Highly Recommended for Bosses and Workers.......2002-08-01

This book was a delightful surprise. I expected to read yet another business book directed solely toward owners, executives, and managers. This specialized audience will gain quite a lot from this book, but so will "ordinary employees." 22 Keys is an Everyman's book, written in a tone that encourages focused initiative by all sorts of readers. Not only does this approach add value to the book, it makes it much more salable in bulk to companies interested in changing their work environment.

Corporate culture has been defined as "what it feels like to work here." Terez has captured what people are looking for in today's work environment in his exploration of what it takes to create a meaningful workplace. Before going any further, it's important to list the 22 Keys. As you read this list, pause at each one and think about how it relates to your personal situation. Purpose, Direction, Relevance, Validation, Respect, Equality, Informality, Flexibility, Ownership, Challenge, Invention, Support, Personal Development, Dialogue, Relationship Building, Service, Acknowledgement, Oneness, Self-Identity, Fit, Balance, and Worth.

Each key is presented in a chapter heavily seasoned with vignettes that hold the reader's attention. Not all the stories have happy endings, making this book even more valuable. It's not a quick-and-easy-guide-to-Nirvana, but is a realistic presentation. Questions challenge the reader's thinking and, hopefully, stimulate behavior. Actions by others are described to build a sense of confidence that the reader can also do these things and make a difference.

The book has a number of features that increase its readability and usefulness. Reality checks at the end of each chapter focus the reader's attention. Did you get the message? Quotations, liberally sprinkled throughout the book, stimulate thought. I felt the author could have done with a few less quotes, but that's a very minor issue. One of the pages I turned down (there were many) marks a quote by Albert Einstein: "Not everything that can be counted counts, but not everything that counts can be counted." When we're all looking to measure our performance, yet at the same time achieve life-work balance, the quote is meaningful. Ah! Meaningful. The objective of the book: well-achieved. The action plans will help you get started to make a difference in your organization.

This book will be around for a while. It fits comfortably with what needs to be done in the world of work-in the private sector, in government, in non-profits, in education. If it isn't on your shelf yet, now is the time to get a copy, read it, and share it. I read the hardcover edition.

High Fiber Content.......2002-03-18

22 Keys is much more than an interesting book about building a meaningful workplace. It is a practical guide for creating the kind of environment we all wish for. While many books talk about how "nice" it is to have meaning at work, this book has practical excercises for transforming the workforce to one that both improves productivity and retains the best employees. You don't just read the book and put it away, but actually use it to make tangible improvements. Tom's research was fascinating, and he writes in in a style everyone will appreciate. Thus far I've been a fan of Ms. Hampton but she lost me on this one. Once you can't get past the obvious lack of editing the story does hold your attention if you can get past the use of the word Moreso over and over. The character returns to the same ol' thing he was jailed for. In summary, same story, same character same ending.

I am a huge fan of Brenda M. Hampton, I have enjoyed reading all of her books Jaylins still my MAN! I have had mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed it, but it didn't have that RUSH that Brenda is know to give me. The first part of this book How Can I Be Down..I loved that one. In this book I felt Brenda really didn't know what to do with Kiley so she kept him in a bunch of un-necessary drama. And Candi that's what you get. I just can't wait to see what Brenda has in store for us next.

NOTHING LESS THAN THE BEST.......2005-08-19

Brenda gives us nothing less than the best as she always does in No Justice No Peace. What can I say? If you have read her other novels then you know every book she writes is the bomb. I thought that I would be crying to hard over the ending of Jalin's novels to really get emotionally involved with Kiley, but I was so wrong. Brenda weaves a web of sex, love, hustling, murder, family bonds, and then some in this novel. I truly loved it. Brenda Hampton is the best author out there. Not many authors can write 5 star novels EVERY time. Bravo!!!

Speechless..........2005-08-04

I am speechless right now. (Now I must say, that normally, I am really outspoken, so for a "book" to have me speechless is saying a lot..) I am a HUGE Brenda Hampton fan, and with this book she did not disappoint. Mrs. Hampton, you are my #1 author. Keep up the good work. I will read them as quick as you write them girl!

