Private International Law and the Retrospective Operation of Statutes: A Treatise on the Conflict of Laws and the Limits of Their Operation in Respect of Place and Time

Book Description
Savigny, Friedrich Carl von. Private International Law, and the Retrospective Operation of Statutes: A Treatise On the Conflict of Laws, and the Limits of Their Operation in Respect to Place and Time. Translated, With Notes, by William Guthrie. With an Appendix Containing the Treatises of Bartolus, Molinaeus, Paul Voet, and Huber. Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark, Law Publishers, 1880. xii, 567 pp. Reprinted 2003 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 2003052774. ISBN-13: 978-1-58477-367-2. ISBN-10: 1-58477-367-7. Cloth. $150. * Reprint of the second revised edition. Savigny [1779-1861] was an important German jurist and an excellent scholar of Roman law. A principal member of the historical school of jurisprudence, he had a keen interest in its role in the subsequent development of European law. Private International Law is a volume drawn from his System of Modern Roman Law (1840-1849), an eight-volume study of contemporary legal systems based on Roman law. As the translator observes, this volume is valuable because it "deals with a subject of great practical importance, as to which the opinions of foreign jurists have always been respected in the British courts. And not only has the eighth volume itself been cited as an authority in our tribunals, but English writers have borrowed and enforced its doctrines with more or less exactness of reproduction" (Introduction, 9). Beyond its lucid exposition of a complex subject, this book offers a wonderful introduction to Savigny's monumental study. With! an appendix containing a biography of Savigny and an index of English and Scottish cases.

A treatise on the conflict of laws

Book Description
Beale, Joseph H. A Treatise on the Conflict of Laws. New York: Baker, Voorhis & Co., 1935. Three volumes. Reprinted 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-425-8. Acid free paper. Cloth. New.* Reprint of the first edition. Beale's treatise ranks with Williston on Contracts and Wigmore on Evidence as one of the undisputed classics of twentieth-century American law. In fact, Jerome Frank claimed in Law and the Modern Mind that it may be the best legal work produced in his lifetime (48). The reasons for its importance are summarized nicely in an early review: "In the first place, it contains the most exhaustive collection of the American cases on the conflict of laws ever made. In the second place, it gives us the matured conclusions of the outstanding American student on the subject, conclusions arrived at and expressed in the prevailing philosophy of the legal profession. In the third place, it gives us in useable form the needed commentary upon the various sections of the Restatement without which it would be to know in many cases just what is meant or upon what authority the 'restatements' are made.": Walter Wheeler Cook, Columbia Law Review 35:1154-1162 cited in Marke, A Catalogue of the Law Collection of New York University (1953) 354.

Book Description
Reflecting the results of twenty years; experience in the field of multipurpose flights, this monograph includes the complex routes of the trajectories of a number of bodies (e.g., space vehicles, comets) in the solar system. A general methodological approach to the research of flight schemes and the choice of optimal performances is developed. Additionally, a number of interconnected methods and algorithms used at sequential stages of such development are introduced, which allow the selection of a rational multipurpose route for a space vehicle, the design of multipurpose orbits, the determination of optimal space vehicle design, and ballistic performances for carrying out the routes chosen. Other topics include the practical results obtained from using these methods, navigation problems, near-to-planet orbits, and an overview of proven and new flight schemes.

Cooperation and Conflict in General Evolutionary Processes
Manufacturer: Wiley-Interscience ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0471594873 |
Book Description
In May 1992, within the Arctic Circle and under the midnight sun, a small group of researchers from diverse disciplines met to study one of the most fundamental questions of existence: What are the roles of conflict and cooperation in the evolution of life? The answers that came—from such fields as physics, literature, biology, economics, linguistics, and computer science—shed new light on this very old question.
Sponsored by the Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Research, these internationally renowned scholars discussed and debated the complementary effects of individual self-interest and collective group interests. The twelve chapters in this volume, representing a wide range of perspectives, are the fruit of this meeting. They illustrate the dynamics of evolution and, contrary to many traditional ideas of nature, make a compelling case for the crucial role of cooperation in successful evolutionary adaptation.
The fascination of this volume lies in watching the push and pull of conflict and cooperation play out in such areas as economic organization, computer science, the development of urban structures, the evolution of languages, and molecular formation in the primeval environment.
Among the specific issues raised and illuminated:
Theoretical and evolutionary biologists, system theorists, economists, computer scientists, and mathematical modelers will find Cooperation and Conflict in General Evolutionary Processes a provocative and stimulating book that may open new perspectives on their own work.
Is Nature "red in tooth and claw''?
The twelve chapters in this volume offer an overview of the dynamics of evolutionary phenomena across a stimulating array of fields, including biology, economics, literature, physics, philosophy, linguistics, and computer science. Written by internationally recognized experts, they trace the issue of conflict vs. cooperation through such topics as molecular formation, city planning, and the building of intellectual structures.

"
On the campus of the University of Tennessee lies a patch of ground unlike any in the world. The ""Body Farm"" is a place where human corpses are left to the elements, and every manner of decay is fully explored -- for the sake of science and the cause of justice. The scientist who created the Body Farm has broken cold cases and revolutionized forensics, and now, in this heart-stopping novel, he spins an astonishing tale inspired by his own experiences.
A woman's corpse lies hidden in a cave in the mountains of East Tennessee. Undiscovered for thirty years, her body has been transformed by the cave's chemistry into a near-perfect mummy -- one that discloses an explosive secret to renowned anthropologist Bill Brockton. Dr. Brockton has spent his career surrounded by death and decay at the Body Farm, but even he is baffled by this case unfolding in a unique environment where nothing is quite what it seems.
The surreal setting is Cooke County, a remote mountain community that's clannish, insular, and distrustful of outsiders. The heartbreaking discovery of the young woman's corpse reopens old wounds and rekindles feuds dating back decades. The county's powerful and uncooperative sheriff and his inept deputy threaten to derail Brockton's investigation altogether. So do Brockton's other nemeses: his lingering guilt over the death of his wife, and the fury of a medical examiner whom Brockton dares to oppose in court.
Carved in Bone is a richly atmospheric, superbly suspenseful, and magnificently rendered trip into the world of forensic science, the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, and the dark passageways of the human psyche. Full of vivid characters and startling twists and turns, this thrilling novel heralds the debut of a major new voice in crime fiction -- and an unforgettable work from the hand of a scientific legend.
