          Book Description

Miller Not-for-Profit Reporting is organized to focus first on existing pronouncements and proposed pronouncements that are expected to be issued in the near future. Those pronouncements apply directly to not-for-profit organizations and are covered in Part I, "Introduction and Background." Part II, "Accounting for Not-for-Profit Organizations," addresses accounting for individual account types and transactions recorded in the books of a not-for-profit organization. Part III, "External Financial Reporting," deals with external financial reporting, and Part IV, "Regulatory Financial Reporting," deals with regulatory reporting in the government arena, including requirements of the OMB Circulars and federal and state tax rules.

This volume analyzes all FASB Statements to the extent that they relate to reporting by not-for-profit organizations. Accordingly, not all of the recent pronouncements will be reported on in depth. As we did last year, we encourage you to use the Miller Complete Library for Business--consisting of the Miller GAAP Guide, the Miller GAAP Implementation Manual, and the monthly Miller GAAP Update Service--also published by Harcourt--to keep current on accounting and reporting matters that pertain to all entities.

                  Book Description

The Japanese government is becoming less involved in shaping industrial policyDSbut what does this imply for the openness of Japanese markets to foreign competition? In an extensive study of 'post-development' Japan, Ulrike Schaede argues that, contrary to what many have suggested, the reduced role of government regulation may not result in more open markets. Instead, as has happened throughout Japanese history, deregulation and the recession of the 1990s have once again led Japanese trade associations to assume important regulatory functions of their own. They do this through 'self-regulation'DSsetting and enforcing the rules of trade for their industries, independent from the government. As a result, many Japanese markets are now effectively governed by incumbent firms, in particular in terms of structuring the distribution system. As the record of postwar antitrust enforcement reveals, Japan's antitrust system considers most activities of self-regulation, other than outright price-fixing, as legal. Using interviews and a unique database of trade association activities, this book concludes that increasing self-regulation renders both government deregulation programmes and international trade negotiations ineffective in opening Japanese markets. The implications of self-regulation for Japanese industry are mixed: while internationally competitive firms can use self-regulation to reduce competition at home in order to compete more forcefully abroad, some domestic industries, such as the financial sector, may suffer from increased self-protection.

                  Book Description

Viewed historically as the lapdog of business, bureaucratic and political interests, Japan's Fair Trade Commission has had mixed success in promoting its agenda for stronger antimonopoly policy since the early 1970s. Dr Beeman unravels antimonopoly politics in Japan through an analysis of the diverse interests of industry, government, and other parties to reveal how and why antimonopoly policy has made important inroads yet ultimately failed to gain deep acceptance in Japan.
Employing extensive use of primary research materials and numerous interviews of key participants from government and industry, Dr Beeman finds predictable patterns of change and continuity in antimonopoly policy from the perspective of legal scholars or from the narrow context of Japan's key industrial sectors. The book provides a unique insight into an agency and a policy that has often been criticized within Japan as too stringent and from outside Japan as too lax.

5 out of 5 stars Brings the Japan Fair Trade Commission to life!!!!!!!.......2002-12-26

This is not just an exploration of Japan's antimonopoly policy, it is an exploration of life. We are exposed to a society's search for it's own conscience. Dr Beeman presents the Fair Trade Commission as a fully developed character who's trial and tribulations truley engross the reader. I was left with not just a greater knowledge of antimonopoly policy in Japan, but with a renewed zest for life. The world is a better place with this publication of Dr. Beeman's life work - we can only hope that more people will adhere to the principles presented here.

                                    Book Description

The night sky has always fascinated artists and scientists, awed by its beauty and perplexed by its meaning. Star Struck illustrates some of the rarest and most beautiful books in the history of astronomy, drawn from the Huntington Library's collections and supplemented with Hubble Telescope deep field images supplied by NASA and with illuminated manuscripts from the J. Paul Getty Museum.

The history of astronomy is marked with observations that failed to conform to philosophical beliefs and with the social, political, and spiritual collisions these inconsistencies brought. The ancient Greeks knew the Earth must dominate the universe, but their observations of irregular planetary movements did not easily confirm their conviction. Nicholas Copernicus, an official of the Catholic Church in Poland, articulated a theory of a heliocentric universe--but he did so cautiously, publishing his work in the year he died in 1543. More than a half-century later, Galileo looked at the Moon through one of the earliest telescopes and used this new perspective to defend the Copernican model, for which he spent the last decade of his life in prison. The copy of Copernicus's De Revolutionibus now in the Huntington's collections was once owned by Edwin Hubble, who made extraordinary discoveries 75 years ago while perusing the night skies from California's Mount Wilson Observatory.

                                      Book Description

Written over a period of 17 years, the Handbook of Chemical Risk Assessment exhaustively examines and analyzes the world literature on chemicals entering the environment from human activities. The three volumes cover chemicals recommended by environmental specialists of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other resource managers. The choices were based on the real or potential impact of each contaminant and on the knowledge available about their mitigation. The information for each chemical includes source and use; physical, chemical, and metabolic properties; concentrations in field collections of abiotic materials and living organisms; deficiency effects; lethal and sublethal effects; and proposed regulatory criteria for the protection of human health and sensitive natural resources. Each chapter selectively reviews and synthesizes the technical literature on a specific priority contaminant and its effects on the environment. Successful risk assessment relies heavily on extensive and well-documented databases. They often include too much - or too little - information about too many chemicals. Of the hundreds of thousands of chemicals discharged into the environment, only a small number have sufficient information to attempt preliminary risk assessment. Sold only as a three volume set, the Handbook of Chemical Risk Assessment provides you with the exact amount of information you need in a single resource.

