simple, down-to-earth, and realistic. what i liked most about this book is the management application summaries in each chapters. however, i do sometimes get the feel in several chapters that the treatment of the topics are more encyclopedic. the book cover and some graphics are mediocre.

Excellent textbook even for professionals!.......1999-09-08

I have read many books regarding organizational behavior, and this is by far the best! I work as a management consultant specializing in organizational behavior change in Japan, and this book gives me hundreds of useful ideas. Actually "The Essentials of Organizational Behavior" by Dr. Robbins is translated into Japanese language, which is also a great book. "Organizational Behavior", however, is even better. Japanese translation wanted!

The Essential Textbook on Organizational Behavior.......1999-06-18

I have been an intensive reader of Professor Robbins' books since I was a grad student. What I recommend most out of his books is this "Organizational Behavior". Its comprehensive, albeit detailed and reader-friendly contents (e.g., lists of WWW URLs in each chaper to facilitate readers' in-depth learning) has always inspired me. Now, as an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, I am fully convinced of the fact that my students always thank me for adopting this book as the text of my course. I hope every substantial reader will find the significant usefulness of this book, the essential text.

Great introduction to organizational behavior........1999-05-18

The text was used for a graduate level class in the MBA Program at Oklahoma City University. As such, it is easy to see that it is an important tool to aid in understanding management of people in the American work place.

I do however have one criticism. The text does not do a good job at distinguishing between managing and leading. In my opinion, they are two different titles for those who take the reigns of an organiation.

Good OB text........2005-05-04

I Used this book for the Organizational Theory and Behavior class at Columbia Southern University. Easy to read through, and more valuable information in this book than in my last 6 management texts put together. I haven't read any other OB texts though, so I don't know how this one compares with others.

Overall great book covering all the concepts............2005-03-15

This book is a very easy read. Used it for a CTUonline.edu master's class on organizational behavior. I think almost all organizational behavior-related books cover mostly the same topics. I mean you either know your people or you don't. It's applied psychology. What made this book somewhat unique is that it often cited real life case studies of companies. It also offered various arguments and counterarguments of the different topics that the book covered, such as "does flextime lead to increased productivity?" and "can you teach leadership?"

I can disagree about the ease of understanding and the knowledge of Stephen Robbins, but Prentice Hall, the publisher of this book, has blown it. This book is filled with typos and misspellings.

For a $120+ book, I would hope they would put it in front of a copy editor.

Save the best for last! I am still reading this book and enjoying every page! Jan Karon's stories are never disappointing. I read it before bed,to inspire my dreams and for peaceful sleep after a hectic day!

I've found a good DVD set that will fill the void now that the series is over........2007-08-20

I loved this series. It helped me adjust to a new home in a new state. As I don't watch TV and couldn't find another book or series I liked as much I scoped out some BBC DVD boxed sets on Amazon and ordered them. Ballykissangel is about a Brithish priest who works in an Irish village. It's well written and fun to watch. And even better is a BBC series called Monarch of the Glen. It takes place in Scottland and is wholesome for the most part. There is also a show called Rosemary and Thyme about two British women who solve mysteries. The sets for these shows are very nice to spectacular. As far as finding an author to replace J. Karon...I'm still looking, but these DVDs are helping fill the void. Unlike the J. Karon books, my husband will partake in enjoying these shows.

Light from Heaven (The Mitford Years #9).......2007-08-05

When I started reading The Mitford Years #1, I couldn't put it down until I finished book #8. The story keeps you glued and you feel you know and love Father Tim and his wife personally. I was happy to find that there was a book #9 which brought the whole series to a close. You have to start at the beginning, but it's well worth the read.

An idyllic place.......2007-07-19

I read this final book in the Mitford series for two reasons: (1) I already owned it, having acquired the entire lot at once; (2) I had read the previous eight volumes in the series.

Jan Karon has the remarkable ability to create an idyllic place and time with words and then take the reader there. It isn't necessarily a realistic place, but neither was Oz. In this series, children are born and grow up. People marry and do not divorce. Older characters get sick and die. People do dumb things and tell jokes, just as in real life.

What is lacking in this book, however, as well as in the previous Mitford books, is a unified plot. Threads of plot appear and then fade. For the most part there are simply episodes, minor difficulties for the most part, and they are too often solved by prayer, rather than by logic and effort on the part of humans. I'm just not fond of deus ex machina solutions.

I was much more taken by the first four books of the series. Then Father Tim went off to the coastal island. There was a flashback book to recount how Tim got married. Etc. I found my interest waning with those. In this last book we return to Mitford and environs, and except for the prayed solutions, I was a happier reader.

