The Idea Book: Improvement Through Tei/Total Employee Involvement (Japanese Management Series)
ASIN: 1563270102 |
Book Description
Employee involvement has repeatedly proven itself to be the key to any successful continuous improvement program. But to make an employee-driven improvement system work requires careful planning, management, training, guidance, and documentation. This new book offers all that, in a clear, concise but complete presentation.
The Improvement Engine deals with the two aspects of successful programs developed first in Japan:
Kaizen, the goal of continuous incremental improvement, and
Teian, the process of involving employees in reaching the goal. The book outlines an approach any company, division, unit, manager, kaizen promoter, or team leader can take to establish and utilize a kaizen teian program. Based on years of development in numerous companies, it presents methods for surfacing ideas about improvements in the organization and making people more conscious of opportunities for implementing additional improvements.
The book provides a framework for understanding kaizen and suggestions, including:
- offering a model "kaizen sheet" tool for documenting improvements
- presenting examples to guide the promotion, education, and implementation of a kaizen teian system.
As well, you will learn to discern between what shouldn't be done, what must be done, and what you'd benefit by doing. You will also learn why using this simple, disciplined approach helps you get to the core of a problem quickly, thereby reaping the benefits of improvement much more rapidly.
This book will provide you with an in-depth understanding of successful employee suggestion systems for continuous improvement. Using the Japanese model, you will learn to develop employee talents through suggestion activity.

Excellent one-source introduction to EMC & EMC Directive.......1998-10-28
This is a must for anyone concerned with EMC and or the EU EMC Directive and CE marking in general. It deals with both legal and technical issues in language easily understood by the novice, but useful to the well seasoned expert also. NOTE TO AMAZON (REMOVE THIS COMMENT BEFORE POSTING): There is a second edition available but not currently shown at amazon.com. Published 1996. I frequently do seminars on the topic and recommend this book with amazon.com as a source. I would like to know that the up to date edition is available. ISBN: 0951736272

Chromatography text book review.......2007-07-20
The text is readable, but tends to be somewhat repetitive in parts. There seems to be some sections that could be covered more in depth, but for a general overview of chromatography, this books seems to be decent enough. In the graduate course I'm taking, this text book is supplemented with journal articles to fill in some of the missing depth. This structure seems to work well.

