4 out of 5 stars Good resource for the beginning and intermediate motivator.......1998-07-28

There are alot of very commonplace activities in this book (like "potluck lunch" and "the rev-up session"). But there are also sufficient gems that make it (particularly at this price) a good resource. Beginning and intermediate team motivators will find it particularly useful in providing creative ways to motivate their group. The format is easily understandable with the sub-headings they provide. Definitely worth looking at.

Each naturally occurring isotope contributes to the history of matter by having its own special role in cosmic evolution. This volume elucidates the origins of our material world by looking at the abundance of the elements and their isotopes, and how this is interpreted within the theory of nucleosynthesis. Each isotope of elements from Hydrogen to Gallium is covered in detail. The book will be suitable for astronomers, physicists, chemists, geologists and planetary scientists, and contains a glossary of essential technical terms.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for anyone involved in nuclear astrophysics.......2007-09-19

This book is easily one of the most useful books in regard to nuclear astrophysics. While the chapters have very repetitive structure and wording, this fits very well with the books namesake of a handbook, rather than a work which is meant to be read straight through.

While this book lacks many technical details, it is, to my knowledge, the only qualitative book on nuclear astrophysics, focusing on the connection of ideas in simple language. If you are interested in a technical book on the subject, these are widely available, from Clayton's 1968 Principles of Stellar Evolution and Nucleosynthesis, to Rolf's Cauldrons in the Cosmos: Nuclear Astrophysics (Theoretical Astrophysics Series), Pagel's Nucleosynthesis and Chemical Evolution of Galaxies, Arnett's Supernovae and Nucleosynthesis (Princeton Series in Astrophysics) and Iliadis's Nuclear Physics of Stars.

In this regard, it is a unique book and extremely useful for preparing a talk to a general audience. One requires some background in the field to understand all the material, and so in that sense the book is not the best primer to the field.

I have two complaints, however. Clayton states in the preface, "Some may criticize my omission of reference to the research literature." This I do not mind, considering the book's goal of being non-technical. However, whenever Don Clayton has done the research in question, he is sure to point that out to the reader. But rarely does he name any other scientific researchers in nuclear astrophysics who have greatly contributed as well. In this way, one who reads the book may come away with the incorrect impression that Clayton is the main contributor to this sort of research, when in fact the conclusion that Clayton is a bit self-righteous is probably more accurate. At the very least, it's poor form and becomes annoying.

My second complaint is that when I asked Clayton if he was going to write the second volume, germanium to uranium, and he laughed and said no.

This book is old -- written in 1967, revised in 1977. Time has marched on.

That said, this is still a valuable reference. It covers, in great depth, the theory of TEM, with chapters devoted to most subjects.

The chapter and appendix on sample preparation are invaluable!

This book will be somewhat superceeded when Marc de Graef's text is published (probably in Summer 2002 -- I took de Graef's course at Carnegie Mellon Univ., it was great!), but this book will still be an important reference, and an important historical signpost, in the field of TEM.

            Book Description

Dinosaurs of the Air: The Evolution and Loss of Flight in Dinosaurs and Birds presents the most recent work of renowned evolutionary scientist and dinosaur illustrator Gregory Paul. Dinosaurs of the Air synthesizes the growing body of evidence which suggests that modern-day birds have evolved from theropod dinosaurs of prehistoric times. Paul argues provocatively for the idea that the ancestor-descendant relationship between the dinosaurs and birds can on occasion be reversed, and that many dinosaurs were secondarily flightless descendants of creatures we would regard as birds.

Controversial and comprehensive, Dinosaurs of the Air also offers new, firsthand interpretations of major fossils; a balanced, rewarding discussion of the ways we think flight may have evolved (comparing "ground up" and "trees down" scenarios); a close look at the famous urvogel Archaeopteryx, discussing what it can and cannot tell us about bird origins; and in-depth analyses of bird and theropod phylogenetics. Full of rich detail for the specialist but accessible to the intelligent lay reader, the book includes the author's own stunning illustrations and a technical appendix which provides information, for example, on body mass/wing dimension relationships and avian/dinosaurian metabolics.

5 out of 5 stars Dinosaurs of the Air.......2002-11-10

Dinosaurs of the Air: The Evolution and Loss of Flight in Dinosaurs and Birds written by Gregory S. Paul is a well detailed book on comparetive anatomy between bird and dinosaurs.

The author is a well known evolutionary scientist and dinosaur illustrator and he has some interesting things to tell about in this book. For instance, the ancestor-descendant relationship of to birds and dinosaurs, most of the conventional thinking is that dinosaurs evolved into birds, but the author believes that on occasion the rolls could be reversed. That there may be many dinosaurs that were the secondarily flightless descendants of creatures we would think as birds.

This is contraversial, but the author makes his point with in-depth analyses of bird and theropod phylogenetics. There are many line-drawings that do a comparetive analysis, wing dimensions, avian/dinosaurian metabolics... this book has very detailed information. But, the book is written so that the layperson with a little scientific knowledge will unterstand the author intent.

This book has stunning illustrations throughout and well detailed bibliography making the information found in this book believable. There is a detail appendix toward the back of the book that covers in detail things of import for the book.

If you are one of the people who has an interest in avian/dinosaurian link this is a must purchase. This is an excellent book as it combines a large amount of technical data with drawings and related bird origins, including the energetics of the origin of avian flight. But, even with this detail, it is highly readable.

