Customer Reviews:
Effective refresher ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07
I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!
Great for more advanced courses...........2006-12-12
I bought this book as a study aid for my Elementary Statistics class. Although the book does give you many examples to help solve, it gets a little too complicated for a beginning statistics class. It became hard to sort through the things I needed to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. If you are needing this book for your job or a more advanced statistics course, I would recommend it, but it's one for the beginner to leave alone.
Comprehensive Guide to Statistics.......2006-06-13
This excellent book provides a comprehensive look at statistical methods. It's a great reference guide with 19 chapters, each of which build nicely on one another.
Chapters 1 through 11 lay the foundation of statistical study and the reader should benefit greatly from this framework.
Specifically, Chapters 1 through 3 cover Variables and Graphs, Frequency Distributions and Mean-Median-Mode concepts. Chapters 4 through 6 move on to cover Standard Deviation, Skewness and Elementary Probability Theory. Chapter 7 then discusses Binomial, Normal and Poisson Distributions.
Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11 delve into Sampling, Statistical Estimation, Statistical Decision and Small Sampling Theory.
The remaining chapters offer practical insights into such topics as Chi-Square test, Correlation Theory, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Time Series Analysis and Statistical Process Control. Much of this appears in the CFA curriculum and therefore is a worthy supplemental study.
True to its format, this Schaum's book helps readers via its question and answer format in each of its chapters. Going through these problems teaches and reinforces concepts taught in the first pages of each chapter in the book.
Great job authors! I'm hoping others will benefit from this book too.
Schaum's Outline of Statistics.......2006-03-03
This is a handy desk guide to statistics for someone who needs a statistical referemce as part of their job but is not a statistician, ie, performance management, data preparation or other information analysis. I compared this book to many others and found it the most comprehensive.
A Failed Attempt .......2005-01-12
This book is sloppily edited, with numerous typos in the equations. Page 91 has two symbolic errors plus a text error.
Overbar omitted twice on page 19 giving a nonsensical formula Z = (X - X)/s
Book Description
Schaum’s Easy Outline Series
When you are looking for a quick nuts-and-bolts overview, there’s no series that does it better. Schaum's Easy Outline of Introduction to Mathematical Economics is a pared-down, simplified, and tightly focused version of its predecessor.
Book Description
Conforming to the current business statistics curriculum, this fourth edition of Schaum's Outline of Business Statistics reflects recent changes in the course as well as in general practice, including new sections in each chapter on the application of Excel--the most used program in offices throughout the world--making this the first book to address this change in the curriculum. The fourth edition continues to provide a direct and effective tool for learning the fundamentals of business statistics without the technical verbiage.

Excellent book.......2007-09-23
very good book----I never read statistics before. Now I am securing A grade in weekly assignment refering this book
Not as sleepy as the average Statistics Book..........2007-05-14
But still as boring as watching grass grow! Honestly, the methodology of statistics/economics/finance/accounting, etc: is a major "yawn" for many. I personally excel at "applied economics", in other words, "How does this affect me/you/us?"
My professor used this book as a supplement to his "Statistics II" class, and it was "above average" in that regard, as was he.
Just remember, if you need this type of book to understand the methodology of "bean-counting", then this is better than any other I've seen in it's type. IT IS A VERY HARD SUBJECT, SO YOU MUST BREAK YOUR BACK AND CONCENTRATE- THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU TO DO THAT. THERE IS NO MAGIC-BULLET BOOK, that I know of, FOR STATISTICS II!!! STUDY HARD!!!
Easy to understand. Lots of exercises. .......2006-07-13
As a teacher I have found this book very practical for my students. It has plenty of resolved exercises, 100% of them focused on Business and Economics. Also this book introduces Statistics in a more "informal" way that makes it easier for a non-mathematician student to understand. It lacks strong statistic theory so if you are looking for a more profound book this is not what you would like to choose. But in terms of exercises is the best.
Great book to understand Statistics!.......2004-07-26
Another fine book by Schaum's outline. For anyone who has lost touch with the world of statistics, this book is a must read. It has clear definitions, examples and complicated explanations if you wish to dig deeper. I recommend this book to all college students, undergraduate and even MBA students. For financial analysis, marketing, and social research, this book is wonderful.
"Very poor in language.".......2004-07-12
"This is a poorly presented text in terms of language."

Book Description
This book reviews both the historical observations of supernovae (SN) seen in our Galaxy over the last two millennia and recorded in East Asia (China, Japan and Korea), Europe and the Arabic dominions, together with modern observations of the remnants of these supernovae. Introductory chapters provide background information about the historical observations and our modern understanding of supernovae and novae, and of supernova remnants (SNRs) and pulsars. Subsequent chapters discuss the historical observations of the well defined historical SN and modern observations of their remnants. These chapters cover Kepler's SN of AD1604, Tycho's SNe of AD1572, the SN of AD1181, the SN of AD1054 which produced the well known Crab Nebula, and the especially bright SN of AD1006. One chapter discusses the young SNR Cassiopeia A, and the proposed sighting of its SN in AD1680 by Flamsteed. Earlier but less certain supernovae of the preceding millennium chronicled in China are also discussed, along with their possible remnants. Other less certain observations of historical SN, and the future potential for additional historical observations, are briefly discussed. This book also includes as an appendix an up-to-date catalogue of over two hundred known Galactic SNRs.

