The days of lifetime jobs and employee loyalty are over. Instead, competition and other market forces lead companies to lay off people, and employees to leave for the highest bidder, writes Peter Cappelli in The New Deal at Work. These changes in the workplace are making a salient impact on companies, employees, and the nation. For instance, companies are less likely to provide employee training and development, for fear employees will be poached by other firms. At the same time, companies are more apt to hire outside consultants than full-time employees, in order to stay competitive in a rapidly changing environment. This affects everything from national educational policy to employee morale to corporate management and payment principles, warns Cappelli, who is a Wharton School professor of management and codirector of the U.S. Department of Education's National Center on the Educational Quality of the Workforce. The book, well researched and filled with footnotes, provides historical perspective and insight for company leaders looking to manage the current economic reality. It's aimed primarily at managers, but anyone concerned about the nation's economic policies will gain some valuable insight. --Dan Ring

    Book Description

In this thought-provoking book, the author argues that the relationship between employees and employers--an association that both defines and drives the American workplace--is in a state of profound transition. Organizations that once provided long-term job security and lifetime career development are abandoning these programs in favor of market-based employment transactions: short-term contracts, temporary staffing, and outsourcing. Peter Cappelli explores recent developments in employment relationships and causes us to rethink our long-held assumptions about managing people. He reveals that the new arrangement shifts many of the risks of business from employer to employee, as individuals must now assume responsibility for developing their own skills and careers. Yet when internal development programs are reduced or nonexistent, how can employers retain the employees they need and secure the commitment and specialized skills that so many projects demand? Cappelli's conclusions make for important and compelling reading for employees, managers, policy makers, and anyone concerned with the market forces that shape the American workplace.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Analysis of Complex Trends.......2001-08-23

Cappelli's main idea -- that HRM is changing because the external marketplace is being brought into the firm -- really gets to the essence of changes in the employment relationship. Once you've read the first two chapters, you'll never think about HRM the same way again. However, I wish Cappelli had explored the complexity of labor markets and practices more deeply -- we really have a multi-model HRM now, rather than the "new deal" he outlines, and probably always will because of differences in product and labor markets and industries.

    5 out of 5 stars Insightful Reading.......2001-07-28

The New Deal explores the breaking of the structural ties that modern employees have with employer. It strives to explain the employee's basis for his association with his managers. A good read..no doubt.

5 out of 5 stars A Wakeup Call for Middle Managers !.......2001-01-14

Cappelli provides an understanding of the changes in the social and psychological contracts between employees and their employers in todays world. I feel as if blinders have been removed from my eyes and that I now have the tools to understand the changing work environment and labor market of the new economy.

A must read for those in large companies that have existed longer than 40 years (or are over 40 years old themselves).

For for those who believe they have security and entitlement based upon their "knowledge of the company"... Here's a News Flash " Organizational man is dead ..."

Thanks Professor for the heads up !

5 out of 5 stars Demystify the Maze.......2007-07-23

This book rocks! It is well written, clearly organized, full of incredibly useful insights and obviates the need for any other books. Purchasing property in the Golden State is hugely complicated and this book unravels the knots and truly educates the potential buyer to the point that ones agent will be impressed. Every aspect is covered and in such depth that I truly believe it helped me negotiate the best price and the best mortgage terms. I fully understood all the steps and when it came to final closing costs, I was impressed that I was able to accurately predict exactly what those would be ...no shocks here. I highly recommend this book.

I will be a first time homebuyer shortly and this book is really helping me put things into perspective and feel confident about purchasing a home. Easy to read. Easy to understand. Easy to find specific information. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Prepared for the LA Market-Whoa!.......2006-02-02

This book is the only book you will need if buying a home in California. I am in my early thirties and knew nothing about the housing market in California until reading this easy and thorough guide to California home buying.
It provides a detailed and easy to understand guide to preparing oneself for entering theCalifornia housing market. The book is broken down in comprehensible, step by step chapters covering a wide range of subject areas. There are plenty of worksheets designed to help in your home search (practical and financial) as well as plenty of real life examples that illustrate common inquiries, pitfalls and scenarios.
I live in Los Angeles and was very intimidated by the insanely competitive housing market. This book has gotten me over these worries and am now working confidently with an amazing broker in looking for the house that's right for me. Don't bother with other guides, this is honestly the only one you will need!

