      Book Description

This unique leadership development program is for the young adult who aspires to be an exemplary leader. From the college classroom to the local youth club, the Student Leadership Practices Inventory has helped thousands of young people assess their leadership potential and improve their skills. Drawing from years of impeccable research and real-world experience, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have developed four practical resources that can be used alone or in a workshop setting: the Self, the Observer, the Student Workbook, and the Facilitator's Guide.

Both the Self and Observer are questionnaires for the student leader and the person who has observed the student in action. Each survey features thirty statements based on five important leadership practices: Challenging the Process, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Enabling Others to Act, Modeling the Way, and Encouraging the Heart. To score their results, participants will find in the Student Workbook grids for recording scores, charts for interpreting scores, and worksheets for summarizing and planning action steps.

For those who need guidance in designing and conducting a student leadership program, there is the Facilitator's Guide. In addition to detailed instructions and examples, workshop leaders will find masters for overhead transparencies and handouts, checklists for meeting the leadership challenge, normative data on different types of student leaders, and instructions for obtaining computerized scoring software.

          Book Description

When Comet Halley made its spectacular visit to the inner Solar System in 1910, miners in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, refused to enter the mines on May 18th, the day Earth passed through Halley's tail; farmers in Wisconsin took down lightning rods so as not to attract dangerous comet-substances; and the blackmailer of the great opera tenor Enrico Caruso was so frightened he confessed to a long-unsolved murder. But the story that a cult in Oklahoma was stopped just short of sacrificing a virgin to the comet was a tale fabricated for East Coast newspapers. Halley's last visit, in 1985-86, caused far less tumult, but the visit in 2134 will bring the comet so close to Earth that Halley's orbit will be permanently alteredit may never be seen again. The twentieth century has been a disappointment, comet-wise, but the object now approaching, Comet Hale-Bopp, bears a striking resemblance to the Great Comet of 1811, the biggest-headed and most enduringly visible comet eve! r known. Will Hale-Bopp be our Comet of the Century?

In this book, whose publication is timed to coincide with Hale-Bopp's first naked-eye appearance in the evening sky, the renowned astronomy writer Fred Schaaf offers a delightful history of all the greatest comets ever recordedthe astonishing lore, the even more astonishing science, and how you can participate in comet history by catching a glimpse (maybe more than a glimpse) of one of the great comets of the century.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than Hale-Bopp.......2002-03-22

Although written with the then forthcoming appearance of
comet Hale-Bopp in mind, this book well repays reading now
that Hale-Bopp has left the inner solar system. The accounts
of prior comets, laced with the authors personal experiences,
were fascinating. I hope that a great comet of the 21st century
appears, so that Schaaf can update this book and include a
report on his observations of Hale-Bopp to match those he
          gives of comet Hyakutake.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on comets.......1999-06-13

Don't be fooled by the title. True, this book was inspired by Comet Hale-Bopp, which has come and gone, but it's really about comets in general--only three of the fifteen chapters are about Hale-Bopp--so this book is still worth reading. The author discusses what comets are, how comets have figured in history, how they form, and the wonders of great comets like Halley's . The author has a lively, friendly style that readily communicates his enthusiasm for the subject. That, plus the clear and substantial writing, make this book a joy to read. He does for comets what Ken Croswell's book PLANET QUEST does for extrasolar planets. Highly recommended--even if you can't see Hale-Bopp any more.

