Book Description
The insights of relativity have illuminated a century of astronomical discovery, often going beyond the phenomena that Einstein lived to see. This book shows, in nonmathematical ways, how deeply these ways of viewing the Universe have informed our interpretations of it, and how many of the amazing discoveries of these decades have made sense only as part of Einstein's universe.
The author brings together the ways in which we see the bizarre effects of relativity played out on a cosmic scale. None of this is particularly new to practicing astronomers, but much has yet to be seen outside technical journals. The presentation avoids mathematics (except for the most famous equation in all of physics!), and is designed to be accessible to the interested public. Gravitational lenses, the visible effects of light-travel delays, the search for black holes, the ways relativity in atomic nuclei makes stars shine, are all treated. In many cases, some of the principals are still alive and provided new commentary on the discoveries. Numerous illustrations are newly produced from data in the archives of such observatories as Hubble and Chandra.
Customer Reviews:
elegant observations.......2006-07-26
The best aspect of this book is how it explains to an educated reader, who is not an astronomer or physicist, the latest results that confirm Einstein's theories. It is still not a light breezy read. While non-mathematical, you do still need to pay attention to the various concepts as Keel explains them.
Some of the observations are very elegant, like gravitational microlensing. And the analysis of the vast data accumulated from IRAS, Hubble and Chandra. What is impressive is how lensing is now no longer used as a test of General Relativity, but as an extremely powerful "telescope" in its own right.
An Amateur Astronomer's Review.......2006-02-01
A grand book illuminating our understanding of the cosmos, and the amazing techniques used in an array of astronomical observations. Over 100 topics are addressed in a concise and clear style that managed to hold my attention and not leave me hanging, even for the more difficult subjects. Many images are incorporated to help in his subject presentation, and some are used to help build on the wonderful historical perspective inherent in astronomy.
Keel also adds warmth to his book by often giving short and personal stories of some specific men and women dedicated to astronomy and physics, as well as, on occasion, share some of his own personal and interesting experiences. As an amateur, I was not overwhelmed with any complicated presentations thanks to his careful explanations of even the tough, thought provoking topics. I definitely recommend this book to any who are hungry to go a little deeper in getting to know how astronomers have been able to ascertain so many new truths about our universe that once stood before Einstein, and now stands before you and me

Book Description
This book presents formulations for over-the-counter (OTC) or nonprescription drugs. The phrase “over-the-counter” implies that the product may be purchased by the consumer without the need for a physician's prescription. The terms “nonprescription” and “OTC” are synonymous.
The OTC drug formulations in this book are organized according to their therapeutic effect. There are 19 categories of OTC drugs included. Each category is presented in a single chapter that consists of two parts; Part I presents the composition of brand name products, and Part II presents starting or prototype formulations contributed by suppliers of raw materials for OTC drugs.
The brand name products are listed alphabetically in Part I of each chapter, followed by the name of the manufacturer, the type and concentration of the active ingredient(s) and the product form(s). It is also customary, but not required, for the manufacturer to list the so-called “inactive ingredients” on the label of the product.
Part II of each chapter (except Chapter 17) includes starting formulations, developed by a number of raw material suppliers. Those formulations that are included, contain not only the concentration of the active ingredients but also the concentration of the other ingredients and, in most cases, a recommended procedure for mixing the formulation.
This book includes 559 brand name formulations of 63 manufacturers and 270 supplier's suggested formulations for a total of 829 formulations.

Book Description
"It is close to being a masterpiece...could well be the classic presentation of the area." Warren J. Ewens, University of Pennsylvania, USA
Population genetics is concerned with the study of the genetic, ecological, and evolutionary factors that influence and change the genetic composition of populations. The emphasis here is on models that have a direct bearing on evolutionary quantitative genetics. Applications concerning the maintenance of genetic variation in quantitative traits and their dynamics under selection are treated in detail.
* Provides a unified, self-contained and in-depth study of the theory of multilocus systems
* Introduces the basic population-genetic models
* Explores the dynamical and equilibrium properties of the distribution of quantitative traits under selection
* Summarizes important results from more demanding sections in a comprehensible way
* Employs a clear and logical presentation style
Following an introduction to elementary population genetics and discussion of the general theory of selection at two or more loci, the author considers a number of mutation-selection models, and derives the dynamical equations for polygenic traits under general selective regimes. The final chapters are concerned with the maintenance of quantitative-genetic variation, the response to directional selection, the evolutionary role of deleterious mutations, and other topics.
Graduate students and researchers in population genetics, evolutionary theory, and biomathematics will benefit from the in-depth coverage. This text will make an excellent reference volume for the fields of quantitative genetics, population and theoretical biology.

