Book Description
This work tells in Guidebook fashion, how successful companies are achieving "Zero" employee injury for extended periods of time. The more successful are able to reach one million workhours and more with "Zero" OSHA Recordable injuries. This success is reached using research based safety management strategies from the construction industry that apply to employers in any business or industry or culture. Specific examples are presented along with a powerful results oriented, continuous improvement safety management process that is essential for the long term. Savings go direct to the bottom line and are more significant than most executives can imagine. What is safety excellence? Can it be defined? A good definition of safety excellence is this. "A company or group of employees have reached safety excellence when all 'at-risk behavior' has been eliminated." In contrast, however, repeatedly the definition of "safety excellence" commonly found in business and industry is as varied as there are companies. Too often leaders accept mediocrity (always un-intentioned) as their definition of safety excellence. Why settle for the average? Why don't we measure our performance against the best: those with no injuries? Here, the key questions should be, "Who are they, and how do they accomplish such performance?" This books tells all and the answer is simply that employee safety is a people management issue. While the hazards presented in various industries are different, the people are the same. Copy what these in construction are doing in managing safety with their people and you, too, can achieve Zero Injury. .

Book Description
This book by one of the leaders in adaptive optics covers the fundamental theory and then describes in detail how this technology can be applied to large ground-based telescopes to compensate for the effects of atmospheric turbulence. It includes information on basic adaptive optics components and technology, and has chapters devoted to atmospheric turbulence, optical image structure, laser beacons, and overall system design. The chapter on system design is particularly detailed and includes performance estimation and optimization. Combining a clear discussion of physical principles with numerous real-world examples, this book will be a valuable resource for all graduate students and researchers in astronomy and optics.
Customer Reviews:
The book is a must for readers interested in adaptive optics.......2000-06-25
The book does an excellent job of describing the basic principles and the practice of adaptive optics for astronomical applications. The author was a pioneer in adaptive optics and in the 1970s he built the first system capable of compensating a large astronomical telescope at visible wavelengths. The book gives a good history of adaptive optics including an excellent bibliography. Wavefront sensors, correctors, laser beacons, and wavefront reconstruction and control systems are described. Current adaptive optics programs are described and future prospects are discussed. I had the good fortune of working with the author at the time the first adaptive optics system was built and the author conveys in this book the excitement we felt about adaptive optics at that time. While the book is very specialized and technical, and the number of readers who will enjoy the book is limited, if you are interested in adaptive optics the reading of this book is a must.

Book Description
Over the last decade many efforts have been made to develop high angular resolution techniques in astrophysics. Combined with imaging facilities, they have rapidly proved their efficiency and have already led to major astrophysical results.
During the decade to come, astronomers will be offered new, even more sophisticated high angular resolution tools, especially in the IR and optical domains, coupled with much bigger telescopes, either on the ground or in space.
In such a context of rapidly evolving techniques and a growing need for higher angular resolution to test theories or discover new objects, the present book reviews both instrumental and scientific aspects. The main questions addressed are: what kind of science will benefit from high angular resolution techniques? How can they best be used?
Audience: The book is accessible to students and research workers in both instrumental and astrophysical aspects.

Darwin said it first, but Huxley said it best. Known as "Darwin's bulldog" for his tenacious and successful defense of evolution by natural selection, biologist T.H. Huxley wrote Man's Place in Nature to bolster his case with hard facts. This new edition, edited and introduced by eminent paleontologist and evolutionary theorist Stephen Jay Gould, reminds the readers of the power of good writing to influence opinion. Huxley's style is charmingly persuasive, even when he's describing the intimate details of the lemur's skull. The illustrations range from crude to beautifully detailed and generally take a back seat to the prose. Those involved in debates with creationists--150 years after Darwin--will be discouraged to learn that Huxley faced many of the same arguments in his day. Still, armed with Man's Place in Nature, another generation can fight and win. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Thomas H. Huxley was one of the first supporters of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, and he did more than any other writer to advance its acceptance among scientists and nonscientists alike. His most famous book,
Man’s Place in Nature, published only five years after Darwin’s
The Origin of Species, offers a compelling review of primate and human paleontology, and is the first attempt to apply Darwin’s theory to human beings. As compelling a piece of analysis now as it was 140 years ago,
Man’s Place in Nature is a must for every science lover’s library.
Customer Reviews:
Our place indeed, no matter what our ego says.......2004-07-13
Huxley surely was the best evolution defender of his time, even superior to Darwin and Wallace at this feat. This book is a classic to man's evolution literature and should be read by anyone interested in the early foundations of evolution. This were the kind of lectures and essays that destroy competing arguments from other theories. Something that strikes me is how updated this still is (well considering the time that has passed), and how strong are Huxley's arguments and so well founded. Huxley uses various techniques to make his point, he uses a lot of the new branch of science "comparative anatomy", and does so like an expert. Simply a delightful reading, a time travel to the origins of the evolution theory.

