Book Description
Praise for The Manager's Guide to Financial Statement Analysis
"The Manager's Guide to Financial Statement Analysis opens the door for both financial and nonfinancial managers to develop a framework for understanding a company's true financial performance. The Manager's Guide goes the extra step by providing the reader with the skills necessary to communicate the impact of a firm's financial measures in a nontraditional, easy-to-understand manner. It is this combination of understanding and effective communication that allows the manager to then improve a firm through the use of financial information."-Christopher D. Flick, Investment Manager, The Vanguard Group
"The Manager's Guide to Financial Statement Analysis has helped me in both my personal (investing) and professional (management) lives. The authors unravel the complexities of financial statements so that the information they contain can be easily digested and exploited. There is no more hiding a company's strategy behind a set of financial statements. I keep this book close at hand!"-Steven I. Glusman, Chief Engineer, Comanche Helicopter Program, Boeing Rotorcraft Program Management Center
"A valuable framework for communicating firm results and aligning managers around common goals. The methodology links the information contained in a company's financial statements with its external market performance in a format that is easily understandable by the different functional managers of any company."-Scott Teeter, The LTC Group
Customer Reviews:
A real mixed bag.......2004-04-08
By "manager," the authors appear to mean "someone who is not financially literate." Although this book does a good job of explaining how to analyze financial statements, I was disappointed that it didn't really contain a practical manager's perspective. Instead, this book is just like many others -- it does a credible job from an academic perspective of explaining financial statements and their use. Don't expect to learn much about applying this to your job as a manager or as a small business professional.
Chart your way to positively impact your company's value........1999-05-19
This is an ingenious guide to understanding not only the key concepts of financial statement analyis, but also the levers at the disposal of managers which they can and should employ to proactively improve shareholder value in their firm. The charting methodology the authors have designed is not difficult, but it is nonetheless quite illustrative and well structured. I am using the book to teach a class of forty MBA students from many different countries, and I have found that each chapter fits into a one and a half hour lecture and discussion session very comfortably. From the students' feedback as well as my own background as a former Chief Financial Officer, I am certain that this book will be a valuable tool in any reader's management career.
Helped develop an excellent financial foundation for non-fin.......1999-05-14
"The Manager's Guide to Financial Statement Analysis" helped develop an excellent financial foundation for me, as a non-financial professional. Reading it wasn't about getting the math correct, it was about telling the story of a company through careful analysis of a company's financial statements. Where once I glided over dollar amounts and percentages, I now read and understand where they come from and what they represent. Since most professionals are responsible for budgets and are likely to be stakeholders in some business or another, it is imperative to have a broad based understanding of financial statement analysis, this is where The Manager's Guide fits in.
A worthy effort, but ultimately too basic to be very useful........1998-08-04
This is a basic text for those who have a limited understanding of financial statements and don't intend to learn a whole lot more. The authors provide a user-friendly visual method to relate to abstract figures. Unfortunately, the reader isn't assumed to have acquired additional command of the subject as he reads through the book. This causes the later chapters to drag since the pace hasn't picked up much from the introduction.
The book is marred by some poor technical proofreading (charts with missing data, erroneous dates, etc), but that was a minor annoyance. I was discouraged, though, by the lack of practical applicability -- don't expect to learn much about how to diagnose company problems or strengths at manager level. This book best serves as a primer for those who want to read more about how to perform useful analysis of a company.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Network interview questions.......2004-08-05
This is an excellent text for any IT manager. I was impressed with the coverage for the pre-interview stages and how you can identify those job candidates that are most-likely-to-succeed in the job role.
Better still, I was impressed with the job interview questions. They are designed for a telephone interview, and the IT manager can just ask the questions and compare the responses to the "ideal" answer.
Overall, this book is a real timesaver for anyone hiring a Cisco or Ethernet Network Engineer.

Book Description
Plastics are everywhere. Bags, bank cards, bottles, and even boats can all be made of this celebrated but much-maligned material. Yet most of us know next to nothing about plastics. We do know that they are practical and cheap--but they also represent a huge environmental problem, for they literally take ages to decompose. In this engaging book, E.S. Stevens tells us everything we have always wondered about plastics and of the efforts, in America, Europe, and Asia, to develop a new breed of environmentally friendly plastics. He points to a possible future where plastics will no longer be made of petroleum, but of plants.
The first two chapters assess the increased use of plastics as a relatively new alternative to other materials. The third chapter introduces us to their impact on the environment and strategies for their disposal or recycling. The next two chapters cover basic concepts and terms used in polymer sciences and provide some basic chemistry. With these fundamentals in tow, the author compares how petroleum-based and biological polymers are made, and the various ways in which they decompose. He acquaints readers with the emerging technologies, their commercial viability, and their future. Finally, instructions are given for preparing basic bioplastics using readily available materials.
Nonspecialists will find Green Plastics a concise introduction to this exciting interdisciplinary topic--an introduction otherwise not available. For students it provides easy entry to an area of science with wide appeal and current importance; for teachers, excellent background reading for courses in various sciences. The prospect of depleted fossil fuel supplies, and the potential benefits of bioplastics to the environment and to rural areas that could supply the raw materials, make this book a compelling presentation of a subject whose time has come.

