Competition, Efficiency and Welfare contains a collection of papers in honor of Manfred Neumann. This collection was prepared as a tribute to a teacher and scholar, whose accomplishments have enriched various fields of economics. The magnitude of his interests is reflected in the breadth of topics covered in this volume: industrial economics, competition policy and related topics. However, if one unifying principle runs through Manfred Neumann's work, it is the belief in the power of competition. Born on May 16, 1933, Manfred Neumann studied economics at the University of Cologne. He graduated in 1960. In 1969 Manfred Neumann was appointed Professor of Economics at Nürnberg University. He was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, President of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) and Chairman of Industrial Organization Study Group of the Verein für Sozialpolitik. Most of his professional career has been spent at Nürnberg, where he has helped to make the Economic Institute one of the leading research centers in Industrial Organization. He has also been involved in various advisory activities. The volume contains 18 essays. The first twelve are grouped into four categories: Innovation and R&D (Part I), Cartels (Part II), Mergers and Merger Policy (Part III), and Methodological Issues in Industrial Organization (Part IV). These papers fall within the bounds of industrial economics, which has been Manfred Neumann's primary research interest throughout his career. Part V includes two papers on theories of international trade, which has been a recurring topic of interest for Manfred Neumann through the years. The last three papers look at broader policy and macroeconomic issues. Contributors to this volume include Karl Aiginger, David B. Audretsch, Paul A. Geroski, Stephen Martin and Dennis Mueller.

Excellent gem of a book.......2003-08-01

This book has been around for a while. I didn't know it existed until I had to deal with some people problems at my job and lacking anyone who could really help me, a colleague recommended that I purchase a copy of "Rightful Termination: Avoiding Litigation".

As a manager who had to deal with some pretty tough personnel issues at work, this book really helped me get through the rough spots. I just followed the steps outlined by the authors. The book was easy to read and understand without dumbing down the subject matter. I recommend this book as good reading for anyone who has people reporting to them

Varied essays; Some good, some dull and PC.......2004-05-08

Some chapters are better than others. Several are good but many are written like the required reading for one of those required "diversity" courses in college. Those essays (about half the book) don't get into any practical information about law school, but instead focus on things like feminism, race, sexual orientation and how that relates to law, learning, or the typical student experience. Other chapters have interesting information and have good insight about subjects taught (Torts, Civil Procedure, etc.).

A big-picture view of law school.......2004-02-14

In preparing for law school, any student should try to get a little extra information to help him or her make the transition to law school and succeed. Many books offer tips and tricks for taking notes, making outlines, and networking. This book, however, offers a bit more background on the course of study.

The book contains individual essays from different teachers explain not what you should do, but why should do it. For instance, one essay discusses gays and lesbians going to law school. The essay mentions joining a society or group to help deal with the stress. Being in law school already has its intense stress, so joining a club will allow some relaxation with others who share your background.

The essay went on to discuss whether mentioning sexual preference is necessary or recommended. Even for a non-gay or non-lesbian, this essay was really interesting. The author has opened up my ideas to the kinds of issues any fellow students may be going through.

If you only get one book, this probably won't be the one to get. However, I have to recommend this book highly. I feel that I have a bigger overall picture what I would be getting into.

A great resource!.......1998-08-27

As a future law student, this book was an invaluable resource. I feel much more prepared for entering law school, and know what to expect from my classes. Also, it has great info on financing and issues facing women, minorities, etc. The authors of the chapters seem to be very knowlegeable and qualified. I recommend it to everyone planning to go to law school.

This book is a perfect presentation about gravitational lensing.
It is complete and pedagogical description. The authors go into detail but without loosing the non-experts that are trying to understand these effects and processes. I strongly recommend it.

The chimpanzees are the closest living evolutionary relatives to our own species, Homo sapiens. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: What an amazing book!.......2007-10-10

My favorite book in my 2 year book club. I love the way she writes and describes a world and lives of strong women who have no choice, no love, no life but yet have each other, dreams, and and hope.

It makes me want to burn my bra!.......2007-10-09

I thought this book was very well written and the story was very interesting. However, it doesn't change the fact that it infuriated me to no end. I am so thankful I am an American woman, even a Western woman, where women are valued and important to society. It makes me sick to think how little value women have and that they see themselves that way, no better than a slave. And then whent these young girls move into their new home, their mother-in-laws treat them so abominably, even though they had gone through the same things. Women become subservient in every possible way, mentally, emotionally, and of course, physically because of that accursed foot-binding tradition. YUCK! This type of culture is just so alien to me. Wow! What a great story, though. It really got me thinking.

A Beautiful Story!.......2007-10-08

This book was effectively able to intertwine a story about lifelong friendship between two women and many historical details from Chinese culture such as food binding and the role of women in society. I loved how the author was able to look back on her life and point out her flaws, and the strengths of her friend. I highly recommend this book!

This book will make you both sad and happy and both love and hate the characters at the same time. Very interesting to learn about chinese traditions of arranged marriage and wrapped feet. I couldn't put it down.

Book Club selection - Wonderful and rich.......2007-10-06

I was put off by this book being another narrative. It seems like that's all I've read in the last few weeks. But it was a wonderful story, so intricate and filled with rich details. I saw some critisim about the lack of details abut the rest of their lives, like how they gave birth. but that kind of detail is not needed here. The lives of these women are so very interesting to me. I really liked this book. it had a valuable lesson at the end as well. Ok and the footbinding was awful but integral to the story.