Book Description
Structure of Matter, Structure of Mind provides a complete, clear, unified theory of the foundations of mathematics, language, and the human mind. Mind in the human sense is no longer distinguished by a few chance details of zoological classification, but, like physics, is based directly in first principles. Because sentences share all functional mechanisms with equations - a main verb, linguistic deep-structure, recursion, discreteness, linear delivery, truth and falsity -- language shares a common source with arithmetic and algebra.
Because truth or falsity of equations depends on their symmetry about the "equals", equations are self-regulating, not arbitrary, and reflect the founding properties of matter. Sentences of ordinary language are formed from equations by the turning of a single key -- that of symmetry - unlocking the human mind into the fascinating non-Euclidean world of 21st century physics and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2006-04-09
This is not only a complete, clear, unified theory of the foundations of mathmatics, language, and the human mind, but a thrilling, facinating, and entertaining read. I cannot remember the last time I took this much pleasure in reading a textbook. I am not a scientist, just a person interested in what it is to be human. This incredible example of original and disciplined thinking leads the reader step by step to a view of the human mind as unique in the known universe, not simply a step on an evolutionary path, but unprecidented in its creative abilities. This is a gift that will keep giving for anyone interested in language, mathmatics or the human mind.
A Must-Read about the Human Mind!.......2006-02-11
Hold on to your hats: this may be one of the deepest, freshest, and most important books on thought and the human mind ever written.
With a completely unjaundiced view, Dr. Abler takes you by the hand on a journey to explore the origins of mathematics and language in the human mind. Using 1st principles and the Socratic method, Dr. Abler irresistibly comes to the conclusion that both can NOT be the results of evolution. This pretty much negates the entire fields of evolutionary psychology and evolutionary linguistics.
The book does not, by the way, criticize biological evolution or natural selection. Dr. Abler is also apparently a well-known paleontologist, and so is a rigorous hard-scientist well-versed and comfortable with evolutionary theory. He "only" and devastatingly takes issue with the assumption that evolution caused the existence of language and math in the human mind.
If you are at all interested in how we think, you must read this book.

