Book Description
A Groundbreaking Look at One of the Most Important Issues Facing Businesses Today Often overlooked, yet vital to an organization's overall operations and productivity, how work space is used is becoming an increasingly critical issue for businesses to address. Based on a four-year research project conducted by members of the MIT School of Architecture and Planning's Space Planning and Organization Research Group (SPORG), Excellence by Design examines this important issue. The book explores how the workplace interacts with work practices, introducing proven strategies and providing a sound framework for creating the workplace of the future. Covering a wide range of essential topics, from the interpersonal and political dimensions of workplace making to the art of using tools for workplace and organizational transformation, Excellence by Design introduces the "process architecture" approach to creating workplaces.

SPARKS THINKING ON TOPIC OVERLOOKED IN ORGANIZATION CHANGE........1999-12-10
Explores the design of the physical workplace and the role this factor plays in improving productivity and operational effectiveness. Based on a four-year research project conducted by the MIT School of Architecture and Planning's Space Planning and Organization Research Group, this book introduces the concept of Process Architecture, meaning engaging a wide array of stakeholders in rethinking the dynamic relationship between work processes and the spatial, technological, financial, and organizational environments with which these processes occur. The authors provide a comprehensive explanation of the approach and framework with cases from the field. For those concerned with organizational strategy and design, this work introduces a key aspect-the workplace-often overlooked in organization change initiatives. This is an thoughtful book with original thinking. Highly recommended. Reviewed by Gerry Stern and Yvette Borcia, founders, Stern & Associates and HR Knowledge Network, authors of Stern's Sourcefinder: The Master Directory to HR and Business Management Information & Resources, Stern's CyberSpace SourceFinder, and Stern's Compensation and Benefits.

Book Description
From the drop of an apple to the stately dance of the galaxies, gravity is omnipresent in the Cosmos. Even with its high profile, gravity is the most enigmatic of all the known basic forces in nature. The Lighter Side of Gravity presents a beautifully clear and completely nontechnical introduction to the phenomenon of this force in all its manifestations. Astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar begins with an historical background to the discovery of the law of gravitation by Isaac Newton in the seventeenth century. Using familiar analogies, interesting anecdotes, and numerous illustrations to get across subtle effects and difficult points to readers, he goes on to describe the general theory of relativity and some of its strange and unfamiliar ideas such as curved spacetime, the bending of light, and black holes. Since first publication in 1982 (W.H. Freeman), Dr. Narlikar has brought his book completely up to date and expanded it to include the discovery of gigantic gravitational lenses in space, the findings of the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite, the detection of dark matter in galaxies, the investigation of the very early Universe, and other new ideas in cosmology. This lucid and stimulating book presents a clear approach to the intriguing phenomenon of gravity for everyone who has ever felt caught in its grip. Jayant Narlikar is the winner of many astronomical prizes and the author of Introduction to Cosmology (Cambridge University Press, 1993).
Customer Reviews:
Gravity from A to Z.......1998-07-31
It's always a pleasure to read a well-written book authored by a leading scientist. Such is the quality of Jayant V. Narlikar's book "The lighter side of gravity." One of the risks associated with writing any book on the leading edge of science, however, is that it will be obsolete almost before leaving the presses. Narlikar's book suffers somewhat from this problem. The book has an original publication date of 1982, and revised publication of 1996. Consequently, it misses some recent discoveries about black holes, experimental evidence of neutrino oscillation and its implications for neutrino mass, the mass of the universe, and the nature of dark matter.
The book offers a nice historical perspective, from Aristotle to Galileo and on to Newton and his laws of motion and gravitation. I particularly enjoyed the clear explanations surrounding the insight and possible clues that led Newton to the discovery of his law of gravitation.
The book's promotional litera! ture presents it as a layperson's guide to gravity, but without over-simplified (and erroneous) information. This is a high goal, and generally met, though the book's brevity might lead to some false notions. For example, the book portrays hydrogen burning as the fusing of four protons, with a helium-nucleus byproduct, two positrons, two neutrinos, and some energy. There is no mention of what theorists initially thought was the inadequacy of thermal energy to initiate fusion. There is no discussion of the importance of quantum tunneling, or the formation of helium 4 in stages (two protons form deuterium, from which helium 3 is formed, and then helium 4). Narlikar's book is not very long (only a little more than 200 pages) and could easily accommodate the extra detail.
From solar models the book digresses slightly to discuss curved space, which Narlikar does very well without equations, and with the aid only of simple diagrams and examples. There is a brief though tru! ncated discussion of supernova. Other books such as John G! ribbin's "Blinded by the Light," and Laurence A. Marschall's "The Supernova Story" offer far more insight for the weekend physicist.
The discussion about black holes, even without the most recent discoveries, is nicely done. As with any subject as broad as that of gravity, there are missing elements (there is no discussion of Hawking radiation, for example). Just the same, the discussion about black holes is about as complete as a non-technical book on the subject can be.
Narlikar finishes his book by describing the big bang theory of cosmology, its weaknesses (some of which have been at least partially resolved since 1996) and his alternative theory of quasi-steady-state. For the most part he has been admirably forthright about the scientific debate, with the possible exception of a closing comment in chapter 8:
"In spite of these questions regarding white holes of a limited size, astronomers have, paradoxically, given an uncritical acceptance to the hypothesis of ! the biggest white hole of them all: the Universe!"
Although one may disagree with the big-bang theory, it seems remarkable that anyone would claim it has been accepted uncritically. Narlikar's comment seems even more remarkable since chapter 9 proceeds to describe the wealth of scientific data supporting the big-bang model.
Overall, however, I really enjoyed this book. The closing chapter, though perhaps controversial, helps us understand that science is a progressive system of thought. Even our most cherished ideas -- perhaps especially our most cherished ideas -- are subject to review and critical examination in light of the most recent experimental evidence. If Narlikar is right about his model of the universe, we are on a threshold in cosmology. If Narlikar is wrong, we are on a threshold in cosmology. Either way, it's a wonderful universe. Read Narlikar's book. It will help you understand it a little better.

