    Book Description

For Jack Foster, the primary job of a leader (what he calls an "Ideaer") is to raise people's self-esteem, make it fun to come to work, and in the process help both employee and employer boost productivity in an increasingly competitive marketplace. In Ideaship, he simply and compellingly describes 39 ways to unleash workers' creativity.

The book covers a wide spectrum of strategies that are both practical and inspirational. Chapters include "Don't ask for one solution -- ask for many", "Allow them the freedom to fail", and "Give them more than one problem at a time".

3 out of 5 stars This simple book is more worthy of being a Readers Digest article........2007-06-15

This is a simple book with a straightforward message; keep the work environment positive and challenging. The messages are good ones. There's not too much to the book beyond a series of motivational thoughts. In theory they are certainly good concepts to target. Just about everything that needs to be said can be read in the table of contents.

The idealism is positive. I disagree with taking employee trust to the degree of not verifying that people are not misbehaving. The example given of a manager not reviewing employee expense reports because trust is important is a terribly naive and irresponsible suggestion. A manager who fails to make sure that people remain honest and trustworthy is not only sending the wrong message, he/she is failing to do the job he/she is supposed to be doing.

So, this is a good read. It's a very simplified version of "How to Win Friends and Influence People." It's a list of inspirational sentences that could be made into a series of motivational posters. It's not worth stretching it into a book. Many of the pages are simple illustrations or large font short paragraphs. This is not a book; it's a Readers Digest article.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Simplicity.......2002-11-23

This is a splendid book and a must for all Leaders and Managers. A lot of stuff recommended by Jack Foster are not only applicable to business situations, but also to life in general. Very easy to read, the book describes the simple stuff that we can do to generate ideas, and the author does it in a ridiculously simple way.

It's not a matter of doing something massive in order to achieve great results. It's all about having a heart, and you will get the maximum output with very little effort.

5 out of 5 stars Turn on the light bulbs!.......2002-02-06

In a word, OUTSTANDING! Ideaship is a must read for all supervisors and managers who want to assist their people in becoming more vital to their organizations. I only wish I had this book in my hands years ago... but it's okay, I've got it now!

Jack Foster's insights are practical, humorous, and so very down-to-earth. He offers such a fresh approach to even the very basics of motivation and creativity. You're gonna love the many new words Jack will add to your vocabulary too. You might even become "ideaized".

Larry Corby's illustrations add the icing to the cake. Every few pages are sparkling with whimsy... I never knew a light bulb could smile.

Do your brain cells a favor and buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars My Problems with "Ideaship"........2002-01-22

I have two problems with "Ideaship". The first is with the subtitle, "How to Get Ideas Flowing in Your Workplace". No question, this book is certainly a valuable guide for that, but it's a lot more. A few chapters into the book, it occured to me that the suggestions Mr. Foster was outling to generate ideas are, surprisingly, even more valuable for generating meaningful personal relationships--in or out of the workplace. You needn't be on the employment rolls to benefit from "Ideaship".

My other problem with this book? I now live in fear that those few, benighted people that found themselves working for me will read "Ideaship" and--if they ever had any doubts--now have confirmation that they worked for an unenlightened ninny. Where was "Ideaship" when I needed it?

If you are responsible for the output of fellow workers, or know someone that is, give yourself, or that someone, "Ideaship". Beyond that, if no one is below you on the work ladder, or if you are nowhere near a work ladder, you'll find that "Ideaship" has something (or, in fact, many things) grand to say to you about enhancing your personal relationships.

5 out of 5 stars PRIMER FOR ALL CREATIVE DEPARTMENTS!.......2001-12-15

Having run two sizeable advertising agencies, I can attest to the fact that Mr. Fosters' incisive book should become the primer for all creative departments. He cuts to the chase and tells it like it really is. Follow his lead and a creative department will hum!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW... very helpful!.......2000-04-21

WOW! That was my first impression of this book. The information contained has helped me to see exactly what I need to be doing about a job, step by step. It shows you what reasons there are for working, how to prepare yourself for todays work world, how to plan a job campaign, organize your job campaign, market yourself, how to contact individuals, how to interview and what to do when deciding where you will work. This information meshed dramatically with my interest in finding out what I need to be doing about getting a job. I knew that contacting individuals and then speaking to them was a great step, yet I never knew the nitty-gritty details of everything. I was very impressed to find a section of the book that will match your major to your career. This book explains from school to the real world, what you can do to better your learning. This organization helped because it presents the information in a road map form. I usually like to do things in a very organized fashion. I like to make lists and see what I have accomplished, what I need to accomplish and what the best way is to go about doing things. I like to see how you start from scratch, building and building and then have a great final picture or project. I feel that the information in this book is presented to me in this type of form, even including checklists for me to use, relating to what I have accomplished. I feel that this information will be a good wrap up tool to organizing my thoughts before going into an interview for either a job or an internship, thus I feel more comfortable having found these tools to keep me on track with what I should be doing.

