Book Description

An essential guide to financial risk management as well as the only way to ace the GARP FRM Exam
The Financial Risk Management Exam (FRM Exam) was developed by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) as a means of establishing an industry standard of minimum professional competence in the field. It is given annually in November for risk professionals who want to earn FRM certification. Authored by renowned financial risk management guru Phillipe Jorion, with the full support of the GARP, this is the definitive guide for those preparing to take the FRM Exam. With the help of questions (and solutions) taken from previous exams, Jorion coaches readers on quantitative methods, capital markets, and market, credit, operational, and risk management concepts and assessment techniques. In addition to being the indispensable guide for those aspiring to FRM certification, Financial Risk Manager Handbook also serves as a valued working reference for risk professionals.
Phillipe Jorion, PhD (Irvine, CA), is a Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Management at UC Irvine. He has also taught at Columbia University, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the University of British Columbia.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A True Bible of Risk Management.......2005-04-08

Having worked on several risk management projects on Wall Street for years, I must admit that this is the best and most comprehensive book on the topic. It covers all the main areas of risk management (market, credit, operational) and saves you countless hours of looking for definitions and derivations of key risk management concepts (not everything is on Google, or at least not yet).

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-07-31

This book is billed as the "official reference book for GARP's FRM certification program" and "ideal for self instruction and in-house training".

Unfortunately, it falls short on both scores. It is definitely not a book for someone with a basic level of knowledge. Nor does it really seem to be written for the intermediate risk manager/practitioner.

Dr. Jorion undertook a rather ambitious and perhaps thankless task with this book. The subject is quite extensive. There is probably no one person with all the required in-depth knowledge to write the entire book. So there were bound to be areas of weakness. It also appears that he had scant assistance with the book, which placed an enormous burden on him.

As well, the book lacks a consistent pedagogical focus. It is not pitched to the basic student or to the intermediate level practitioner but seems to wander between the two. And therefore is probably not an ideal text for either audience.

If it is intended as a textbook for in-house training or preparation for the FRM exam, then it should be written at a much more basic level with careful ordering of the presentation of the material and fuller explanations rather than the text's at times elliptical and terse ones. For an example of a shortcoming in presentation, in the section on option pricing, the book discusses the Merton derivation (for income generating "underlyings") of the Black Scholes model and then presents a detailed example of the Black Scholes model. It would be more helpful to reverse the order and go from the simpler to the more complex.

Other areas for improvement are the section on statistics, probability, etc. These are at the heart of modern risk management. Sometimes the descriptions seem too terse to convey the material. The tables on the "moments" could be improved by including the denominator to show the exact formula for their calculation.

Notwithstanding the above, there is some very good material in the book - thematic comments on risk management and interactions between various risks and instruments. This "big picture" analysis is good. The discussion of "moments" is well organized though there is a shortcoming in the tables - the denominators are missing and so the student doesn't see the exact formula for each. However, as outlined above, without more detail and more structured presentation, the book's utility for the basic level student is diminished.

One would expect to see more evidence of a strong editor's hand from a book published under Wiley Finance imprint. It is a little acknowledged fact that most authors rely on an editor to catch mistakes and to ensure that the book stays on message. The author's task is even more daunting when preparing such a technical book. And the editor's role then even more critical.

There are some obvious errors in the book. For example, missing information in the sample question 11.4 on page 254. Poor spacing in the answer key to that question on page 260- where the square root of time and the 99% standard deviation factors are conflated. As well, the explanation of the solution could have been expanded to explain exactly what these factors represented and why they were used. This is very important in a basic training book. Also there are several extraneous words between two sentences on the top of page 291. These and others not mentioned here seem to be obvious catches.

Since the subject matter is so extensive and since this is a GARP official publication, GARP should consider enlisting several authors, each of whom could address areas of his/her expertise. Dr. Jorion then could serve as the senior author - providing the logical architecture to link sections together and highlight critical dependencies and linkages. That would improve the book materially.

Tales are a potent force in human consciousness. Margaret Parkin demonstrates how this holds true in organizations, and how stories can serve to crystallize and carry important business messages and themes.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Helpful but not essential.......2000-03-30

This book was helpful, and the stories were relevant, but I have found personal experiences and those of others in the business to be much more practical in training sessions.

4 out of 5 stars A reference tool for educators........2000-03-19

Storytelling is an ancient method of communicating vital information/knowledge from person to person, generation to generation. Tales for Trainers is an easily read book that invites the reader to reconsider stories as a tool to facilitate the learning process. Parkin provides an overview of storytelling and its purpose throughout the years in teaching, sharing and documenting knowledge/information with audiences/learners. In addition, the author provides an anthology of 50 tales with references for reflection and use. The book is a useful tool to generate ideas that will capture and engage learners.

