Excellent Reference for Executive.......2003-11-17
This resume reference is targetting audience with years of working experience. What I like about this book from the others are -
1. Plenty of examples, with genuine comments on the strength and uniqueness of each resume.
2. Categorize the resume section based on job titles and career (executive level).
3. This is a thick reference book and yet it din spend half the time teaching/educating what you can get from just any other resume book, the so-called writing tips. It goes straigth to the point on examples.
Well, consideirng the motives of why most of us get a resume book - i.e. to cross-reference, this is a book that's worth the money.
Reviewed by a Professional Resume Writer.......2000-06-17
If you are a professional resume writer, this book is a must for your reference materials. Not only does this book have many examples of executive resumes, it has excellent design and layout tips. Since most executive resumes are quite long with many qualifications, affiliations, accreditations and so forth, the layout and design tips were extremely valuable to me. Book Description
This second - completely revised - edition of Chris Kitchin's easy-to-read book provides a carefully structured introduction to the tools of astronomy. Beginning with an in-depth look at astronomical telescopes, it progresses through a coverage of positions and motions of astronomical objects, to observing instruments and techniques. New to this edition are sections on modern small telescopes and their design, revised material on the computer processing of data, and extended appendices. Like the first edition, questions (with answers) are given so that students and enthusiastic amateur astronomers can check their progress.
Customer Reviews:
Little value for money--not recommended.......2003-06-30
This book leaves much to be desired of it as far as content is concerned. Although all basic--and not so basic--aspects of introductory astronomy are covered here, this is done in an extremely superficial way. Every topic is only touched upon, in most cases, in a couple of pages maximum, giving only a bird's eye view them. The most deficient parts are those dealing with actual observing, about which the author gives very little information. The book is adorned with numerous illustrations, but lacking in text.
James Muirden's "How to Use an Astronomical Telescope" has done a much better job in this respect. Full explanations of where to look and what to find in the sky are given, including full chapters about the sun, the moon, the planets (one by one), comets, and deep sky objects such as galaxies, star clusters, nebulas, etc. Kitchin has done none of this.
But back to "Telescopes and Techniques". One particularly annoying feature of this book is how the editor of this collection has decided to present the text on the pages. Why, oh why, I kept asking myself, should the space of one thrid of each page be left as blank left margin? Longer lines will certainly not harm the reading, but on the contrary will make the reader feel that they have a serious book in their hands, rather than a children's story.
Finally, one must also wonder what justifies the high price of this book. Perhaps, I keep telling myself, it is the high-quality, glossy paper on which it is printed. For the rest, I cannot see any reason why anyone interested in more than just a very superficial introduction to astronomy should by this book.
Good intro to the field.......1997-05-15
This book is a very good introductory book. It has all you need to know about the history and practical aspects of astronomy. The technical explanations of optics get a bit detailed (i.e., into the math) at times, but are written in such a way that the principles are understood, even if the math isn't. Very good use of photos and illustrations. The author explains well, and doesn't inundate you in details you don't need

Book Description
Providing the first comprehensive overview of the method of crystal growth in gels, Professor Henisch reviews the field, covering the underlying physics as well as the empirical experience of growth techniques accumulated over the past century. In addition, the book discusses the phenomenon of periodic precipitation, which often governs the distribution of crystal in laboratory growth systems. For the first time, computer techniques are brought to bear on the subject, the diffusion equations being solved numerically, in association with the conditions governing precipitations and crystal growth.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
To the list of great American child narrators that includes Huck Finn and Scout Finch, let us now add Reuben "Rube" Land, the asthmatic 11-year-old boy at the center of Leif Enger's remarkable first novel, Peace Like a River. Rube recalls the events of his childhood, in small-town Minnesota circa 1962, in a voice that perfectly captures the poetic, verbal stoicism of the northern Great Plains. "Here's what I saw," Rube warns his readers. "Here's how it went. Make of it what you will." And Rube sees plenty.
