    Book Description

The Demand for Money: Theoretical and Empirical Approaches provides an account of the existing literature on the demand for money. It shows how the money demand function fits into static and dynamic macroeconomic analyses and discusses the problem of the definition (aggregation) of money. In doing so, it shows how the successful use in recent years of the simple representative consumer paradigm in monetary economics has opened the door to the succeeding introduction into monetary economics of the entire microfoundations, aggregation theory, and micro-econometrics literatures.
It also compares and contrasts the theoretical and empirical aspects of the microeconomic- and aggregation-theoretic approach to the demand for money to those of other paradigms, presents empirical evidence using state-of-the-art econometric methodology, and recognizes the existence of unsolved problems and the need for further developments. Finally, it suggests answers to a number of problems raised over previous studies of the demand for money. Most important is the idea that traditional measures of money and log-linear money demand functions are inappropriate in the recent volatile financial environment.

    Book Description

Instant Messaging (IM) is quickly rivaling e-mail as the electronic communications tool of choice in offices worldwide. Already used by over 100 million people globally, IM will be used more often than e-mail by 2005. Employees at 70% of U.S. companies are expected to use IM this year -- whether for legitimate business reasons or for personal purposes. But while business and personal interest in IM is exploding, the potential for problems is growing just as fast.

Instant Messaging Rules addresses the potentially costly legal, regulatory, productivity, security, training, and management challenges that IM brings to the workplace. Complete with sample policies, this timely guide offers workable solutions for establishing and enforcing rules and policies that will let any company maximize the business potential of IM technology. A best practices toolkit for workplace IM usage, Instant Messaging Rules will help employers keep their organizations out of harm's way, while giving employees access to a cutting-edge, productivity-enhancing tool.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars More of the Same From This Author.......2005-07-27

Previously, I have reviewed "The ePolicy Handbook: Designing and Implementing Effective E-Mail, Internet and Software Policies" and "E-Mail Rules - A Business Guide to Managing Policies, Security, and Legal Issues for E-Mail and Digital Communication", the first two books in a "trilogy" by Nancy Flynn of the ePolicy Institute. As I have mentioned in recent presentations on developing effective information technology policies, it is not realistic or recommended to adopt policies without taking a holistic view of the vulnerabilities, threats, and risk appetite of the organization.

From this viewpoint, Flynn's third book in the series, "Instant Messaging Rules - A Business Guide to Managing Policies, Security, and Legal Issues for Safe IM Communication" (210 Pages, The American Management Association, 2004, ISBN 0814472532), offers little more than a rehash of what has been written in the first two titles. However, this does not mean the book is totally without merit and should not be read.

The book borders on redundancy with the first two books with its discussions of threats and vulnerabilities, how to conduct risk assessments, etc. So we can skip any discussion of these topics. What the book excels in is making clear that Instant Messaging, while being a different, "newish" form of communication, is widely misunderstood in terms of the heightened levels of threats and vulnerabilities brought about because of its use. It is this misunderstanding that has many organizations not really realizing that their employees may be using public instant messaging networks at work, or that they are not treating instant messaging logs as possible business records.

So even if you have read one or both of the earlier titles, this one is worth picking up to complete the library. I am sure she will soon have a title on blogs and content will again be redundant, but sometimes this is what it takes to get a point across. And for once, the author has left of the appendix pushing her business and the business of her colleagues. Unfortunately, the only tiles under recommended reading are the books she has written. C'est la vie.

    The Scorecard

Par on a Short Par 4

2 out of 5 stars Timely, but thin on content.......2004-07-24

This book is very timely given the growth of IM in the workplace. However, I found that it is very wordy, with minimal content. Could have been condensed into a short article. On the other hand, if you are new to IM or security, the book will be a good introduction.

        The easy-to-understand-guide to automobile accidents.

Point of possible perception? Point of actual perception? Point of response? Skid tire, scuff tire, metal marks or all three? Weather? Lighting? Trees and shrubs? Parked vehicles, fences, buildings, or other obstructions? Investigating any accident scene is no doubt a complex task. Determining the accurate answers to these questions from participants, and from non-participants as well, can be even harder.