                    Book Description

In an age of x-ray telescopes and interplanetary probes it is easy to dismiss pre-scientific cosmologies as naive expressions of fear, hope, and superstition. But, if science teaches us anything, it's that the pursuit of truth begins and ends with humility. What are the stars? How big is the universe? As readers of this fascinating exploration of humankind's efforts to map the universe will discover, after 50 centuries the questions remain the same. Only the tools we use to try to answer them have changed.

Co-published with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum to be the official book of their new permanent exhibit, “Explore the Universe,” Beyond Earth is a celebration, in brilliant pictures and words, of cosmologies including ancient China, pre-Columbian America, classical Europe, and 20th-century astronomy. In it many of today's leading lights in the sciences, arts, and humanities share their personal insights and professional observations on the art and the science of cosmological thinking, from the Aztec calendars to the Hubble Space Telescope images of the Horsehead nebula. How did they envision the mysteries of the cosmos and creation? How did they map the night sky? How do we perceive the universe today? Luminaries such as Nobel laureate in physics Robert Wilson, astrophysicists Vera Rubin and Margaret Geller, and Harvard historian Owen Gingerich attempt to answer these and other fascinating questions by exploring an array of cosmological visions as expressed in the art, architecture, and writings of cultures East and West.

With the opening of "The Explore the Universe" gallery at The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in September 2001, David DeVorkin (Editor) has assembled an impressive volume,"Beyond Earth: Mapping the Universe". In full color thirteen specialists have written chapters dealing with "The Classical Universe", "The Modern Universe Emerges" and "The Current Universe". Using present day tools astronomers are now attacking the same old unsolved problems.
This volume should be in the library of all Physical Scientists.

I have worked in the field of analytical chemistry for several years. This ranks as the best "how-to" text I have found to date. 5 out of 5 stars Charles Darwin and the Creation of a Problem.......2004-02-13

Pegged around the twin themes of Foucault's epistemes and Kuhn's paradigms this cameo history places Darwin in the context of the Paley generation yielding to an age of positivism. This is a tale which is difficult to tell since the science bard chanting the mythical saga of the foundational moment seldom gets any further than epic mode in the stages of knowledge given by the Positivist Comte. Comte's stages, which people apparently took seriously, are highly misleading and don't correspond to a real picture of knowledge evolution. How speak of positivism if the result is a new myth for an age of science?
But this is a good history of Darwin's period and the naive triumph of Darwin's too limited theory, whose main effect was simply to a banishing ritual for the design argument.
That the division by episteme is oversimplified should be seen from the loss of substance in the period from Kant via Lamarck and Chambers to Darwin. The epistemic spectrum is reduced to the paltry pseudo-dialectic of the propagandists Darwin and Paley. Trying to overcome purposive explanation via natural selection was an imaginary triumph.
The attempt to judge the issue of Kuhn is virtually impossible for one immersed in such. If ever there was a Kuhnian transition followed by frozen brain syndrome it was the Darwinian Revolution (with all due respect to Bowler's Darwinian Non-Revolution). In a word the positivist methodology was inadequate for the job.
This is a good historical account in any case.

4 out of 5 stars Darwin as a thinking man relates to his world.......2003-09-11

The book's purpose is straightforward: using Foucault's epistemes and Kuhn's paradigms as organizing principles(chp 1) look at the life of Charles Darwin as an example of a man between worlds: the old episteme of creationism and the new biological paradigm of positivism. Asking himself the question "why does C.Darwin spend so much time and effort rebuttalling the various arguments that the creationists present" rather than a strict presentation of his views, the author walks through the intellectual life of Darwin as the first modern biologist who left one toe in the old theological-saturated world, that of a general theist.

From pg 3 "The positivist limited scientific knowledge, which he saw as the only valid form of knowledge, to the laws of nature and to processes involving "secondary", or natural, causes exclusively. The creationist, on the other hand, saw the world and everything in it as being the result of direct or indirect divine activity. His science was inseparable from his theology. His epistemology was closely geared to a metaphysics, and in metaphysics he tended to be an "idealist". To comprehend nature fully, for a scientist of this persuasion, was to understand the workings of the mind of the Creator."

I liked the way he organizes around the epistemes/paradigms, in doing so he often presents the humanity of the scientists involved in the discussion, this makes the ideas so much more real as you realize that although the people are long dead, they are human in the conflicts and heart-break they went through to arrive at their beliefs, to write their books. Darwin especially comes across in the book as a human being, sympathetic but driven by the tenor of his times as much as he added to the pressure to switch epistemes with his thought. The consistent technique presented in the book revolved around his relationships with individuals whether through letters or reactions to books and the way his ideas and theirs fought, twisted together, or passed into oblivion depending upon the greater movement of ideological systems which emerged in the mid 19thC.

