    Book Description

    Book Description

Organizations competing in today's rapidly changing technological markets are faced with the challenges of "dualism"--operating efficiently in the present while innovating effectively for the future. Managers and leaders within these organizations not only have to focus on current market success and profitability, but they must also introduce the next generation of technical advances, product attributes, or service features that will sustain and even augment their continuing global competitiveness. The Human Side of Managing Technological Innovation, 2/e, provides a variety of approaches and perspectives on issues critical to the effective leadership of technical professionals and cross-functional teams throughout the innovation process. Designed for courses within business, engineering, and executive education programs, the book has been updated throughout and features more than twenty articles new to this edition. In the articles, researchers and practitioners present their thoughts and ideas of the complex interplay between the specialized knowledge and skills of creative professionals and the realistic pressures and constraints required by successful business organizations. The text is organized into seven sections that cover such topics as motivating professionals, measuring productivity, organizing and leading cross-functional development teams, enhancing creativity and decision-making, developing human resource capabilities, building and maintaining innovative climates, managing lead users for new product innovation, and using technology as a strategic resource. It can be used in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses as well as in organizational workshops and seminars that focus primarily on how managers, individual professionals, project teams, and functional groups deal with problems and issues related to the management of technology-based innovation. The book can also be used as a complementary text for any course that emphasizes product, process, organizational, or technological innovation. The Human Side of Managing Technological Innovation, 2/e, provides a unique collection of articles that increase the sensitivity and understanding of individuals who are managing or influencing innovation and change processes within organizations. It also offers practicing managers and staff professionals new ideas, tools, and insights for problem-solving, organizing, and functioning more effectively.

4 out of 5 stars A fantastic class book to keep on your bookshelf.......2002-10-05

Ralph is a Genious as a professor. I had him a few years ago at MIT Sloan in a course on Managing the Human Side of Technology. We used articles from the book as case studies in our class.
Still today I take his book to read on cases which help me to understand my daily struggles in managing engineers and understanding better the soft factors in organisations.

Since this book is a collection of papers, it is great if you have already have some knowledge about the topics but maybe it is a bit to 'heavy' for beginners.

4 out of 5 stars The only book of its kind out there, but it needs editing.......2000-08-02

I had to read this book for a class in Business School, and though I found most of the articles interesting, about 25% were either a) a little dated or b)heavy on the "Well, Duh" factor. The book is organized into 6 sections. dealing with the management of professionals, project teams, technical professionals, professionals in innovative organizations, processes and technological innovation.

There really is no other book out there that is as good a compilation of writings concerning this important topic, but the book could be improved by tossing some of the articles which, while innovative at the time, have been accepted by the business world already.

        Book Description

In today's world of globalization, the United States generally is considered by foreign investors around the world to be the safest and most profitable location to invest their funds and from where to operate a headquarters or manufacturing site. After more than a decade of prosperity and a strong currency coupled with the traditional political stability, the United States has emerged as a net importer of capital for the first time in post World War II history. Increasing profit margins for multinationals, relatively low interest rates, incredible stock exchange prices and volume, a reduced level of inflation and record consumer spending resulting from sophisticated demands of the baby boomer age, as well as an accelerated rate of immigrant arrivals, all have inspired new private investment from abroad, now surpassing the USD 5 trillion mark in direct and indirect investment. Surveys consistently show that foreign businesspersons, like their American counterparts, seek locations from which to manufacture, assemble, or service their products where the tax or investment incentives are most attractive. This fact is reflected in the operations of the Fortune 500 in the United States where 80% of privately invested assets are located in the five states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Illinois, and California, all of which are leaders in providing trade and investment concessions to businesses.

Investment incentives consist of a variety of inducements ranging from tax credits and cash grants and tax exemptions or reductions to accelerated depreciation, loan subsidies and property tax, sales tax and customs duty exclusions or reductions, as well as foreign trade and enterprise zone availability. Unlike the array of incentives offered by foreign countries, the charts reflect that most of the States rely on property tax concessions, loan subsidy financing, development project rewards, low or no sales taxes and foreign trade zone availability. As in the case of Part I relating to State Investment Incentives, Part II of the US State-by-State Guide to Investment Incentives and Capital Formation covering the steps required to organize an entity in the United States, reflects great similarity in incorporation in contrast to enterprises wishing to operate abroad. Walter and Dorothy Diamond's Guide presents the reader with a clear picture of all the differing rules and regulations between the states that govern investors. It is clear, concise, user-friendly, and invaluable.

        Book Description

"This book is destined to become a standard reference work on Maya archaeoastronomy.... [It provides] a basic, sound, and utterly comprehensive introduction to the subject of ancient Maya astronomy."

—Andrea Stone, Professor of Art History, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee

Observations of the sun, moon, planets, and stars played a central role in ancient Maya lifeways, as they do today among contemporary Maya who maintain the traditional ways. This pathfinding book reconstructs ancient Maya astronomy and cosmology through the astronomical information encoded in Precolumbian Maya art and confirmed by the current practices of living Maya peoples.

Susan Milbrath opens the book with a discussion of modern Maya beliefs about astronomy, along with essential information on naked-eye observation. She devotes subsequent chapters to Precolumbian astronomical imagery, which she traces back through time, starting from the Colonial and Postclassic eras. She delves into many aspects of the Maya astronomical images, including the major astronomical gods and their associated glyphs, astronomical almanacs in the Maya codices [painted books], and changes in the imagery of the heavens over time. This investigation yields new data and a new synthesis of information about the specific astronomical events and cycles recorded in Maya art and architecture. Indeed, it constitutes the first major study of the relationship between art and astronomy in ancient Maya culture.