          4 out of 5 stars Mostly a fizzle.......1998-06-20

Having read this book after the fact, I didn't get to experience the anticipation that the author so obviously felt about the impending arrival of Hale-Bopp. As far as I could tell (and admittedly I am no astronomer), Hale-Bopp was not really spectacular. I did see it on the western horizon a couple of times, and it was interesting but not particularly exciting. Reading the tales of other comets was much more fun for me. I heard my grandmother talk about the 1910 appearance of Halley's Comet, and how it frightened so many people. Her father was a Lutheran minister, and many of his congregation came to him asking if it was the end of the world. His answer was, "If it is the end of the world, there's nothing we can do about. I'm going to bed. Good-night." Even though we know so much more about comets nowadays, they are still a frightening phenomenon for many people, and some even go crazy. Witness the suicide cult in California who thought a spaceship would be accompanying Hale-Bopp especially to pick them up! But even though Hale-Bopp was a dud (at least for the layperson), I think this book is very enlightening for the historical perspective. The author's enthusiasm for his subject makes his writing very entertaining, and he doesn't bore the average person with technical jargon and erudition.

            Book Description

Crystallization is one of the oldest separation processes used in the chemical industry and is still one of the most important. It is also going through an exciting renaissance with the result that it is becoming yet more central to the needs of the modern chemical industry. As well as its long-standing use in the commodity chemicals business, it is central to the fine and speciality areas. The emphasis in crystallization has thus been changing from the simple production of bulk solid particles to one in which ever higher standards and reproducibility of particle size, size distribution, crystal form and particle morphology are demanded in both product and process development.

The formal systems of logic have ordinarily been regarded as independent of biology, but recent developments in evolutionary theory suggest that biology and logic may be intimately interrelated. In this book, William S. Cooper outlines a theory of rationality in which logical law emerges as an intrinsic aspect of evolutionary biology. He examines the connections between logic and evolutionary biology and illustrates how logical rules are derived directly from evolutionary principles, and therefore, have no independent status of their own. This biological perspective on logic, though at present unorthodox, could change traditional ideas about the reasoning process.

Laws of decision theory, utility theory, induction, and deduction are reinterpreted as natural consequences of evolutionary processes. Cooper's connection of logical law to evolutionary theory ultimately results in a unified foundation for an evolutionary science of reason. It will be of interest to professionals and students of philosophy of science, logic, evolutionary theory, and cognitive science.

2 out of 5 stars Of Very Little Use.......2003-06-26

In _The Evolution of Reason_, William S. Cooper shows that, using a simple decision theoretical model of evolution and another of the environment you can find the seeds of classical analytical thought. He does this by "reduction," showing that "evolution" requires decision theory, which in turn requires probability theory, and so on down to basic propositional logic. Although this is precisely the opposite of what is usually meant by reduction in mathematics, Cooper is trying to give a "scientific" or empirical underpinning to the rules of rational thought rather than to begin with a priori assumptions about truth, such as the law of the excluded middle, or the most elegant -- that is to say, smallest -- batch of primitive assumptions. It should be clear that every step except the first is valid.

This is only half of the book, however. In later chapters, he examines complications to his model to see how they affect his derivation, and upon this basis makes some suggestions about how logic as a discipline should be practiced. Although a simplification, I think it is fair to say that he would like further reasoning about logic to be descriptive, to show how we should think in light of biology instead of some

The major annoyances from this book come are in its tone: the author constantly compares himself with Copernicus, Newton, and Einstein and calls his thesis "scientific," even though it is based in no way upon empirical data, or even "evolutionary theory," as he claims. Like many theorists with radical conjectures, he chides (unnamed) people for trying to think of situations in the world that could actually test the hypothesis, and the empirical arguments he does refute are obviously straw men.

The least satisfactory part of the book is the identification of an ill-defined concept of fitness (which the author himself says he doubts) with subjective utilities. In particular, he postulates intelligence to be evolution by other means by imposing on human judgment that the limit of subjective probability assessment be objective probabilities and the limit of utility (happiness) assessment be evolutionary fitness (more or less, fertility rates).

Were this book less expensive, I would think about using it in a freshman or sophomore-level logic class in conjunction with Flew's _Thinking About Thinking_. Its earlier sections are a good introduction to the connections between differently levels of mathematics, its various discussions of plausible inference and subjective probability are accessible, and its later interpretations show logic to be alive in a way that could encourage students.