As an aside: apparently the author is not much good at arithmetic and the editors at the publishing house aren't either. In Chapter Nine, Father Tim expresses his pleasure over the fact that his new congregation has expanded from seven to fourteen, "a whopping 50 percent...in the space of a single week, mind you." Now, if you double the number of parishioners, that would be a 100 percent increase, not 50. There's a term for this sort of flaw: innumeracy, the failure to learn math.

As a further aside, there are confusing errors in grammar and syntax. For example, on the same page as the above is the line: "When Lloyd had gone home to the ridge, he sat with Cynthia in the library and totted up the numbers." The pronoun "he" should refer to the closest antecedent, in this case, Lloyd. But only by going back over this and reading on do we realize that the he is in fact Father Tim and not Lloyd at all. This is not pedantic nonsense; this is a plea for clarity. Apparently book editors don't pay much attention or don't know any better.

I'd rate this four stars, the book and the series, for the atmosphere and characters alone.

Light from Heaven.......2007-07-05

Nine may be an unlucky number for Jan Karon. The first eight Mitford novels were delightful. Somehow in writing the ninth, she forgot to put in a plot. The book jumps from vignette to vignette, some only a few sentences long. The repetition of pet words and phrases, from "buddyroe" to "consider it done," are wearing in this book. She should have stopped at book number eight.

Like every other thing that's around us the music industry has a history, and the music industry has a dark and hidden history filled with events that are better left unsaid. Not in this book, it presents the history of music from the first recorded piece up to the MP3 digital era of this century. Good structure and revealing information will not let you drop this book out of your hands, it's captivating content and insightful advice about the industry are things that you just cannot miss when searching for information about this area

great retrospective look........2006-05-16

If you're interested in the past of the largest entertainment industry, this is the book for you. I think that by reading this and learning from the past, I am more prepared to become a successful leader in the music industry of the future. I recommend "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen in addition to this book. It's like they were meant for each other.

An Awesome Work of Scholarship.......2001-02-25

Okay, by no stretch of the imagination is this light reading. But there is nothing else like this book out there; nothing else gives you such a thorough picture of how the business of music in the 20th century has affected what we hear and buy and listen to.

The whole century is here: how the ASCAP/BMI battle raged for years and influenced everything from swing recordings to attitudes about rock and roll; how records and juke boxes and radio and movies changed the way writers made money; how recording artists "became" composers. And yes, here's one more way in which the Beatles changed the face of popular music.

In some ways the book can be disheartening for those who always figured that the world of popular music was a true capitalist meritocracy. But as the battle over napster and the net rages, it's interesting to see how the gulf between writers, performers, and the public has ALWAYS been a horrible morass of money, power, laws, unwritten rules, and manipulation.

This is a work of thorough and inpeccable scholarship. It's as if he knew that no one else was going to try to tell this story, so he'd better include every last tidbit. Fascinating in its detail, amazing in its scope, this is a must-read work for any student of American popular music.

The most captivating book I've ever read.......2005-08-12

This is such a powerful and inspirational book. I first read this book about 20 years ago as a teenager and I have loved it ever since, and have read it about 10 more times. I loan it out as often as I can. This is a beautifully written and detailed story of a woman remaining strong and faithful inspite of horrific circumstances. It tells of her struggles and how she set an example to her children to stay strong and honorable in all things. I hope this never goes out of print!

This is undoubtedly the most spiritually captivating book that I have read. I have read this book twice, a rare thing. Each time, it brings tears running down my cheek and a flood of joy and peace that take away the bitterness for the husband character. I have read this book 4 times, each time I read it, it is as moving as the first. It is an incredible story about an abusive home. It brings both joy and pain when reading, but is a story that truly touches the heart. I recommend this book for the young and old alike. Once you start reading it, you won't want to set it down.

Love for unloving husband, love for children & God.......1998-01-01

This is the story of a young wifes love for her unloving husband. Her husband did not want children as his wife did. They did have 3 though. The husband was quite envolved with church attivities but at home was totally different. He made his young children do all kinds of chores from the time they were quite young. His oldest son was continually getting whippings from the dad. The wife always taught the children to always love their father even if he didnt love them, and to always trust in God. This book is quite thick, but you will find it hard to put down. I dont want to say anything else about the story as you will want to read it to find out what happens. It will bring sad tears and tears of joy to your heart as you read it. It is really an enspiring story. It made quite an impact in my life.
