Sacrificed to Aristotle and the Gods of Philosopohy.......2004-05-25

In this slim volume is packed the central thesis of one of the foremost students of Galileo:
1) that Galileo was not a victim of the inquisition but rather the Aristotelean method of reasoning particulars of Science from theoretical ideas. Galileo thought that experience, measurability and prediction should be the guide. Grand ideas he left to the Church and philosophers. Perhaps he was a little too naive in assuming that the inquisition would leave him alone. But it was in the defence of Aristotle that the inquisition indicted him. Not mere religious intolerance (which of course there was plenty).

The other observation was the in-fighting and jockeying inside the academic community for political and religious favour -- the competition for well-paying university seats was intense and Galileo was a direct victim of academics who ruthlessly pilloried him to gain favour.

2) Galileo was no crusader directly challenging the power of the church. He in fact had many freinds as high-archbishops and even a was a personal friend of the Pope. His desire was never to challenge the church and the church only very reluctantly charged him with "teaching" the doctrine of Copernicus and Kepler.

This is a great jumping off point for further studies on Galileo. I love this series.

This volume is a very useful synthesis of trade and growth theory, pulling together a lot of related models and presenting them in a systematic manner with unified notation. One is struck at the end how much the results turn on traditional differences in factor usage intensities across industries, and as a consequence, how non-robust many the results are in a prescriptive sense.

It struck me as odd why Gene Wilder would be interested in Internet Stock - maybe it was his hobby, or perhaps in the passing years he had found himself a whole new career via his computer. But no.
Amazon have credited Mr Wilder incorrectly as being the co-author of this work; they even have it linked to his DVD's and his (genuine) writing. You wouldn't know this unless you opt to go look at a huge scan of the book's cover where all will be revealed to you: the co-author is Gene WALDEN.
Poor Mr. Walden, his one claim to fame snatched cruelly from his hands by a typographical error. Never mind. With any luck, Amazon will credit you playing Willy Wonka.

Peggy's Follow-up Review-3 years later.......2003-10-20

The Dot.com has dot.bombed--and this cipher selection stands as mute testimony to the reality that these two "rang the bell at the top" of the internet bubble by rushing this embarrasing collation into print.

Of their "Top 10" THREE are no longer in business, or are barely able to stay listed on exchanges, and the other 7 are equally ugly.

When Walden wrote his self-aggrandizing review, he stated there would be the potential for a 75% swing DOWN in a stock. HE A) wrote that after the bottom fell out of internet stocks, B) failed to warn that the "upper number" was closer to 98% swing down, not 75%, and C) failed to give eBay its due, a very very successful internet stock "to own."

And they BOTH missed PayPal, the young internet upstart--in business when they wrote this tout, who blew eBay's Billpoint in house payment service plumb off the race track as well.

Those who want to know what to short and when to short should be the only ones to buy Walden's advisory books...he's rung the bell at the top more than once by his cookie cutter, rush to press, just as the "game" is over and the momentum players surge to a new gambit tack. A review of his titles bears out this historic reality.

Better book exists elsewhere.......2000-07-28

I agree with Peggy, this book doesn't have much meat even just for surveying the internet stocks landscape. "100 Best Internet Stocks to Own" by Greg Kyle does a much better job in this respect by providing more information on each company's background, major turn points of stock prices in their history, analysis of business challenges as well as opportunities. More informative and more insightful. Put these two books side by side, you'll notice the difference in no time.

Peggy Mannix has completely missed the point (and value) of Walden's latest book, and apparently didn't read his introduction. Yes, many of the stocks have gone down in value due to the correcting marketplace, but the point of the book is to provide guidance for those of us who want to include Internet companies as a part of our portfolios. I found the discussion about the many facets of the Internet marketplace extremely helpful in understanding how the new economy operates. As the title says, these stocks are "for the long run." If you're looking for get rich quick picks, look elsewhere. If you're looking for solid advice about incorporating internet stocks into your portfolio, Walden's book can be of tremendous help.

