Great Reference Book!.......2007-10-03

Don't let the small size fool you, this is a complete introductory textbook on Astronomy!

For amateur astronomers, you won't need anything else for theory. Using it in the field, might be rather cumbersome, as it is so loaded with information, it might be hard to sift out what you want "On the Fly".

Excellent book!

Very basic.......2007-08-05

This book covers the basics on a wide range of topics. The maps are nicely done and easy to read. I have read a number of astronomy books, and this book is among the easiest to understand. The pictures are well done and compliment the text nicely to assist in the particular lesson being learned. If you've had a hard time understanding some other astronomy books, you might want to try this book. I found 3 drawbacks with this book. 1.) The RA/DEC coordinates given for objects in a number of the tables are epoch 1900. More current coordinates certainly could have been used. 2.) The binding is insufficient to be used as a "field guide" for any length of time. 3.) All tables at the back of the book that give times/dates for upcoming events are out of date. They end at 2006 or before.

If you're looking for a basic book on astronomy that covers a wide range of topics AND is easier to understand than most other astronomy books, you should consider buying this book.

Great Book, GREAT Charts (the grey section), but I had to drop a star due to a lack of Messier Photos and the terrible binding. I don't know HOW the review can say "4th - 8th grade reading level". If you find a 4th grader who can absorb this excellent material, he/she's in the wrong class! This book takes you from ignorance to comprehension painlessly. It even lists wonderful items which can be seen with only a pair of binoculars. It explains everything in the charts, listing the Messier objects and describing them, ie. "9th magnitude open-armed galaxy". Includes solar system, moon, stars, and deep space. A well done book, lacking nothing as a "text book", but as a "Field Guide" the above listed deficiences are intolerable. Well worth the small price.

A very Handy Little Reference.......2000-02-11

This little book is a great reference that handles most any issue an amateur astronomer might encounter in his gazing exploits. There is a thorough yet concise treatment of Basic Astronomy, followed by sections on Astronomical Instruments, Stars, The Various planets, and other celestial bodies. The illustrations and charts are wonderful and there is a very thorough treatment of each constellation, many tables, a good bibliography, and index of observatories and planetariums. It amazing what has been packed into this very small book!

Best book, worst binding..........1999-05-23

The one and only knock against this great field guide (and kudos to the others who have pointed out that it's NOT a children's book, but simply the best introductory handbook to astronomy ever published) is that it will fall apart with regular use within a couple of years. This is inexcusable in a field guide, but the book is so wonderful and user-friendly that it still gets my five stars. If I could split the review: the book would get 5 stars, the publisher 0 stars.

But it's so cheap compared to other guides, like the lousy Norton's Star Atlas, that you can afford another when it shreds in your hands after a couple years use at the scope.

Bottom line: great book, but should be sewn-bound!!!

An integrated technique consisted of ozonation and coagulation/flocculation processes was studied, aiming to provide an efficient method for the treatment of stabilized/biologically pre-treated leachates, in order to reduce the organic pollutants' content to concentration values lower than the corresponding limits, imposed by the legislation. Leachates were collected from a municipal landfill site; samples containing around 1000mgl^-^1 COD and BOD"5/COD ratio about 0.17 were treated by using two different processes or combinations between them, i.e. ozonation, coagulation-flocculation, ozonation followed by coagulation/flocculation and coagulation/flocculation followed by ozonation. The application of single ozonation resulted to the efficient removal of color and organic loading, due to the respective oxidation, induced by ozonation; however, COD values lower than 200mgl^-^1 could be only achieved after prolonged reaction times and for high ozone production rates. The coagulation of leachate samples was studied by the addition of ferric chloride or poly-aluminum chloride agents at various dosages. Maximum COD removal rates (up to 72%) were achieved by the addition of 7mM Fe, or of 11mM Al respectively. However, final COD values higher than 200mgl^-^1 were obtained indicating the requirement of an additional treatment step. Pre-ozonation followed by coagulation/flocculation was not found to be an efficient treatment approach for this aim, but coagulation/flocculation followed by ozonation, was proved to be an efficient process for the reduction of COD to lower than 180mgl^-^1.

