ASIN: 0814407463 |
Book Description
Like product and service markets, employment markets go up and down, but they never stand still. For any staffing strategy to be effective, it must be responsive to changes both within and outside the organization. Consequently, such initiatives must be designed with the same forethought, care, and commitment that go into other business strategies.
Successful Talent Strategies provides a blueprint for talent planning in an economy where skillfully deployed human capital is the difference between unbridled success and struggling to stay afloat. Step by step, the book illustrates the process of creating a business-aligned talent system, with detailed strategies for:
* Aligning initiatives with department processes, corporate objectives, and market realities * Identifying necessary competencies and attributes * Establishing talent flow and talent engagement processes, including sourcing and retention methods, performance management, and reward systems * Measuring and improving talent strategy results, and more
Featuring many examples from companies of all types and sizes, Successful Talent Strategies can help any business find and keep top talent in any conditions.
Customer Reviews:
David Sears is a brilliant man........2004-09-17
After reading just the very first chapter, I knew that this author had talent in addressing the business skills of today's world. I was truly inspired by his ethical usage of business plannign and skills. His market-focused staffing theories were brilliant. A top read!
The Magic Connection: Talent and Profits.......2002-11-10
The lexicon birthed a new word not so long ago: talent. No, actually the word is not new, but the way the word is applied as taken on new meaning. "Talent" now describes the people who work for an organization, with a particular focus on the skills, knowledge, and capabilities they bring. Talent is more than just workers; it's the collective capacity of people to contribute to the achievement of results. The concept of talent, as the definition is evolving, links the application of competence to fulfillment of corporate strategy. While some may argue that the difference between "workers" and "talent" is merely semantic, others will assert that the engagement of human capability-from education, experience, expertise, and leadership-adds considerable value to viewing employees as mere human resources.
This concept of "talent" and its appropriate productive use is getting a lot of attention in various books and periodicals. Jim Collins in his book, "Good to Great," talks about having the right people---in the right seats---on the bus. Why? Having the most talented people to perform particular jobs is critical to an organization's success.
Most organizations don't have the right mix of people--talent---assigned to the right roles. And, to exacerbate the problem, they're burdened with too many people who, for various reasons, should no longer be employed by the company. The unavoidable consequence is that the organization is seriously inhibited in its drive to achieve its strategic objectives.
This potential-limiting condition can be overcome through effective talent management. This practice must be deeply imbedded in the corporate value system, touted by its leaders and enforced by its managers. Note that talent management is not a human resources issue; it's a leadership and management role. Human resource professionals have a part to play, but its not their game.
Sears begins his book with a vital section on the relationship between talent strategies and business strategies. They are inextricably linked; success at one strategy is interdependent with success in the other. It is obvious that attracting and engaging the right talent at the right time is essential.
In my work as a strategic business futurist concentrating on workforce and workplace trends, I have forecasted that the management of this linkage will influence the very survival of organizations. In our book, "Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People," we sounded a wake-up call for corporate leaders about the severe shortage of skilled labor coming in this decade. A major part of the solution---to avoid extinction---is talent management, and Sears teaches the process in his book. There is a clear and powerful congruence between anticipated challenges and recommended solutions.
Sears addresses how to build, deliver, and measure talent strategies in the second section of "Successful Talent Strategies." From his perspective as a consultant with significant experience in the human resource field, explains, with ample examples, just how talent management works. Charts and graphs illustrate the journey, with the message continually connected to corporate strategy. The message is that talent strategy is driven by corporate strategy. The acquisition and application of talent, inside and outside the organization, enables leaders to achieve desired results.
This insightful how-to book will take some concentration to read and "get." Not every leader nor experienced human resource professional will be able to fully immerse and gain the considerable value of this book. But that's what separates people who make things happen from those who wonder what happened. The convergence of trends will move us along at an increasingly rapid pace. If you want to be one of those who makes things happen, by understanding, developing, and applying cohesive strategies, read this book.

Book Description
Kaboom! About 4.6 billion years ago, a swirling gas cloud comprised of carbon dust, hydrogen, helium, water and ice collapsed under its own gravity, creating an enormous explosion the — a big bang, so to speak. As it contracted, the solar system we know today began to take shape. In The Solar System, readers journey back billions of years, to witness the birth of the planets, stars, and more. This insightful book features the following.
• The celestial bodies that make up our fascinating solar system are explored with a team of scientists and experts .
• This book offers provocative research of the nine major planets, their largest moons, famous comets and asteroids, and illuminates the amazing details of their creation, development and discovery.
• Unique spreads contain detailed descriptions, important data tables, intriguing graphics and lavish artworks of the planets, moons and other key celestial bodies.
• Interesting speculation is discussed about the possibility one day — perhaps in the year 2515 — of people inhabiting the moon.
• Fascinating information and more than 500 spectacular color illustrations and photographs add to this insightful book.

Madder and Madder.......2007-08-19
I didn't have the problem of the previous reviewer. I received a good and clean copy. Now, to the book and its content. It is a remarkably well researched and well written book, with copious and helpful illustrations, glossary, appendices, notes, bibliography, and index. It basically presents and discusses all aspects of the subject madder (pun intended), from myth to history, through botany, agronomy, technology, and economy. Highly recommended to scholars, professionals, as well as interested individuals.
madder red .......2006-01-30
The product that I recieved is not the same edition as the one pictured on the websight and is a very low quality version. I sent it back because it wouldn't have lasted- I recieved a crummy glue bound book with cheap paper inside of a glossy cardboard cover. I've seen the edition that is shown on the websight and its a nice, properly-bound book with dust jacket. Amazon charged me for the return shipping saying that it was not their fault that I was dissatisfied with the book. (I contend.)

