"...if you demand the deepest and most powerful planning engine, look no further." -- The Washington Post

ESPlanner, developed by Economic Security Planning, Inc., revolutionizes financial planning. Traditional financial planning makes you set your own saving and life insurance targets. This is hard and, if you set your targets too low, dangerous. ESPlanner finds your targets for you by doing life cycle consumption smoothing--finding the most you can spend today without suffering a drop in living standard tomorrow. ESPlanner not only calculates your family's highest sustainable living standard, it also determines the amounts of saving and life insurance you need to maintain and protect that living standard through time. ESPlanner delivers its findings in the form of annual spending, saving, and insurance recommendations.

Whether you're working or retired, maximizing and smoothing your household's living standard isn't easy. Many factors are involved, including your household composition, assets, earnings, retirement ages, housing expenses and plans, special expenditures, estate plans, pensions, tax-favored assets, federal and state income taxes, payroll taxes, Social Security retirement and survivor benefits, desired changes in living standard, economies in shared living, and borrowing constraints. ESPlanner considers these and a host of other factors, including contingent plans and the fact that survivors may have different needs and incomes. ESPlanner also lets you vary key inputs, such as the ages at which you'll retire, collect Social Security retirement benefits, and start to withdraw tax-deferred assets, to determine how these choices affect your maximum sustainable living standard. Although its calculations are complex, ESPlanner's interface is user-friendly, and its recommendations are easy to follow.

1 out of 5 stars to the recycle bin.......2007-07-15

I am not sure where to begin, but, if i were interested in this topic I would not start with this text. I bought this book used - reviewed it in about 15 mintutes - at which time i decided it would be of no value to me nor my HR professional wife - leading me to the decision to drop it into the paper recycle bin. Unlike the other reviews - this is not a marketing message - just an honest appraisal.

What a useful primer for anyone who has responsibility for hiring people. I bought this book, read it and continue to refer back to it. The author has written a book that anyone could benefit from. My wife and I even used it when we hired our nanny. Thank you

        Book Description

Throughout history, the mysterious dark skies have inspired our imaginations in countless ways, influencing our endeavors in science and philosophy, religion, literature, and art. Filled with 380 full-color illustrations, Celestial Treasury shows the influence of astronomical theories and the richness of illustrations in Western civilization through the ages. The authors explore the evolution of our understanding of astronomy and weave together ancient and modern theories in a fascinating narrative. They incorporate a wealth of detail from Greek verse, medieval manuscripts and Victorian poetry with contemporary spacecraft photographs and computer-generated star charts. Celestial Treasury is more than a beautiful book: it answers a variety of questions that have intrigued scientists and laymen for centuries.
      • How did philosophers and scientists try to explain the order that governs celestial motion?
      • How did geometers and artists measure and map the skies?
      • How many different answers have been proposed for the most fundamental of all questions: When and how did Earth come about?
      • Who inhabits the heavens--gods, angels or extraterrestrials? No other book recounts humankind's fascination with the heavens as compellingly as Celestial Treasury. Marc Lachièze-Rey is a director of research at the Centre National pour la Récherche Scientifique and astrophysicist at the Centre d'Etudes de Saclay. He is the author of The Cosmic Background Radiation (Cambridge, 1999), and and The Quest for Unity, (Oxford, 1999 ), as well as many books in French. Jean-Pierre Luminet is a research director of the Centre National pour la Rechérche Scientifique, based at the Paris-Meudon observatory. He is the author of Black Holes, (Cambridge 1992), as well as science documentaries for television.

5 out of 5 stars Big and beautiful.......2002-04-11

This is such a book as would have the most hardened reviewer reaching for the overworked superlatives. Impressive in size and sumptuous in production, for what is actually quite a reasonable price in present-day terms, it contrives to set forth much of the aesthetic attraction of astronomy both ancient and modern.

The authors have marshalled a stunning array of historical and modem imagery under the general headings of "The harmony of the world", "Uranometry", "Cosmogenesis", and "Creatures of the sky". Not the least of its virtues is that as the original edition was jointly published by the Bibliothèque Nationale, the authors have been able to obtain readier access to the treasures of that institution than many other researchers find possible.