The big take home message of the book is simple enough. It was Darwin's desire to free science from the miracles that by necessity are attached to creationism. Underneath this is the idea that miracles are violations of natural law and as such elements of the capricious, the mysterious, the unpredictable that he wished to ban from science, if not as impossible then at least as unscientifically explainable. A second major theme, the topic of several chapters is the relationship of design and purpose as underlying the old creationist episteme and the consistent attempt by Darwin to eliminate this type of thinking all together from biological explanations.

Gillespie, as a historian, presents the ideas with an eye to the underlying forces that move people to certain ideas, this is akin to the "ideas were in the air" but more detailed. One push to change epistemes emerges in chpt 3 "Darwin and positive science" where he writes "the new was asking question that the old could neither frame nor answer." pg 53 This is the effect on systematic thinking of the new data, the facts that flowed into Europe with the great voyages of discovery, Darwin's on the Beagle included. To much of the old thinking stopped with the "God did it" type of explanation, the utility of the new episteme was obvious in that it allowed, even drove deeper levels of explanation. It is these levels, this complex unification of disparagent facts where big important patterns emerge, where the new paradigm shines, it works to build laws and theories that have great explanatory and utilitarian power.

On the question of design, "But in giving up Paley's simple and direct empiricism for an idealism which substituted an intuitively perceived plan behind the adaptations for the adaptations themselves, the design argument was, to the positivist, on less relevant ground scientifically. It had, by abandoning the empirical world, removed itself from the area of science and entered that of religion. When, eventually, belief in design became an act of faith in an incomprehensible divine wisdom and its ends, the idea of design, ceased to have any potential value as a scientific explanation: its assertions were unverifiable and hence useless." pg 85 The argument in biology was how to eliminate the purpose that came so naturally to discussions of living things, for it is obvious that living things move and act with a purpose, from Aristotle on in western thought, biology was literally saturated with this purposefulness. Darwin's proposed mechanism of random variation-natural selection(becomes RM-NS in 20thC) was the first fully mechanistic technique proposed to chop off the link between organisms and their adaptation to local environments as a result of God's intervention. Once this link was severed there was nothing to stop the emergence of a fully positivist mechanistic biology to replace the Aristotle-biblical amalgamate that held sway in Western thought.

I appreciated this book, a great deal of detail about how principles interact, how epistemes collide, how people work out ambiguities and intellectual paradoxes is included, especially using Darwin as an example. Access to historical information as in the details of letters passing between him and numerous thinkers with substantially different intellectual priorities, and how these conversations modified beliefs and moved people to think differently is excellent. We miss all this human touch when we read history textbooks were names never seem to be real people, this is perhaps the best personal satisfaction from this book.

When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch–nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?

Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first–class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle–class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green–skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.

1 out of 5 stars It Would Put the Wicked Witch Off Reading.......2007-10-08

I got this book after seeing Wicked the Musical. The character of Elphaba, the predestined Witch, was presented as a sympathetic character. All of the book's best setup ideas are in the musical, and ideas that should have been obvious in the book but weren't were also in the musical. I made the mistake of getting this book to read all the details the musical didn't include.

Simply put, there are no details the musical doesn't include. Possible Spoilers: The foundation of the book is clever, but never developed: Elphaba is an outcast, made more so by her care for the Animals, the ones that can speak, that are being oppressed and worse. She gets hold of a magic book the Wizard can't read, and then proceeds to do nothing with it. Her relationship with Fiyaro, explained fully in the musical, is never explained in the book! Then there are the long, rambling conversations that go nowhere and have no point.
I think the author as a child must have been subjected to long, rambling & meaningless (to him) conversations between family members at social gatherings, as this is how he perceives all such gatherings; as much talk about nothing, vague (and obtuse) reflections on the "nature" of good & evil, etc; he presents all the characters as ninnies in their incoherent discussions, except for the Witch who also participates, and inevitably is seen as a ninny too for participating in them. The author does this dozens (and I mean dozens) of times in his book. To what purpose? It's never explained. What starts as a sympathetic character eventually grates on the nerves as she is never deveoped, her motivations become flatter and flatter, explanations are never forthcoming, and she's seen as weak & ineffective throughout the whole book. If she's so helpless, why does the Wizard see her as a threat? That's never explained either. The dialogue between characters is stilted, disconnected, sometimes illogical to the point where you're shaking your head and putting the book down to spare yourself a headache, when what you want is an engrossing and uplifting read. This book is the opposite of engrossing; it's off-putting, and a continual trudge uphill to find something meaningful in it.