Of most significance is the guidance that the author provides the reader in developing, analyzing, practicing and delivering the story towards an effective learning experience. The implications that it has for trainers and educators are significant. Learning styles are varied and developing learning experiences to meet the varied styles can be difficult and time consuming. Stories and storytelling demands activity from both sides of the brain and requires learners and storytellers to use the entire brain to process the story and associated lesson. Educators can also use stories to assist their learners in understanding abstract concepts by linking a story that is relevant to their own life experience. In addition, storytelling utilizes assimilation and structurizing to assist the learner in obtaining a more tangible grasp of abstract concepts.

Relating my reading to brain research, the author points out that listening to a story is a very natural method of reducing our brain activity and thus increasing the receptiveness to learning. This effect on the brain should guide educators to use storytelling as a tool that allows the brain to ready itself for new thoughts and ideas. As an educator, it allows me to "set the stage" for learning experiences and shape the learning environment into an inviting, non-threatening opportunity for learners.

"The power of storytelling lies in the fact that in listening to the content, our conscious mind is occupied, leaving our unconscious mind open to directly receive the underlying message or moral. As storytellers, we must be aware of this power, and ensure that the stories we tell have a positive effect on our listeners."(pg. 33)

I would recommend this book for trainers, secondary and post-secondary educators as a resource tool.

5 out of 5 stars The 2nd British Invasion.......2000-01-30

Margaret Parkin has provided the Training World a fabulous resource! This book is one of my most prized in my possession. Margaret has organized a matrix to locate relevant tales to topics in training (e.g. leadership). Buy this book!

    Book Description

THE BEAUTY OF THE BEASTS is a chronicle of many years Ralph Helfer spent as a Hollywood animal behaviorist, and is full of behind–the–scenes accounts of the many television programs and films in which Helfer's animals appeared, including Charlie's Angels and The Ten Commandments, and the stars he and his animals worked with such as Elvis Presley, Clint Eastwood, and Marilyn Monroe. But this is more than a story of the famous, both four and two–legged –– it's also about the important roles animals play in our lives, and how much less human we would be without them.

This is an instant smash-hit for any Buffalo Bills fan. Longtime Bills trainer "Abe" takes readers through his career in quick fashion -- almost as if you're sharing a beer and a beef on weck with him at a local Buffalo eatery. And like one of Western New York's best treats (a beef on weck), this book doesn't give you any fluff -- this is all meat! Abe provides anecdote after anecdote, giving you an inside look at his remarkable career with the Bills. This is a wonderful look at the Bills players, coaches and teams.

Who are we? How did we come to be? What is our fate? These have always been our ultimate questions. Genet provides up-to-date scientific answers. Our nearest relatives, the chimpanzees, provide a biological baseline for pre-civilized humanity, while the highly organized ants - especially those involved in herding and farming - give a point of departure for civilized humanity. How did a few chimpanzees in East Africa become the most widespread large mammal on the planet? Drawing from the latest findings in anthropology, archeology, and history, Genet charts the evolutionary development and sudden rise to dominance of the planet's only primarily cultural species and their machine partners. Our future? Genet details four possibilities: (1) Grossly overextended and still accelerating, we will soon crash head on into the brick wall of planetary finiteness. (2) Although experiencing a few minor adjustments as the planet transits from the genetic to the cultural era, we (or our robotic "mind children") will eventually dominate the galaxy. (3) By limiting our population to only twenty billion, we will continue as biological superstars -- sustainable hogs with a record-breaking, single-species share of the planetary pie. (4) Realizing that ant-like togetherness isn't our thing, we will chimpishly rebel against being mere stepping stones to robots. Should we return to the Garden of Eden, we'll never forget what almost happened to the chimpanzees who would be ants.

Do the Windows Open? is a smashing debut by short-story writer Julie Hecht. Bound together by the insight and wit of her neurotic narrator, Hecht's short stories document the mania of the modern day in devastating detail. Hecht's narrator, a forty-something photographer, moves through the world burdened by the mundane and tawdry incidentals of contemporary existence. Taking in fertility clinics, hairpieces, obnoxious speech patterns and omnipresent consumer demographics, nothing escapes her eye or avoids her comment. The intelligence of her judgment negates the inanity of much of what she sees, and her stories become a tragicomic critique of her affluent and stifling social milieu.

