              Book Description

Managing Marginal or Incompetent Staff: A Practical Guide explains how to deal with underperforming or incompetent staff and provides detailed memos, forms, procedures, and examples that are consistent with due process and just cause. Written by Dr. Jo Campbell who has a PhD from Columbia University and almost thirty years of administrative experience in education, this book is especially important for administrators, principals, and superintendents in public service organizations. The book has two parts. In the first part, principles of performance evaluation, due process and just cause, and supervision and communication are discussed. In the second part, a comprehensive case study example is provided that shows details of procedures, forms, memos, actions and documents that the administrator should use. This book has outstanding professional reviews and is highly recommended. Dr. Mel Coleman of NOVA Southeastern University states that it is "must reading for anyone who is in a supervisory role." Connie Podesta, M.S., LPC, CSP, recommends this guide as "essential reading to every manager and administrator." Kim Kazmierczak, Principal, writes "As a veteran principal I found this book to be extremely beneficial in supervising certified staff." Doreen Knuth, Elementary Principal, writes "As a new administrator I found Jo Campbell's book invaluable." Dr. Bill Rauhauser, President School Improvement Partners, writes "It is a guide that any one could follow to help with one of the most difficult challenges any administrator faces. I highly recommend it." Although this book is especially relevant for public service administrators, principals, and superintendents, it is also valued by managers and administrators in private industry as well.

Don't let the large size and lush graphics fool you--One Universe is no coffee-table book. This grand tour explores the staggering vastness of space and the incomprehensibly tiny pieces that fit together to make our bodies, our planet, comets, and cosmic rays. Astrophysicists Neil de Grasse Tyson and Charles Liu of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and science journalist Robert Irion have teamed up to put a planetarium in a book, and while you'll have to provide your own choral background music, the images are sharp and beautiful and the accompanying text is clear and engaging. The authors clearly love their subject and their work and even the most casual reader will find the book as inescapable as a black hole.

See supernovae, eclipses, and the end of the universe in all its quiet glory--but just as your eyes are drawn to the pretty pictures, your mind will seek out the explanations and elaborations accompanying them. Tyson is well known as the director of the Hayden Planetarium and has a brilliant knack for exciting people about astronomy without condescending or diluting; in fact, his respect for the public's intelligence is one of the best features of One Universe. Whether you want to get the latest on time and space, inspire students, or (dare we say it) show off your coffee table, this is well worth checking out. --Rob Lightner

                Book Description

Physically and intellectually, the celestial bodies that move about the universe seem unreachable to us from our Earth-bound vantage. But recent discoveries in astronomy and physics reveal that the principles that govern our everyday life and the workings of the cosmos are one and the same.

In ONE UNIVERSE: At Home in the Cosmos, Neil de Grasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, Charles Liu, an astrophysicist at the Museum, and Robert Irion, a contributing editor and correspondent to Astronomy and Science, make it clear that what happens in our kitchens and backyards are simply variations on cosmic processes.

In straightforward language and everyday analogies, the authors take us on a journey through the universe, from the infinitesimal to the infinite, stopping along the way to explain these grand and simple connections. We come to see that the force of gravity that finally lands a home-run ball in the bleachers keeps the moon in orbit. Or that the crystal in the window that breaks light into sparkling colors is just another version of the crystal scientists use to understand light from galaxies billions of miles from Earth.

Three basic concepts--motion, matter, and energy--lie at the heart of our understanding of the universe. With these three principles in mind, we can expand our knowledge of the universe because we can see how the physics of our world mirror the same physics of our universe. No wall separates the Earth from the rest of the universe. To illustrate the elegance of this concept, ONE UNIVERSE draws on a glorious album of space photographs, some seen here for the first time, and diagrams and illustrations drawn especially for the book. The book is being published in conjunction with the opening of the new $200 million Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History. The centerpiece of the Rose Center is the new Hayden Planetarium, the first 21st-century planetarium.

This 224-page book includes an illustrated timeline of the major advances in astronomy and astrophysics, a glossary, 400 illustrations, full color throughout, and an index.

                5 out of 5 stars Informative Book.......2007-03-23

This book is not for amature astronomers. The explainations require some previous knowledge. The information is very acurate and in depth. The pictures are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Our Universe-At Home in the Cosmos by Tyson, Liu, Irion et........2003-08-23

This work would make a wonderful gift for a student in
grammar school or early high school. It has a thorough
explanation of the color band, motion and energy.
Major Newtonian laws are explained and demonstrated. The author
demonstrates comparative orbital forms; such as, the arch,
ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. He explains how changes
in matter are a function of temperature, pressure and density
factors. The work concludes with some important theories of
an expansive universe. The book is challenging-intellectually.
The science is firmly grounded in classic theories of
Sir Isaac Newton and a host of other important mathematicians
                and physicists.

