What makes an organization great? After a four-year study of more than 1,000 companies worldwide, management consultant Jac Fitz-Enz says it is people--and the way they are developed and nurtured. In The 8 Practices of Exceptional Companies, he presents the top "human asset management" practices uncovered during his search and shows how other organizations can adopt them as their own. The result, he contends, will be higher profits along with more committed employees.
Book Description
"High-performance companies don't get the extraordinary performers they need by tossing another fad management program on their people. Instead, they adhere to fundamental beliefs and operating strategies that pay off in the long run--both in higher profits and more productive employees. Now the founder and president of the prestigious Saratoga Institute identifies best practices in human asset management. Based on four years of research involving more than 1,000 companies worldwide and filled with illuminating case studies, The 8 Practices of Exceptional Companies documents how the best organizations practice: . balanced value fixation . commitment to a core strategy . culture-system linkage . massive two-way communication . partnering with stakeholders . functional collaboration . innovation and risk . never being satisfied. The book shows managers and executives how to shift their primary focus away from short-term process improvement (reengineering, benchmarking, quality) and toward the enduring human asset management practices that can make these efforts long-term successes."
Customer Reviews:
The Best Human Asset Management Systems.......2001-08-12
"Although best practices and benchmarking have become intertwined topics for some people, this book is not a discussion of benchmarking. Instead, it is a discussion of our findings and opinions based on research into how effective companies manage the 'human asset'-the people whose efforts are the basis of any organization's success...This book is designed to serve two purposes. The first is to present the best human asset management practices that my organization, the Saratoga Institute, uncovered during a four-year study of over 1,000 companies. We learned that what constitutes best practice is an interactive set of eight organizational characteristics...My second objective is to expose the wasteful and misleading practices that cause three out of four improvement projects to fall short of their goals" (from the Introduction).
In this context, in Chapter 1, Jac Fitz-enz identifies the eight driving forces that make up the context from which the best human asset management systems (BHAMs) and processes are derived: an interwoven human-financial value focus, commitment to a long-term core strategy, linkage of culture and systems, massive multidimensional communications, partnering within and outside the company, collaboration within functional groups, innovation through well-planned and managed risk taking, and a competitive passion that is never satisfied with less than constant improvement. Hence, throughout the following chapters, he explains each driving force and presents case studies of BHAM companies both in the U.S. and abroad. And, at the end of each chapter, he gives a short checklist. He says that "build your best practices by answering to those questions, you will have the blueprint for being one of the best human asset management organization."
Finally, he writes, "Wouldn't it make more sense to accept the fact that complex problems can't be solved by simplistic programs or popular panaceas? Instead, take the time you might put into chasing the newest miracle cure and put it into:
* Focusing your organization on value
* Making a long-term commitment to a core strategy
* Linking your culture to your systems
* Communicating everything that people should know
* Partnering
* Being mutually supportive
* Innovating and taking well-considered risks
* Never getting complacent."
Highly recommended.
Exceptional Guidance.......2000-01-05
This is a dangerous book. Why? Because those who make a total, long-term commitment to the eight practices will create great turbulence which must be overcome. Most of the wounds which organizations experience are self-inflicted...including the damage caused by ignorance and arrogance. Perils are inevitable whenever bold initiatives are undertaken. For those unwilling and/or unable to make a commitment to achieving and then sustaining excellence, their cause is hopeless. Fitz-enz insists that the best organizations are led by those who effectively nourish as well as manage human assets. Organizations grow only to the extent that those who comprise them grow. As he correctly points out, "In a knowledge company, people are the only profit lever."
One final point: The best practices for any organization are often found within that organization. As a recruiting slogan for the U.S. Army suggests, "Be all that you can be." Stop looking for THE BIG ANSWER elsewhere. Look within yourself and within your own organization. Discover how to implement the eight practices in ways and to the extent that are most appropriate. Pogo once said, "We have met the enemy and he is us." Fitz-enz would perhaps accept a paraphrase of that: "We have found ways to be the best...and they are in us."ÿ

Verilog HDL Synthesis, A Practical Primer
ASIN: 096503917X |
Book Description
Second edition describes more features, has expanded test bench modeling section, more examples explaining constructs and has exercises to every chapter.
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointed.......2005-02-18
With such a high rating, I had hoped for something better.
If you are looking for a very introductory lesson on the workings of Verilog, this is for you. However if you are looking for something that will help you learn to write complex code, this is not it.
My biggest complaint is that this book needs to be hit pretty hard by an editor who actually understands Verilog enough to find the syntax errors and omissions in the example code. If this is supposed to be a "primer" all of the examples should be technically and syntactically correct, and they are not. I am able to find mistakes and this is my first foray into Verilog.
Also note: this does not teach anything about synthesizable code. That's another book, but the difference is never even mentioned. Almost everything in this book will help you learn how to write test benches for you synthesizable modules.