WORLD OF MATHEMATICAL GENETICS.... EKREM AYNA .......2005-06-13
Well It is different than quantitative genetics, forget about the statistical work, forget the statistical rules. Now a new subject exists. Mathematical genetics (NOT QUANTITATIVE GENETICS). This book is a must for every one who is interested in genetics and who is planning a life for it. The book its self is not highly related with diagnosis genetics but IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND THE THEORY OF GENETICS GET THIS BOOK WELL IT MAYBE EXPENSIVE BUT DO NOT FORGET THAT YOU WÝLL BUY ONCE NOT TWICE :) BUY IT DO NOT THINK MUCH AS I DID

"I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974." And so begins Middlesex, the mesmerizing saga of a near-mythic Greek American family and the "roller-coaster ride of a single gene through time." The odd but utterly believable story of Cal Stephanides, and how this 41-year-old hermaphrodite was raised as Calliope, is at the tender heart of this long-awaited second novel from Jeffrey Eugenides, whose elegant and haunting 1993 debut, The Virgin Suicides, remains one of the finest first novels of recent memory.
Eugenides weaves together a kaleidoscopic narrative spanning 80 years of a stained family history, from a fateful incestuous union in a small town in early 1920s Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit; from the early days of Ford Motors to the heated 1967 race riots; from the tony suburbs of Grosse Pointe and a confusing, aching adolescent love story to modern-day Berlin. Eugenides's command of the narrative is astonishing. He balances Cal/Callie's shifting voices convincingly, spinning this strange and often unsettling story with intelligence, insight, and generous amounts of humor:
Emotions, in my experience aren't covered by single words. I don't believe in "sadness," "joy," or "regret."
I'd like to have at my disposal complicated hybrid emotions, Germanic traincar constructions like, say, "the happiness that attends disaster." Or: "the disappointment of sleeping with one's fantasy." ... I'd like to have a word for "the sadness inspired by failing restaurants" as well as for "the excitement of getting a room with a minibar." I've never had the right words to describe my life, and now that I've entered my story, I need them more than ever.
When you get to the end of this splendorous book, when you suddenly realize that after hundreds of pages you have only a few more left to turn over, you'll experience a quick pang of regret knowing that your time with Cal is coming to a close, and you may even resist finishing it--putting it aside for an hour or two, or maybe overnight--just so that this wondrous, magical novel might never end. --Brad Thomas Parsons
Book Description
"I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day of January 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of l974. . . My birth certificate lists my name as Calliope Helen Stephanides. My most recent driver’s license...records my first name simply as Cal."
So begins the breathtaking story of Calliope Stephanides and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family who travel from a tiny village overlooking Mount Olympus in Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit, witnessing its glory days as the Motor City, and the race riots of l967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban Grosse Pointe, Michigan. To understand why Calliope is not like other girls, she has to uncover a guilty family secret and the astonishing genetic history that turns Callie into Cal, one of the most audacious and wondrous narrators in contemporary fiction. Lyrical and thrilling, Middlesex is an exhilarating reinvention of the American epic.
Download Description
Spanning across eight decades--and one unusually awkward adolescence - Jeffrey Eugenides' long-awaited second novel is a grand, utterly original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire.
Customer Reviews:
Ruined my summer.......2007-09-18
I guess a Pulitzer Prize and being on Oprah's Book List does not make for a good book. I spent my entire summer trying to get through this book. Fianlly on Saturday, September 15th at 10:38 am, I finished.
I was not drawned into any of the characters, found that the narrative was all over the place, found that the descriptions were overwhelming and as far as being controversial, I don't even think that the author really touched on the subject but skirted the issue.
I was very disappointed!!!
Middlesex an awsome read.......2007-09-18
Middlesex was certainly a book that I could NOT put down after I began reading. First of all it is a very well writen book. It began stating the birth(s) of Cal and took you through her life. You could feel how she felt. Starting in Greece and ending on Middlesex, was a wonderful journey for the reader. I loved the writing so much of Eugenides, that I ordered his previously written book,(Virgin Suicides) and am waiting for his latest book to be printed. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Excellent writing on controversial topic.......2007-09-13
This might be the best written book I've ever read. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who has trouble reading about modern sexual issues, however.
Completely Unique--Breaks New Ground.......2007-07-20
"Middlesex" by Jefferey Eugenides is as unique as its protagonist, Cal/Calliope Stephanides, a hermaphrodite born a female, yet destined at puberty to express his underlying male nature.
It is easy to see why this book won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2003. At once a sweeping rollicking comic epic family saga, this novel breaks new ground by successfully hybridizing different literary styles and throwing aside conventions of proper storytelling voice and construction. The novel is told primarily in first person. How else could Eugenides tell the tale of this endearing heroine/hero without resorting to awkward use of pronouns? But then comes the real breakthrough. How does the author take us into the minds of the supporting characters when the novel is narrated in first person? Eugenides solves this by making his narrator creatively omniscient. The reader is consciously aware at all times that it is Cal/Callie, the protagonist, that is stepping into the minds of his/her ancestors and immediate family to reveal their hidden feelings as she/he tells their tales in third person. It works! The storytelling comes alive on two levels: we better understand the motivations of the third-person characters, and we learn to treasure our creative, endearing, fully human storytelling protagonist. As a bonus, this construction often leaves the door wide open for outrageous comedy, and Eugenides makes full use of it.
The book mixes literary styles, too. It starts out almost like a fairy tale--a tragicomic Greek epic--with chorus, no less! Much of the next part of the novel is written in a 19th-century style. Finally, the novel transforms into a modern psychological coming-of-age tale. As the literary style transforms over the course of the novel, we progress from the stories of Cal/Callie's Greek ancestors through to the present day. Along the way, we are treated to a courageous Greek-American immigrant family saga as well as the story of Detroit from the Prohibition through to the present day. The story of Detroit is so vividly told that the city almost becomes a third character. In particular, we are brought into the alien worlds of early Ford assembly-line factory work, bootlegging prohibition gin-running and speakeasies, the birth of the Nation of Islam, the 1967 race riots, the rise of franchising wealth, and white flight to rich suburbs including sending children to private schools to avoid racial desegregation. All is so vividly recreated that the reader in transported.
At the heart of the novel is, of course, poor confused sweet child Callie/Cal. The story of her/his gradual awakening to sexual awareness, self-acceptance, and identity is profoundly touching, tastfully rendered, and ultimately very believable.
I loved this book. I did not want it to end; even after almost 600 pages, I wanted more.

