The authors' three big bangs are 1) THE Big Bang thought to have given birth to the known universe, 2) the later explosions of supernovas which produced the heavy elements not originally present in the early universe, which was dominated by the light elements hydrogen and helium, and 3) the crash of a comet or asteroid near the Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago, which destroyed the dinosaurs and gave fresh opportunities to mammals and, eventually, to us humans. For the authors, these diverse events are linked because they have each played an enormous role in determining the nature of the world we now live in. These three big bangs give us a strong sense of physical evolution, comparable to the modern view of biological evolution. This is a new perception. When I was a child in the 1940's I read everything about popular astronomy I could get my hands on. The view I got at the time was of a completely static universe, in which nothing much ever happened. The universe was magnificent and awesome but certainly not dynamic. Now the universe is a place of explosive evolution and is vastly more magnificent and awesome. "The Three Big Bangs" tells this story well. This is a book that openly panders to our fascination with violence, but in a way that is socially acceptable!

This volume contains selected presentations of the 3rd International PAMIR Conference on Transfer Phenomena in Magnetohydrodynamic and Electroconducting Flows held at the Paul Langevin Centre, Aussois, France, 26-30 September 1997. The main scientific domain of the conference was the interaction between a magnetic field and a conducting fluid, which can be either an electrolyte (with low electrical conductivity) or a liquid metal (with high electrical conductivity). One of the perspectives of the conference was to facilitate the interaction between the MHD and chemical engineering communities. Thus, the connection between mass transfer in electrochemical systems and magnetic fields (sometimes called magnetoelectrolysis) was introduced for the first time as a topic of the conference. This offered a new class of problems to the MHD community. The presentations focused on four main topics related to interfacial heat and mass transfer phenomena, energetic applications, the dynamo effect and MEHD phenomena, and they encompassed both numerical and experimental studies. The invited lectures were devoted to different subjects, such as the dynamo effect, magnetoelectrolysis, instability problems, and metallurgical applications of MHD. The state of the art was discussed together with promising new orientations. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced graduate students in physics and engineering sciences, working in MHD and related areas.

A saga of drama.......2007-09-14

"The Coldest Winter Ever" is undoubtedly the most popular urban book released in the past decade (1997-2007). Almost every young woman I know has purposely exposed herself to this classic. Why, though, is this book so beloved among young women? Well, primarily because this book gets down into the nitty-gritty. In great detail, Sister Souljah delves into the life of her fictional character, Winter. Winter is very cold-hearted, and she had been through a struggle, but it is obvious that she carried an acrimonious attitude because of that.

Winter Santiaga, although a typical hoodrat, was accustomed to the finer material things in life; her father, Ricky, was a successful drug dealer and ensured that his family lived above average. If you weren't on Winter's level as far as possessing expensive clothes and nice hairstyles, you were below her in her book. Once her father is caught and sent to jail, Winter's sisters move in with her father's best friend, Midnight, and Winter is sent to a group home to fend for herself. While there, Winter does nail and hair in effort to keep money in her pockets.

There isn't much character growth in Winter, and maybe that's what attracts so many people to this book. Often times in reality, people never grow up. She remains selfish, cold-hearted and stuck up until the end of the book. It was a great read, something I found very difficult to put down. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of urban literature. I'm pretty sure you will at least partly enjoy this read. Like most young women, it's one of my personal favorites.