Book Description
Are we alone in the universe? As humans, are we unique or are we part of a cosmic society? What is life's future on Earth and beyond? How does life begin and develop? These are age-old questions that have inspired wonder and controversy ever since the first people looked up into the sky. With today's technology, however, we are closer than ever to finding the answers. Astrobiology is the relatively new, but fast growing scientific discipline that involves trying to understand the origin, evolution, and distribution of life within the universe. It is also one of the few scientific disciplines that attracts the public's intense curiosity and attention. This interest stems largely from the deep personal meaning that the possible existence of extraterrestrial life has for so many. Whether this meaning relates to addressing the "Big Questions" of our existence, the possibility of making contact with alien beings, or the potential impact on our understanding of religion, there is no doubt that the public is firmly vested in finding answers. In this broadly accessible introduction to the field, Bruce Jakosky looks at the search for life in the universe not only from a scientific perspective, but also from a distinctly social one. In lucid and engaging prose, he addresses topics including the contradiction between the public's fascination and the meager dialogue that exists between those within the scientific community and those outside of it, NASA's public relations campaign, and what has become some of the most impassioned political wrangling ever seen in government science funding.
Customer Reviews:
Examines the search for extraterrestrial life from a scientific AND social perspective .......2007-07-07
XXXXX
"My goal [for this book]...is to explore...philosophical and societal issues in astrobiology [the branch of biology that investigates the existence of living organisms on planets other than Earth], to encourage members of the scientific community to do so themselves, and to begin a multidimensional dialogue between astrobiologists, people from other disciplines such as the humanities, and the public. The issues at the heart of this discussion deal with the nature of science as an intellectual endeavor and how the science of astrobiology is carried out, the parallel question of why we do science (why the public values it and why the federal government supports it, the philosophical and societal significance of finding (or of searching for and not finding) it, and the theological and religious implications of the potential for life elsewhere."
The above is taken from the preface of this extremely interesting and slim book by Dr. Bruce Jakosky, Associate Director of Science in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado (at Boulder).
This book asks a lot of questions and tries to answer those questions.
Here is the main theme of each of its chapters:
Chapter (1): Asks scientific questions and answers them. For example, what is it about the nature of life on Earth that suggests that there could be life elsewhere? What processes are responsible for producing the present architecture of our solar system? How did these same processes play out in other planetary systems and thus what is the potential for life beyond our solar system?
(2): Explores the question, "What is life?" This is a difficult question to answer but this chapter does a good job in answering it.
(3): Discusses the question, "Is astrobiology a science?" (The author defines astrobiology as "a discipline that involves trying to understand the origin, evolution, and distribution of life within the universe.") Explains how science works in general and what science is.
(4): In this chapter, the nature of what is called "historical science" is explored along with examples taken from recent astrobiological thought.
(5): Why we do science is discussed in this chapter. This topic touches on a variety of key issues. Examples include the roles of basic science versus applied science, personal and societal motivations for science, the role of astrobiology in the process of exploring the universe, and the role that this exploration plays in our society.
(6): "Would the discovery of life [including intelligent life] elsewhere have an impact on religion?" The answer to this question has important implications for how society deals with the relationship between religion and science.
(7): "Astrobiology...touches in significant ways on the larger society. [Astrobiologists] do research that touches on issues with strong intellectual and emotional connections to the public." This chapter explores some of these connections. Also looks at how scientists expend little effort to discuss their work as it relates to society and what can be done about this.
This is, in my view, a unique, well-written, and engaging book that examines the philosophical and societal issues in science in general and in astrobiology in particular.
Finally, I found that there were two omissions in this book:
(i) This book contains no pictures! Pictures, I feel, would have added to this book and perhaps reduced its wordiness. (By the way, the strange picture on the book's cover (dispalayed above by Amazon) has the title of "DNA Galaxy.")
(ii) As mentioned, this book also discusses the possibility of finding intelligent life elsewhere. Thus, I was perplexed that there was no mention of the SETI Institute. (SETI stands for "Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence.") The scientists at this institute have been searching for over twenty years. I thought not mentioning some of the work of this institute was a major oversight.
In conclusion, this is a rare book that blends science, society, and the emerging discipline of astrobiology. I leave you with this book's final sentence:
"Understanding the universe and the potential and actual distribution of life within it will illuminate our own existence here on Earth and help us to comprehend our own species, our own society, and our own individual lives."
(first published 2006; preface; introduction; 7 chapters; main narrative 140 pages; references and additional reading; index; about the author)

A serious, scholarly, non-metaphysical discussion of life in outer space........2006-11-05
Written by Professor Bruce Jakosky, who has been involved in several space missions including the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory rover, Science, Society and the Search for Life in the Universe introduces readers to the field of astrobiology - the fairly new but rapidly growing discipline of striving to understand the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. Chapters address the questions of "Is there life elsewhere?" "What is life?" and "Why do we do science?" as well as the intersection between issues of astrobiology, science, and religion. Accessible to lay readers and scholars alike, Science, Society and the Search for Life in the Universe stresses the importance of adherence to the highest-level quality scientific principles above all, in the quest for greater understanding. Highly recommended for anyone genuinely interested in a serious, scholarly, non-metaphysical discussion of life in outer space.

Book Description
Evolution is a fundamental process that cuts across boundaries of art and science and has beguiled thinkers for ages. This collection of articles about all aspects of evolution is a feast of challenging ideas, drawing together world-renowned thinkers and communicators with their own intriguing insights. This impressive cast of contributors takes on such questions as: Why and how do civilizations and societies change over time? Why do our cells develop the way they do? Why are some villages still villages while others have grown into vast cities? Can we learn from our evolutionary past to plan a better future for our health and society? Tracing the history of biological evolution, through the evolution of cultures, society, science and the universe, contributors such as Stephen Jay Gould, Freeman Dyson, and Martin Rees address these mysteries by considering parallels from all levels of life. From the evolution of the embryo to the evolution of a star, common threads emerge to tell a fascinating story with surprising implications.
Customer Reviews:
Eight Enlightening Essays on Evolution. Engaging. Excellent........1999-03-25
In this slim volume is a gathering of eight enlightening essays that have, as their thematic nexus, the concept of evolution. The contributors have written on evolution in terms of: biology and its historical roots (an essay that brought me back to a unique course I took in my freshman year at Harpur College SUNY); devolopment of the embryo; human history since the last ice age; the city; developmental biology and the emergence of human capacities; the novel; the cosmos; and the unfolding, tool-driven revolutionary birth of science. This is informative intellectual thinking at its best. Highly recommended. Reviewed by Gerry Stern, founding partner, Stern & Associates and HRconsultant.com InfoCenter.