                    Book Description

Do the Windows Open? is a series of hilarious linked tales documenting the mania of the modern day in devastating detail-tales that have had readers of The New Yorker laughing out loud for years. The beguiling and alienated narrator-who finds nearly everything interesting and almost nothing clear-has set herself the never-ending goal of photographing a world-renowned reproductive surgeon, Walden Pond, the ponds of Nantucket, and all the houses Anne Sexton ever lived in. On the way, she searches for organically grown vegetables, windows that open, and an endodontist who acts like a normal person. She sometimes compares herself unfavorably to Jacqueline Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and Princess Diana. What emerges is a unique sensibility under siege. This is a remarkably original literary performance, one that speaks to anyone looking for the refuge laughter offers from life in an absurd world.

5 out of 5 stars Her short story about Elvis.......2007-06-24

My introduction to Ms. Hecht was a short story she wrote titled "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You." It's a chronicle of her infatuation with Elvis (often mentioned in "Do the Windows Open?") and an alternative riff on Elvis's untimely, undignified death. It was published in the O. Henry Prize Stories of 1978. Find it if you can.

                    1 out of 5 stars Dreadful.......2005-08-29

Awful, unfunny, poorly written. The book's sole redeeming quality is its pretty cover.
Can't imagine why there was a sequel. Can't bear to imagine how bad her Andy Kaufman book must be.
                    Yuck.

2 out of 5 stars Danger: Whining Ahead.......2005-04-17

I bought this book based on the title story which I had previously read in The New Yorker Magazine's anthology of New York stories. The title story is really good but, overall, the book is a "2". Do the Windows Open? was a light-hearted, amusing and imaginative read; one could easily imagine having panic attacks while riding on a bus from Manhattan to the Hamptons with a load of strangers. To pass time during the long trip via the Long Island Espressway, (scary in itself), Hecht assigns imaginary personalities and lifestories to fellow passengers. The attendant feelings of being trapped with an assorted busload of strangers is where the author's creativity shines. In fact, it is laugh out loud funny. I wish Hecht could have continued along this path. However, the rest of the book goes from engagingly quirky to whiny...

Hecht writes archly about her macrobiotic lifestyle and makes judgmental observations about everyone who doesn't share her addiction to twig tea and brown rice. It's hard to feel the pain of a privileged, super neurotic wife of a university dean of architecture. The author hasn't much to do except take exercise classes, have expensive sunglasses reproduced in Germany, or bear the torment of the summer heat as she wilts in Manhattan, East Hampton or Nantucket, while fitfully photographing flowers and doctors. Why does she bother to see a reproductive specialist when the reader never gets a hint that Hecht even likes children? That is a question only her therapist can answer.

                    1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Appaling.......2003-07-16

this book is SAD... not funny at all
from the very first sentence, i wanted to stop reading it, but unfortunately, it's like watching a car crash, or picking at a scab, you know its going to hurt, mentally and physically, but somehow, you just have to keep at it
the main character in this book is one of the saddest stereotypes of a new york woman i have ever ever read about
she makes the women from sex and the city look as smart as katherine hepburn
she has more mental problems than anyone i've ever met here, i mean, this woman can only be in the city if it's below 40degrees?
everyone she sees with blue eyes is an anti-semite??
she can only ride a freaking bus by being doped up on xanax???
and she feels guitly by assisting in the cooking of someone else's meat dinner.... jeez... who IS this person??
why would any intelligent human being strive to create a fictional character this loathesome?
i certainly pray that i never meet a real person like this, UGH! i think i would need a xanax just to deal with HER!
there's not a single plausabile character trait to her!
sad, just an incredibly sad book

1 out of 5 stars One of the Worst Books Ever.......2002-03-12

I read a lot of books and this is really one of the worst I have ever read. There is no plot, no likeable characters and no point. I will admit, there were a rare few sentences that made me smile because I suppose they were mildly ammusing, but over all this book was a complete bore. I couldn't wait to finish it so I could start something worthwhile. I would only recommend this book if you would like to read about a completely confused and neurotic woman who needs some serouis mental help.

                            Book Description

What do you find on the Moon? Lift the flap and find an astronaut. Kids find a cat snoozing under a blanket, a ghost hiding in a suit of armor, and more picture quizzes. In Open the Little Windows books, sturdy board pages show simple, brightly colored illustrations of objects that very young children recognize. Each illustration features a cardboard flap for kids to open and find a new object that had been hiding in the picture. As they open these little windows, they develop their powers of observation, and discover new ways in which different objects relate to each other. (Ages 2-4)
