This brilliantly written book unlocks the astounding implications of Einstein's revolutionary theories on the nature of science, time and motion. It far surpasses any previous explanation of Relativity for laymen.
Customer Reviews:
UNDERSTANDING AN IMPORTANT WORLDVIEW.......2007-07-17
The book "EINSTEIN'S UNIVERSE" by NIGEL CALDER is a very good choice as a primer, not simly to learn facts, but to understand the intricate and conclusive ways of thinking of the genius ALBET EINSTEIN, whom our world owes so much. The chapters are clearly anounced by their titles, and each chapter starts with a summery of fife lines, wich can also be rered after
finishing the chapter for personal confirmation, but also, if the reader
is looking for some item long after he read the book.
As the book is written in an easy to read english, i enjoyed its reading very much.
Good, but not the best, and a little outdated.......2005-12-16
I though that Calder did an excellent job of simplifying relativity theory, which I suppose was his goal. I found myself wishing that he had not simplified quite so much, and explained WHY things happen instead of WHAT happens, as he tends to do sometimes. In addition to that, this book is a little behind the times when it comes to theories (though Calder can hardly be blamed for that, seeing as he wrote it before these new theories were developed). Overall, it is a good introduction to relativity theory, very easy to understand, but you will probably need another deeper book or two to really get a grasp on it.
The Universe Made Simple? Fascinating!.......2003-10-31
How does one go about taking our immense universe--with all its galaxies, quasars, neutron stars, etc.--and put it into words that a high school senior could understand? Not only that, but include all of Albert Einstein's mind boggling theories on the universe and still make it interesting to read?
Ladies and gentleman, I give you Einstein's Universe. A book written by Nigel Calder. Mr. Calder delves deep into the inner workings of two of the most complex things known to man, the universe and Einstein's brain. He does so with great confidence, writing in the first person, as if it were Einstein himself explaining his theories. This leads to a feeling of intimacy while reading about the creation of the universe and many other topics related to the giant realm we call home. Nigel Calder does a superb job of presenting the theories and the evidence, and then always proceeding to explain how it all fits together.
If you've got a hankerin' for something juicy sweet to read, and enjoy pondering the ways of the great big black thing way up there, I highly recommend Einstein's Universe. Enjoy!
Relativity Made Easy!.......2001-11-08
For a long time I've desired an understanding of relativity. Having just finished this book, I have achieved my goal -- without struggling with impossible equations. Thank you, Nigel Calder.
Due to the complex subject, this book isn't a particularly easy read. But the author keeps it very interesting and does as good a job as possible in translating the theories into understandable concepts. If you want to understand how gravity, time, space, energy, and mass are all tied together via relativity, then this book is for you.
There is an incredible amount of information packed into the pages. The famous equation E=Mc2 has never meant anything to me, but after reading just the first 25 pages of this book, I was able to explain to my wife the meaning and significance of the equation and some of the thought processes that led Einstein to develop it! I feel so much smarter now!
There were only a few places where I thought the author could have done a better job explaining some concepts, and some illustrations here and there would have been helpful. But if you are capable of understanding the Doppler effect, you are capable of understanding the major concepts of relativity.
Now I feel ready to tackle the basics of quantum theory!
Descriptive and Energetic.......2001-09-23
Mr. Calder has done an outstanding job writing a book about relativity that non-physicists can read and enjoy. Mr. Calder writes with such clarity, such tangible descriptions, and such succinct summaries of the theory that the reader can begin to incorporate the implications of the theory into one's own worldview.
For instance, the author devotes much time and energy describing the possibilities of the universe being either open or closed (essentially, will the universe expand indefinitely, or will it eventually contract). By the time Mr. Calder begins to describe the metaphysical implications of these possibilities, the conscientious reader is already prepared to explore them on his own.
This ability to communicate science with such clarity as to allow a lay reader, whom I certainly am in physics, to be able to consider the implications of science, is a great complement to the author. Unfortunately, I am a hostage to much of what I read in science, so often having to rely on the author to describe the science as well as its implications.
In addition to summarizing and communicating extremely difficult material very well, Mr. Calder also writes with a great deal of energy and excitement. The author clearly shares his excitement about the subject matter to the reader.
This is an excellent read for anyone interested in the history of science and its implications.

Book Description
Nigel Calder's landmark book has been acclaimed for making Albert Einstein's theories of relativity accessible to the public. The universe that Einstein built is an astonishing skyscape of bent starlight, high-speed astronauts, black holes, stormy galaxies, and exploding spacetime. Today it seems more certain than ever that we live in the cosmos he describedyet often we still fail to understand it. Einstein's Universe unlocks the secrets of an astounding vision of the world. How can a black hole keep you young? Why does a falling person feel no force of gravity? Answering these and many other questions, Einstein's Universe makes plain the debt that humanity owes to the man who completely reshaped our ideas of energy, time, and motion.