Book Description
This conference covered the field of few-body problems in nuclear, atomic, and molecular physics as well as astrophysics. It dealt with theoretical and experimental aspects of all these fields where the most recent developments were presented by experts in these fields. Some questions discussed at the conference were: how the interaction between various nucleons (protons and neutrons) lead to the physical observables in light systems, how particles like protons are excited themselves and how multi-quark systems are formed, as well as what is the role of relativity in all these.

Book Description
The eyes of the world are watching
A powerful world leader is expected to join the Hollywood elite at a star-studded ceremony to be broadcast around the globe. But security has been severely compromised -- and a plot is already in motion to turn the Los Angeles Chamberlain Auditorium into a gruesome slaughterhouse.
When an on-line "Trojan Horse" detected by the CTU cyber unit sends up red flags, rogue operative Jack Bauer is called into action. He has less than twenty-four hours to prevent an unthinkable act of death and destruction from occurring -- a televised massacre intended to topple a foreign government and bring terror into millions of American households.
The countdown is on.
Customer Reviews:
Keeps in the spirit of the TV series.......2007-01-15
Good writing. Keeps the reader's interest with plot twists and action. However, the timeline does not appear to be over a 'real time' 24 hours.
24 Declassified:Trojan Horse.......2007-01-12

if you are a 24 fan.......2006-11-10
it was a slower read than the previous books but enjoyable, none the less
must read for 24 fans.......2006-05-26
most books based on action packed tv shows don't translate well when someone writes a book about it. the author did an excellent job here.
all the hollywood stars are getting ready for the silver screens awards. terroist are planning a little surprise party that involves a computer virus that will wipe out the computers in the western world causing mass chaos and confuson.
this book goes from a new drug that jack is tracking down to mexico and back. it will keep you up trying to figure out how it ends. it does take place in season 1 because they use his wife terri in here. but it is still a good read and might even make a good movie.
Third verse...a bit different from the first........2006-04-09
First, check out my 5-star review of Operation Hell Gate. Second, I have not read Veto Power, so I can't compare to that one but I'll do my best.
This was a good read and all 24 fans should pick it up. Chappelle and Milo get much more time then in the first one, and Doris and Edgar Stiles drop in as well. Teri has her own subplot in the night hours, but at least this one is interesting. Tony also has his own thing going for most of the book and spends almost the entire day in Mexico. It also goes to a couple other characters from time to time and at first there may seem like there is no point to it but it all ties together at the end.
Well, now for some flaws. First, there were too many characters that were not needed. Jack must have gone thorugh 20 different CTU, FBI, SWAT personnel when we could go on without them. Also Marc reuses some first and last names already used in the 24 universe (Lonnie, Dodge, another agent named Frank, if you remember there was a Frank Hensley in hell Gate) but the biggest shocker is a black actor named Chip Manning (Curtis Manning, anyone?). I'm sure he could have come up with a better name then that.
Another thing that annoyed me was too many villains died too qucikly. In the middle chapters you will run into some bad guys that seem really cool but they die in the next hour. I won't spoil who they are, but you might find yourself disapointed that they did not last as long as Habib Marwan or Stephen Saunders.
The last major thing was at the end, so many issues were not resolved. Several characters were last seen in serious jeapordy but we do not know what happened, even in the Epilogue.
But, it's still a wild ride, and it's a nice addition to the novels but I still think Operation Hell's Gate is a better choice.