Book Description
There is currently a great deal of interest in carbohydrate research among chemists and biologists, in both academic and industrial laboratories. One reason is the involvement of oligosaccharide molecules in many recognition phenomena in the living world. Another reason is the growing demand for chiral synthesissugars are an amazingly cheap source of chirality but must be efficiently processed. Thirdly the role of conformation in carbohydrate interactions has stimulated much experimental and theoretical work. There are causal links between advances in each of these fields, from molecular orbitals to immunochemistry, so that no research worker in his narrow specialisation can afford to ignore what is going on elsewhere. Thus a body of knowledge has been built from what is now called the 'glycosciences'. This book attempts to describe glycosciences in their true perspective. Organic chemistry is the backbone of the presentation, but carbohydrate chemistry offers a wealth of supramolecular associations. This book is unique, among similar texts on carbohydrates, in that half its content is devoted to the description of important examples of such interactions. The opening chapters deal with the problems of configuration, conformation, derivatization, and modifications of monosaccharides, with examples on their utilization in total synthesis. The anomeric effectthe most popular of all stereoelectronic effects, and a gift to carbohydrate chemists and chemists in generalis discussed at length. The following chapters deal with oligosaccharides; the essentials of enzymic synthesis, with its high performances; and the sialic acids, which are at the forefront of carbohydrate research. The author describes recognition reactions, including blood group phenomena, interactions involving sialic acids, the active site of heparin, tumour markers, and selectins. The association of sugars with small molecules, notably with inorganic species, is the subject of another chapter. Throughout the book, great attention has been given to practical details especially in the description of experiments involving unfamiliar techniques. Many tables, figures, diagrams, experimental protocols and a survey of the literature up to March 1996 will help the reader to understand the salient facts and visualize a broad spectrum of ideas.

Book Description
The first edition of this book was the first to provide an integrated description of sap ascension from an anatomical and functional point of view. The second edition opens with the three-dimensional aspects of wood anatomy. The cohesion-tension theory and new evidence are introduced in response to recent controversies over the mechanism of sap ascent in plants. The physiology, anatomy and biophysics of xylem dysfunction are discussed and new insights into hydraulic architecture are reviewed with special emphasis on physiological limits on maximum transpiration and how hydraulic architecture limits gas exchange, carbon gain and growth of plants. The text concludes with a description of xylem failure and pathology. The book highlights fascinating areas of current research with the aim to stimulate more work in the future.

Book Description
Problems, problems, problems! All Mike Harmon ever wanted to be was a SEAL. But after problems in the teams, college student was a decent second best. However, trouble seemed to follow him where he went. Now, after having angered every terrorist on Earth and at least five governments, buying a farm in a third world country was looking pretty good. Of course, nothing was ever simple. With Chechen terrorists knocking on the door and tenant farmers with a truly Byzantine culture, the question was whether he could drag the keldara into the 21st century before the Chechen put them back in the 6th. Kildar answers the question: Where would an international security specialist and former SEAL choose to retire-if he's going to buy the farm, it should be one with beautiful women and the best beer in the world. Valhalla on Earth complete with Vikings.

Good Read and Better than Ghost.......2007-09-04
Good Story and a bit less over the top than Ghost. I would probably recommend this book over Ghost just because it is a better read. The Sex is still there but less in your face than in the first.
If you are a Ringo fan as I am and were put off by Ghost, read this one. Remember it is still in the Mac Bolan, The Destroyer and as someone else mentioned John Carter (Except no Mars)
The Ghost decides to come out of retirement - with dangerous results........2007-09-03
John Ringo's KILDAR tells of Mike, who has always wanted to be a SEAL, but who is currently hated by every terrorist on Earth and many governments. Facing danger, the Ghost decides to come out of retirement - with dangerous results.
Seriously..........2007-08-08
None of you giving more than 1 star review can't be serious, can you? There is absolutely nothing in this mass of drivel which is even remotely compelling.
I get the fact that Ringo is into SOF fanboy fiction, with Jenkins being wealthy, an awe-inspiring warrior, and a sexual dynamo, but at least make a story out of it, Old Boy.
Firstly, Kildar is never in a difficult situation that he can't wave some money at or make a convenient phone call to solve. Isn't the first tenant of storytelling is the hero in a tight spot and has to work his way out?
Next, the dialogue is forced. Not only does Jenkins communicate with the natives in their own dialect in seemingly a matter of days with perfection, but he's using expressions that a clan of people basically out of the 15th century wouldn't even comprehend.
Additionally, there is only a smattering of action at page 440 of a 460 page book. Yep. Basically, you've just read an entire tome about a guy buying a castle, meeting the natives, financing some farming operations, setting up his personal harem, putting together the A-Team and ... nothing.
Lastly, there is not sub-plot or interesting twist. Just a linear omnipotent narration. Pretty boring really.
Edgar Rice Burroughs fantasies for adult males.......2007-07-22
My dad bought this book and I read it and generally liked the story. Ringo is entertaining. This series is sort of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars series for adult males. Meaning, in the Mars series the women were subjugated, the men, all masculine, and it appealed perfectly to the juvenile male.
This series appeals perfectly to the adult male, in general. It is the Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars series for adults because of the sex. First the book is a fantasy, Navy seal with 30 million bucks gets cooperation from the local governments and the US govt whenever he needs it; he gets a harem and then finds, very conveniently, a harem manager through a connection in another country. The female harem mgr. loves rough sex and is a fantasy woman in every way, submissive, sexually compliant and inventive, etc. The hero is able to have sex for hours at a time, the girl loves to be beaten and dominated. You get the picture.
Take all that out or minimize it and you have the same plot with a less juvenile approach to life.
I will, no doubt, be criticized for complaining about the sex, so be it, it won't be the first time. The sex and sexual content and stereotypes of women are not needed. Second, even if it were needed, the typically juvenile way that the protagonist's sex partners are portrayed are off the charts stereotypical fantasy women, playboy playmates come to life as it were to make the the fantasies they inspire come true.
The story itself is a 4, the stereotypical way the sexuality and the protagonist's sex partners are handled rate it a 1 or 2, so a total compromise score is 3.
An other good read from John Ringo.......2007-06-30
Not quite as "over the top" as the previous novel, "Ghost", but I look forward to reading the next book in this military fiction series.
