A principal member of the historical school of jurisprudence, he had a keen interest in its role in the subsequent development of European law. Private International Law is a volume drawn from his System of Modern Roman Law (1840-1849), an eight-volume study of contemporary legal systems based on Roman law. As the translator observes, this volume is valuable because it "deals with a subject of great practical importance, as to which the opinions of foreign jurists have always been respected in the British courts. And not only has the eighth volume itself been cited as an authority in our tribunals, but English writers have borrowed and enforced its doctrines with more or less exactness of reproduction" (Introduction, 9). High expectation, low satisfaction. I didn't like this book and can't understand the 4,5 stars in customers review rating. I gave it 2 stars and tried my best not to stop reading it to the end. I didn't recommend it.

A caver who loves CSI.......2007-09-03

Reading that a woman's mummy-like body is found in a cave after 30 years is what grabbed me into buying this book. I love caving and CSI. I found this book with it's forenstics easy to read. I read it in a day and rarely read fiction. Simply, what I love is that Dr. Bill Bass is a real forensic anthropologist and it is based on his experience. The story telling makes it more enjoyable than a serious book would be. I was surprised and thrilled by the humor. I would love to see it in a movie. Especially since Hollywood these days, reverts over and over again to remakes.

Carved in Bone is a ornately distinctive, fabulously thrilling, and a wonder voyage into the essence of forensic science. The book takes place in the center of the Appalachian Mountains, and the shadowy highways of the human mind. The authors do a fantastic job of traveling with their flamboyant characters, creating a gripping thriller full of twists and turns. This really is a magnificent read and I am hoping to pick up their other books, Death's Acre and Flesh and bone.

Dr. William Brockton is forensic anthropologist with the University of Tennessee and overseer of the Body Farm, made famous in Patricia Cornwell's bestselling novel of the same name. This installment of the Body Farm series finds Dr. Brockton called to Cooke County, Tennessee by Sheriff Tom Kitchings, where a woman's corpse lies mummified in a cave. When evidence of murder is revealed, Brockton, with the aid of Arthur Bohanan, criminalist with the Knoxville Police Department, embarks on his own investigation as to who killed the young woman and the unborn child she carried. Brockton soon finds himself stonewalled by the Sheriff and his deputies while someone is stealing evidence from his offices at U.T. The investigation leads Brockton and Bohanan into danger more than once, and forces Brockton to face the grief he has carried over the death of his wife two years earlier.

The name Jefferson Bass is a combination of two authors: Dr. Bill Bass, renowned forensic anthropologist with the University of Tennessee, and writer Jon Jefferson. Although Brockton is a fictional character based on Dr. Bass, Arthur Bohanan is a well-known criminalist, formerly with the Knoxville Police Department, and patented inventor of the process used to retrieve fingerprints from bodies and large objects.

Carved in Bone is a twisting mystery delivered in an informative style, with plenty of forensics relayed for those so interested. Brockton makes for an engaging character, with Southern roots and mannerisms, and his sidekick Bohanan is charming and witty. This mystery series' magical blend of storytelling with edification is sure to develop numerous fans and is one series this reviewer hopes will continue for years on end.

Excellent read.......2007-07-09

I have read most of Cornwell and Reichs. This rates right up there and in some instances surpasses their brilliance in creating a scene that is believable and horrifically bone chilling. Spiced up a bit with some deadly humor in spots, I highly recommend this book if you are a Cornwell or Reichs fan.