                4 out of 5 stars A non-mathematical introduction to the Universe.......2002-11-20

Now that science fact has become stranger than science fiction, it's good to have a book that explains the physical universe in clear prose and pictures. The authors' stated intention is to make readers feel "at home in the Cosmos," although many of the astronomical photographs might leave us a bit in awe of the place where we live. In fact, I'm surprised that the authors didn't use more images from the Hubble space telescope. Perhaps it is because their stated intention is to explain, not simply astound. Conceptual drawings such as "How protons decay" are also found in abundance.

Tyson, Liu, and Irion introduce readers to 'the' golden age of astronomy (Right here. Right now) and explain the principles that govern our everyday lives, as well as the workings of the cosmos. That's quite a lot to accomplish in a book that is also a visual feast (400 full-color illustrations). However, the authors are well-suited to tackle the job. Neil de Grasse Tyson is the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. Charles Liu is an astrophysicist at the Museum. Robert Irion is a free-lance journalist, and a contributing editor and correspondent to Astronomy and Science.

Using everyday analogies (as opposed to mathematical formulae), the authors take us on a journey through our universe, from the infinitesimal to the infinite. Here is an example illustrating Newton's second law of motion:

"Imagine standing behind two people wearing roller skates. One is a 90-pound ballerina, and the other is a sumo wrestler who weighs five times as much. If you push on each person with equal force (and tact), you will accelerate the ballerina five times more quickly. That ratio holds true in space as well."

"One Universe" includes an illustrated timeline of the major advances in astronomy and physics, from Democritus to Hale-Bopp.

5 out of 5 stars Grand Tour of the Universe.......2000-05-09

Want to know what a supernova, neutron star or black hole is, explained in everyday language? If so then this is the book you are looking for. Simply put, it's the perfect source for easy to understand explanations about all facets of astronomy and astrophysics. Find out how astronomers know the universe is expanding, how they determine how far away other galaxies are, or how a supernova happens. Learn about energy and particle physics, all explained in an intelligent yet easy to understand fashion. Learn about the different states of matter, about energy and Einsteins theory of relativity. Nicely formatted with stunning graphics, I highly recommend this book, especially to those with no background in the sciences who are looking for a simple, easy to understand yet intelligent explanation of science.

5 out of 5 stars A book that should be in every home.......2000-03-03

The beauty of this book is apparent as soon as you open it. It is filled with wonderful pictures that help to explain the valuable information that is contained in this book. Neil De Grasse Tyson has taken the information that most of us find to difficult to understand and brought it to a level that makes it not only understandable, but exciting to read. The pictures give us a visual understanding of the dynamics of all the things around us. This is a book for all, young and old. I especially found it to be a great way to stimulate the minds of our youth, who seem to have lost interest in many of the sciences. This book breathes new life into a subject that affects all of us.

The tradition of the cozy English children's mystery, so sweetly portrayed in classics like Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce and Mandy by Julie Andrews, has been revived in Charmian Hussey's exquisitely wrought The Valley of Secrets. Stephen Lansbury never knew his parents. So the orphan is stunned to receive a letter informing him he has inherited a large estate in the English countryside from his long lost great-uncle Theodore. Upon his arrival to Lansbury Hall, two things immediately strike Stephen: the exotic plant life that seems to bloom everywhere, and the meticulous upkeep of the old manor. When Stephen finds the water-stained journals of his uncle's youthful travels up the Amazon River, the unusual greenery suddenly makes sense. But who (or what!) is maintaining the tidy kitchen garden and replenishing his woodbox? As Stephen pores over his uncle's journals, his curiosity and apprehension grow. Are plants the only thing Uncle Theodore brought back from the rain forest all those years ago?

Charmian Hussey has given the stale orphan premise a clever 21st century twist by inserting loads of facts and figures about the devastating deforestation of the Amazon into her old-fashioned tale. There is even a list of mentioned flora and fauna included for aspiring young naturalists, who will no doubt be charmed by Stephen's surprising "discovery" of a whole new species. For more mystery melded with Amazon lore, follow up The Valley of Secrets with Eva Ibbotson's equally wonderful Journey to the River Sea. --Jennifer Hubert

                    Book Description

Stephen Lansbury is an orphan. He thinks he has no relatives at all -- until the day a letter arrives telling him that a distant uncle is dead. Suddenly Stephen finds himself the only heir to a great estate in the countryside. So Stephen sets off to claim his inheritance...but when he arrives, there is nothing to greet him at Lansbury Hall but a mystery.