Relativity for Dummies.......2003-12-07
I hesitated on the title because it could imply that this book is for "dummies" when in actuality one must have a "relative" understanding of science (phyics and math) in order to truly tackle the subject. But Nigel Calder has made the whole thing a lot easier.
This is NOT one of those small books with large writing and illustrations every over page. It is condensed but not obtuse - no difficult equations or esoteric 11 dimensional theory. The author tackles two subjects - Einstein and his work. Both are interesting to study but as time passes the focus will swing to the latter.
The book has chapters on almost every aspect of the theory - time, gravity, space, acceleration, light, energy, matter... It is almost too much to grasp but Calder does a fine job of organizing the material. Good book.
E=mc² finally makes sense.......1999-01-05
For the first time I had the impression I could grasp some of the ideas behind the Relativity Theory. I had read a couple of books before this and did not go much further than understanding the principles of Doppler effect. But Calder's explanations and examples managed to give someone completely innocent of anything but the basics of Newton's gravitation laws some understanding of the relations between energy, mass, acceleration and gravity. The reading is always interesting, the chaining of ideas makes sense most of the time, and the understanding of this quite counter-intuitive theory is enormously rewarding.
The best introduction I've read on the subject.......1998-07-11
Calder's book is a lucid and revealing introduction to a subject that defies intuition on first exposure. Einstein developed Special Relativity first, then General Relativity. Virtually every other book presents the two theories in this order. Calder's reverses the order, and makes the subject much more approachable.

$1,200??.......2005-09-15
I bought the 1997 edition of this book, with CD, in 2001 for $70.00 -- I cannot recommend it as being worth more than that. I really didn't find it to be very useful for my original intent, which was to have a good reference for instrumental techniques, including those used in pharmaceutical and biological research. The CD included with the book has a simple, almost DOS level, program that installs and aids to some small extent in picking specific methods to do analysis of some sample type you input. My only comment is that, if you need this kind of gimmick to choose your analytical method, you would be better off getting into a job or a class that uses current analytical instrumentation.
Having seen the current offering price and since I still have the book, little used, my quandary is whether I should be offering it for some highly inflated price, or go ahead and give it to the Goodwill as I was about to do.
A Good book for Any instrumental Lab.......2001-02-10
This book is a must for the instrumental chemist. It covers it some detail most general and specialized instrumental techniques employed by chemist. It also gives specific applications of these techniques, manufacturers of instruments and supplies, and estimates on costs. In my lab I often find people first refering to this book when reviewing a new technique or wishing to 'brush up' on a technique they have not used in a while. It is a good first reference and I reccomend it to any analytical chemist.
Review from Analytical Consumer.......1997-10-22
Have you ever tried to explain what analytical chemistry is, to a friend, relative, or stranger feigning interest in what you do? The attempt quickly reveals the depth and complexity of a field so easily named with two simple words. Where do you begin? What do you leave out? Trying to write a textbook on the many facets of analytical chemistry is even more difficult; some attempts run to many volumes. Some texts focus on the physical principles of a technique, others on the applications. Prentice-Hall's new Handbook of Instrumental Techniques for Analytical Chemistry (Frank Every lab occasionally faces a problem outside the usual routine - questions their normal instruments can't answer. The Handbook helps them figure out what instruments might do the job. The goal of the book is to introduce nonspecialist scientists to the major techniques, outlining how each works, what it does, its limitations, the information produced, plus practical matters such as costs to buy and operate, and the expertise required of an operator. Each chapter has a list of manufacturers and a bibliography for further self-education. A person who goes through a chapter will be ready to ask intelligent questions of experts in the field and understand the buzzwords peculiar to each discipline. The book contains a CD-ROM with software for selecting appropriate methods for a sample and analysis; since it runs on Windows (3.1, 95, or NT), I couldn't test it on my Macintosh. The authors of the chapters are a mix of university researchers, innovators from industry, and a few carefully-selected experts from instrument companies, who avoid the temptation to promote their own products. For example, the STM/AFM chapter was written by Huub Salemink of the IBM labs in Zurich, where the technique was pioneered. Although I don't want to slight any of the excellent authors who contributed chapters, some areas are truly outstanding texts in their own right. Ron Majors' discussion of organic sample preparation is as thorough as readers of his LC*GC columns would expect. Robert Megargle covers LIMS with the knowledge of many years as user and observer. Defining categories for the overlapping techniques of analytical chemistry is always a challenge. Settle wisely avoided the traditional choice of categorization by underlying physical principles and grouped them according to logical applications. The result includes some based on the instrument types (separation methods, for example) and others on broad application areas (polymer analysis). While purists might fret over this organization, in fact, it makes for easy access, without having to shuffle through the whole book to gather information on a specific analysis. In a single volume covering fields that are often evolving rapidly, there are bound to be a few omissions. The ones I noted were: near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, which has become so important recently; microscopy other than SPM, especially the analytical use of electron microscopes (SEM and TEM); better discussions of time-of-flight and ion trap mass spec; ion sources other than ESI for LC-MS; microwave ovens used for digestion and extraction of inorganic samples (Majors covers its use in organic extraction); flow injection (and segmented-flow) analysis; arc-spark emission spectrometers (mentioned in passing). To really pick nits, there was no mention of solid phase microextraction (SPME) or of specialized analyzers such as CHN, TOC, BOD, or systems for Hg, CN, or S analysis. At the same time, it includes a chapter on the truly exotic and rare technique of atomic fluorescence. Any manageable text will overlook some methods and cover some obscure favorites; this criticism is hardly fatal. Any book on an evolving technology is a snapshot in time and will fairly quickly become dated. The newest techniques have already gone beyond the descriptions in their chapters. This text, nevertheless, will be an excellent introduction to analytical instrument techniques for some years, even if the published prices and suppliers' names may age. I hope some of the more enlightened professors of instrumental analysis will use it as a text; their students will emerge as better analytical chemists. It will certainly help me better understand the techniques I survey each month. Excerpted with permission from Analytical Consumer, Jo Rita Jordan, Editor and Publisher

Make it end!.......2007-10-02
This book was highly recommended by a number of my book group members who were excited about re-reading it. I was really looking forward to the book. After the first couple of pages, I felt like it would never end.