In this study the leachates derived from used tires were firstly characterized by means of the evaluation of their organic matter content. The leachate from tire powder presented a COD value of 508mgO"2l^-^1 and a TOC of 214mgCl^-^1. The main identified organic substances were constituents of the rubber structure: benzothiazole derivatives, phthalates, phenolic derivatives, hydrocarbons and fatty acids. The application of photo-Fenton treatment was investigated in order to obtain the maximum organic matter removal. When a solar chamber as light source was used (light intensity=500Wm^-^2), the best operational conditions were the following: [H"2O"2]=3703mgl^-^1, [Fe^2^+]=92.1mgl^-^1, initial pH 2.7-3.0, reaction time=100min. After the photo-Fenton treatment at optimum conditions, the reached COD and TOC reduction was 64% and 48%, respectively. The main initial organic substances were eliminated after the reaction and no significant by-products were identified. A complementary treatment consisted of coagulation-flocculation carried out with FeCl"3.6H"2O at pH 12 produced a maximum organic matter removal of 43% as COD and 39% as TOC. A combination of photo-Fenton followed by coagulation-flocculation enhanced the organic matter removal: a reduction of 77% of COD and 64% of TOC was attained.

The treatment and valorization (recycling of water and mineral salts) of dyeing effluents constitutes a major economic and environmental issue. Cotton dyeing using reactive dyes is actually the most polluting in terms of discharge. In order to treat and valorize the effluent from a dyeing process using reactive dyes, the firm Clariant and the LPPE have developed and patented a process allowing the recovery of most of the water and salts present in the effluent and also of a concentrate containing the hydrolyzed reactive dyes and the highly concentrated auxiliaries. This paper describes the coagulation-flocculation-decantation process used to optimize water recovery from the concentrate. Coagulants and flocculants are used in the industry for the treatment of effluents produced by the synthesis of dyes in general (acid, disperse, reactive). Although the settling velocity is relatively low, the results show that it is possible to recycle a great volume of water using a small decanter area, since the concentrate flow rate is low. These effluents are substantially discolored, it possible to envisage recycling them.

Attempts were made in this study to examine the effectiveness of coagulation and flocculation process using ferric chloride and polyelectrolyte (non-ionic polyacrylamide) for the treatment of beverage industrial wastewater. Removal of organic matter (expressed as chemical oxygen demand, COD), total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solid (TSS) using ferric chloride and organic polyelectrolyte during coagulation/flocculation process were investigated. Also, the optimum conditions for coagulation/flocculation process, such as coagulant dosage, polyelectrolyte dosage, and pH of solution were investigated using jar-test experiment. The effect of different dosages of polyelectrolyte in combination with coagulant was also studied. The results revealed that in the range of pH tested, the optimal operating pH was 9. Percentage removals of 73, 95 and 97 for COD, TP and TSS, respectively, were achieved by the addition of 300mg/L FeCl"3.6H"2O, whereas 91, 99 and 97% removal of COD, TP and TSS, respectively, were achieved with the addition of 25mg/L polyelectrolyte to 100mg/L ferric chloride. The volume of sludge produced, when ferric chloride was used solely, was higher compared to the use of combination of polyelectrolyte and FeCl"3.6H"20. The combined use of coagulant and polyelectrolyte resulted in the production of sludge volume with reduction of 60% of the amount produced, when coagulant was solely used for the treatment. It can be concluded from this study that coagulation/flocculation may be a useful pre-treatment process for beverage industrial wastewater prior to biological treatment.

The coagulation/flocculation process was used at laboratory bench scale for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and total phosphorus (TP) in abattoir wastewater. The wastewater was allowed to settle for 24 h and TSS and TP removal efficiencies of 65% and 32% were achieved, respectively. Alum, ferric chloride and ferric sulfate were employed during the coagulation/flocculation process. Alum proved more effective in the reduction of TSS and TP present in the wastewater, whereas ferric sulfate was more effective in the reduction of COD. Increasing the dose of alum to 750 mg/l caused the removal efficiency of TP to reach 45%. The rate of removal of TP linearly increased with increasing doses of alum, resulting in a 98% removal efficiency of TP at 1000 mg/l dose of alum. At a 95% confidence interval, alum dose, coagulation velocity gradient/rapid mixing time (coagulation Gt) and flocculation velocity gradient/slow mixing time (flocculation Gt) were not significant for TSS removal efficiency, but alum dose was significant for TP removal. The addition of a polyelectrolyte to an inorganic coagulant proved effective in the reduction of COD, TSS and TP, cut the amount of coagulant used and reduced the cost of the coagulation/flocculation process. A significant degree of particle elimination by size was produced by using alum; this improved further with the addition the polyelectrolyte.

Confused..........2006-09-28

I'll have to ask my father (Borges or Borges Travel in Tustin) tomorrow why this book says he's buried in Geneva, Switzerland. Oddly he said he's never heard of this book before when I asked him before I picked it up. I take it this is a collection of very short fictitious stories...