The puzzle is as tangled as the vines on the hall's front gate, but two things are clear: Stephen's uncle kept to himself, and none of the townspeople know he's dead. But why then does Stephen feel that something or someone is in the house? Curious tracks glisten through the kitchen table dust, food in the pantry keeps switching places, and Stephen swears he saw a dark figure lurking outside in the dense woods. To escape the slightly creepy feeling that someone is around, Stephen starts to read his great-uncle's diary. And as he learns about his great-uncle's journey through the Amazon jungle nearly seventy-five years before, a fantastic truth unfolds. Soon Stephen is sure: While the mystery of Lansbury Hall is stranger than he could have imagined, it's not nearly as incredible as the reality....

Handsomely designed and beautifully illustrated, this intriguing yarn is a book to curl up with. Written in the style of a timeless classic, The Valley of Secrets is a book that returns readers to the art of true storytelling.

I really liked this book because it is suspenseful, captivating, and mysterious. I would put it in a category with A Wrinkle in Time and Harry Potter. I'm almost ten years old, I read a lot and this is one of my favorite books.

I always take a new book to read aloud together with my 8-year-old grandson when we visit. This one was a big success. He declared this book the best he had ever read.
I chose this for our holiday because I thought it would appeal to his keen interest in nature and the environment, and because the protagonist was a boy not much older than he is. I liked that the language was not "dumbed down", but written clearly enough to be accessible. We took turns reading and he had no trouble getting through it, although a few British terms ("torch" for "flashlight, for example) needed clarification. There were enough surprises and mysteries to keep the 5-year-old and the adults engaged as well.
The only problem was that the holiday ended before we finished the book. I may have to get a copy of my own to find out what happens.

I really wanted to like this book. And to give it credit, it tried very hard to be a well-written book. It just didn't do a very good job of it.

It starts off okay. The chapters are short, which may be good for reluctant readers (we all know how good it feels to read ten chapters, even if those chapters are two pages long). For the first ten chapters or so, the book really isn't TOO bad. The author introduces you to various characters and creatures; sets up background and mystery; and . . . that's about it. It's far too long, and the book would have done well to have been edited. I strongly agree with some of the other readers; it's a long read that takes you nowhere. The plot is not substantial, the characters underdeveloped. My friend and I were reading this at the same time, and we FORCED ourselves to finish the book, simply because we don't like starting books and not finishing them (although I was willing to make this an exception).

The Valley of Secrets has such wonderful potential. The author DOES write very prettily (try reading it out loud; very lyrical), and I think that if she were better focused with her plot, this could have been an extraordinary book.

Unless they stop making children's books, say, tomorrow, I wouldn't recommend this to any child. You might as well give them Joyce's Portrait of an Artist. (They'd probably enjoy it more.)

                    3 out of 5 stars It's o.k..........2007-02-03

It's full of details...I like to read it if I can't sleep. I love it because I get to use my imagination. Slow...but relaxing...

1 out of 5 stars Slow and painful.......2007-02-01

Charmian has great intentions but this book really never takes off and bogs down in such flowery prose as it is almost unreadable. The story is very shallow and the characters so totally unbelievable it is hard to imagine anyone actually writing this drivel. Chapters drone on and on with nothing actually happening. My 11 year old and I read it together and somehow managed to get through all 78 chapters. I am still wondering how she made this simple story last 300 pages when any other autor could have told this story in 75. Avoid unless you are an incredibly patient reader or a glutton for punishment.

                                  Book Description

Inheritance has been used in AI knowledge representation for many years. Until recently, however, it had not been much exploited in linguistic representation. This collection describes how the lexicon may be structured using inheritance. The papers are mostly formal in orientation, mainly concentrating on unification-based systems (which nowadays form the basis for most theoretically motivated work on NLP, and for current linguistic theories such as HPSG) and discuss syntax and morphology as well as lexical semantics. The formalization of default inheritance, in particular, is discussed in detail, and linked with the AI literature.