With this book, you will not have to spend fruitless hours re-creating the accident over and over again because of lack of notes, inadequate interviews, or blurry photographs. Instead, you will have everything organized from the start in a clear, cohesive story--fully documented with all the witness statements, notes, photographs, and reports ever needed. Discover how you can use this valuable guide to save time without sacrificing accuracy; it is, simply, the only book you will ever need to fully report any automobile accident scene.

        Book Description

This complete reference provides a wealth of practical information covering all aspects of amateur astronomy. Organized thematically for ease of use, it covers observing techniques, telescopes and observatories, internet resources, and the objects that can be studied. Those new to the field will find tips, techniques and plans on how to begin their quest, and more advanced observers will find useful advice on how to get more from their hobby. Michael E. Bakich obtained a bachelors degree in Astronomy from Ohio State University and a masters degree in Planetarium Education from Michigan State University. He has written numerous original planetarium programs, and gives lectures on astronomy to groups of all ages. He is also a tour guide to eclipses and astro-archaeological sites. Bakich has written two previous books: The Cambridge Planetary Handbook (2000) and The Cambridge Guide to the Constellations (1995), both published by Cambridge University Press.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-07-30

The purpose of this book is to give someone just starting out in amateur astronomy a foundation from which to work. This book accomplishes that task very well. It covers the basics of a wide range of topics. The Author presents this material in a conversational style which makes it an easy read. While this book is very similar in purpose to Dickinson/Dyers's Backyard Astronomer's Guide, it doesn't go into as great a detail on most topics. If you are just starting out in amateur astronomy you should consider buying this book. Two additions I would have liked to have seen in this book were 1.) A section with starmaps, and 2.) A section on how to starhop with examples. These two items should be in any beginners book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book on Mediocre Paper.......2004-02-04

An excellent book that takes a unique approach to explaining the world of amateur astronomy. I use this book more as a reference than a door to beginning to understand the huge world of astronomy (Terence Dickinson in Nightwatch does that best). Has an excellent Equipment section (especially the filters area), great planetary info in the Solar System section, and very handy reference charts in the back of the book.

For the price of this book, you'd expect paper quality to at least be equal to The Backyard Astronomer's Guide (Dickinson, Dyer)-- but it isn't. The paper is cheap and really doesn't stand up well to the heavy page turning I have subjected it to - a minor gripe though. There is stuff in this book that is very hard to find elsewhere. Check it out in your local bookstore -- then buy it here at Amazon for a substantial discount off retail if you like it!

                  Book Description

The Inner Touch presents the archaeology of a single sense: the sense of being sentient. Aristotle was perhaps the first to define this faculty when in his treatise On the Soul he identified a sensory power, irreducible to the five senses, by which animals perceive that they are perceiving: the simple "sense," as he wrote, "that we are seeing and hearing." After him, thinkers returned, time and again, to define and redefine this curious sensation. The classical Greek and Roman philosophers as well as the medieval Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin thinkers who followed them all investigated a power they called "the common sense," which one ancient author likened to "a kind of inner touch, by which we are able to grasp ourselves." Their many findings were not lost with the waning of the Middle Ages. From Montaigne and Francis Bacon to Locke, Leibniz, and Rousseau, from nineteenth-century psychiatry and neurology to Proust and Walter Benjamin, the writers and thinkers of the modern period have turned knowingly and unknowing to the terms of older traditions in exploring the perception that every sensitive being possesses of its life.

The Inner Touch reconstructs and reconsiders the history of this perception. In twenty-five concise chapters that move freely among ancient, medieval, and modern cultures, Daniel Heller-Roazen investigates a set of exemplary phenomena that have played central roles in philosophical, literary, psychological, and medical accounts of the nature of animal existence. Here sensation and self-sensation, sleeping and waking, aesthetics and anesthetics, perception and apperception, animal nature and human nature, consciousness and unconsciousness, all acquire a new meaning.

The Inner Touch proposes an original, elegant, and far-reaching philosophical inquiry into a problem that has never been more pressing: what it means to feel that one is alive.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-29

We bought this for my daughter's first birthday. She immediately loved turning the flaps to find the monsters and pet all the different textures. It's been a couple of months now and it's still one of her favorite books! She sits and turns the pages on her own and loves kissing her reflection in the mirror at the end. A great book I'd recommend to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Best book EVER!.......2007-08-14

I bought this along with about 6 other books for my neice when she was just about a year or so. She has yet to put this one down! It's the perfect size for toddlers as well as very engaging. The premise of the book is that not only is it touch and feel but the toddler has to find where the monsters are hiding. For instance, one hides behind the couch, another under the table, and another in the bathroom cabinet. (My neice now checks all those places to see if her monster friends are hiding there :) Each montster also has a 'feel' soft and fuzzy, coarse, smooth, etc. They are also brightly colored so she works on her colors as well. Overall its a great book and I would highly recommend it.

