Chaikin scores with this book. He successfully captures the underappreciated story of humankind's climb to the Moon.

I have read many books about the Apollo missions and this is the first one I recommend to anyone interested in the subject.

THE BEST.......2007-08-03

If you want to know the history of the Apollo moon landings, this is one of the 2 book you MUST read (Mike Collins "Carrying the fire" being the other) A history of the Apollo program, with flashbacks to Gemini and Mercury for perspective. Chaikin has EVERYTHING that happened here, and he worked to get it. Anyone that had anything to do with the missions, Chaikin talked to him or her. Want to know who flew what, and when, here it is. Why did it happen the way it did? Here ya go.
Even the warts, although, I think Deke was romanticized a bit.

Great mix of science, heroism, duty and personal stories.......2007-05-10

I was twelve when Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon. I was fascinated by science before then, and even now the Apollo program takes my breath away. The book spends time on each Apollo mission from the tragedy of the disastrous fire in Apollo 1 to the swan song of Apollo 17. Each mission has its fascinating story. Chaikin spends a lot of time on the personal recollections of the astronauts, the beauty of the earth from space, the magnificent desolation of the moon, and the effort and engineering genius of thousands of engineers and technicians related to the Apollo program.

The prose is generally good. There are some clunky sentences here and there. The power of the book comes from the author's access to the Apollo astronauts. He interviews the astronauts, technicians and scientists. He tells of their thought processes before, during and after the mission. Chaikin tells of the geologists who trained the astronauts. He tells of the hopes and dreams of a generation of space enthusiasts who watched the lunar missions on TV.

The book was a great read. This book was the inspiration and reference for the miniseries, "From Earth to Moon." If you liked the miniseries, you'll love this book.

An unforgettable experience.......2007-04-09

I liked this book even better than The Right Stuff. It delves into every aspect of the Apollo program, from its inception to its sad cancellation more than a decade later. Chaikin explores the politics, the science and technology, the personalities of the astronauts and others, the exhilaration of the experience of flying in space and landing on the Moon, and does so with a simple, direct, forthright relating of the facts which nevertheless conveys so much raw emotion and spirit. I challenge you to read this book and not be beseiged by dreams of flying to the Moon. The only thing that's missing is some of the behind-the-scenes going-on in Mission Control -- but that's okay. Gene Kranz and Chris Kraft explore those things in their books, and one omission is nothing to hold against Chaikin's definitive work. After reading this book, the only thing left for me to do is to meet the astronauts -- which I'll be doing this summer!!!! -- and maybe go to the Moon myself!

A Star of a Book.......2007-02-04

Almost 600 pages about the men and missions of Apollo that cleverly weaves together extensive interviews and research. Many of the accounts are vivid and Chaikin does a good job of avoiding jargon by focussing more on the people and their experiences rather than technology. If you remember looking up at the moon on July 20,1969 or building a Saturn V model, this book will take you right back. My one criticism is the unabashed pro-NASA/Apollo program view taken throughout the book. Fortunately, this does not detract much from the main story.

Simulated climate for the Antarctic continent using the GENESIS (Version 2.1) Global Climate Model with 34 Ma boundary conditions is shown to be highly sensitive to polar vegetation type. Six experiments were run using different levels of atmospheric CO"2, orbital configurations, ice sheet geometries and vegetation types to assess model sensitivity to Antarctica being covered with either a needle leaf evergreen forest or tundra. Simulations using 2x pre-industrial levels of CO"2 (combined mean annual temperature (MAT) -19 ^oC) are about 7 ^oC cooler than minimum estimates from the Antarctic Cenozoic plant record (MAT -12 to 15 ^oC). However, simulations using 3x CO"2 (MAT -7 ^oC) are in good agreement with our empirical estimates of mean annual temperature. With ice sheets and orbits set up to represent early Oligocene interglacial conditions, the tundra climate is significantly cooler than the evergreen forest climate, with local, austral summer averages up to 6 ^oC cooler in non-glaciated areas and continental averages ~2.5 ^oC cooler. In the model this is mainly due to higher albedo and decreases in net radiation and sensible and latent heat flux, especially during spring and summer. Feedbacks between coastal and continental cooling, marginal sea surface temperatures and sea ice also appear to be significant. A review of the late Palaeocene to earliest Miocene plant fossil record in the Antarctic Peninsula and Ross Sea regions shows that the vegetation was in transition ~34 Ma, from a relatively diverse, mainly evergreen forest to a tundra vegetation. The modelled sensitivity of continental temperatures to a change from forest to tundra suggests vegetation-climate feedbacks during the Eocene-Oligocene transition played a significant role in the initial rapid glaciation of the continent. laciation of the continent.

Continuous Eocene through Oligocene sedimentary sedimentary sections were obtained at Holes 1218A, 1219A, and 1220A drilled during Leg 199 of the Ocean Drilling Program in the central equatorial Pacific. Quantitative analysis of radiolarian assemblages between the upper Eocene through lower Oligocene sedimentary successions revealed that major faunal changes of radiolarians occurred in the late Eocene (35.5-35.7 Ma; Subchron C16n1), around the Eocene/Oligocene boundary (33.7-33.8 Ma; upper Subchron C13r) and in the early Oligocene (30.9-31.3 Ma; uppermost Subchron C12r). The faunal change in the late Eocene is characterized by a stepwise decrease of tropical Eocene species and an increase in cosmopolitan, probably cool-water-tolerant, radiolarians; however, without a significant change in species diversity and radiolarian accumulation rates. The stratigraphic level of this late Eocene turnover came after the late Eocene impact event, and may have been more related to global cooling and associated oceanographic changes than to asteroid impact. The turnover around the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, corresponding to the Oi-1 event, is the most critical during the Eocene-Oligocene transition. Many biotic events such as a sudden drop of species diversity, an increase in the cosmopolitan radiolarian group, a large number of species turnovers, and a drop in radiolarian accumulation rates occurred at or just above this level. Together these indicators suggest a major restructuring of radiolarian assemblages from the high diversity Eocene fauna to a low diversity Oligocene one. The third turnover event within early Oligocene is represented by a replacement of dominant species with a sudden decrease in radiolarian accumulation rates. However, this Oligocene turnover is not consistent with other major @d^1^8O isotope events, such as Oi-1b and Oi-2.

Solid wastes generated from oil and gas industrial activities are very diverse in their characteristics, large in their amounts and many of which are hazardous in nature. Thus, quantifying and characterizing the generated amounts in association with their types, classes, sources, industrial activities, and their chemical and biological characteristics is an obvious mandate when evaluating the possible management practices. This paper discusses the types, amounts, generation units, and the factors related to solid waste generation from a major oil and gas field in the United Arab Emirates (Asab Field). The generated amounts are calculated based on a 1-year data collection survey and using a database software specially developed and customized for the current study. The average annual amount of total solid waste generated in the studied field is estimated at 4061t. Such amount is found equivalent to 650kg/capita, 0.37kg/barrel oil, and 1.6kg/m^3 of extracted gas. The average annual amount of hazardous solid waste is estimated at 55t and most of which (73%) is found to be generated from gas extraction-related activities. The majority of other industrial non-hazardous solid waste is generated from oil production-related activities (41%), The present analysis does also provide the estimated generation amounts per waste type and class, amounts of combustible, recyclable, and compostable wastes, and the amounts dumped in uncontrolled way as well as disposed into special hazardous landfill facilities. The results should help the decision makers in evaluating the best alternatives available to manage the solid wastes generated from the oil and gas industries.
