The contents of this book center around the management of strategic reward systems. In particular, the book focuses in on the following elements of managing a reward system: design, implementation, and evaluation. It is my belief that too much time is spent on the administration of strategic reward systems at the expense of these other activities that add more value than does administration to the organization.

Moreover, it is very important to remember that the management of reward systems takes place in a larger context that must be accommodated when designing, implementing, and evaluating strategic reward systems. This larger context includes the business environment, business strategy, and compensation strategy. Elements of the environment include the internal environment (organizational structure, business processes, HR systems) and external environment (laws and regulations, labor markets, and unions).

The collection of articles presented throughout the book is very concerned with the fit of strategic reward management with the business environment, business strategy, and compensation strategy. Research has clearly documented the importance of this "fit" to organizational effectiveness (Gomez-Mejia & Balkin, 1992). A practical illustration makes the point as well. Taco Bell was found guilty in a class action suit by current and former employees. In order to keep the number of labor hours low in a productivity formula used to grant bonuses to managers, employee time sheets failed to account for overtime hours by employees. Failure to pay attention to the legal context in designing, implementing, and evaluating a strategic reward program cost Taco Bell millions of dollars (Gatewood, 2001).

Although all of the readings in the book focus in on the management of strategic rewards in the larger business context, the readings are organized by topical area. The selection of topics is simply based on my writing interests and do not reflect the entire domain of important topics in strategic reward management.

I used this as a beginner, and although I found the explanations at times confusing, working through the practice problems and making my own sights made it clear what to do. A great resource to have, though not one to learn basic theory from. But then again, this is not the purpose of this publication, either.

Everything you need in a compact, easy-to-use handbook.......2007-07-20

This excellent "manual" contains everything needed to perform celestial navigation at sea, or to practice the skills at home. The manual contains an instructional section at the beginning describing the process, followed by complete tables and nautical almanac for 2003-2007, providing everything needed to plot one's position with nothing more than a pencil, paper, and of course the sextant.

I took this book on my single-handed cruise to the Bahamas in 2006, as a back-up to my GPS, and also for practice and the fun and challenge of navigating by the stars. While my GPS never failed me in open water sailing, I still plotted my position by sun and stars several times on the trip, and was very greatful to have everything I needed in one compact book, given how extremely precious space on a small sailboat can be.

One consideration is that the instructions at the beginning will not give nearly as in-depth a lesson into the theory and complexities of celestial navigation as other purely instructional books will give. The book will, however, provide complete instruction for a rusty mind that hasn't performed a sight reduction in a long time, or someone who otherwise has some grasp on the concept. I personally learned celestial navigation simply from a few online instructional sites that give general overviews along with the instructions in this book. I rate the book at 5 stars because I think the "instructional" section is the perfect length for a book of this purpose.

The Complete On-Board Celestial Navigator is an excellent "everything but the sextant" handbook to use for recreational or back-up celestial navigation in today's world.

Good Resource for Intermediate to Advanced Navigator.......2006-08-26

Excellent resource if you wish to manually navigate or if you find yourself in a situation which precludes using GPS.

Complete and compact and very terse.......2006-08-10

I bought this because it combines the functions of nautical almanac and sight reduction tables in one slender volume. It provides five years of star data, sample worksheets and lots of worked out examples. So it's a lot easier than hauling around Nautical Almanacs and 3-volume sight reduction tables.

The tables trade compactness for accuracy. Sights and positions are taken to the nearest minute of latitude or longitude, rather than 10ths of minutes in the standard celestial navigation tables. I don't mind the loss of accuracy; my sights are pretty loose to begin with, and it's hard to imagine an emergency short of nuclear war where I'd actually have to depend on celestial navigation. I'm learning it only because I want to do a Transpac race and the rules require that four lines of position be determined during the race.

Also, to keep the tables small, the sight reduction methodology is non-standard and requires a few extra steps compared to the normal "Bowditch-approved" method. The geometry behind them is completely opaque, so you have to take them on faith unless you are a true expert in celestial navigation techniques. But, once you get the hang of it, it's a straightforward sequence of arithmetic sums.

The author includes a couple of methods for determining azimuth, one by table lookup and one by the use of "Weir diagrams." The latter look interesting but the explanation in the book is completely incomprehensible and I couldn't find another reference that even mentioned them.

"There are no transitional fossils" .......2005-04-01

Without a doubt, the author gives the strongest evidence I've read that the typical creationist barb "there are no transitional fossils" is rubbish. Usually right after they say this, they quote some mainstream scientist to prove their point. However, that's clearly not the case, as McGowan shows.

Covering reptile-mammal, dinosaur-bird, fish-amphibian, amphibian-reptile, unicellular-multicellular, invertebrate-choradate, ape-human, horse, and other transition fossils, the author leaves no group behind and provides demonstrable proof that there is a visible transition in things both living and fossilized.

