This is the first book that really explains IFRS very well. The examples are understandable, it's comprehensive and helps on nearly every issue that might arise when dealing with IFRS.

O'Regan an inspiration to all Auditors.......2003-08-06

O'Regan's book is an inspiration to read, in the office or in your leisure. A 'must have' for auditors embarking on international assignments. A breath of fresh air for auditing books normally associated with endless jargon and complex terminology. This book has completely transformed my image of global auditing, so much so, that I aim to adventure into the world of international auditing very soon.

A truely inspirational read. The chapters are juxtaposed with succintness and clear, precise, useful, practical information.
This is one of the first books I've seen in its genre - unique.
As an experience 'travelling' global auditor I found this book invaluable, it is definitely useful reference material for the spectrum of audit staff from Audit Directors to the juniors on their first field audit. I have passed this book down to all my colleagues as basic training material.

At last - a book on auditing that combines verve, panache, and a mountain of useful information. I have been an avid follower of O'Regan's writing for several years - his classy articles and IIA books have been a constant companion in my professional life as an auditor. He seems sometimes to be leading a one-man crusade to lift auditing writing out of its generally stuffy doldrums and onto a higher plane.

"International Auditing" is O'Regan's best achievement to date, and the intellectual self-confidence that underpins it is almost breathtaking. Who else would dare to undertake, in one book, all of the following: a history of auditing in its various forms, guidance on international risks, advice on logistics and safety, and a detailed country guide that covers economics, politics, history, and demographics? In my opinion the country guides are worth the price of the book alone, and are a pleasure to read.

In summary, my message to O'Regan is "Well done!" More, please...

This book is right on the money. For each description of co-worker I could identify at least one person I have worked with who fit the bill spot-on. Sometimes it was so true it was sad, but mostly it was just hilarious. It makes you wonder; "what kind of co-worker am I???"

Deg Lasdio has really hit a nerve, or should I say funny bone, with this hilarious sendup of all those people who drive us crazy at work, wherever that may happen to be. Everyone will recognize most of these types, and the short format of the descriptions make the book perfect for brief bursts of reading. It's hard to read surreptitiously, though, because howling with laughter occurs all too often. The acronyms, nicknames and the fun illustrations really added to my enjoyment of this charming and wickedly perceptive book.

Striking Persepective on Work .......2005-11-30

This book definitely captures the pain inherent in, and the uncertainty and outright absurdity of, work relationships. If you have ever felt like a fish out of water in any aspect of your life this book will resonate with you and make you consider your priorities. A must read for any unhappy worker!

Not so deviant, it's surprisingly sane. . ........2005-11-29

I wasn't sure how to approach it at first - but it's true, it's just like work, everything is coming at you - the haikus, footnotes, bullet points. If your're expecting to read a book line-by-line, from front to back - this is not for you. After I got used to it, I just went for the ride and enjoyed it.

Anything you might be feeling at work but could not put into words, I found here. Sometimes a little warped, but a truth nonetheless. With the humor on top of it, it was any easy read and I looked forward to the asides.

If you are disgruntled and need to remove yourself from your situation for a moment, just settle in on a few pages. I would especially recommend this book to anyone who is just starting to work. It would save a few years of grief.

Someone who knows about work.......2005-11-29

I had a lot of fun reading this book. The writer describes every kind of coworker with accurate detail. The writing is easy and the book can be read over and over. I especially got a kick out of the many haikus. This book will make a great gift and will cheer up any disgruntled worker. I found it refreshing that there is someone out there who knows how the work environment can be.

The chapters in this volume deal with four fields with deep historical roots that remain active areas reasearch: partial differential equations, variational methods, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics. Too much varied subjects for such a small book!.......2000-04-19

A group of Matemathical Researchers of several Universties of the World, disciples and friends of Professor James Serrin (one of the best developers of "Rational Mechanics" along with C. Truesdell, W. Noll, N.A. Toupin and R. S. Rivling just to mention a few), compiled some of their works in a book to honor Professor Serrin for his 65th birthday. Even when the book's content is interesting since deals with Nonlinear Analysis, it lacks the "Classic Approach" of the Continuum Mechanics that just Professor Serrin could impregnate to it. At the beggining of the book a list of J. Serrin's papers is shown as well as an unique paper of him at the end of the book which is not enough to me by considering the title of the book. Now I am aware that I misunderstood the second title of the book: "Papers for the 65th Birthday of James Serrin" which I thought it meant: "Collected Papers for the 65th Birthday of James Serrin".