A Great Source For Internet investing.......2000-06-02

What a find! This book lays out in clear, easy to understand terms the important points of Internet investing. I learned the ins and outs of how to invest in Internet stocks, and was able to get a real understanding of the key sectors of the Internet economy. The profiles of these 100 top companies were concise and well-written, as I've come to expect from Gene Walden's other 100 Best Stock books. And the tables and graphs in each profile provided a good perspective on the 100 companies. It's the best source yet for Internet investing! I would recommend it for any investor who wants to make big money in the Internet market.

A Wonderful Read.......2007-10-08

This was my first Ayelet Waldman book, and I absolutely loved it. The self discovery of the main character Emilia in regards to her relationships with her stepson, step-sisters, her parents, and the death of Isabel was truly eye opening. I think every women can relate to the overwhelming grief Emilia experiences over the death of her child. The author is able to show the growth in the main character by allowing us to see how her past actually impacted and influenced the life she chose for herself. The authors knowledge and use of Central Park as a key player in the lives of these character was really enjoyable. It was as if the reader was able to discover and learn about the park at the same time. Just from reading this book I can honestly say that I am looking forward to taking my own son to visit the park when he is a little older.

Amid the glowing reviews, the only way to get an objective view of this book is to read the 1-star comments from other readers. It would save you from having to read the book and then write the negative comment yourself.

This is the first time I've read a novel by Ayelet Waldman and I didn't know that her husband is a famous author -- so I had to judge it by its own merit. And the verdict is that with or without help, the author is a terrible writer!

Thoughts from an infertile.......2007-08-15

I find that when I read books dealing with the topic of child or pregnancy loss I have a difficult time being objective. This piece was no different. As someone who as dealt with the struggles of infertility for may years, I felt consumed by the familiar feelings of loss that form the basis of the book's plot.

While I did not have a difficult time understanding the main character's feelings of isolation, I did have difficulty with her lack of strength. I wonder if there will ever be a book where the character dealing with such a struggle is not portayed as desperate, angry and self-absorbed. I can understand and appreciate the feelings of the main character, but am uncomfortable with the lack of personal integrity. I wish there was a better balance between the desire to continue living and the desire to make peace with the loss. Instead, the main character get wrapped up in subplots that seem to disrespect the nature of her experience.

I was a bit disappointed by the amount of gratuitous sex and swearing in a book that seemed to want to deal with loss. Yes, I realize this was the author's way of creating a realistic character and developing relationships, but it just didn't feel true to me. Had the plot stayed faithful to the progression of this woman's journey, and how that affected friendships and future plans, I would have felt more attached.

As a reader on the beach, this was a great book to pass the time, but as an infertile, and author of The Empty Picture Frame: An Inconceivable Journey Through Infertility who looks to the media to accurately portray this disease, I was a bit disappointed. I realize this is fiction, but even in fiction, things shouldn't always be tied up with a nice neat ribbon.

Love New York City!! A 2007 Favorite -- Must Read!!.......2007-05-29

A great read with terrific characterizations. I still miss the inhabitants of this almost too short [almost perfect] gem! I love New York, & the 92nd Street Y is one of my favorite places -- along with Central Park, etc. Emelia's depression is palpable, but don't be stopped from reading this triumph of a book. William is just terrific!! The dialogue sparkles & is realistic. Emelia's spouse is sexy & smart -- caught, at times between a rock and a hard space. I loved this book & I can't wait to read "Daughter's Keeper!"

A Strong Sense of Character.......2007-04-20

With each book, Ms. Waldman grows as an author capable of creating characters worth caring about and admiring. This could be considered a coming of age novel despite the protagonist's being a woman in her 30's. Also, by setting it in New York, Waldman actually makes Central Park a major character rather than just a location where key scenes play themselves out. The Park, in all its mercurial attitudes, plays its part in shaping the human's actions and setting their courses. Also, Waldman has a particular gift for dialogue. Her conversations ring true. I look forward to her next book.
