I found this particular book to be on-target and to the point. It is a pleasure not to have to wade through verbosity in order to understand the message. Ms. Shurtleff writes with an obvious first-hand, real world knowledge of her subject as opposed to a pedantic or lecturing posture. The astrolabe was the most sophisticated astronomical instrument of the pre-telescopic age, and one of the most beautiful instruments of any age. Combining a simple observational tool with an elegant analogue computer, it was used for everything from time-telling to surveying, from casting a horoscope to converting among equatorial, ecliptic, and horizon coordinate systems. It was also one of the finest products of mathematically informed craftsmen. In medieval and Renaissance Europe it was emblematic of the astronomer's profession, and often of a nobleman's erudition. In the Islamic world it aided travelers with their daily prayers. Today astrolabes are among the most highly prized instruments of early science.

The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum in Chicago is home to one of the world's three or four great collections of astrolabes. In this volume Roderick and Marjorie Webster, Adler Curators Emeriti, present the Western astrolabes from the Adler's collection. The earliest of these instruments dates from the thirteenth century; others are from the workshops of the greatest craftsmen of the Renaissance. All are described here and illustrated lavishly with photographs showing the front, the back, and additional details such as the maker's signature. Introductory essays by the Websters and Sara Schechner Genuth explain the use of the astrolabe and its role in cultural and social history, while the appendices and bibliography provide information essential to the specialist.

Inaugurating the multi-volume catalogue of the Adler's collection, this book lovingly documents the Western astrolabes, astrolabe-quadrants, and mariner's astrolabes at the Adler.

The main underlining conviction, throughout the book, is the importance of dynamical and systemic approaches to innovation policies. The first part of the book provides the theoretical background for the subsequent more empirical contributions. In the second part, a series of three papers analyse each the development or diffusion of a specific technology developed in the frame of a procurement policy. Book #2 in this set.......2007-08-21

You MUST read book #1 first. In fact this series needs to be read in order (you can skip Fiery Cross, though, it's very slow and uneventful).

After the way Outlander ended you'll want to jump right into this one.

Starts out with Claire back in present time, but now it's 1968--20 years later than when she went thru the stones the first time. She is no longer a nurse, but a doctor.

***I really enjoyed the medical treatment that was detailed in Outlander and the rest of this series. It was wonderful!

She and her daughter (yep) are researching in Scotland trying to learn what happened to Jamie at the Battle of Culloden.

Oh, this was a "burn the midnight oil" type of book with a box of kleenex!

Go ahead and get book #3 Voyager. It's wonderful, too. And the way this one ends, your going to want to read it.

A Fantastic Story of Romance woven in history .......2007-08-01

A friend gave this book to read. Four hours later I was still reading the book. I finished it over the next several days and I thought it was just a wonderful story. I understand that Dragon Fly is the second book in a series, so I won't hesitate to order the first book Outlander. Ms. Gabaldon is such a gifted writer that knows how to weave a story with history, romance and intrigue. I just love this novel and would recommend it to all my friends.

I love to listen to audio cd's. This one is great because the Davina Porter does a really great job of capturing the characters as she reads. I loved it.

"Dragonfly in Amber" is the second book in Gabaldon's "Outlander" series.
Following hints from different Amazon Reviewers I decided to read the first volume of the series as it combine two of my favorite themes: time travel and historical novel.
I was hooked for good and devouring the first three steps of a sextet!

The time travel scheme is more an excuse to allow a modern glance to a historical period, registering and comparing situations with critical (and amusing) sight.
This second part, as it was the first volume, is a terrific historical novel. It is full of every day life details, accurate background and period reconstruction; now crossing the Channel and romping thru pre-revolutionary Paris before returning to Scotland and the doomed Restoration uprising.

The story continues with Clare & Jamie adventures when they try to stop Charles Stuart from starting the second Jacobite upheaval. To accomplish this feat they move to Paris and pose as wine dealers and Jacobite supporters, entering a maze of complex relations with many different groups.
The book starts and ends in 1968, introducing a new character: Brianna, daughter of Clare & Jamie. She is not an easy person to deal with but is as fascinating as her parents.

This is a book full of romance and cloak & sword adventure, yet there is some space to allow deep meditation on transcendent issues as honor, love and meaning of life.
To better enjoy reading this book I recommend to read first "Outlander", however if you are not inclined to do that, the author give enough clues of what has previously happened all along the story.
One last caution: there are several romantic yet explicitly sexual scenes and a couple of violent ones too. So I recommend this book to adult readers only.