Hilarious Nuclear Insecurity.......2007-09-02

The Leaky Establishment is a story spun from Dave Langford's experiences working at a British nuclear research establishment in the 1970s. Protagonist Roy Tappen is like a Wooster with no Jeeves to save him as Langford turns the nuclear research center into a goldmine of laughs.

Roy Tappen borrows a filing cabinet from work to use at home and unknowingly also takes home a plutonium warhead. He spends the rest of the book trying to infiltrate the warhead back where it belongs without Security or his boss discovering it ever left the facility. Tappen soon explains why his warhead in its aluminum jacket is no more dangerous than a lot of household items. From then on Langford is free to treat the plutonium core like any of the other humorous icons whose appearance at the right moment in the story is good for a chuckle. Jokes are set up and triggered in the deft Langford style, at the pace of about a joke per paragraph.

The Leaky Establishment is invested with all the delightful characteristics of Langford's writing, the flair for lucid prose found in writers from Bob Shaw to C.S. Lewis, lots of sophisticated wordplay, and inspired leaps between high-brow and low-brow humor.

Langford's best book.......2007-08-27

This is David Langford's best book to date (and that's saying something!) With his usual wit and humour, he has accurately captured both the spirit of the Cold War and the bureaucracy of the Civil Service in the 1970s and 80s. The characters are recognisable to us all, and the situations they get into are both true to life and side-splittingly funny.

If you've already got this book, you should get it down from the shelf and re-read it. If you haven't - well, what are you waiting for?

BECAUSE I can't give it zero stars.......2004-09-12

A dull, boring book. Terry Pratchett wrote an introduction, saying in it "This was the book I wanted to write!". Perhaps he should reconsider.

A bet is made at a nuclear power plant. Swipe the filing cabinets. The man takes them home, and find that a misplaced war head is in the files.

He was going take it back,BUT the very next day, the rules for going in and out of the plant have been upgraded and made more stringent.

A really contrived plot.

There are some funny lines, but the characters are so dull and flat that there's no concern for any of them. I watched the ceiling a lot whie reading this title. It was more interesting.

Langford can write, but the whole book is not worth the effort to seek out his good lines.

Funny.... and scary.......2003-01-16

Roy Tappen works for a (thankfully, fictional) nuclear weapons facility in the UK. He fights bureaucracy while trying to use it for his purpose, which is to undo the potentially disasterous results of a practical joke gone wrong.

What's scary is it looks so real, so familiar, to those of us who have dealt with government facilities.

It has a surprise resolution that is rather poetical.

Curses! Long after we'd abandoned hope of a reprint, and barely 12 weeks after I'd splashed out on a used - signed, no less - first edition, this imprint inexplicably appears!

Don't get me wrong: it's a pretty funny book. Set around the aptly-named "Robinson Heath" bomb lab (a blatant send-up of AWRE Aldermaston, where the author once worked), it recounts the exploits of scientist Roy Tappen who accidentally takes the fissile part of his work home one night and struggles to smuggle it back inside the fence. In the process, Langford shines the harsh light of satire on the secretive and cowering creatures of the Scientific Civil Service.

The plot is far-fetched (luckily), and the story mashes in a fair few in-jokes, such as place names, which mean that you can probably knock half a star off the rating if you haven't worked at Aldermaston and another half if you don't know the area. Shame to see the laser getting only one throwaway gag though, since it's such a multi-billion dollar save-the-earth project in the US and France now.

Langford's style a bit glib and teenaged (maybe he was still gloating at his escape?) but it rattles along quite nicely. But the best part has got to be the wonderfully succinct caricatures of inmates in UK Government labs: a must for anyone who's had to deal with them.

What's puzzling is the timing: Aldermaston was privatised in the early 1990s, so this tale isn't really a hard-hitting topical parody any more. In fact, the place is overdue for a sequel: trendy new management styles etc bred new stereotypes, and the funnier old ones, like the industrial-rate smokers, have gone. Also a pity that Langford didn't include some of the more timeless anecdotes from the "old days", such as the day the guards found that a hundred yards of the fence had been stolen, the guard who (while practising quick draws to while the night away) shot himself in the foot, the dreadful hostel "Boundary Hall" with its wing of 1950s originals still in residence (known in the 1980s as "Death Row") and which was double-glazed throughout - the month before it was demolished.

But overall, a good book. Nice to see it back in print!