Ultimately, you lose patience and start thinking for yourself about the giant plot holes and contradictions. For me the most basic one became this: Here we have the Wizard, a powerless man magically but who has a lot of guards & spies. Then we have the Witch, a natural magician, in possession of a dangerous tome, as well as part of a huge underground rebellion. The Wizard simply kidnaps her lover's family, and the Witch has to beg on her knees, crying, to the Wizard to get them back, without ever using her powers or her connections to save them. Is this consistent with the character? Is this our brave & indomitable Witch? Should we care about her after this as a viable or even an effective character, since she is not the character described at the beginning of this novel? We understand she's going to be different than the Baum character, but she should at least be consistent in some way within this story. Also the "huge rebellion" is hugely meaningless, as it never succeeds in anything and simply disappears eventually, never mentioned again!

The book makes allusions to Nazi Germany in its persecution of the Animals. In this author's view, from what he has written, Hitler would never have been defeated; he would simply have gone on and on, without opposition, as any rebellion or resistence is futile. And what is the point then? The author doesn't make one; we are left then with the author's perspective that true evil once in power can never be defeated, only endured till it kills us. Whether the author intended it or not, that is the moral of this book. Is it worth slogging through hundreds of pages of disconnected characters and events to get to that charming point?

I can't call it a story, as ultimately, it isn't one -just disconnected scenes & rambling, pointless dialogue. He really should have read his own book before publishing it. I don't understand why the people he credits for "reading the book early" didn't point out these giant flaws, the fact that she never (I mean never) uses her powers, and that she never develops (nor does anyone else) after college. Nor do I understand the Publisher not pointing this out and requesting a decent rewrite. (Which frankly, I think would have been beyond his capacity as a beginning writer). What he needed was an experienced (and better) cowriter to flesh out and develop the characters, and eliminate all of the rambling that does not progress or add to the story.

If you care for this character, don't read the book; you'll get no insight as to her motivations, or anything else.
You'll actually stop sympathizing and caring about her character. See the musical instead. The person that wrote the book for the musical did a better job than the author did in writing the novel. The musical Wicked is far better than this author deserves for it to be, considering the source material.

The musical does the Witch justice; this book, I'm afraid, does just the opposite, both for the Witch, and its readers.

5 out of 5 stars The misunderstood witch.... UNDERSTOOD!.......2007-10-05

What can I say about this book?
Only that it was a honorable classic. I was able to fully understand the madness of the infamous witch, her story corrected my thoughts. We were all lead to believe that Elphaba was hateful and despied poor Dorthey, but that was not the case according to Maguire's novel. As a little girl I asked myself why was she so wicked? and did she have a life before Dorthey's time? This book clearly gave me perspective in that matter. Elphaba's stormy, weird and excitable sexual relationship with Fiyero also mad me love this book, because who would think that The Wicked Witch of The West had sex? Maguire makes it loud and clear that she did and LOVED it!

Another creative part of this book was the description of Nessarose and Galinda. He allowed me to get a full review of the charaters of Oz. And as a child I was scared of Munchkinlanders and after reading this book I confired that I still am!

Filled with hidden messages and funny sexual acts Wicked turned out to be my most beloved book of this year (2007)
And I am off to Broadway to see the play...........

1 out of 5 stars Wicked Wasted My Week.......2007-10-05

Wow was I disappointed in this book!!! Had heard great things about it and thought the concept would be interesting. It was the furthest thing from interesting and in fact was the worst book I've read since high school.

The plot rambles with most of the book irrelevant to the "story". Characters come and go with no direction. They pop up, seem interesting, then they go away without much explanation.

I am no author, but I think Maguire really missed out on creating a truly interesting story. Would be nice if someone else took a real crack at creating somthing intriguing.

Luckily I just borrowed the book from my sister. Don't waste your hard earned cash.

3 out of 5 stars Enigmas, akimbo, and snares, Oh My!.......2007-09-28

I liked the book because of its originality.
However, the story would flow and then get stuck in its attempt to confuse and irritate the reader into skipping over big parts of the book.
The journey of the Witch is so convoluted, that I had to back track. Enjoying this book took a lot effort. I like to be entertained when I read fiction, not work myself into a dither trying to understand where the story is going. When it gets bogged down with theories and who is who and where and when,...it is rather boring. BUT.. the parts that tell you about her childhood, schooling...is entertaining.

                              1 out of 5 stars Horrors! Horrors!.......2007-09-23

This book was painfully disappointing. The plots meanders here and there and never fully develops. The writing is mediocre, and the book left me feeling cheated. The books sums itself up with the only funny line in it - "Horrors! Horrors!" Don't waste your time!