Book Description
In the nineteenth century, philology -- especially comparative philology -- made impressive gains as a discipline, thus laying the foundation for the modern field of linguistics. In Darwinism and the Linguistic Image, Stephen G. Alter examines how comparative philology provided a genealogical model of language that Darwin, as well as other scientists and language scholars, used to construct rhetorical parallels with the common-descent theory of evolution.

Not Helpful - Except as a Footstool.......2007-01-11
I purchased this book for the first part of my Biomechanics class. We raced through the first 10 chapters, and each one was very difficult to understand. Fung skips steps in his derivations which, for an undergraduate, made studying more confusing and time consuming.
Probably the most frustrating part (at least for an engineering student) of the text is that none of the equations (except the ones from Chapter 1) are applied to anything. Not even for the problems at the end of each chapter. The book is just a long list of mathematical derivations regarding hypothetical blobs, I mean "bodies of mass", in space.
In summary, I wish this book had a lot more examples pertaining to applying all the equations written in this book. Perhaps application of these equations will be used in the second part of my Biomechanics class, where we use yet another Fung book. I hope so.
Not good for me.......2005-03-08
I am the matematican and I had to start learning C.M. from this book. And I didn't like it. First chapter is some very simplified approach to linear elasticity, but it doesn't developed any intuition and reading it was waste of time. Stretch tensor was introduced with avoided notion of polar decomposition. This presentation was far less intuitive for me. The linear algerbra behind primal stresses is described and computed in details, but nowadays the student involved in computer methods and engineering must know this things in my opinion. And the language is not instuitive: me, matematican, couldn't do most of exercises after reading chapter they relate to. It tasted like old-fashioned book.
What a great reference book.......2000-07-05
I thought that this book was a great reference source and it has come in handy for me many times. I would be willing to buy it if I could find a copy, unfortunately it is out of stock, so I will have to return to the library every time I need it.

Book Description
Stewart Dubinsky knew his father had served in World War II. And he'd been told how David Dubin (as his father had Americanized the name that Stewart later reclaimed) had rescued Stewart's mother from the horror of the Balingen concentration camp. But when he discovers, after his father's death, a packet of wartime letters to a former fiancée, and learns of his father's court-martial and imprisonment, he is plunged into the mystery of his family's secret history and driven to uncover the truth about this enigmatic, distant man who'd always refused to talk about his war.
As he pieces together his father's past through military archives, letters, and, finally, notes from a memoir his father wrote while in prison, secretly preserved by the officer who defended him, Stewart starts to assemble a dramatic and baffling chain of events. He learns how Dubin, a JAG lawyer attached to Patton's Third Army and desperate for combat experience, got more than he bargained for when he was ordered to arrest Robert Martin, a wayward OSS officer who, despite his spectacular bravery with the French Resistance, appeared to be acting on orders other than his commanders'. In pursuit of Martin, Dubin and his sergeant are parachuted into Bastogne just as the Battle of the Bulge reaches its apex. Pressed into the leadership of a desperately depleted rifle company, the men are forced to abandon their quest for Martin and his fiery, maddeningly elusive comrade, Gita, as they fight for their lives through carnage and chaos the likes of which Dubin could never have imagined.
In reconstructing the terrible events and agonizing choices his father faced on the battlefield, in the courtroom, and in love, Stewart gains a closer understanding of his past, of his father's character, and of the brutal nature of war itself.