Bad things come in threes for Toru Okada. He loses his job, his cat disappears, and then his wife fails to return from work. His search for his wife (and his cat) introduces him to a bizarre collection of characters, including two psychic sisters, a possibly unbalanced teenager, an old soldier who witnessed the massacres on the Chinese mainland at the beginning of the Second World War, and a very shady politician.
Haruki Murakami is a master of subtly disturbing prose. Mundane events throb with menace, while the bizarre is accepted without comment. Meaning always seems to be just out of reach, for the reader as well as for the characters, yet one is drawn inexorably into a mystery that may have no solution. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is an extended meditation on themes that appear throughout Murakami's earlier work. The tropes of popular culture, movies, music, detective stories, combine to create a work that explores both the surface and the hidden depths of Japanese society at the end of the 20th century.
If it were possible to isolate one theme in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, that theme would be responsibility. The atrocities committed by the Japanese army in China keep rising to the surface like a repressed memory, and Toru Okada himself is compelled by events to take responsibility for his actions and struggle with his essentially passive nature. If Toru is supposed to be a Japanese Everyman, steeped as he is in Western popular culture and ignorant of the secret history of his own nation, this novel paints a bleak picture. Like the winding up of the titular bird, Murakami slowly twists the gossamer threads of his story into something of considerable weight. --Simon Leake
Book Description
Japan's most highly regarded novelist now vaults into the first ranks of international fiction writers with this heroically imaginative novel, which is at once a detective story, an account of a disintegrating marriage, and an excavation of the buried secrets of World War II.
In a Tokyo suburb a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife's missing cat. Soon he finds himself looking for his wife as well in a netherworld that lies beneath the placid surface of Tokyo. As these searches intersect, Okada encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists: a psychic prostitute; a malevolent yet mediagenic politician; a cheerfully morbid sixteen-year-old-girl; and an aging war veteran who has been permanently changed by the hideous things he witnessed during Japan's forgotten campaign in Manchuria.
Gripping, prophetic, suffused with comedy and menace,
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a tour de force equal in scope to the masterpieces of Mishima and Pynchon.
Customer Reviews:
adult fairy tale.......2007-09-02
I liked this book because its covers several stories, some obviously intertwined, some not. Particularly fascinating are the sections dealing with the War in Manuchuria. They are based on facts about the Japanese incursion into Manchuria during the 1930's, but some of the details are so bizarre that they blend exquisitely with the surreal atmosphere that permeates the entire book.
you want leave it even if you hate it.......2007-08-29
Over 600 pages on emotional constipation beautifully written on any subject you could ever think of: sexual relationship between man and wife, man and fantasy, man and mental prostitute, man skin peeling a life, deep well, water, hunted houses, nasty V.I.P intellectual, empty boxes and so on.
I definitely HATED THIS BOOK but never the less coudnt let it go.
The vivid wild deranged imagination of Murakami hypnotised me totaly.
He is one wacko writer...What a genius!!
Paints a surreal world..........2007-08-26
I was teetering between four and five stars. I really wish these review sites offered fractionals, or better yet, percents. Nevertheless, this book paints an interesting and engaging world. The style and application are quite unique. I would argue there is something for just about anyone here: comedy, suspense, the supernatural, you name it. If you're not sure you want to devote yourself to 600 or so pages, pick up one of his short story collections first. I know I will most certainly read more Murakami in the future.
Excellent! .......2007-08-05
This book is a complex and multi-dimensional masterpiece. It is what best-selling fiction should be.
Looove this book.......2007-07-08
I've read most of Murakami and I think this might be my second favorite. It was his longest and I feel his most experimental. Be prepared to spend some time with it.
Without giving anything away, I like this book for its sweeping, almost Victor Hugo-like subplots and diversions, but its overall focus on one man's journey. There are unanswered questions and unfinished plotlines, but I think that's part of this book's beauty. As with other Murakami, easily accessible (though not as much as other works) and still profoundly deep (this book deals with some of Japan's imperialist past and some current problems). Overall, the best advice I can give is RFAO!

Understanding the Bird.......2003-02-01
I've read all of Murakami's fiction that has been released in english, so i am interested in anything that analyzes his fiction. This little 96 page book does quite a good job. It starts off with a short itroduction about Murakami himself. It is pretty short, and many fans would probably like to know more about Murakami, but it does help the reader to understand better from where Murakami is coming from and how his own personality is put into his characters. The second part of the book takes up many themes such as sexuality and violence. It gives the reader a higher understanding of Murakami's characters, and gives the reader an insight of what aspects that each character represents. The third part of the book is about the reception of the book in japan and in the rest of the world. This is a nice little book for a Murakami fan to read after he or she has finished reading _the wind-up bird chronicle_
a great companion piece..........2002-02-26
This series of books are not intended to be definitive guides (at under 100 pages how could they be) but are put together nicely as further reading for fans of the works they cover.
WUBC is one of my favourite books and this guide contains a great deal of interesting information and analysis on the novel. There are some fascinating quotes from Murakami himself and a number of interesting angles on the reading of the text.
It took just one train journey to read and I enjoyed it a great deal. Highly recommended for fans of Murakami.
perfect for fans.......2002-02-05
OK, I should admit straight up that I'm biased - The Wind-up Bird is my favourite novel. So I'm hardly able to give this guidebook a neutral, detached review. In fact, I'm amazed that someone has published this - are there enough of us fanatics to make this kind of thing profitable?? I hope so, as I see that Mr Strecher has another book coming out shortly! Anyhow, this is a great place to start. It was good to read about Murakami's views on other Japanese writers, his student days, and his falling into a ditch at the age of three. If you've read the novel, that explains a lot! I thought that Strecher's analysis of the novel was wonderfully accurate, although as he admits himself, he has only scratched the surface of it. Especially fascinating was the section about the reviews the novel received - astonishing how many of these missed the point. In short, if you love this novel then I think you'll like this book. And if you haven't read this novel, please go and read it. Now.