Not a very good book.......2005-02-05
Occasionally you see books that seem to be compiled by the author's lecture notes, this is one of them. It would still be ok if the notes were good, however this one isn't. It does it's job presenting the basics of Verilog, but on harder to understand concepts such as blocking/non-blocking procedural assignments and procedural continuous assignment, the author does an aweful job explaining it, which is where it counts the most. Similar problems appear throughout the book, and I can never understand why it has attained a four star rating, which is when I purchased it. If you can find a better book, go for it!
A must have book.......2002-08-24
While some might say that it's a beginners' book, you will
end up using this book the most. I have several Verilog
books in my cube at my work, but this is the book my
colleagues come very often to look up. This has excellent
and authentic descriptions of all Verilog language rules
and primitives. It also explains how and when to use
different Verilog constructs. I bet you will not regret
having this book.
Regurgitation of LRM.......2001-12-21
This book is basically a regurgitation of the language reference manual and really does not give the reader any insight into when and how to use particular language constructs. For example on page 148 the author discusses module ports and has an example of a port redeclaration, but he neglects to discuss why you would wish to redeclare a port as a wire. If you are learning Verilog because you are going to use it in an actual design look elsewhere.
Well Organised.......2001-11-14
This book is well organized. All the chapters are thoroughly written and hence easily understood by a beginner.I would personally refer this book both for a beginner and a practicing engineer.

Book Description
The damage that can occur in certain fibrous raw materials or in textiles during their production and storage of textiles is expertly described in this book by Karl Mahall. In particular, he explains methods for finding concealed textile defects by using microscopic analysis.
Besides minor improvements and corrections, the new edition contains a new chapter "Poultry Feathers as Filling Material for Bedding and Textiles - Analysis of Faults." The reason for its inclusion is that natural feathers and down are not only used as a filling material for bedding but also for garments, such as anoraks, coats and sleeping bags.
This book is especially useful as a manual for both chemical and textile engineers and quality engineers. It is also a useful reference for others in the textile industry in general.

Book Description
In the 150 years since Darwin, evolutionary biology has proven as essential as it is controversial, a critical concept for answering questions about everything from the genetic code and the structure of cells to the reproduction, development, and migration of animal and plant life. But today, as David P. Mindell makes undeniably clear in The Evolving World, evolutionary biology is much more than an explanatory concept. It is indispensable to the world we live in. This book provides the first truly accessible and balanced account of how evolution has become a tool with applications that are thoroughly integrated, and deeply useful, in our everyday lives and our societies, often in ways that we do not realize.
When we domesticate wild species for agriculture or companionship; when we manage our exposure to pathogens and prevent or control epidemics; when we foster the diversity of species and safeguard the functioning of ecosystems: in each of these cases, Mindell shows us, evolutionary biology applies. It is at work when we recognize that humans represent a single evolutionary family with variant cultures but shared biological capabilities and motivations. And last but not least, we see here how evolutionary biology comes into play when we use knowledge of evolution to pursue justice within the legal system and to promote further scientific discovery through education and academic research.
More than revealing evolution's everyday uses and value, The Evolving World demonstrates the excitement inherent in its applications--and convinces us as never before that evolutionary biology has become absolutely necessary for human existence.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and informative, but strays a little.......2007-08-09
I thought the first chapter of this book, placing evolution in the context of previous scientific theories that were slow to gain acceptance against religious backlash, was very strong and very insightful. Had that chapter been expanded to book length, I would have given this book five stars.
Alas, succeeding chapters weren't as strong. I kept returning to the same question: has the author told me how the theory of evolution per se, as distinct from biological science, informs something from everyday life? Not in all cases, I had to admit.
The discussion of biology-informed forensics was extremely interesting but to the point: Mindell describes how timelines of murders can be pieced together based on entomological evidence, essentially coming down to which sorts of bugs have begun feeding and how far they've gotten. Fair enough, but couldn't such a timeline be formed just as well without reference to evolution? I believe it could.
Please don't misread me -- Darwinian evolution is the central unifying theory of biology, and no longer a matter of legitimate scientific dispute. But not every practical insight from biology touches on evolution or ultimately derives from it.
The book is clearly-written, interesting, and informative, just not always on target.