Anyway, This book definitely had me speechless..The first book, "How can I be down?" was good, but the sequel was definitely better. I loved this book from start to finish, but Kiley, wow, what can I say? He wasn't the best man a woman could want, but he "had me at hello"..lol..

I loved his character. I loved how strong he was, but most of all how much he cared for his son. I really appreciate Mrs. Hampton for showing that brothas are by no means "perfect", and they are capapable of loving and caring for their children.

I won't give the book away, but the end had me in tears. I was so glad it ended the way it did. Get this book, or any book by Mrs. Hampton, you won't be disappointed!!

If you read this Mrs. Hampton, know that I appreciate your work and believe I ALWAYS get my money's worth!

But luck runs out and he has to step back into the shoes of the Vengeance Seeker, the disciplinarian, and fighting off all the ladies after giving them a taste of his Awesome Love Thang!

You can't help but fall in love with the multi-faceted Kiley! He's hard but has a touch of compassion, he's loving but direct, he's honorable but has a little bit of dog in him, so prepare to take an eventful drama filled trip with Ms. Hampton as she beweaves the tale of the further evolution of Kiley Jacoby Abrams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The original edition, not the revised edition.......2006-12-05

The reason there are so few reviews for this book is that this is the orginal 1982 edition, not the now more common revised edition of 1989, which has a different subtitle: "The Long Reach of the Gene".

A Classic Biology Text.......2001-06-19

I assume that no one has entered reviews of this book because it is so well known among knowledgeable biologists. For new students not familiar with this book, it is fundamental to research that is now underway in genetics and in sociobiology. In order to establish a foundation for further study in this field, this book is an absolute necessity, along with _The Selfish Gene_ also by Dawkins and the entire body of his lifelong work. To call this work "monumental" is an understatement. It belongs in the same category as Darwin's work, because it is a natural extension of it.

This book is successful on several levels - I read it twice in succession. The first reading dazzles with verbal gymnastics and wit, outrageous situations, fascinating characters. The writing is tight and muscular, like the body of the dancer-heroine, and reads like lightning. But there is a deeper, richer, denser story that beckons underneath all the flash and glamor of a meticulously-detailed Showbiz world - and I read the book very deliberately the second time. Beneath the laugh-out-loud surface, Penny Orloff gives us a dark landscape of the Outsider, the Jew trying to pass for "white" in the world outside the safety of the ghetto. She has fashioned a monstrous alter-ego for her Little Trouper, a Jungian Shadow persona, that rises in spite of her efforts at assimilation - reminiscent of the chilling final lines of the anti-Semitic song in Cabaret, sung by the Master of Ceremonies as he dances with a gorilla: If You Could See Her Like I Do... she wouldn't look Jewish at all. Read carefully, this book takes us into the discomfort zone of self-hatred and the tragedy of genocide from the inside.

Penny Orloff has penned a tour de force for anyone who has dreamed of a career on stage. This is one hiliarious romp through New York theater, Florida dinner theater, the LA scene and the many loves and triumphs of a very talented singer, actress and bed partner. Witty, intelligent, fun, imaginative and a page turner. What will our heroine get into next? Who's bed, who's stage, who's theater? Is she a spy? A comedienne? A singer? An actress? Or is she just all of these things rolled into one. You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this book, but it might help to have a copy of the "Joys of Yiddish" handy.

I couldn't put this book down. From the very first line, I was hooked. I have been a fan of Penny Orloff for years, having seen her in performances at New York City Opera, on Broadway, and in various cabaret performances over a span of two decades. I bought the book after seeing her in her solo show based on this novel. The show dazzled me, but the book is even more spectacular - who could guess a singing actress would be so mesmerizing a literary dreamweaver? The story is a sort of Alice in Wonderland saga, with a large dollop of Candide, whizzed up in a blender with all the Busby Berkeley movies of the 30's. The heroine is a sort of Everyman - from a woman's perspective. This is, for all it's humor, the story of a Hero's Journey... There is a Jungian Shadow Self, down in the protagonist's "basement" - despised, denied, hidden for learned and constantly reinforced shame - which finally finds liberation and flight in a breathtaking conclusion. Fun book! I highly recommend it. Characters are bigger than life, and delightfully screwball. Everyone's Jewish family nightmare! Lots of laughs.
