Leptons, and the Big Bang.......2000-04-01

This is one of the best SUMMARY books in advanced physics (especially cosmology and elementary particle theory) that I have ever read. It is impossible to read Allday without finding unusually detailed summaries in every chapter, each of which is enough to form the outline of several lectures if not a course. This ability to summarize information in detail for non-specialists is generally a sign of what I call the Creative Genius as opposed to the Ingenious Follower in physics and mathematics, although there are some exceptions. It is more common among European authors (especially British, German, French, Belgian) and Canadian, Australian and American authors from about Chicago or Texas eastward (don't ask me why, or I will go into a long discussion that will last for years). Several publishing companies specialize in it: Springer-Verlag/Springer, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press/Clarendon to a lesser extent. There is a disadvantage to it in that the author sometimes leaves out open research questions of the last few years (as Allday unfortunately does). Kluwer/Plenum and Wiley and Chapman-Hall/Longmans are better in this respect, being oriented toward the latest open questions. The American Mathematical Society publishes in both of the above categories, and the reader should purchase their books whenever they appear. If the reader lacks mathematical or physics specialization, a reputable consultant or tutor should be hired to help translate into ordinary English (a rare ability which is also associated with Creative Genius in my opinion).

This is what Russian-English translators need .......2007-01-15

Isidore Geld's "Dictionary of Omissions for Russian Translators" is a MUST for every RU-EN translator, be he/she either a seasoned professional or a newbee. The dictionary, though having some drawbacks (misspellings, and the cross-references could have been better organized), is still a very valuable tool because it opens the eyes of the translator to one truth: never believe that you know everything, because there is a lot you don't know, so learning must be continuous. In summarizing, its a pity that I didn't have this dictionary on my desk 10 years ago.

Latin American magic realism satire?.......2000-04-10

It's set in Peru and Bolivia and maybe Brazil, and is full of erudite literary references and wonderful descriptions of old Lima. At first I thought it was real magic realism but then I thought it was a satire of the genre. The heroine is a sort of sexy female Candide. I was just rereading it and checked Amazon.com for more Cecile Pineda but find everything out of print. The only other review is of a novel called Frieze set in the ancient Orient.