Many of the illustrations from conventional astronomical rare books are familiar, though the hand-colouring of different copies makes a fascinating comparison, but others are less so - apart from the unique manuscript sources, the authors have made appropriate use of decorative embossed book covers, illustrations from l9th and 2Oth century books, especially early science fiction, early space art and even comic books. It can be a trifle disconcerting to find, for example, a modern map of the cosmic microwave background radiation juxtaposed with a l4th century manuscript, but such comparisons can be quite reasonable as long as they are not taken too literally.
Although the innumerable illustrations are the most prominent feature of the book, the authors' impeccable credentials as high officials of the CNRS and as successful popularizers of astronomy lend the text authority and style. The authors have carefully described the significance of the thought behind the historic images, and the whole book will make a marvellous crib for captions and exhibitions, as well as being ideal fodder for picture researchers.
The whole book is a striking demonstration that the most valuable use of historical imagery is to provide an accessible entry point to the subject; such beautiful images, intelligently explained, can engage the interest and commitment of the mathematically challenged in a way that the Schwarzschild Radius or the Chandrasekhar Limit will never do. A book that anybody with the slightest interest in the subject would be delighted to find .

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully enhanced with 380 full-color illustrations.......2001-11-12

Celestial Treasury: From The Music Of The Spheres To The Conquest Of Space is an impressive coffee-table book surveying the history of man's exploration of the stars. The informative and engaging text is wonderfully enhanced with 380 full-color illustrations as the reader is treated to a full spectrum history of astronomy from antiquity down to the present day. Along the way such questions are addressed as how philosophers and scientists approach explaining the order that governs celestial motions; how geometers and artists measure and map the skies; when and how the Earth came into being; who inhabits the heaves; and more. Celestial Treasury is especially recommended as a "Memorial Gift" acquisition for both academic and community library astronomy and history of science collections.

            Book Description

We live in the first generations with enough historical data to detect a pattern of Universal History. The discovery of this pattern, the Eonic Effect, uncovers the evidence for a deep structure resembling punctuated equilibrium in world history itself. The study of history and evolution together shows us something missing in current theories and allows us to infer the existence of non-random evolution in the emergence of man. Combining the methods of complex systems and the philosophy of history, we can create a novel type of historical model, using nothing more than periodization to clock a macroevolutionary dynamic of transitions, in the process throwing new light on the descent of man, and the limits of evolutionary theory.

Starting with the question of turning points in history, we construct our model around the issues and theories of the birth of civilization, the Axial Age, and the enigma of modernity. The result is one of the most comprehensive treatments of historical evolution in print, with a rigorous analysis of the question of historical directionality. The model resolves Kant's Challenge to find the pattern of Universal History, and includes several detailed outlines of world history, with new insights into the Axial Age, the significance of Classical Greece, Old Testament histories, the emergence of the great religions, globalization, the Industrial Revolution and the economic interpretation of history, the rise of science, the evolution of art seen in the riddle of Greek Tragedy, the theories of Toynbee and Spengler, and much else. Also included are discussions of reductionism and teleology, the evolution of religion, secularism and the Enlightenment, economic theories, the ideology! of revolution, the end of history, and the postmodern phenomenon.

This elegant and simple model can operate on two levels and sort out the endemic confusion of biological and cultural evolution, along with the contradictions of historicism and historical inevitability. This account of the `evolution of freedom' without metaphysics gives us the key to the evolution of consciousness. We see the real evolution of man as the Great Transition, the human passage from evolution to history, in the chronicle of the once and future Origin of the Species, Man.

1 out of 5 stars An Amazing Pile of Incomprehensible Junk.......2006-11-09

            Just read a paragraph.

What's it worth? IT IS SELF-PUBLISHED.
No legitimate publisher would touch this embarrassing nonsense.

3 out of 5 stars POD publication and Darwin book market.......2005-09-17

            From the Preface:
World History and The Eonic Effect used the new POD technology to bypass the Darwin/ID dominated book market and was never submitted to a general publisher, despite requests to do so.
Further, we need to bypass the whole peer review obsession, the deadlocked Darwin debate and the Darwin book market. Let's face it, any book on evolution that passes through the current peer review system is immediately suspect. Either the author is a true believer, and not worth reading, or he is dissembling, because of the consequences of dissent. It makes for a tricky literature to deal with. The religious wing challenging Darwin isn't much better. The technology of Print-On-Demand used for the book is a godsend, and a way to bypass all this, but infuriates Darwinists who live by peer review control of the sources of public information on evolution.

The current peer review system, which now includes its own opposite with Intelligent Design peer review, is incapable of critiquing Darwinian theory, and the result is a misleading literature that is more disinformation than science. A rigged game, that cancels itself out. World history is ultra-complex, and there are no experts, and certainly no scientific methodology to fall back on.