This book is full of the most embarassing mistakes. While the drawings are wonderful the discussion of astronomy is a real problem. I'd suggest Anthony Aveni's work (many many books) as a correction to this work.

        5 out of 5 stars Art historian's master work.......2000-07-12

In her brilliant, beautifully researched book, Susan Milbrath uses her extensive knowledge of Mayan art to recreate the structure of the Maya's astronomy and cosmology and, even more importantly, to celebrate their mysterious beauty. Star Gods is a splendid book written by an amazing art historian at the peak of her powers.

Star Gods of the Maya is one of the best works on Precolumbian religion to be produced in recent years. It presents material about the astronomical interests of the ancient Maya in a manner which is accessible to the amateur but sufficiently well-documented to satisfy the specialist. Well organized and user friendly, it will probably become the desk reference of choice on this subject.

              Book Description

In The Adapted Mind, Jerome Barkow, along with Leda Cosmides and John Tooby, set out to redefine evolutionary psychology for the social sciences and to create a new agenda for the next generation of social scientists. While biologically oriented psychologists quickly accepted the work, social scientists in psychology and researchers in anthropology and sociology, who deal with the same questions of human behavior, were more resistant. Missing the Revolution is an invitation to researchers from these disciplines who, in Barkow's view, have been missing the great evolution-revolution of our time to engage with Darwinian thought, which is now so large a part of the non-sociological study of human nature and society. Barkow asks the reader to put aside the preconceptions and stereotypes social scientists often have of the "biological" and to take into account a powerful paradigm that is far away from those past generations who would invoke a vocabulary of "genes" and "Darwin" as justification for genocide. The evolutionary perspective, Barkow maintains, provides no particular support for the status quo, no rationalizations for racism or any other form of social inequality. "Cultural" cannot possibly be opposed to "biological" because culture and society are the only means we have of expressing our evolved psychology; social-cultural constructionism is not only compatible with an evolutionary approach but demanded by it. To marshal evidence for his argument, Barkow has gathered together eminent scholars from a variety of disciplines to present applications of evolutionary psychology in a manner intended to illustrate their relevance to current concerns for social scientists. The contributors include, among others, evolutionary psychologist Anne Campbell, a Darwinian feminist who reaches out to feminist social cosntructionists; sociologist Ulica Segarstrale, who analyzes the opposition of the "cultural left" to Darwinism; sociologist Bernd Baldus, who criticizes evolutionists for ignoring agency; criminologist Anthony Walsh, who presents a biosocial criminology; and primatologists Lars Rodseth and Shannon A. Novak, who reveal an unexpected uniqueness to human social organization. Missing the Revolution is a challenge to scholars to think critically about a powerful social and intellectual movement which insists that the theoretical perspective that has been so successful when applied to the behavior of other animal species can be applied to our own.

                    Book Description

This new paperback edition celebrates the centennial of the birth of one of the major theoretical physicists of our time. It is an engrossing account of an exciting period in history and science as well as a good introduction to nuclear physics for the nonscientist.

Moving from Bohr's first great contribution - a description of what is essentially the modern picture of the atom, in 1913, for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1922 - the book covers his creation of one of the most productive research institutes of the modern period. It also describes his less well known political work before and during World War II, when Bohr first helped colleagues escape from Italy and Germany, and then returned to Denmark to participate in the anti-Nazi movement; and at war's end, when he worked toward a vision of a world free from the dangers of nuclear war.

Ruth Moore is a science feature writer for the Chicago Sunday Times. She is the author of several popular science books, including Man, Time, and Fossils: The Story of Evolution and Charles Darwin: A Great Life in Brief.

4 out of 5 stars Biography of Niels Bohr.......2001-07-10

This biography recalls the entire life of Niels Bohr, one of the preeminent scientists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the author even likens his influence to Aristotle's. Though focusing primarily on his scientific life, the book traces his life from his promising beginnings in Denmark until his death in 1962. Also included is the author's assertion that Bohr was nearly able to halt the nuclear Arms race that spawned the Cold War. Other notables that are mentioned in conjunction with Bohr include: James Franck, Lord Rutherford, Werner Heisenberg, Enrico Fermi, Sir John Cockcroft, Ernest Lawrence, and Adlai Stevenson.

After years of trying different approaches to help with back pain I bought this after being intrigued with the title. I looked up the type of pain I was having, located it in the book, followed the clear directions, and it worked! My husband picked it up, used the same approach, and he's amazed with the results. He's a gym rat that exercises and stretches daily and couldn't get rid of his nagging lower back pain - but now with the stretches and exercises described in the book, they are under control. We've had to keep up with the exercises but my husband and I have been pleasantly surprised with the results.

I got immediate relief for a nagging knee problem when I followed the suggested exercises in Peggy's book. I've continued to use the exercises on a regular basis and my knee is almost back to normal. The instructions are written in easy to follow language. This book could easily be a 5 Star "Plus" if the illustrations were just a bit more detailed. I've recommended this book to many of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Pain Relief -Quick.......2007-02-15

In the last year I had Physical Therapy for my knees & arm/neck/shoulder. I looked for books to continue doing exercise at home. Some books make you determine what is wrong with your body, but if you're wrong you can actually choose improper exercises and hurt yourself. This book has short, quick exercises that are similar to what I was taught at therapy, and I feel safe in doing them. If you want a program to feel better in general, her other book -Core Program, really has routines that are similar to what my therapist was teaching me. No muscle/ligamnet, etc. is an isolated thing. You need to develop the surrounding areas to really function well without pain.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book to have on hand........2006-11-06

I like this book because it has exercises used in physical therapy to relieve various aches and pains all over the body. It's easy to find what you're looking for and the exercises I've tried work. The illustrations are helpful. Having this book is a lot cheaper than visiting a physical therapist to get the same exercises, plus the whole family can use it.
