Found Cooper's book to be a valuable resource guide. The guide is a practitioner based toolkit geared primarily for human resource managers with lots of application based how-to models, but not designed for the researcher. The software does not appear to be up to date and would not work on my Microsoft XP Professional computer.

Vaulable resource for HR and non-HR professionals.......2001-08-15

One of the most challenging tasks I undertake as an information technology (IT) consultant is developing organizational models that are designed to optimize IT service delivery to the business process areas that IT is chartered to support. Often I have found myself crossing boundaries between IT processes and the domain of expertise owned by HR. Ultimately HR is responsible for reviewing and approving my findings and recommendations, so this book is especially valuable in that it has enabled me to see the problems and challenges through the perspective of HR.

Among the unique perspectives that this book has provided me are: (1) there are vast differences between organizational and individual competencies. Both aspects need to be carefully examined before a viable solution that meets organizational and individual needs can be crafted. This is especially important for IT consultants because the workers remain in high demand and retention in the face of aggressive recruiting has to be factored in or your IT corporate knowledge and skills will migrate to competitors. (2) Determining whether the goal is quality or excellence. They are two different things and the definitions are hard to pin down. For example, is customer satisfaction a quality or excellence goal? In IT it can be both. (3) The fact that competency can be modeled and measured. Prior to reading this book I went on past experience and narrowly focused books such as IT Organization by Kern, Galup and Nemiro. While that book addressed IT organization from IT's perspective, it was missing the techniques and processes used by HR professionals. As such, the competency modeling and reporting (CMAR) process and associated techniques in Effective Competency Modeling & Reporting have enabled me to approach my analysis in a manner that is consistent with HR practices and produce findings and recommendations that an HR professional will understand.

Some of the other strong points about this book are: (1) it employs a coherent process that is augmented by software tools (Competency Coach® for Windows, whish is also provided on the CD ROM accompanying the book - the version that comes on the CD ROM has a limitation on the save function); (2) step-by-step procedures for performing competency modeling, (3) assessment procedures used to measure your results. In addition, the book includes a sample 72-item model that covers common competencies, a sample position standards spreadsheet, a sample skills-based assessment instrument and other files and artifacts that add considerable value to this book.

Bottom line: while this book is aimed at HR professionals, the information and approach provided is not limited to HR. As a reviewer who is not an HR professional I rate this book at five stars and give it my highest recommendation. I suspect HR professionals will do the same.

A readable basic introduction at the high school level.......2003-09-08

People looking for a simple introduction to the question of extraterrestrial life will find this book easy to read. Physics professor Parker begins with basic descriptions of life on Earth. He then devotes three chapters to Mars, including the possible existence of microfossils in a chunk of Mars that hit the Earth as a meteorite. Parker moves on to extrasolar planets and the radio search for extraterrestrial intelligence. After touching on interstellar flight, he closes with a discussion of the claim that Earth has been visited by aliens. All this adds up to a broad brush overview, leaving out most of the detailed arguments associated with this question. The writing, which avoids equations and elaborate statistics, seems to be aimed at the high school level. Some of the black and white illustrations, particularly the caricatures of scientists, are surprisingly crude.

General scientific introduction to the search for alien life.......1999-03-15

This book treats the topics of alien lives which usually appear only in science fiction novels. Contrary to the conventionality, the auther dares to challange this topic using the various aspects of scientific knowledges. Because there are virtually no evidence for the alien lives, these scientific knowledges are not fully utilized for solving the puzzles of alien lives or the related topics such as UFOs. However, this book teaches us the present state of scientific knowledges and the methods how to use them. This book is especially recommendable for young amateur astronomers or students who wish to be scentists in future.

Easy to read, balanced and highly recommended.......1998-11-23

Alien Life is an easy-to-understand survey of alien life. It goes from the biochemical origin of life on earth to possible Mars microfossils to the Drake formula to SETI to spaceflight to other suns with some discussion (dismissive but respectful) of UFOs. Parker is a scientist (Professor of Physics and Astronomy) but can write like a journalist; so the book is authoritative yet so well written that it almost breezes along in places. The whole presentation is very evenhanded. I like that. Too often I have purchased books that were peddling one point of view and shading the evidence without me knowing it until later. Not here though. Parker discusses pros and cons of several points of view, keeping the discussion balanced while making it all lively and interesting. Highly recommended.

Buyer Rejoice!!!.......2003-10-30

The reviewer who wrote under the title of "Buyer Beware" is badly informed if he/she thinks that people who study fossils are "archaeologists." In fact, archaeologists study the remains of past people, while paleontologists study fossils.

Dr. Robin Brown is indeed a retired medical doctor, but as an accomplished avocational paleontologist, he is one of the most respected experts on Florida's fossils in the state. He works regularly with paleontologists of the Florida Museum of Natural History (Florida's official natural history museum), and he has contributed numerous important fossil specimens to that institution.

If you are interested in an authoritative, easy-to-read, and beautifully illustrated guide to Florida's fossils, Robin Brown's book is for you.

Great Field Guide!.......2003-10-30

This great book sorts out the confusing and often contradictory jumble of fossils one finds when hunting in Florida. It is the only trade book available that does this. PLUS it has a fabulous section of photographs for help in identification. Whatever else he is, the author is a man of science!

Buyer Beware!!!.......2003-07-22

After reading this book, I am compelled to warn other would-be buyers to save their money. This is a book that does not live up to its title and seems to be riddled with factual and syntactical errors. Moreover, when I researched the author, I was intrigued to find out he is not an archaeologist or scholar at all but rather an M.D.(ENT) masquerading as an expert in archaeology. And, to top it off, it appears that the book is published by a press that specializes in travel books and cook books, not in serious subjects like archaeology. For those interested in the archaeology of Florida, I recommend the numerious well-written and well-researched books by the experts at the University of Florida or Florida State. Dr. Brown, the ear, nose and throat specialist, is simply out of his element in this book.