Christmas 2000: a blissful time when Y2K mania was gleefully recalled as farcical overreaction, and Yankee fans everywhere were still reveling in the aftermath of the Subway Series. On the surface, there's little reason for native New Yorker Jim Carrelli, now a left-coaster, to be so miserable. But he has dragged a lot of baggage into the new millennium, and it's weighing on him as heavily as Jacob Marley's chain. Feeling no pain during an outing to his favorite watering hole, Jim spills his guts, revealing the source of his mounting misanthropy to his neighbor Galen, a loquacious mysterious older gentleman with unusual taste in automobiles and haberdashery. Digging past Jim's selfishness and Long Island parochialism to discover a good heart underneath, Galen makes him an offer of a lifetime. Brimming with nostalgic humor and sharp cultural commentary, 1225 Mistletoe Lane adds a contemporary twist to a hallowed holiday theme and reaffirms the Dickensian notion that we are all just "fellow passengers to the grave."

I read 1225 Mistletoe Lane and thought it was a wonderful book. I smiled a lot, laughed out loud and gave out audible "sigh's" It's great reading for the holiday or anytime actually.

I read it twice and would love to see it made into a movie. It was easy to visualize the characters and get attached to them.

I had it out on my coffee table for the holidays and my guests would pick it up, read a couple of chapters and become instantly interested in it. The picture is so cute it draws you to pick up the book and once you start reading you don't want to put it down. Great for yourself or a gift for someone.

This plot has a new twist. It's a love your neighbor kind of story. Jim, who has never really had strong feelings for anyone, has a chance to find out, once he steps back in time to 1963. Now, Jim doesn't believe in time travel. But when his neighbor, Galan, has a talk with him, and explains that, if he could go back in time in order to help someone, would he take the challenge?

After Jim thinks it over, he finally agrees with Galan, but he still thinks that time travel is impossible. Once the question was answered, Galan gave Jim a pill and told him to take it. Jim, thinking the pill is a breath mint, takes it. Once Galan goes back inside, and while Jim is still sitting on the bench, he suddenly loses consciousness.

Later when Jim wakes up and begins to look at things around him, he notices that everything is different. The scenery, the way people are dressed. But he still doesn't think he has gone back in time, until he sees someone who looks vaguely familiar.

Once Jim understands what is taking place, will he want to help the neighbor? Or will he only think of himself, and try to change time while he is in 1963? Will this sudden change cause more problems to pile up for Jim? You, the reader, will have a chance to find out, after you read "1225 Mistletoe Lane" and step back to 1963 with Jim Carrelli. Toward the closing of the story, the reader may get a surprise.

The author, through an outstanding knowledge of the 1950's and 1960's, has brought life to these unique characters.

Jim Carrelli is a thirty-something bachelor who has no wife or girlfriend, no life to speak of, and no prospects for attaining the "American Dream." He bemoans his unhappiness to a quirky old, but mysterious neighbor named Galen, and then the fun begins. Jim's life changes drastically as it takes a magical twist that leads to numerous surprises and an ending befitting the fuzzy-warm feeling that the holidays offer.

If you enjoyed the classic film "It's A Wonderful Life," you'll certainly take pleasure in reading 1225 Mistletoe Lane by Lenny Castellaneta. His writing style brings the book's characters to life and contains a myriad of analogies pertaining to people that have been famous on television or film. So if you are a TV or movie aficionado, you'll truly fancy this story even more.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful, feel good read!.......2005-11-29

1225 Mistletoe Lane is the second book by a first-time author that I've picked up--and didn't put down until the last page.

This is a well-woven tale of grace, forgiveness and change, of being distrustful and guarded, and finally, about giving to others.

A school teacher in his day job, author Castellaneta introduces us to Jim (also a schoolteacher) who has no direction in his life. Once he trusted someone who took advantage of him, causing him great loss and preventing him from trusting again. One day Jim's unusual neighbor Galen made him an offer he couldn't refuse--because Galen "drugged" him with a magic potion that made Jim go back to 1963.

Why did this happen? Jim felt sorry for his ditzy landlady Molly who had been "odd" since her husband died in a car accident where she was badly injured. Galen told Jim he could go back to change the course of the accident and help Molly.

Love and friendship evolve as Jim picks up life in 1963. He is forever making references to musicians and TV shows have not heard of--yet. When he falls in love, the woman wants to know who he really is...like he could explain this adequately!

One fun thing was the people's reaction to Jim wearing a New York Yankee's warm-up jacket, all the rage in his present time, but in 1963, only the players wore those.

I'm not going to divulge anything else except the author hooked me enough to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon finding out what happened. I believe you will enjoy this story of redemption, love and serendipity. I'll be sharing this with my daughter as we need more "feel good" stories in our lives today, and this story is just that.

Armchair Interview says: This is one of the better "print-on-demand" books that I've read in a long time. The author writes a strong story line and does it with the skills one would expect of an English teacher. We can confidently recommend this book.
