From Cells to Societies
Alexander S. Mikhailov , and Vera Calenbuhr Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 3540421645 |
Book Description
This book shows how, by rather simple models, we can gain remarkable insights into the behavior of complex systems. It is devoted to the discussion of functional self-organization in large populations of interacting active elements. The possible forms of self-organization in such systems range from coherent collective motions in the physical coordinate space to the mutual synchronization of internal dynamics, the development of coherently operating groups, the rise of hierarchical structures, and the emergence of dynamical networks. Such processes play an important role in biological and social phenomena. The authors have chosen a series of models from physics, biochemistry, biology, sociology and economics, and will systematically discuss their general properties. The book addresses researchers and graduate students in a variety of disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, biology and the social sciences.Customer Reviews:
Cells and societies.......2003-08-05
This is a work to be read carefully, Mikhailov and Calenbuhr write very precisely (e.g. maxwell's demon takes 5 pages where other authors would have needed a full chapter for a more discursive treatment)but certainly none the worse for that.

Book Description
This book explores the attitudes, myths, and masks of that absurd animal, the socialized human being. These are impaled and dissected by C. E. Pickhardt in a collection of 50 highly artful verse and caricature satires on themes running from advice to vulgarity. The drawings are caustic, funny, economical and wincingly accurate. - The New York Times, March 6, 1965.

Oxygen Transport in Biological Systems: Modelling of Pathways from Environment to Cell (Society for Experimental Biology Seminar Series)
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521414881 |
Book Description
The study of oxygen transfer in animals and plants represents a large and diverse field of research, covering not only different levels of organisation ranging from the whole organism through to subcellular organelles, and different mechanisms such as convection and simple or facilitated diffusion, but also, of necessity, invoking diverse methodological approaches. This book offers a range of perspectives on the modelling of oxygen transport, covering the broadest possible spectrum of disciplines within the field and emphasising the different methodological approaches used, so encouraging the communication of ideas from individual, often very specialised fields, to a wider audience. The volume presents an authoritative and stimulating review of theoretical and methodological developments in this exciting field of study and concludes with a critical evaluation of the most recent data, providing a unique synthesis from which the research can move forward.

Scaling-up: From Cell to Landscape (Society for Experimental Biology Seminar Series)
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521471095 |
Book Description
The difficulty that humans have in perceiving and understanding large scale phenomena is widely acknowledged. The need to study and understand processes associated with global environmental change has created an environment that has promoted unprecedented scientific co-operation between and within disciplines. The science of global change emphasises the need to understand the complex biophysical systems both in terms of components and as a whole. This has involved research at many levels of organisation, or scales, within each system. The need to link and integrate information between scales underlies the scientific approaches described in this book. The theory, practice and challenges of scaling are discussed using examples from current research, combining biology and geography to address issues at a range of scales, from local to global levels.

Tarsiers: Past, Present, and Future (Rutgers Series in Human Evolution)
Manufacturer: Rutgers University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0813532361 |
Book Description
Tarsiiformes, or tarsiers for short, are a group of living species whose combination of derived and ancient characteristics make them pivotal to understanding the roots of primate evolution. These small-bodied, nocturnal, solitary creatures resemble lower primates in their behavior and morphology, while some genetic evidence aligns them more closely with higher primates, such as monkeys, apes, and humans. This unique combination of behavior and anatomy makes the tarsier an especially interesting and controversial animal for study among primate behaviorists, evolutionists, and taxonomists, who view the tarsiers as "living fossils" that link past and present, lower and higher primates in the long chain of evolutionary history.Contributors to this volume draw on a range of scientific disciplines to provide a detailed examination of the past, present, and future of these intriguing primates.

The Mermaid Chair: A Novel

Sue Monk Kidd's The Mermaid Chair is the soulful tale of Jessie Sullivan, a middle-aged woman whose stifled dreams and desires take shape during an extended stay on Egret Island, where she is caring for her troubled mother, Nelle. Like Kidd's stunning debut novel, The Secret Life of Bees, her highly anticipated follow up evokes the same magical sense of whimsy and poignancy. While Kidd places an obvious importance on the role of mysticism and legend in this tale, including the mysterious mermaid's chair at the center of the island's history, the relationships between characters is what gives this novel its true weight. Once she returns to her childhood home, Jessie is forced to confront not only her relationship with her estranged mother, but her other emotional ties as well. After decades of marriage to Hugh, her practical yet conventional husband, Jessie starts to question whether she is craving an independence she never had the chance to experience. After she meets Brother Thomas, a handsome monk who has yet to take his final vows, Jessie is forced to decide whether passion can coexist with comfort, or if the two are mutually exclusive. As her soul begins to reawaken, Jessie must also confront the circumstances of her father's death, a tragedy that continues to haunt Jessie and Nelle over thirty years later.
By boldly tackling such major themes as love, betrayal, grief, and forgiveness, The Mermaid Chair forces readers to question whether moral issues can always be interpreted in black or white. It is this ability to so gracefully present multiple sides of a story that reinforces Kidd's reputation as a well-respected modern literary voice. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
Sue Monk Kidd's stunning debut, The Secret Life of Bees, has transformed her into a genuine literary star. Now, in her much-anticipated new novel, Kidd has woven a transcendent tale that will thrill her legion of fans and cement her reputation as one of the most remarkable writers at work today.Inside the abbey of a Benedictine monastery on tiny Egret Island, just off the coast of South Carolina, resides a beautiful and mysterious chair ornately carved with mermaids and dedicated to a saint who, legend claims, was a mermaid before her conversion.
Jessie Sullivan's conventional life has been molded to the smallest space possible. So when she is called home to cope with her mother's startling and enigmatic act of violence, Jessie finds herself relieved to be apart from her husband, Hugh. Jessie loves Hugh, but on Egret Island amid the gorgeous marshlands and tidal creeksshe becomes drawn to Brother Thomas, a monk who is mere months from taking his final vows. What transpires will unlock the roots of her mother's tormented past, but most of all, as Jessie grapples with the tension of desire and the struggle to deny it, she will find a freedom that feels overwhelmingly right.
What inspires the yearning for a soul mate? Few writers have explored, as Kidd does, the lush, unknown region of the feminine soul where the thin line between the spiritual and the erotic exists. The Mermaid Chair is a vividly imagined novel about the passions of the spirit and the ecstasies of the body; one that illuminates a woman's self-awakening with the brilliance and power that only a writer of Kidd's ability could conjure.