This technology creates a golden opportunity to really test the limits of theory. In fact, although they won't say so, many Darwinists, and students in other fields, have found the argument of great interest, although it is taboo to say so in public, and the risk to someone's reputation is almost immediate. Behind the scenes, a quiet desperation lurks, because the reigning paradigm is turning everyone into a careerist dissembler, if anyone is left after the `natural selection' of dissenters.

            _____________________
The two reviews below are part of a smear campaign by reviewers who are Darwin fanatics and who hide behind anonymity because they wish to attack a book without reading it and have no idea of its real contents. This originates from debates in a well-known Darwin email forum, and these tactics are intimidation. The first has already had four attempted pseudo-reviews withdrawn by Amazon. More importantly, the second outrageously charges the book with being anti-science, anti-evolution, anti-rationalist, anti-Enlightenment in some postmodern vein, ambiguously left or right (which is it?) Since the book _explicitly_ critiques postmodernism, discusses the science of history, historical evolution, the place of reason in history, and a defense of the Enlightenment's place in history, the reviewer could hardly have even glanced at the text. This is one of the most vigorous defenses of the Enlightenment current. These statements are a total distortion of the author's views. Reviewing a book requires reading it to find out what it says. John Landon

            1 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible.......2005-08-30

I found this to be a rather incomprehensible book. The writing is, to be blunt, rather horrid. Somehow the thesis is that Darwin is wrong and human history proves it. The author shows a lack of knowledge in the biology of evolution and a inability to understand the differences between Darwin and human history. And yet even this minimal tidbit is difficult to draw out since clarity seems to have taken a back seat in the writing process.

There are much better- and more lucid- books on evolution and human history out there for your dollar.

1 out of 5 stars [...]; that ought to give you a hint........2005-08-12

There have been some terrible outcomes in what's been called the Post-Modern era. On the left there was the silly growth of deconstructionism and political correctness. On the right, a rising anti-intellectualism cloaked in theoretical trapping, a disrespect for the value of science and a belief in religious values over scientific substance; a terrible retreat from the Age of Enlightenment.

Much of this silliness is reflected in this anti-science, anti-evolution, anti-rationalist book that claims to have discovered "the rhythm of history" in the science of history. A sad echo of an echo of Toynbee, who at least had a grasp of history rather than the historiological babbling contained in this book. Creationists/ID backers will love this rather silly pseudo-intellectual flotsom and jetsom. A wonderful example of how to say a whole lot of nothing with as little Anglo-Saxon verbage as possible. Don't waste your time on this.

5 out of 5 stars an astonishing range and depth / captivation.......2004-08-06

when you read this book, you feel wrapped up in the struggle of world history. And you should, and you are. You feel like you have finally found a voice of sanity, against the dogmatic darwinists, and the fantastic diests. A third way. Directionality, without a director. Without teleology. The social is our subject--values. A value-free objective theory of history would give us a less meaning'd flatness of time, where we could not say what was good, and what was bad. But some know. There is freedom, there is equality, at least a bit of it, these days. And when the social tends towards these things, we say it is good. There is creation, artistry, and some can perceive it. This book just keeps going on and on, meandering through all the intellectual and material craziness of history, and it reveals to you what you yourself would know had you read as much, and with as much vision, as Landon. We thank him for this work. I dare say, if you read this, your symbolic prison of intellectual confusion based on an entire culture of deception and blindness, will be exploded, and you may now be in the position to understand woman and man, and to bring to light a new age, where myth no longer rules--where nerve and creativity rule, unhindered by all the false theories of history, of reality, that are so seemingly easily undone in the course of this expansive, illuminating work. Great show.

              Book Description

Here is a clear, non-mathematical introduction to a rapidly developing area of physics. The volume provides scientists, students, teachers, and research workers with wide-ranging information on how models can be used to explain the macroscopic properties of solids. It includes full-chapter
guidance on thermal properties, electrical properties, and the behavior of electrons in metals, semiconductors, and superconductors. Magnetic properties are given proper consideration, and mechanical properties such as plasticity, dislocation, and diffusion are covered. In addition, detailed
mathematical treatments are presented in easy-to-use boxed sections for those who wish to study the subject in greater depth.

5 out of 5 stars Dog Lovers Story.......2003-01-27

If you are a dog lover, like I am, then this quick read (a little over a hundred pages) is for you. For me, the title slightly misses the point. "My Life With Beau" is closer. Beau is a golden retriever and to me, the real star of the story.

More seriously, the author's style reminds me a lot of Bill Geist the humorist on CBS' Sunday Morning program. I didn't so much find myself laughing out loud as smiling throughout at the quips. This is the kind of book that makes you yearn for another Sunday afternoon in front of the fire reading.