The world through the eyes of an evolutionary biologist.......2007-03-22
For anyone who has ever wondered why there is a new flu vaccine each year, why dogs and wolves look similar, or how to know if the meat you purchased at the store is from the right animal, this book will be a enlightening read. It shows how evolutionary thinking is a powerful way to understand and integrate much of what we can observe. Mindell finds interesting (sometimes spellbinding) examples from throughout science, medicine, history and daily life that illustrate how evolution is useful and what the study of evolution really is about. It is both an interesting read and a great introduction to modern evolutionary biology. While some areas are understandably a bit dry (e.g. a thorough accounting of historical changes in church doctrine regarding science), this is made up for by an abundance of riveting accounts -- like the use of phylogenetics in the trial of a gastroenterologist accused of injecting HIV into a nurse with whom he was having an affair -- a case in which Mindell served as an expert witness.
tries, but fails.......2006-09-13
It's strange how comparable religion and evolution really are. For example, in religion, no one (at least in modern times) has seen God. Yet, in general, the belief in God, generally called religion, has its basis in the fairly rational belief that God exists. In the same way, evolutionists claim that all life evolved from one cell. There is no real scientific proof of that ever occurring, this is in the same way there's no real science showing God exists. Also, no one claims (not even young earth creationists) that change in organisms does not occur. The problem with this book is that it attempts to show how the entire, highly hypothetical theory of evolution (non life to life to cells to everything else is true), is true based on tiny changes in DNA, morphology, etc. that have no scientific or logical basis for being capable of adding up to the massive changes that evolution claims. In science, huge extrapolations don't cut it. Not only does this book not counter I.D., it adds to it because none of the 'examples' of evolution it provides are evidence of anything that could have led to macroevolutionary changes. Therefore, the only known mechanism that is capable of producing these highly complex structures is an intelligent designer. Why is there such criticism of I.D. because of it's use of philosophy, when there is also a ton of philosophy used in macroevolutionary theory (true macroevolution has never been observed). The very fact science is considered to be more valid over religion is, in itself, a philosophy - especially when dealing with (possible)unobserved historical events. That's no different than saying God created life. Think about it.
A Great Counter to ID and Creationism!.......2006-07-31
Of the many flaws in Intelligent Design, or its earlier version Creationism, one that stands out prominently is that all of us (including those who dismiss evolution) use the results of evolutionary biology every day. From the pets and domestic livestock we raise, through our garden and crop plants, innovations in public health and our understanding of ecology, we utilize evolutionary principles. Indeed, biological sciences could not function well without them. Removing evolution from biology is like the attempt to remove Mendelian genetics from biology in the Soviet Union under Stalin.
David P. Mindall's new book "The Evolving World: Evolution in Everyday Life" is a great antidote to the creationist jag we are current undergoing. Many will undoubtedly ignore it, as they have other very articulate written explanations of evolution, but I would hope that a large number of the non-committed will read it. Otherwise it will be preaching to the choir to some extent. Still I learned some interesting things while reading it even though I am a professional biologist. New and previously known discoveries on the origin of the dog, horse, cow, cabbage, etc. are well described (I do wish he would have included Indian corn, but you can't have everything!) Disease organisms and their evolutionary significance are presented, including the very evolutionary development of resistance to drugs used against them. Mindell then goes on to evolution and ecosystems, biodiversity, bioprospecting, forensics, and finally its significance to world religions and current culture.
Read this book - it just might help you make informed decisions about modern science, especially biology.
Evolving understanding.......2006-05-24
This book provides a much-needed calm and thoughtful survey of the ways in which evolution impacts our everyday lives. It is not meant to be a weapon in the culture wars, but rather is just a sane perspective that is full of interesting and original thoughts. It would make a terrific introduction to evolutionary biology for a non-scientist freshman seminar, precisely because it is neither preachy nor vitriolic.

Book Description
Roz is a woman of independent means who thinks love is all in the past-but she's about to be taken by surprise.
Number-one bestselling author Nora Roberts presents the second novel of her In the Garden trilogy, as three women discover the secrets from the past contained within their historic home.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good.......2007-08-06
Another of Nora's books that grabs you within the first 10 pages, but this book is a little slower than the Blue Dahlia.
Trilogy.......2007-07-19
This was a very good trilogy. It will keep you interested to the last page!
fantastic.......2007-04-12
All three books in the trilogy will go on my keeper shelf forever. I love books that are connected through women who become close friends.
Saving Graces is another favorite of mine, although there all three heroines get their stories within one book. The Saving Graces: A Novel
And I just started a new 4 book mini series that feature 4 women who are thrown together in adversity and end up friends as they fight for their lives. Secret Contract (Harlequin Intrigue Series)
The best of Nora Roberts.......2007-02-15
This is my favorite Nora Roberts book. I am an avid gardener, so the setting of the garden center, and details of the business was an added bonus. The characters in all her books seem real, but never more than in the In The Garden series. I love the balance of personalities, and their wonderful interaction. I felt as if I knew these people! When I started reading Black Rose it was like visiting old friends. Black Rose is my favorite, I think, because it is centered on Roz. She is such a strong woman, but does not let her strength take away from her warmth and femininity. I usually pass on my paperbacks to the library, but will not give away the In The Garden series. I have read them several times and enjoyed them each time!
Great read.......2007-02-09
Nora Roberts has done it again. The way she brings characters to life is enchanting. I loved reading this part of the trilogy and following the lives of the women involved. I especially loved the plot line of the Harper Bride. Needless to say, the gardens were an intricate part of this book and their descriptions were just lovely.