In the winter of his 11th year, two schoolyard bullies break into the Lands' house, and Rube's big brother Davy guns them down with a Winchester. Shortly after his arrest, Davy breaks out of jail and goes on the lam. Swede is Rube's younger sister, a precocious writer who crafts rhymed epics of romantic Western outlawry. Shortly after Davy's escape, Rube, Swede, and their father, a widowed school custodian, hit the road too, swerving this way and that across Minnesota and North Dakota, determined to find their lost outlaw Davy. In the end it's not Rube who haunts the reader's imagination, it's his father, torn between love for his outlaw son and the duty to do the right, honest thing. Enger finds something quietly heroic in the bred-in-the-bone Minnesota decency of America's heartland. Peace Like a River opens up a new chapter in Midwestern literature. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
Hailed as one of the year's top five novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all major newspapers, national bestseller Peace Like a River captured the hearts of a nation in need of comfort. "A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing," Peace Like a River is "a collage of legends from sources sacred and profane -- from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police dramas" (Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor). In "lyrical, openhearted prose" (Michael Glitz, The New York Post), Enger tells the story of eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles. Along with his sister and father, Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw older brother who has been controversially charged with murder. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and its remarkable conclusion shows how family, love, and faith can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of fates. Leif Enger's "miraculous" (Valerie Ryan, The Seattle Times) novel is a "perfect book for an anxious time ... of great literary merit that nonetheless restores readers' faith in the kindness of stories" (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press).
Customer Reviews:
a matter of taste.......2007-09-18
This book came highly recommended to me by a long time friend I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as she did. There is a very persistent and deep religious theme which might appeal to a lot of people but which I found tiresome
The author tries to achieve a combination of Mark Twain americana and a strain of magical realism but the writing style wears thin. The narration is from the point of view of an 11 year old boy who is a sympathetic character but it has a tone of irony which is unconvincing for the time and place and the characters
The basic story is too thin for the number of pages and stream of consciousness taken to tell it and rather than wishing it would never end I found myself thinking "WILL it never end?"
Nonetheless, I think for a reader less analytical and more sentimental than I am, it would be a totally satisfactory, memory piece I can see why some reviewers are rhapsodic, but it didn't have that affect on me.
It was okay!!.......2007-09-12
The book was enjoyable but very verbose. At times I found myself wondering which story was I reading for, to me, there was too much story within a story.
My oh my..........2007-08-10
As I read this book I had to keep going to the back flap to stare at Mr. Enger's face. I am not sure why except that I needed to see the face of the person who wrote this most incredible, lovely story.
I looked back at some of the other reviews and you should know by now what this story is about.
What you don't know until you read it is how beautifully it is written. I can't find the words to describe Mr. Enger's writing style - except to say as a writer I am jealous. He uses words unlike any other author I have read before.
But this is such a sweet, sad, simply wonderful story. Treat yourself to a scrumptious read.
Read it to your kids.......2007-08-09
I've just re-read Peace Like a River, this time aloud to my nine-year-old daughter. There's much in Enger's prose that flew as high over her head as a Canada goose. But not the story, or Enger's richly-drawn characters, or the hope that a miracle might arrive at just the right time.
It is a magical thing to see this story unfold through a child's wide eyes. I watched my daughter literally jump up and down with delight when Jeremiah set out to court Roxanna... saw her scowl upon each arrival of the "putrid fed" Andreeson, hating him every bit as much as Swede... felt her squeeze my hand tight as we came to the book's climax, and then smiled as she took a long, deep breath and told me, "Okay. You can finish."
And what conversations we had as we were reading! We talked of honor and faith and loving our enemies. She wants to know more about Huckleberry Finn and Robinson Crusoe and Butch Cassidy. She wants to know how I "courted" her mom. She wants an Airstream trailer.
She'll come back to this book, I'm sure. Each time she does she'll find something new to enjoy. And I imagine that years from now she'll find a battered old copy at a garage sale or used book store, and she'll read the story to her nine-year-old. Peace Like a River has the markings of a classic.
Powerful.......2007-07-30
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I wasn't sure if I'd like it in the beginning when the plot seemed to be heading in a bleak direction, but I'm glad I stayed with it. It's a book that uplifts your spirit and gives you hope. I highly recommend it.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable, readable, refreshing.......2000-01-31
OK so this isn't literary genius, but I found it a very enjoyable, easy read. I read an occasional romance, and this was refreshing to have one written from the Christian perspective. I've picked up some other of this authors books and have enjoyed them as well -- she's quite capable of taking us on the trail with her and showing us what it may have been like.
