Tom Yulsman has succeeded in explaining extremely difficult concepts, such as quantum mechanics, planet, star and galaxy formation, as well as theories on the creation of the universe and life, in a concise, interesting and understandable way. His writing is both humerous and gripping and kept me intrigued, thirsting for more information with every turn of the page.

This work was first-drafted five years ago at the invitation of the editors of the Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications. However, it was found to contain insufficient physical applications for that series, hence it has finally come to rest at the doorstep of the American Mathematical Society. The first half of the work is little changed from the original, a fact which may partly explain both the illusions to applications and the elementary approach. It was written to be understood by a reader having minimal familiarity with continuous time stochastic processes. The most advance prerequisite is a discrete parameter martingale convergence theorem.

General summary and outline:

0. Introduction. Some gratuitous generalities on scientific method as it relates to diffusion theory.

1. Brownian motion is defined by the characterization of P. Lévy. Then it is constructed in three basic ways and these are proved to be equivalent in the appropriate sense. Uniqueness theorem.

2. Projective invariance and the Brownian bridge presented. Probabilistic and absolute properties are distinguished. Among the former: the distribution of the maximum, first passage time distributions, and fitting probabilities. Among the latter: law of created logarithm, quadratic variation, Hölder continuity, non-recurrence for $r\geq 2$.

3. General methods of Markov processes adapted to diffusion. Analytic and probabilistic methods are distinguished. Among the former: transition functions, semigroups, generators, resolvents. Among the latter: Markov properties, stopping times, zero-or-one laws, Dynkin's formula, additive functionals.

4. Classical modifications of Brownian motion. Absorption and the Dirichlet problem. Space-time process and the heat equation. Killed processes, Green functions, and the distributions of additive sectionals. Time-change theorem (classical case), parabolic equations and their solution semigroups, some basic examples, distribution of passage times.

5. Local time: construction by random walk embedding. Local time processes. Trotter's theorem. The Brownian flow. Brownian excursions. The zero set and Lévy's equivalence theorem. Local times of classical diffusions. Sample path properties.

6. Boundary conditions for Brownian motion. The general boundary conditions. Construction of the processes using local time. Green functions and eigenfunction expansions (compact case).

7. The chapter is a "finale" on nonsingular diffusion. The generators $(d/dm)(d^+/dx^+)$ are characterized. The diffusions on open intervals are constructed. The conservative boundary conditions are obtained and their diffusions are constructed. The general additive functionals and nonconservative diffusions are developed and expressed in terms of Brownian motions.

The audience for this survey is anyone who desires an introduction to Markov processes with continuous paths which is both coherent and elementary. The approach is from the particular to the general. Each method is first explained in the simplest case and supported by examples. Therefore, the book should be readily understandable to anyone with a first course in measure-theoretic probability.

These notes represent approximately the second half of lectures given by the author at ETH in a Nachdiplom course (winter term 1991-92), followed by six lectures in November and December 1993.

They are organized in nine chapters, six of which are devoted to: expansion of filtration formulae; Burkholder-Gundy inequalities; martingales which vanish on the zero set of Brownian motion; the Azéma-Emery martingales and chaos representation; the filtration of truncated Brownian motion attempts to characterize the Brownian filtration.

The three remaining chapters concern principal value of diffusion local times, probabilistic representations of the Riemann zeta function, and prograss made on some topics discussed in Part I.

Most of the contents of this book are objects of active research, centered on real-valued martingales and Brownian motion. This volume may be of interest to researchers either in probability theory or in more applied fields, such as mathematical finance.

T. H. Huxley (1825-1895) was not only an active protagonist in the religious and scientific upheaval that followed the publication of Darwin's theory of evolution but also a harbinger of the sociobiological debates about the implications of evolution that are now going on. His seminal lecture Evolution and Ethics, reprinted here with its introductory Prolegomena, argues that the human psyche is at war with itself, that humans are alienated in a cosmos that has no special reference to their needs, and that moral societies are of necessity in conflict with the natural conditions of their existence. Seen in the light of current understanding of the mechanisms of evolution, these claims remain as controversial today as they were when Huxley proposed them. In this volume George Williams, one of the best-known evolutionary biologists of our time, asserts that recent biological ideas and data justify a more extreme condemnation of the "cosmic process" than Huxley advocated and more extreme denial that the forces that got us here are capable of maintaining a viable world. James Paradis, an expert in Victorian studies, has written an introduction that sets the celebrated lecture in the context of cultural history, revealing it to be an impressive synthesis of Victorian thinking, as well as a challenge to eighteenth-century assumptions about the harmony of of nature. With Huxley's lecture as a focal point, the three parts of this book unite philosophy and science in a shared quest that recalls their common origins as systems of knowledge.

The pleasure of Huxley's grandiloquent prose, argument by horticultural metaphor and analogy, the breadth and scope of cosmic and social forces, and use of fairy tale combine into a masterful argument for evolution and ethics. Obviously, since Mendelian genetics was not yet known, Huxley's view of evolution is incomplete. But, Huxley already saw the defects of Spencer's "survival of the fittest," the emergence of existential self-assertion, and the tension in the forces between competition in the struggle for survival and cooperation as a means for its achievement.

Huxley's purpose is not to prescribe, but to warn of the pitfalls of imposing "nature as a guide" or the Stoic's "live according to nature" to humans' moral sense. He rightly keeps virtue, instinct, benevolence, limited resources, reproduction, and self-preservation in proper tension and focus. Most importantly, he argues forcefully that evolutionary theory is a theory of nature, not a moral prescription, but equally, no moral sense or moral theory can successfully ignore evolution's essential insights. The balance in sustaining competing concepts is dazzling.

Huxley's masterful essay is preceded by James Faradis's introduction on Huxley's Victorian context and is followed by G. C. Williams's update of the Modern Synthesis. A gem and treasure, all. Especially valuable to non-biologists.