I subtract a star since the author does not argue against many other creationist claims (which are covered adequately elsewhere, but it wouldn't hurt to have a few more mentioned) and because the author's work is mainly a response to Morris' and Gish's books published in the 70s.

Presents scientific case for evolution & debunks creationism.......1997-09-01

Chris McGowan does an outstanding job of presenting the evidence for the occurrence of evolution. Where applicable, he demonstrates the inadequacy of creationism to account for evidence and how creationists must ultimately invoke divine causes to complete their model of origins

Denton covers most of the major creationist claims, and shows why creationism is bunk. Those who detest creationists for trying to force their pseudoscience into schools will find this book invaluable, and those who are unfamiliar with the subject will find this a good introduction

If You've Ever Thought of Revenge..........2007-07-09

The series is of a Sisterhood, created by a very wealthy Mrya, whose daughter was killed by the son of diplomat in a hit and run incident. The son could not be prosecuted due to his diplomatic status. The other members of the group also have been through experiences where the justice system let them down. Add in an ex spy and it is a fun tale of revenge. Each book takes on the case of one of the sisters in the sisterhood.

Actually, this is the second time I have read this book. I read it two years ago, not knowing that it was the beginning of a series. I recently came upon the next few books in the series and didn't remember enough of this book, so I read it again. It was just as fun the second time around. It is outrageous in parts and could never happen, but the idea of it is amusing. It is a fast, escapist read.

Opening Salvo!.......2007-05-17

Mystery fans alert. I came to this book late in the series: fiction impells the reader, for a few hours, to suspend belief. Fern Michaels' Sisterhood Series does just that for anyone who has had to endure an injustice. The unfairness of any situation, major or minor, where the victim cannot strike back endures for a lifetime, for both sexes.
Ms. Michaels' beginner "Weekend Warriors" pulls the reader back to discover the connections and events leading to later books. A delightful read, anytime. Nash Black, "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks and Pitfalls 2007" and "Qualifying Laps."

Excellent book full of humor...perfect for any beginner.......2007-07-30

This book was great. It helped straighten out a few things I was not sure about with equipment in hockey and how it should fit. Wish I had bought it before I started my first season instead of half way through. His humor is great and most of what he jokes about if you've played hockey you can relate too. Several times I found myself laughing out loud. This isn't going to tell you what drills to work on to be a good player, or even how to shoot a puck better than you do already. What this will do is explain the equipment, what its used for, how to wear it, and when to buy it. He goes through every piece of the sport that a new person should get to know before going out and playing. Explaining the positions, the rules, getting in with the refs, rec league stuff, and even what beer to bring for after the game with your new team. This book is a must read for any new hockey player and would be a great read for those who have played hockey just to get some good laughs. Its not a long book so it should take much to knock it out even if your not much of a reader (like me).

For the Rookie, and the Skate Buyer.......2005-11-12

A fun read. For the rookie, a great book to provide some street (or rink) smarts. For more experienced players it includes great information on buying new equipment. The chapter on skate buying is probably the best, and will save people (or at the very least be worth) the $10 they pay for the book in getting the right skates. Doesn't include much in the way of even basic strategy, which could maybe be volume 2.

Witty and great insight.......2005-09-14

I loved reading Noble's book. I have played hockey for over two decades and still learned what he had to offer. While the book is geared towards those interested in beginning to play hockey, I highly enjoyed the witty humor and insight into the game.

This was a very professionally written account of the lives of 15 very diverse people who also happen to be professional lacrosse players. The book really makes you view these athletes as interested in their sport, valued members of their community, and very different from the multi-million dollar primma donnas who play other professional sports. This book is filled with stories of professional lacrosse players. The players are atypical from other professional sports players, who are often filled with self-admiration and greed. Yet, they are not exactly everyday people either. The players do have full time jobs and families, but many of them are in noble fields such as teaching, law enforcement, the armed forces, fire fighting... Of course, it takes a noble character to be devoted to such an underpaid and under-appreciated sport. The players sacrifice their bodies, time, and some family commitments for the love of their sport. The writing is clever, and the author gives good insight about the players' individuality, achievements, reminiscences, and dedication.

After the Duke Lacrosse scandal, it was refreshing to see an upbeat well-written book about lacrosse. These players truly honor their sport, and make the casual observer want to learn more. The stories were interesting, and it was a good overview of the NLL, and the players who make the league work. I really enjoyed it, and hope to see more books like it.

This book was interesting, insightful, and sometimes even funny when explaining the lives of 15 "ordinary" people who have jobs, wives, kids, and play professional lacrosse on the weekends. It makes you realize how different pro lacrosse is from other pro sports. (And I mean that in a good way.) The writing was clear and engaging, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

It was great to finally read a good book on professional lacrosse. The writing was interesting and insightful, and provided a good mix of lacrosse history combined with people who play the game. I would definitely recommend this book for the lacrosse fanatic, or even the casual observer. I enjoyed it!