POLITICAL BOREDOM.......2007-08-26
Covering blacks, women, poor, socialism, communism, and homosexuality, this one will bore you to death. Goodbye Rusty.
Major Disappointment.......2007-05-04
If you're a Turow fan like me, you can't be but disappointed by this book.
The premise is good. And the first few chapters raise expectations for a gripping tale. Then somewhere around page 100 the books begins to sag under the weight of unimaginative dialogue, two dimensional characters and a couple of shallow plot twists.
For example, Turow's inclusion of the Biddy character is a sophmoric transparent attempt to add some Meaningful Social/Racial Content to the book. It feels totally forced and phoney.
Gita is another character who is presented shallowly. Her role in the climax of this book was so telegraphed that I figured it out by page 300.
Not worthy of Turow.
Turow not at his best.......2007-03-04
I read his memoir of college life and "Presumed Innocent" years ago...
picked this up because the reviews on the paperback cover looked promising. I got through page 37 and gave up... Reads like a high school student writing about what he imagined happened in World War II... comments about French women "and their rugged lovemaking style" stereotypes people to the point that the reader says "What?" His descriptions of other characters, whether good or bad folk are lame as well. I just didn't care to read more about two-dimensional "people", including him, his mom, his father and the rest. Hey, I want my $7 bucks back.
A Reluctant War Hero Story.......2007-02-26
Scott Turow has written often about lawyers. Many of his books tend to be darker and more melancholy than the typical lawyer as crusading hero fare. Turow has explored themes of dysfunctional families, disgrace and failed relationships. Thus, it is not surprising that when Turow writes about "The Greatest Generation," his work is colored with greys of ambiguity, mystery and latent shame.
Ordinary Heroes is the story of a newspaperman struggling to unravel the enigma of his father's past. Stewart Dubinsky had always known his father, David Dubin, as a quiet insurance company lawyer who rarely spoke of his military service. However, in going through his father's papers, he learns of a wartime court martial at odds with his father's later career as a respected attorney. Investigating deeper against the wishes of his family (and employing deception to do so), he learns of his father's mission to arrest a rogue OSS agent. As Lt. Dubin seeks to investigate and then arrest Maj. Robert Martin, he is led to both admire and feel used by his prey. His ultimate decision to allow Martin to escape leads to his own court martial and conviction, which were later rescinded.
This story works extremely well because of the multi-layered dimensions of the story. On the surface, there is a son trying to understand his father. Below that is the story of the story of a young Jewish lawyer who is so transformed by his wartime experience that he is willing to risk everything. Woven even further below the surface is a love story which becomes apparent only in retrospect. Although Ordinary Heroes takes place against a backdrop of the savagery of war, it is primarily a human story. Like Stewart Dubinsky, the reader wants to know what happened. However, the greater challenge is to understand why the characters acted the way they did.
Turow's novel also conveys a strong feeling of historical accuracy. In a note on sources at the end of the book, Turow notes that some of the narrative was based on his own father's experiences as a doctor during World War II and acknowledges some plot devices taken from actual events. The result is to give a gritty and unromantic view of a war zone much as it must have been encountered by the actual participants.
Up there with the best World War II combat novels.......2007-02-06
Scott Turow has transcended the world of the thriller. Consistently since his first novel, he has given us books with character development every bit as good as the plot. Authors of `serious' novels might want to take lessons from him on illuminating the human condition while also delivering a gripping plot and memorable characters.
Turow moves this novel's venue away from his usual present-day Kindle County courtrooms, to the fight across France in World War II. U.S. Army lawyer David Dubin, suddenly thrust into combat, transforms from paper-pusher into war-weary but battle-hardened vet, his son learns after discovering some secrets after his father's death.
Dubin crosses paths with Robert Martin, an OSS agent gifted at sabotage but now seen as a rogue agent or worse. Martin's girlfriend Gita Lodz, an escapee from Nazi-occupied Poland, proves older than her years, invaluable as Martin's sidekick and quite unlike Dubin's innocent American fiancee. Roland Teedle, the overbearing general who wants Martin's head, orders the ambivalent Dubin to prosecute him for insubordination.
When Martin is spotted in Belgium after giving Dubin the slip, Dubin finds himself ordered by Teedle onto a night parachute drop - right into a harrowing battle. Dubin finds his own world turned upside down, and then must make difficult choices against the backdrop of the war's final days and the looming Cold War.
Turow avoids formulas in making these characters surprisingly three-dimensional as they grapple with war, their roles in it and what's left of their lives. Teedle particularly might easily have been reduced to a twisted martinet from Central Casting, but Turow to his credit finds more to him than that.
The only thing that doesn't ring true about this book is the repeated perfection of Martin's commando missions. History suggests some should have been marred by unforeseeable complications or betrayed to the Germans by informants.
Still, the best character is Dubin himself. And this novel belongs right up there with the best World War II combat novels such as "The Thin Red Line". Don't miss it.