Requiem for Nature
ASIN: 0521851327 |
Book Description
This book explores the epistemological and ethical issues at the foundations of environmental philosophy, emphasizing the conservation of biodiversity. Sahota Sarkar criticizes previous attempts to attribute intrinsic value to nature and defends an anthropocentric position on biodiversity conservation based on an untraditional concept of transformative value. Unlike other studies in the field of environmental philosophy, this book is as much concerned with epistemological issues as with environmental ethics. It covers a broad range of topics, including problems of explanation and prediction in traditional ecology and how individual-based models and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology is transforming ecology. Introducing a brief history of conservation biology, Sarkar analyzes the new consensus framework for conservation planning through adaptive management. He concludes with a discussion of the future directions for theoretical research in conservation biology and environmental philosophy.

Book Description
The value of planet Earth's biodiversity has been estimated at US $16-54 trillion per year. Trillions of dollars of food, raw materials, pharmaceuticals, oxygen production, soil nutrient enrichment, climate regulation and sheer aesthetic delight and wonder. We are reliant on biodiversity to keep the plant healthy and resilient.
The 2nd edition of Biodiversity and Conservation continues offers an introductory guide through the maze of interdisciplinary themes that combine under the concept of 'biodiversity.' Using engaging examples throughout the text combines biological sciences with its insights into the origins, variety and distribution of biodiversity, with the analysis of the social and political context, the threats to and opportunities for the survival of natural systems. Whilst retaining its existing structure the new edition reflects advances that have demonstrated the importance of living systems as drivers of environmental services vital to human health and security. The processes driving the creation and distribution of biodiversity have been updated to reflect new research. The final chapter has been revised to tackle more explicitly the contrasting approaches to conservation.
The text remains the only introductory book bringing together the full range of science and social sciences, theory and practice that goes to make up biodiversity and conservation.

Book Description
This concise introductory text provides a complete overview of biodiversity - what it is, how it arose, its distribution, why it is important, human impact upon it, and what should be done to maintain it.The field of biodiversity is rapidly developing as new research challenges and furthers our understanding of this stimulating subject. This new edition has been substantially revised to take account of these recent developments. Much of the text has been rewritten, updated and extended to provide an up-to-date examination of key issues, and includes the newest models, experiments and research. Throughout the text reference is made to the relevant primary literature and each chapter ends with suggestions for further reading, including the most important new articles and books. All the figures included in the book are downloadable from the Blackwell Publishing website.Biodiversity: An Introduction has been designed primarily for undergraduates studying biodiversity on a range of courses in botany, zoology and ecology. It is also essential reading for anyone requiring an overview of the vast literature on this topic.
Customer Reviews:
Tries to do too much.........2000-07-04
This is a very terse book. The stated purpose, according to the authors (Kevin Gaston and John Spicer at the University of Sheffield, UK) is to "cover as much ground in as few pages as possible." It succeeds, to a limited extent, by providing an outline to key issues associated with biodiversity research. It supplements this skeletal approach with numerous references for additional reading, and a few URLs. While there is a clear need for a succinct reader on biodiversity, I cannot recommend this book as a good introductory text. It tries to be too broad (including, e.g., biodiversity below the earth's surface) rather than being more informative on a focused range of topics. As a result the coverage on many of the topics is maddeningly shallow - for example, 1 page on species-area relationships, 1/3rd of a page on local versus regional diversity (without reference to alpha, beta, gamma diversity), a short paragraph on patterns of diversity with productivity, and a discussion of endemism without reference to historical or spatial isolation. One way the 113-page book might have been better executed in comparable length is by omitting the marginally informative 5th chapter on "maintaining biodiversity," which uses 1/6th of the book's length to outline the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Despite these crippling problems the book does convey many of the critical issues facing scientists, environmentalists and policy makers in this poorly understood (and frequently misrepresented) subject. The first 3 chapters provide a useful overview of the elements and surrogates for biodiversity, historical diversification, and some of the challenges to mapping biodiversity at a range of spatial scales.

Book Description
This is the first introductory text on conservation biology to focus clearly on southern Australia and the problems that face its native animals and plants and their habitats as a result of human interference. Beginning with a comprehensive discussion of the broad principles of conservation biology and its importance in Australia, Conservation Biology covers: the development of conservation practive and theory in Australia, using local examples to provide a framework for understanding; the extent and nature of the need for conservation in southern Australia; extinction and its significance; the meanings, levels, and interpretation of the concept of biodiversity; the notion of rarity, and its evaluation in terms of establishing he conservation status of flora and fauna; approaches to species and ecosystem conservation, including reserve design and setting priorities for conservation management, conservation beyond reserves, and ex situ conservation (encompassing captive breeding and reintroduction); the considerable number of threats to species and ecosystems; Australia's conservation responsibilities in a global context. Conservation Biology features a series of topical case histories that highlight management issues and some of the successes and disappointments that have occurred, and each chapter includes suggestions for further reading.

Description:
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers ST1 and ST2 were designed for the specific amplification of ribosomal DNA from Stropharia aurantiaca, and a nested PCR method was developed for the detection of S. aurantiaca in garden soils and mulches. The results of PCR screening of garden soils and mulches indicated that S. aurantiaca could be detected in the absence of visible fruiting bodies. The occurrence of S. aurantiaca in soil and mulch was investigated to determine if the application of wood-chip mulch resulted in the introduction of the fungus or the stimulation of an already present population.