I was worried about dropping the feeding right before bed. We switched from reading Goodnight Moon to this book before bed, and he didn't even notice there was no bottle because he was so interested in all the great textures. He loves it so much I bought others as gifts for friends!

This is my toddler's favorite book. She loves the last page especially, where there's a mirror, and she kisses her reflection. She loves to pet all the monsters, and she brings it to me to read over and over. A cute book--we both adore it!

I have never seen my kids go as nuts for a book as they did for this one. In the space of an hour, my 1 1/2 year old had me read it 6 times and my husband read it 6 times. Our 2 1/2 year old is just as crazy about it, which was actually a problem because of the fights that ensued. We have had the book a whole week and have to keep it hidden so that they will actually read something else! The touch and feel combined with flaps and great illustrations is apparently a potent combination.

                              Book Description

When a high-tech stalker invades Miami's voting machines, Deputy Elections Supervisor Cady Palmer scrambles to make it right but slams full force into terror, kidnapping, rape, murder---and romance. To the rest of Florida, Miami's pulled off a rare flawless election. But Cady knows it's not. While America purges his party, Florida's outgoing governor holds the state, shuffles key players into office, reclaims his fast track to the White House. Only Cady stands in his way. And she won't stand down despite her boss' threats...not when her stalker closes in...not even to think about the governor's man, Neal Charles. When terror strikes, Neal interjects himself into Cady's flawed election, not for the governor, for Cady. Can she trust the stranger? She must. Soon the two adversaries stand together fending off danger and searching for truth. Together they discover the silent coup marching across the country in ElecTron's state-of-the-art voting machines. And it was so easy. Can she stop it?

Lani Brown pulls off a topical and frightening scenario of 21st century electoral corruption in A Margin of Error: Ballots of Straw. Being the former tabulation manager for one Florida county's election committee, Brown has a unique insight into the machinations of our new voting systems, as well as a keen eye for a story. Her lead character, Cady Palmer, Deputy Elections Supervisor knows that Miami's election has been rigged by a high-tech stalker, but no one wants to hear it. People in power have spent a great deal of money to get the election results they wanted, and they don't care to undermine anything. Soon, Palmer's embroiled in a national conspiracy going to the highest reaches of government. This book reminded me of Don Bruns' Florida conspiracy/caper novel STUFF TO DIE FOR.

On break this summer, I holed up with some of my favorites, Grisham, Roberts, Koontz, Cornwell, Flynn and a Higgins Clark tossed in for good measure. Then with all the election brouhaha in the news, I switched to "A Margin of Error Ballots of Straw," expecting a high-tech rampage of murder, mayhem, and technical speak in overdrive...not. Susan Cady Palmer is a business woman challenged by all the under the table stuff most women in business don't talk about publicly. Her boss is a throwback, straight from Dilbert, but more perverse. Sexual harassment is his special kick-down Cady tool. She's put up with it for years. Until now, when the stakes soar to an all time high and she tells him to, "Put a sock on it." One of those snapshot moments. I wish I'd said that!

Then comes Cady's spy, Neal Charles. Glorious Isabella may not want to take Neal home, but I do. Move over, Cady.

"A Margin of Error: Ballots of Straw" is an unlikely love story. And oh, by the way, I'm a convert. Fiction, sure. But the facts jump off the page. Could a vast right, left, or center conspiracy hijack this or any election? Maybe it already has.

Lani Massey Brown uses well-written fiction to make a point to those of us who are neither political wonks nor computer-types. This book is a real page-turner and a good read for anyone that likes high drama. Even if you don't care about how easy it is to steal an election, the perils that confront the characters in this book make it worth reading just for fun.

It's a realistic novel that will intrigue anyone interested in fair elections, especially for Florida voters.

Realistic scenarios in the voting process that should make you wonder if this could happen or if it has happened.

Makes you wonder if paperless voting machines should be banned.