The characters are flat, and the dialogue is unrealistic. The story is devoid of plot or character development. NOTHING actually happens throughout the entire "story". Ugh! My friends told me that the book made them laugh and cry. I didn't laugh once...didn't even come close: just read over and over again about a group of women laughing and laughing. WHAT were they laughing about?? The book didn't make me cry either, except to cry out, "Dear God, make it end!" (Does that qualify as a religious experience?) Ms. Radish confuses meaningful with maudlin, and insight with inane when it comes to writing. After successfully forcing myself to finish the book, my next challenge is to come up with a tactful way to express myself at the next book group meeting.
What a way to go!.......2007-09-18
Beautifully written, I was drawn in immediately and loved the whole trip! I had gotten this from the library but after reading it bought a copy to share with my daughter, sister, mom and nieces. It is just too good to keep to yourself. I want to read everything Kris Radish has ever written!
Too tedious.......2007-09-02
This is a great concept, and maybe I'm just not old enough to appreciate this story, but I didn't care for the author's writing style. I don't find it unrealistic that these women would not know of so many places and events in Annie's life, as some people are just very good at compartmentalizing bits of their life. I think this is the point of the story, discovering these pieces of Annie's life, which then lead to self-discovery. However, these new acquaintances get along just a little too well for me.
Some of the surprises the women encounter are unexpected, but I found it disconcerting the way the author would tediously go over and over one event or conversation and then suddenly skip ahead in just a few sentences. Why was what happened in between irrelevant? I found myself wanting more at some times, and less at others.
I enjoyed the stories of how each woman came to know Annie, but the development of the story goes down hill from there. The characters are a bit predicatable and sugary, and their actions and speech didn't always seem natural or realistic to me. The emotions and revelations were overly dramatic, and their mannerisms a bit forced. The author had no problem giving each woman individuality and a realistic sense of emotion when writing in the "thought book." It's too bad this wasn't carried over into the rest of their personalities.
The concept of this idea is fantastic, but the story droned on a little too long for me.
Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral.......2007-08-13
Just started this book and because of other reads, I know I'm going to enjoy this one....Keep writing Kris Radish....You give us HOPE!!!
Fab idea that just doesn't work.......2007-05-26
Before dying, Annie Freeman makes meticulous [and surprise] plans for five of her closest friends to take her ashes on a traveling funeral. The friends, who have never met one another prior to the trip, scatter Annie's ashes at various places which were very important parts of her life. Incredible idea for a story that just didn't make for a good read. The book stresses over [and over...and over]what close friends these women were to Annie. Maybe I'm picky but if that's the case, then why didn't these women - at least one of them here and there - know about any of these important places in Annie's life? After awhile it was like they were on a trip spreading ashes of a total stranger, not someone who they were incredibly close to. At each stop, instead of recalling Annie's connection to the location, they were always wondering why Annie would want her ashes there, what the place had meant to their friend, had their friend ever been there, what were they going to learn about her, etc. etc. They continually professed what fantastic friends they were of Annie's, but it seems to me they hardly knew the woman at all. At one point a character - a relative along one of the funeral stops - actually makes that remark, wondering aloud why Annie had never brought any of the friends there before or had spoken about the place. Uh, yah - I was left asking myself the same thing. Lots of over-drama, too, as if the entire book was leaning backwards, back of the hand pressed to the forehead, saying Oh! nobody understands, nobody can possibly understand. Like other readers I ended up skimming many pages, just wanting to see where the whole thing would end up. Bummer of a trip, since the idea is such a cool one.
