This book deals with the strategic implications of Human Resource Management as an important strategic asset and emphasizes its importance within the overall strategy of the firm. The book covers issues such as job design, evaluation, recruitment, training, career concern, and outsourcing and downsizing. The linkage between the various pieces of HRM policy are stressed and how the policies are related to management issues such as TQM, just-in-time manufacturing, and others. The book is aimed at the general manager, not the HRM practitioner and it stresses conceptual frameworks, not procedural methodology.

Baron & Kreps write with wit & grace, pulling together a vast amount of literature to make their point that human resource management is critical to a firm's success. In every chapter, they get to the point quickly, writing for students in a way that faculty will appreciate. They retain the essence of the academic research on which their principles are based, while focusing on what it all means for managers. I highly recommend this book.

A major achievement in an underserved field.......1999-06-13

Essential reading for both general managers and human resource executives, this book breaks new ground in several ways.

First, the authors present human resources as a critical part of a SYSTEM, integrated with the company's external environment, workforce, culture, strategy and production methods, rather than as an isolated or downstream activity.

Second, they bring insights from economics, sociology and social psychology to the topic, in a powerful way. The four appendices alone (transaction cost economics, game theory, agency theory and market signaling) are worth the price of the book.

Third, they avoid the trap of "best practice", where an author looks at a few successful firms (GE? PepsiCo? 3M?) and encourages others to imitate them. In contrast, this book offers clues to creating real and inimitable competitive advantage from a company's human resource management.

The entire treatment is readable and rich in cases.

In this forcefully argued book, the leading evolutionary theorist of language draws on evidence from evolutionary biology, genetics, physical anthropology, anatomy, and neuroscience, to provide a framework for studying the evolution of human language and cognition.

Philip Lieberman argues forcibly that the widely influential theories of language's development, advanced by Chomskian linguists and cognitive scientists, especially those that postulate a single dedicated language "module," "organ," or "instinct," are inconsistent with principles and findings of evolutionary biology and neuroscience. He argues that the human neural system in its totality is the basis for the human language ability, for it requires the coordination of neural circuits that regulate motor control with memory and higher cognitive functions. Pointing out that articulate speech is a remarkably efficient means of conveying information, Lieberman also highlights the adaptive significance of the human tongue.

Fully human language involves the species-specific anatomy of speech, together with the neural capacity for thought and movement. In Lieberman's iconoclastic Darwinian view, the human language ability is the confluence of a succession of separate evolutionary developments, jury-rigged by natural selection to work together for an evolutionarily unique ability.

I cannot understand which book some of these naysayer reviewers read...I can only imagine that they got lost along the way to their refrigerators looking for bologna sandwiches and stumbled into a text wholly foreign to the brilliant book I read: SON OF A WITCH. Perhaps their attention spans have been befuddled by too much reality television, because if one got confused or bored by SON OF A WITCH then it is surely their own fault and not the author's. It's mesmerizing, it's clear, it's easy: LIIR IS THE WITCH'S SON. OK? AND SO ON. This book is a marvel and one need not have read WICKED to enjoy it thoroughly. So many parallels to the war of today are illuminated, so much delicious satire and sly dialogue, so much joy and pain and exquisite description and action in equal measure. Fly out of your own hell on a broomstick made of words, up the draft into Maguire's world of Oz. Just magnificent and compelling, every word and phrase a gem. I could stay in Oz forever, if it is this well written and intelligent and hilarious. Bravo!

Can't wait for the last installment!.......2007-09-24

Granted, this is not Wicked. But it is an excellent book, and I love where Maguire has taken this tale. I can't wait to read what must be a third book in this series - I am intrigued about the "loose ends" others mention - think of it like "empire strikes back" and you'll be okay with it!! Liir definitely does his share of whining and wandering in the desert, but the themes that echo our current politics and the revelations he makes at the end are fantastic.

"Wicked" had some odd plot points that made it difficult to read, but this book is impossible. And so depressing. I quit half-way through and threw it away.

what please was the point to this book?

Fine, I get that this kid was trying to find himself, but why was the author looking for his storyline as well? He tied up to plotlines except the elephant queen, & frankly I could care less about any of his characters. It was a wasted read. (I had not read wicked BTW, so I am not comparing here)

Random, disjointed, and totally unbelievable.......2007-07-16

I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed "Wicked", and like many was willing to enter that world again. Unfortunately, "Son of a Witch" is just poorly written. We follow a sullen, joyless boy who steadfastly insists that there is no possibility that he is interesting or talented in any way. Unfortunately, he's right.

The book is full of non sequiturs both emotionally and in the logic of the story line, including: a completely random episode of homosexual sex, a life changing experience that seemingly makes no impression on the character (not the sex), a random appearance of a wizard like character, and immaculate conception of a child.

Who let this book go to press?