Usually, I wouldn't recommend it to the general reader, however I think that because of currently fashionable academic trends, it is likely that Cooper's theory or one very much like it will become very popular in the coming decades, and it might behoove an interested party to be familiar with it beforehand.

                  Book Description

Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, "Brokeback Mountain" is her masterpiece.

Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they're working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer.

Both men work hard, marry, and have kids because that's what cowboys do. But over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important thing in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it.

The New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of "Brokeback Mountain," and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the world's violent intolerance.

5 out of 5 stars It's a story of love that can never be... not sex........2007-08-25

It doesn't matter if you're straight or gay... this is a story of love that can never be. If anyone has every been in a relationship that just can't happen, this story will hit a nerve.
                  **SPOILER ALERT**
The sex part of Brokeback Mountain is so minimal, it's not even really an issue. So get over that.
                  **END OF SPOILER ALERT**
The story tugs on the heartstrings on those who can understand what it's like to be in relationships that aren't working, but they're stuck... and when you meet someone or you're wanting to be with someone, yet it's just not possible. It truly shows how two people, over the course of twenty years, can honestly care and love each other. It reaffirms that love knows no distance, boundaries, number of years, or gender or sexual orientations. Love is just purely that... Love.
Brokeback Mountain is exactly what our world needed, at at time, where understanding and compassion for one another is often disregarded.

5 out of 5 stars As beautiful as it gets.......2007-07-20

Brokeback Mountain is a poem hidden away under beautiful prose. It is a short story, about 55 pages, yet it is profoundly heartwarming, with a subtle flow of true emotions and comes across as a refreshing, cool, light rain showering on your heart but comes back to haunt you and touches your soul in the deepest way.

I had seen the movie last year. It was kind of slow, but the beauty of the story was uniquely brilliant. So when I saw the book at the library I instantly grabbed it and read it within a couple of hours. It is all about 2 guys, Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, coming to know each other while herding sheep on Brokeback mountain. It is the sad story of their difficult lives, separate yet entwined, and your heart reaches out to them. It is a remarkably enchanting story of forbidden love and longing.

The prose is astoundingly elegant and beautiful. Annie Proulx, critically acclaimed author and Pulitzer prize winner, writes as if painting a beautiful picture. The story flows like a serene river - quiet, beautiful, calm and exceedingly sure of itself. See a couple of excerpts to get a taste of her eloquent prose-

"They stood that way for a long time in front of the fire, its burning tossing ruddy chunks of light, the shadow of their bodies a single column against the rock. The minutes ticked by from the round watch in Ennis's pocket, from the sticks in the fire settling into coals. Stars bit through the wavy heat layers above the fire. Ennis's breath came slow and quiet, he hummed, rocked a little in the sparklight and Jack leaned against the steady heartbeat, the vibrations of the humming like faint electricity and, standing, he fell into sleep that was not sleep but something else drowsy and tranced until Ennis, dredging up a rusty but still usable phrase from the childhood time before his mother died, said, "Time to hit the hay, cowboy. I got a go"."

"Without getting up he threw deadwood on the fire, the sparks flying up with their truths and lies, a few hot points of fire landing on their hands and faces, not for the first time, and they rolled down into the dirt. One thing never changed: the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings was darkened by the sense of time flying, never enough time, never enough."

... and I never get enough of stories as beautifully told as this. Never enough.

                  5 stars, if not more.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great reading!.......2007-05-31

I really enjoyed Campbell Scott's reading of Brokeback Mountain, by Annie Proulx. I'd read the story several times before, and HEARING it was wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars You Won't Want it to End.......2007-05-21

Although some say the book is not as good as the moving, this compelling story will leave you wishing it was longer.

                  3 out of 5 stars Brokeback Mountain.......2007-03-29

I found the movie to be much more entertaining, I was kind of let down by the book, maybe because it was a short story.