DID NOT CARE FOR THIS BOOK AT ALL.....STOPPED READING THIRD OF WAY THROUGH....LOST MY INTEREST.
Brilliantly written, unusual journey.......2007-10-10
One of the best books I've read in a long while, I thought this book was both complex and brilliant. After getting off to a slow start, I couldn't wait to put the book down. I had a hard time relating with the grandparents and their moral dilemma, but I was glad to get over the initial ick factor. Cal's gender identity issues were written with such care and compasssion, simply amazing.
Two and a half stars, actually........2007-10-07
I love to get immersed in a story. Fall into it as if I were right there in the thick of things. This did not do it for me at all. Although many of the characters were fairly well developed, it was not in a way that made me care for them. I was curious to see how Callie's "coming out", so to say, would occur and her reaction. This was the only thing that kept me reading. Well, that and my self-imposed commitment to finish what I start.
The author's talent for stringing together lyrical phrases make for some lovely bright spots. But many times I found his efforts to write well were a bit heavy handed. Thank goodness that "Sing, muses..." stuff only popped up a couple of times. Once would have been enough for me.
There is a lot of prejudice among the characters in this book, and a lot of stereotypes as well. Perhaps because the main character would find themself a subject of both, in many ways. So there is a depth. But it is so mired in the heavy soup of the author's overprose that one almost misses it. I found it an effort to slog through it. I agree with many reviewers that the last part of the book was the most engaging.
This was the most recent reading for the book club I participate with. I am very curious to see what the others have to say about it. I commonly re-read books a year or two after the inital reading. I don't think I'll be doing that with "Middlesex"
Bait & Switch?.......2007-10-01
When I read the back of this book, I wasn't sure it was a story I could get into. It's fairly untraveled ground, the journey of a hermaphrodite from one sexual identity to another. But that's what books are supposed to do...expand our thoughts and imagination. So I prepared myself and jumped in.
But I found an entirely different story. For the first 70% of the book, the story was that of the history of the Stephanides family, from turn of the century Greece to the Detroit the 60's and early 70's. At first, I found this irritating; this wasn't the story I'd bargained for. But the more I read, the richer the tale became. The fascinating detail, the colorful accounts, the noble immigrant struggle upon which so many families pride themselves. It became an entertaining, engrossing read.
Yet still in the back of my mind was an impatience. When do we get to the heart? When do I hear Calliope's story? Her fight, her journey? As it turns out, the book should have kept its focus on the family at large, becasue Calliope's story ends up feeling rushed and incomplete. There's an attempt at opening windows to her soul, but it's usually done in the form of adolescent adventures and experiences, not really much soul searching or analysis. She ends up running away from her family and her future much in the way the story begins to spin out of reach, into a series of sudden misadventures leading to no real conclusion. It felt as if this long, rich hard-fought story of the Stephanides came to a jangled, screeching halt.
I'm gald I read the book. I finsihed it, which is more than I can say I feel the author did.
Conflicted, ambivalent, approach / avoidance ?.......2007-09-30
A very unusual book, heavy, not for the casual reader, or the squeamish - while reading over a few weeks (a long time for a book for me), I spent the whole time trying to decide if I wanted to stop or keep going. However, in retrospect, a remarkable book - the Greek / Detroit / cultural / family history were very well done, and the sexual dichotomy - a challenging subject from many viewpoints, handled well. I would recommended it, but only to specific people.
