                Book Description

Suffer in silence no more. Now, from the authors of the bestselling Dinosaur Brains, here is a witty, informative, and devilishly. perceptive look at the club-wielding, cave-dwelling boneheads who can make life in the office so miserable. With the plainspeaking, success-oriented advice of Neanderthals at Work, you can rise above primitive behavior and take the evolutionary leap into an enlightened and more productive workplace. Once you learn to undo the first rule of Neanderthal thinking -- Us vs. Them -- you'll quickly identify these stone-age throwbacks and begin to deal with them effectively:

Competitors -- To them, if you're not a Winner you're a Loser. Rebels -- Creative innovators, they always avoid the three Ps: paperwork, politics, and people problems.

Believers -- They work hard, follow the rules, and never get promoted.

Whether your goal is getting ahead or just coexisting peacefully, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to survive and thrive in the ultra-competitive workplace of the 1990s.

5 out of 5 stars Straight-forward speak for the politics of the office.......2007-09-12

I'm a Believer (with a good helping of Rebel). This book is amazing and enlightening. I've recommended it to several people already (even though I just finished reading it today). I'm about to buy several copies and give them to others I know who could benefit from this knowledge. Absolutely recommended for anyone who can't figure out why the other people in their office "just don't get it."

4 out of 5 stars taming the tension..........2001-06-04

I work with neanderthals and find this book so enlightening that I share with the neanderthals I work with! Now, I know what behavior to expect from my colleagues and stay 2 steps ahead and "think out of the box" when dealing with certain situations. In fact, it helped me manage tension and my own stress so that I can leave work with work and enjoy my down time more. Quci reading, easy to follow. The summaries are the best part and you don't need to read the whole book to get the whole story.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-Opener, at least for me.......1999-07-29

I read this book a few years ago, and I guess I owe the author a positive review, because it opened my eyes to the source of my own frustrations at work. Like many pop management/psychology books, NaW divides people into three categories: Believers, Rebels, and Competitors. Each has different attitudes toward The Rules, both Written and Unwritten. The first two groups have approaches that are...maladaptive, and I was rather shocked to recognize myself as being squarely in one of them. If the model fits your situation, you will find the book extremely useful. If it does not, you may at least find it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The most valuable book i've read about working. My 4th copy.......1999-02-04

I bought my first copy thinking that all those people causing me stress at work were "Neanderthals" As I read, I learned that all work centers have- and need each of three basic types, and to the other types in the office, I am their "Neanderthal" Very empowering, give a copy to you you boss, and to your favorite and least favorite co-worker. I'm replacing my own copy, as it never gets returned when borrowed, only passed off to others. Good Reading, fast, to the point.

                      Book Description

What is Mars? From the ancients to the present, we have imagined Mars repeatedly and studied it longingly. As scientific knowledge of Mars has changed, so has the cultural imagination of this celestial neighbors. The earth-centered beginnings of astronomy connected the blood-red planet with the God of War. The Copernican Revolution and a later, simple mistranslation from Italian supported fantastic visions of distant Mars as the abode of life variously bizarre, ideal, or malignant. In the work of H. G. Wells and Orson Welles, in books, films, radio, and television, Mars reflected not only eternal hopes and fears but then-current political realities. In recent years, "NASA-fication" has brought Mars home, imagining the Red Planet almost as an eighth continent of Earth, a candidate for exploration and exploitation both in fiction and in fact. Rabkin weaves a chronological tale of many threads, including mythology, astrology, astronomy, literary criticism, and cultural studies. More than 60 brief chapters focus on people, events, or phenomena concerning the eternal object of curiosity, Mars. This rich series of readable, illustrated chapters can be sampled at will for the fun of discovery, read sequentially as a connected history, or enjoyed as a resource for the contemplation. Featuring over 100 illustrations, this unique examination of humanity's most storied companion serves as a resource for the study of ourselves.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading review above........2006-03-29

In the editorial reviews section further up on this page, they quote Choice magazine as saying, "[O]ften clever and even enlightening....Comprehensive collections." This is a decidedly misleading summary of Choice's review. What the review actually said was: "Although the McLuhanesque multiplicity of words and images is often clever and even enlightening, the book never settles into a discourse appropriate for scholars or engaging to general readers. ^BSumming Up: Optional. Comprehensive collections only." It is irritating when lukewarm reviews are presented as raves.

                        Book Description

Chemists today creatively use laser-generated photons as probes of molecular structure and as reagents to effect chemical transformations. A Guide to Lasers in Chemistry serves to introduce and illustrate the use of lasers in chemistry through specific case studies. The in-depth case glossary and appendices make this text an excellent reference tool for professionals. It is also appropriate for those preparing for research on the various uses of lasers or individuals who are interested in the use of lasers in chemistry.

4 out of 5 stars Almost a coffee table book..........2001-03-12

Lasers in Chemistry is a first glance a very easily accessible book with good use of figures and easily understood text. Additionally, the case studies outlined in the later chapter are particularly interesting and more comlete than I have seen in other texts.

However, for the average user of this book (an advanced undergraduate or graduate Chemistry student) a more advanced book such as Andrews' Lasers in Chemistry would be far more informative and equally well understood.

Perhaps a new edition of the book will add some necessary detail and improve on the organization of some of the topics.