5 out of 5 stars Informative and easy to understand.......2004-01-28

This book explains all the little nuances about buying a house. I read the whole thing and parts of it more than once before I bought my first house. It is well organized so that you can read just certain chapters if you need specific information right away. I actually sold my copy online after my house closed. Later, I ended up buying a copy as a gift for a friend. I recommend this book to all my friends who are thinking about buying a house.

5 out of 5 stars As usual, the only book you'll need........2002-01-19

I used the Nolo Press tenants' rights book in the past to (successfully) sue my deposit-greedy/law-breaking landlords. I just used this book to buy my first home in the competitive Bay Area (yes, it's still highly competitive even in these "tough times"). Nolo's book is accurate and insightful, written in a voice that's accessible and, at times, fun and tongue-in-cheek. The organization of information, as usual, is right on. And the links and helpful sidebars are fantastic! Don't waste your money on other books. I swear this one is the only book you'll need.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent translation, with one big flaw.......2005-08-07

This book serves very well as a translation and commentary for the Catasterismi of Pseudo-Eratosthenes and the Poeticon Astronomicon of Hyginus. I would recommend this book to the scholar and archeoastronomer.

However, reading from the text, it is clear that this book is primarily a labor of translation rather than Astronomy. In order to identify stars, Condos compared the texts of Pseudo-Eratosthenes and Hyginus to that of Ptolemy's Almagest. If she could not positively comfirm the identity of a star by cross-referencing it through Ptolemy, she simply left it unidentified in her translation (designating it with a ?). A clear example of the problem with this came when she tried to identify the three stars in Orion's head as lambda, ?, and ?. In this case, if she had a simple star atlas in front of her (like Norton's), she would have been able to easily identify the two unknown stars as phi-1 and phi-2. The sky hasn't changed that much since the time of the Greeks and an atlas might have been helpful to Condos in her work

So, yes, this is a recommendable book, but keep in mind that Condos' translation was made through referencing ancient texts alone without a proper study of the actual sky and stars upon which the texts were based. This flaw isn't fatal, but it is significant enough for me to dock one star and recommend that the reader have an atlas of his or her own to reference when using this book.

4 out of 5 stars More scholarly than entertaining........2004-02-11

Star Myths is an excellent sourcebook - for a serious student. If you're looking for entertaining and engaging writing, look elsewhere. If you want a learned (if brief) overview of how the Greek and Roman constellations were named, by whom, and what stars are contained therein, then you've got the right volume!

Theony Condos, the translator, draws mostly on two prime sources; Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy), attributed to Hyginus; and Catasterismi (The Constellations), by Eratothenes. In the introduction, Condos discusses the backgrounds of Hyginus and Eratothenes, their influences and sources, and some supporting and relating works by their contemporaries and historical peers. Moving on from the (mercifully!) brief introduction, Condos procedes directly to the heart of the matter, and launches into an alphebetized listing of the major 'western' constellations, each with a idealized line-drawing of the constellation and its namesake image, a brief discussion of the associated legend(s) as discussed in the primary works, and a translators commentary. Primary stars, where possible, are indicated by their symbols (rather than spelling out their names) in the text. This last I found most frustrating, for while a serious scholar of Latin and Greek would recognize these symbols immediately, I found myself struggling to interpret them.

This book comes with fairly extensive end notes and appendicies, useful to the student looking for more insight. While I find this volume to be useful in a limited way, it's really aimed towards the more serious student, and not to the casual sky-watcher. If you want an education on the origins of the Western European constellations, this is a good place to start, though it's not the ultimate word on the subject. However, if you want to identify that intriguing cluster of bright lights in the nighttime sky, you'll probably want to go elsewhere.

      4 out of 5 stars recommendable book.......2000-05-01

This is a very interesting and readable book. I hope to read HYGINUS' "The MYTHS of Hyginus" once translated by M. Grant in 1960. I think the latter is more interesting to read for the fans of Greco-Roman mythology.

      Book Description

In this volume (volume 1), the fundamental aspects of thermodynamics are presented. The first and second laws of thermodynamics are illustrated. The need to define thermodynamic temperature and the nature of entropy are explained. The book explores the meaning of auxiliary thermodynamic functions, the origin, usefulness and use of partial molar quantities. Gaseous systems and phase equilibria, in systems where chemical reactions do not take place, are described.