Book Description
Evolutionary theory tells us about our biological past; can it also guide us to a moral future? Paul Farber's compelling book describes a century-old philosophical hope held by many biologists, anthropologists, psychologists, and social thinkers: that universal ethical and social imperatives are built into human nature and can be discovered through knowledge of evolutionary theory.
Farber describes three upsurges of enthusiasm for evolutionary ethics. The first came in the early years of mid-nineteenth century evolutionary theories; the second in the 1920s and '30s, in the years after the cultural catastrophe of World War I; and the third arrived with the recent grand claims of sociobiology to offer a sound biological basis for a theory of human culture.
Unlike many who have written on evolutionary ethics, Farber considers the responses made by philosophers over the years. He maintains that their devastating criticisms have been forgotten--thus the history of evolutionary ethics is essentially one of oft-repeated philosophical mistakes.
Historians, scientists, social scientists, and anyone concerned about the elusive basis of selflessness, altruism, and morality will welcome Farber's enlightening book.
Customer Reviews:
Where Are the "Moral Sentiments?".......2005-06-18
This is a historian's view of ethical thought since the time of Darwin. It recapitulates the undramatic evolution of ethical thought, primarily utilitarianism, in the light of evolution theory. It contains not an iota of original ethical thought, and the thought most akin to evolutionary theory, altruism and reciprocal altruism, is barely acknowledged. What is seriously missing: Hume, Smith, and Hutchinson (Francis, not Woods) and their very similar theories of moral sentiments, despite their point-on-point relevance to altruism and reciprocal altruism.
I'll be the first to acknowledge that evolutionary theory presents new ways of looking at moral problems. Moreover, I'll concede that Social Darwinist misused evolutionary theory to advance their fascist regimes in times past -- and maybe we're still vulnerable. But moral philosophers have not been hibernating; they've been looking for an appropriate paradigm to fit the Modern Synthesis. Where are their accounts? Nowhere in this book!
Some older moral philosophers, e.g., Spencer, Huxley, Sidgwick, and Green, have unsuccessfully tried to incorporate old ethics in the new bag of wine. Robert Wright in "The Moral Animal" faced a similar dilemma (the two books were released at the same time), and Wright was found wanting. But at least Wright tried to envision a new paradigm. Farber concludes that maybe evolutionary theory isn't so great after all, because it leaves us morally bereft. What?
Maybe I am too much of an optimist not to believe that new problems can be solved. It just takes a little intuition and a more expansive notion of history. And I know many people are scared by the shadow of eugenics and other Darwinian misappropriations, but fatalism is not the answer. Had Farber only gone a little farther back in history, just a century, he could have found a nice fit between moral theorists and evolutionary theorists. On the most important parallel in human history, Farber is asleep. Not recommended.

Book Description
One of the bestselling novels of all time, Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code has intrigued and thrilled millions of readers around the world. Now all the artwork, symbols, architecture, and historic locations—over 160 images—are beautifully compiled in this full-color collector’s edition.
A mind-bending code hidden in the works of Leonardo da Vinci.
A desperate race through the cathedrals and castles of Europe.
An astonishing truth concealed for centuries . . . unveiled at last.
While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call. The elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum, a baffling cipher found near the body. As Langdon and a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, sort through the bizarre riddles, they are stunned to discover a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci—clues visible for all to see and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.
The stakes are raised when Langdon uncovers a startling link: the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion—an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. Langdon suspects they are on the hunt for a breathtaking historical secret, one that has proven through the centuries to be as enlightening as it is dangerous. In a frantic race through Paris, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu find themselves matching wits with a faceless powerbroker who appears to anticipate their every move. Unless they can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle, the Priory’s secret—and an explosive ancient truth—will be lost forever.
Instantly catapulted to the top of bestseller lists around the world, The Da Vinci Code is simultaneously lightning-paced, intelligent, and intricately layered with remarkable research and detail. From secrets embedded in the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper to the symbols of ancient Egypt, to the architecture of landmarks such as the Louvre, Westminster Abbey, Rosslyn Chapel, and more, this fully illustrated collector’s edition delivers the complete reading experience of Dan Brown’s riveting novel—from the opening pages to the unpredictable and stunning conclusion.
Customer Reviews:
A great work of fiction made even more enjoyable!.......2007-10-01
This book is the perfect solution for people that want to follow along (checking out the paintings and such), without having to read at your computer googling every couple pages. The first time I read the normal edition (that I had borrowed from the library), but when I went to buy my own copy I saw there was an illustrated edition and bought this one instead. There is no comparison - I enjoyed the book even more with all the extras I could want right there in front of me and can't imagine reading it any other way now.
I do recommend the illustrated edition.......2007-09-03
I would definitely recommend if you're going to read this book that you read the illustrated edition, as I found it was a great help in understanding the points of discussion in the book, myself having limited knowledge on the topics of historical architecture or Leonardo Da Vinci.
The book was interesting enough, there where however a few slow parts that I found difficult to get through. Which leads me to question all the attention the book received in the first place? The book is clearly fiction so to all those who seemed to be offended by it I can only say "Don't believe everything you read".
Its a page turner..........2007-08-22
Great paced, but don't throw out your bible and convert to the church of the feminine for goodness sake...
Awsome Special Edition of Da Vinci.......2007-08-15
I was given this book as a Christmas gift and enjoyed it so much, especially the pictures of the locations the story takes place in, that I bought it to give to someone else.
A Good Mystery Thriller.......2007-08-14
If you haven't even remotely touched/read the book.. I highly suggest you get this Special Edition. If you only have the original paperback, you should still get this Special Edition!
The depicted pictures are of signifant reference to the story-telling. And this book is evidently something to read more than once.
If you have to choose between the movie or the book, I would suggest reading the book. I did not find the movie as entertaining as the book captivating.