                              Book Description

The somatic mechanism of change is little understood. Although astounding advances in molecular biology have opened up new engineering possibilities to "improve" the human species as well as eradicate all kinds of pathological characteristics, such possibilities pose potentially serious dangers. Evolutionary Change explores the biological mechanisms of change in their entirety as they fit into the general dynamics of biological systems and demonstrates the pitfalls of tackling change from too narrow a perspective. Using cancer as an example of certain pathological manifestations of these mechanisms of change, the author posits a challenging new theory of evolution.

                                Book Description

Linnet O’Neill, great-granddaughter of Emma Harte, finds herself following in the footsteps of the original woman of substance as she battles to modernize the family business. Returning from her honeymoon full of fresh ideas for bringing the Harte empire into the new century, Linnet locks horns with her mother, Paula, in a battle about the future...

Tessa Fairley is ready to start a new life after an acrimonious divorce—which might include rivaling her sister Linnet for the top spot in the Harte business.

India Standish, who is planning her own glamorous summer wedding in Ireland, is thrown off balance when her fiancé’s daughter Atlanta comes to live with them—closely followed by his unstable ex-girlfriend, intent on trouble.

Evan Hughes, their American cousin, unwittingly brings an enemy into their midst. But Evan’s sister Angharad, who tries to infiltrate the quartet of young women, meets Jonathan Ainsley, the deadly enemy of the Hartes.
Together, they find themselves in a web of vengeance whereby no Harte is safe.

                                2 out of 5 stars Only so-so.......2007-04-21

I loved A Woman of Substance, but reading this book, I felt like the author was phoning it in. No real plot development -- the bad guy is mean and sinister, does nothing that affects anybody, and then apparently dies. Big deal. And the characters lacked dimension -- the good guys were lovely and honorable and admirable, and the bad guys were laughably sinister and evil, like cartoon characters. Read BTB's earlier stuff and don't waste your time with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great Continuing Harte Family Saga.......2006-12-24

I really did enjoy this continuing saga of the Harte family and their ever-thriving Harte-empire.

Evan Hughes is preparing to marry her cousin Gideon Harte, and is pregnant expecting twin boys. India Standish is going to marry the artist Dusty Rhodes, and she is also pregnant with their first child. And Tessa, Linnet's sister and true rival in the Harte business is deeply in love with the famous Jean-Claude. They just become engaged in the book when Jean has to travel to Afghanistan to fight in the war, and Tessa is worried sick when he is suddenly reported missing over there.

Johnathan Ainsley is still after revenge for Paula for cutting him out of the family will. On the day of Evan's wedding he sets a bomb in the church and blows a big hole in the wall. Paula had a feeling that Johnathan would find a way for revenge at the wedding, so they wisely moved the time or the whole family would have been killed.

Linnet wants to modernize Harte Enterprises with many new exciting ideas, however her mother Paula, of whom is the boss of course, doesn't fall for this at all. Paula has never wanted to change the business from her grandmother Emma Harte's foundation. And Linnet was still trying to push these ideas on her mother in the office one day when Paula has a sudden aneurysm and is taken to the hospital very quickly. Paula has a very long recovery after this and may not be able to work again.

And to make all matters worse, Angharad Hughes, Evan's sister is engaged to the evil Johnathan Ainsley. No one can trust Angharad as she is a malicious person and has a jealousy that is awful in the family. Elayne, Evan's other sister is directly the opposite, and a very nice person.

The only thing preventing me from giving the book five stars is the author's singling out of Angharad and Elayne because they were adopted. They were not even included in the family tree at the beginning of the book, AND called "The Adoptees," very often when mentioned which I thought was prejudiced. Bradford also used the word "fondlings" when she spoke of them at one point in the story, and that seriously made me angry.
But other than that, it was a wonderful story and Bradford did an overall great job.

I took a Library copy of this book on a trip with me and left it at the airport. I later checked and it was not turned in so I had to replace it. I did finish the book and it was great, which is why I decided to take it with me in the first place, something I don't usually do. I just take a paperback for that reason in case it gets lost. Thanks

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing End (Yeah Right!) to the Series.......2006-06-27

With Just Rewards, BTB has managed to write the worst book of Woman of Substance series! Emma's Secret and Unexpected Blessings lacked a certain punch and certainly rewrote the history of the first 3 books. However, the characters in those 2 books were at least likable.

In this book, Linnet appears to be a unbelievable snob - pretty much turning up her nose at Evan's sisters because they're adopted (People without the noble Harte/Oneil/Kallinski) blood aren't as good as everyone else.

Evan's mother, father, and grandmother love Evan much more than her adopted sisters. Apparently, Evan's sister was a 'foundling' and has no chance of being as good as a Harte.

Evan is shocked that her father would feel that he is cut out of her life! However, she allows her 'in-laws' to plan her whole wedding, ends up having a secret ceremony in which she is more concerned that Paula and Shane attend than her own parents.

Paula, who used to be one of the smartest business women in the last 30 years, has all of sudden become one of the dumbest.

In the past, BTB made her heroines a bit too perfect - but at least down to earth. Now, we're supposed like people that seem to be insensitive snobs.

Also, this certainlly doesn't appear to be the LAST book of the series...