In volume 2, the tools necessary to study and understand systems in which chemical reactions can take place are developed. The variables of reaction are the keys to this understanding. Criteria for chemical equilibrium are established. It is shown how chemical reactions can provide work as, for example, in batteries. For complex systems, the number of independent reactions and their nature have to be determined systematically. The effect of external factors on chemical equilibria is analyzed and illustrated. The formalism necessary to study ideal and real solutions is provided. The various standard states in use and the corresponding activity coefficients are clearly defined. The statistical aspect of thermodynamics is best understood once students are familiar with the rest of the book and, for this reason, is treated in the last chapter.

Both volumes comply with the latest IUPAC recommendations for symbols. Most of the specific mathematical tools are presented either directly in the text if they are used mostly in one chapter, while others are included in an appendix. A primarily phenomenological approach has been selected to keep chemical thermodynamics easily accessible to beginners. Intermediate steps in the derivations have been kept to enhance the clarity of the presentation. A large number of problems, most of them original, all with complete solutions, are provided. They give this textbook a great pedagogical value. This book is primarily destined to students, graduate students and practicing scientists in the fields of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biochemical and Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. "[This] text offers many new and clever derivations of the well-worn equations of chemical thermodynamics... [It] is easy to read... [It] should be on the bookshelf of every serious teacher of thermodynamics."

This is a easily readable book, for people who wan't to learn about thermodynamics. The steps to understand fully the basic notions are realy simple to follow and the mathematical equasions follow well without jumping big steps, as other books usualy do... as if the other authors didn't quite get the formulas themselves.

Mr Infelta & Grätzel realy put excellent effort in realizing these books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent physical thermodynamics book.......2000-03-27

This book explains the fundamentals of thermodynamics in a very clear way. Starting from the first and second Laws, it guides you through the problems of pure substances and mixtures, the thermodynamics of perfect and real gases and finally the equilibrium between phases. Every equation is derived precisely but also explained by texts or figures to help the reader understand the idea hidden between the math. Every chapter is followed by numerous problems that allow to understand how the concepts derived theoretically can be applied to real chemical systems.

With the second volume, those two books are an excellent learning material for any chemistry student, but also Ph.D., who wants to understand anything in chemical thermodynamics.

      Book Description

The chemostat is a basic piece of laboratory apparatus, yet it has begun to occupy an increasingly central role in ecological studies. The ecological environment created by a chemostat is one of the few completely controlled experimental systems for testing microbial growth and competition. As a tool in biotechnology, the chemostat plays an important role in bioprocessing. This book presents the theory of the chemostat as a model for larger ecological problems such as food chains, competition along a gradient, competition in the presence of an inhibitor, and the effects of time varying inputs. Mathematical models that take account of size structure, variable yields, and diffusion are also considered. The basic phenomena are modeled and analyzed using the dynamical systems approach. New directions for research and open problems are discussed. Six appendices provide an elementary description of the necessary mathematical tools.

        Book Description

In the continuing push toward optical computing, the focus remains on finding and developing the right materials. Characterizing materials, understanding the behavior of light in these materials, and being able to control the light are key players in the search for suitable optical materials. Optics in Magnetic Multilayers and Nanostructures presents an accessible introduction to optics in anisotropic magnetic media. While most of the literature presents only final results of the complicated formulae for the optics in anisotropic media, this book provides detailed explanations and full step-by-step derivations that offer insight into the procedure and reveal any approximations. Based on more than three decades of experimental research on the subject, the author explains the basic concepts of magnetooptics; nonreciprocal wave propagation; the simultaneous effect of crystalline symmetry and arbitrarily oriented magnetization on the form of permittivity tensors; spectral dependence of permittivity; multilayers at polar, longitudinal, transverse, and arbitrary magnetization; the effect of normal or near-normal incidence on multilayers; and anisotropic multilayer gratings. Making the subject of magnetooptics and anisotropic media approachable by the nonspecialist, Optics in Magnetic Multilayers and Nanostructures serves as an ideal introduction to newcomers and an indispensable reference for seasoned researchers.

The truth is stranger than fiction in this whimsical account of daily life at a popular New York City Upper West Side hotel. Normand Lopez uses a no-holds-barred approach, describing the various characters and situations that crossed his path day in and day out. Management, ownership, employees, residents and guests are all targeted for praise and/or criticism, as they go about their duties inside this hospitality property that can only be described as a twenty-five-floor, three-hundred-room insane asylum.