4 out of 5 stars This book is actually longer than Amazon claims.......2002-05-16

First of all this book is 436 pages. The cover is a painting of Sinornithosaurus I believe. The only reason I took off a perfect five star rating is the lack of pictures. Let's face it, who doesn't check out Greg's pictures first? There are illustrations (all line drawings, no color) but they do not cover enough pterosaurs. The only Pteranodons are skeletal drawings, and there are no Quetzalcoatlus life drawings. There are life restorations of Anhanguera and Pterodaustro. There are pictures of lots of fossil birds and a new skeletal drawing of Bambiraptor and of Deinonychus with the re-evaluated skull that is more like what Ostrom described in 1969. Disappointed to see no new life restoration of it. There are some of the old drawings (Oviraptor, Archaeopteryx, Elaphrosaurus, etc). Don;t expect this textbook to show up on ebay or even at your local stores. Get it if you're a completist or a dino technician or not convinced that birds are related to dinos.

              Book Description

The great dinosaur bone beds of the American and Canadian West are world famous and have yielded spectacular fossil finds. But the eastern United States and maritime Canada, where dinosaurs also roamed in great numbers, have been equally important to the study of these extraordinary creatures. Some dinosaur fossils have come from the bog iron and clay pits of Maryland and New Jersey, while others have been discovered in the riverbanks of North and South Carolina. Dinosaur footprint sites have been found from central Virginia to the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia.

In Dinosaurs of the East Coast, David Weishampel and Luther Young restore East Coast dinosaurs to their rightful place on the paleontological map. They describe such dinosaurs as the plant-eating Astrodon johnstoni, which browsed in a tropical Maryland jungle 100 million years ago; Anchisaurus polyzelus, which lived in New England some 200 million years ago; Eubrontes, the first large therapod on the East Coast; Pekinosaurus olseni, a primitive ornithischian found in North Carolina; and Hadrosaurus foulkii, a duck-billed dinosaur that lived in New Jersey some 70 million years ago. In addition, they chronicle the long and colorful history of dinosaur fossil hunting along the Atlantic coast and profile the modern-day fossil hunters -- both professional paleontologists and amateur collecters -- who continue to make important discoveries today. Richly illustrated with more than one hundred photographs and drawings, Dinosaurs of the East Coast combines science and history to offer a new look at an always fascinating subject.

Through the work of Charles Darwin, a great task was set before science: to progress from opinions about evolution to a science of evolution, and to reveal the inner laws and forces at work in the development of the organic world. In Thinking Beyond Darwin, Ernst-Michael Kranich focuses on a central problem of evolutionary science and shows us a way, based on Goethe's botanical and zoological investigations, of seeing the coherence and inner dynamics of organisms.

Using Goethe's concept of type as a key to vertebrate evolution, Kranich methodically lays a foundation for a science of evolution. In doing so, he focuses on the central problem of evolutionary science: are there underlying principles that connect the many disparate facts? By applying Goethe's method consistently to evolutionary thinking, Kranich shows that the laws and driving forces of evolution are encompassed by the inner lawfulness of living organisms, and that we must participate through formative thinking in the evolutionary processes.

This book makes an important contribution to the development of more adequate concepts of evolution and arrives at clear insights about earlier animal forms and evolutionary laws that could have immense consequences for future evolutionary thinking.

3 out of 5 stars Goethean science in the animal world.......2000-08-07

Ernst Michael Kranich has written an interesting book on the possibility of evolution without necessarily having to be of the Darwinian type. Even though his work is predated in the main by Wolfgang Schad (Man and Mammals) who also provides a far deeper analysis, it does add some new aspects to Goethean science.

Goeathen science or in other words the way of science developed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (the famous German poet) is different in the sense that it stays with the phenomenon rather than going outside of it. Goethe stresses this by statements such as "the phenomenon is already theory" using the Greek meaning of theory rather than the modern meaning which almost dissociates itself from the phenomenon under question. As such this approach is purely objective in the true sense of scientific, to get an idea of the full aspects of such a science in a very clear and methodical way devoid of speculation read the book by Henri Bortoft, The Wholeness of Nature, which can expand on this idea.

Kranich uses the Goethean approach to look carefully at the animal world and its developments such as horses skeletons and the organ arrangement in mammals, the important aspect is that he brings out the wholeness of the animal in question rather than an analysis of each part. The animal is seen whole rather than constructed of parts. For example does the word arm or hand having any meaning when abstracted from the body it is connected to, and so too for the organs and structure of the animal. This approach of Kranich is both satisfactory in a very human way and yet does not sacrifice scientific rigour.

Given the comments above I must note that not all of the book was as well written as I would have liked, its possible the translation from the German was not the best perhaps because of the concepts used in German which may have had untranslatable aspects. But I also felt that at times the science was on shaky ground never feeling quite secure in Kranich's argument and always feeling that either there was more to do to make one really believe it or that the opposing arguments from accepted science could not be fully dealt with.

Nonetheless a satisfying book and a good lead into Goethean approaches to science.

4 out of 5 stars Nonreligious Expose of Current Evolutionary Theories.......2000-05-23

If you think that only those with religious motivations find current evolutionary theories inadequate, this book is for you. These German scholars demonstrate that gradual accumulations of mutations does not add up to biological novelty. The abrupt appearance of fossils in the fossil record, as noted by the German paleontologist Otto Schindewolf decades ago, is also recounted. The work of Michael Denton is also mentioned.

                Book Description

This volume presents state-of-the-art papers on important topics and methods in the analysis of vertebrate microfossil assemblages. The minute remains of animals and plants have proven very useful to paleontologists as tools for dating large fossils, describing the environments which existed at the time the fossils were deposited, and identifying and mapping the extent of local floras and faunas, among other things. Due to the large sample sizes that can be obtained, the chance to recover rare taxa is much higher than it is during a search for skeletal remains. Analysis of the data produced from microvertebrate localities can address a wide range of questions as these papers clearly demonstrate.