Joel Achenbach (Why Things Are) describes Captured by Aliens as a travelogue, a record of his strange journey into "alien country." With Carl Sagan as a sort of totem animal on this spirit quest (in fact, one of the author's first stops is Sagan's living room), Achenbach plots an eccentric course through the land of UFOs and the search for extraterrestrial life, going from NASA headquarters in Washington, DC to local MUFON meetings, from an asteroid-blasted quarry in Belize to a Las Vegas hotel room in which he's hypnotized by an alien abductee. He even visits the set of the X-Files. (Achenbach reveals Gillian Anderson's very un-Scully-like take on alien beings: "[T]hey operate, vibrate--this is going to make me sound like a complete nut--they vibrate on a different energy level than we do.")

With the investigative skill of a seasoned reporter (which Achenbach is, for the Washington Post) and the wit and charm of an NPR commentator (which he also is), Achenbach turns out to be the perfect companion for such a cosmic road trip. This curious, earnest, and frequently hilarious writer proves equally at ease with legit figures like Sagan and NASA administrator Dan Goldin as he is with self-described "Starseeds" (aliens in human bodies) and technophiles like Mars-booster Bob Zubrin. Achenbach knows his science, but he always brooks just the right amount of nonsense. --Paul Hughes

                                      Book Description

The great minds of the human race, employing ever more fabulous technology have peered into the depths of space and discovered that we exist on a tiny speck in a universe that is vast beyond comprehension. But there is one thing we have yet to discover: a single scrap of extraterrestrial life. We have heard no signals, found no alien picnic trash. The aliens who allegedly abduct people in the middle of the night have a strange way of evaporating in the harsh glare of scientific scrutiny. And so at the turn of the millennium we are in an intellectual fix: we know the universe only through its structure, its physical properties, its chemistry. Of its biology we can only guess. Are there creatures out there like us, with big brains and restless spirits? Or are we, for all intents and purposes, alone? If aliens exist -- if there really are intelligent creatures zooming around the galaxy -- then where in tar-nation are they?

Washington Post reporter Joel Achenbach -- the author of Why Things Are and a commentator for National Public Radio -- puts the ET debate into the context of the space program, discoveries in astronomy, and the hunger for meaning and spiritual nourishment in an era when science often doesn't provide the answers that people desire. He finds that the topic of extraterrestrial life is poisoned by wishful thinking, by the natural human yearning to make contact with our brothers and sisters in space.

But ha also finds some fascinating, admirable, and maddening characters who have pursued the truth about extraterrestrial life: Cad Sagan, the brilliant astronomer who brought the cosmos to the masses; Dan Goldin the cantankerous head of NASA who still believes in the dream of the Space Age; Henry Harris, a former Las Vegas lounge singer who is assigned the job of figuring out how to get a spaceship to Alpha Centauri; and various and sundry ufologists, experiencers, spiritualists, and channelers for whom the aliens are an ever-present reality.

In this fascinating, funny, and spirited book, Achenbach discovers that the search for life elsewhere leads us on a looping road back to the fundamental questions about life on Earth. To think coherently about extraterrestrial life, we first must come to terms with who we are, why we exist, and what it means to carry around in our cells an evolutionary history that took tour billion years to unfold Achenbach's message is that it is a wonderful and thrilling thing to be a sentient human being -- a creature capable of foolish romanticism -- in a universe that is mostly rocks and gas and dust and empty space.

1 out of 5 stars compared with any alien life, we're morons.......2007-03-15

this book was given to me as a joke for my birthday. and indeed it is. i never heard of this author until now. clearly a skeptic and conservative (because they go together, right?) this author did little research on the subject. the research he did do, i would call "middle of the road" research (or as a debunker trick, if you can't critize the data, critize the people). meaning, find people (timothy leary & richard hoagland ?!?!?! nobody took leary seriously and hoagland is just amusing), articles, stories that aren't too hard to argue or write off as a hoax. with regards to roswell (who discusses roswell anymore?): pick a theory, pick any theory. there are so many different theories on it, there is one for any belief. there may be some wishful thinking and misunderstanding in the field, certainly. any field of research, spirituality and health has it. it's a nonissue. "To call god an 'unknown' seems unfair. many people feel they know god intimately." (p. 40). huh? how is that different than people who believe in ufo's? there's more proof of ufo's than there is of god's existence. clearly this is an outdated book with outdated arguments. i read other reviews on this thing, and well, if you follow their reasoning and beliefs, this book is for you. otherwise, this author is a perfect example of the type of journalist Terry Hansen describes in Missing Times: news media complicity. bottom line is this: if you are a nonbeliever, no amount of evidence will do. if you believe, no amount of evidence is needed. take your pick, as long as it isn't this book.

                                      3 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-12-03

Good, but I expected better. I read Joel's daily blog on the Washington Post website, where I have been enjoying him for years. Sort of a mixture of Carl Sagan and Dave Barry. In this book though... the humor didn't come through. Nothing in here made me crack a smile. Still, I much enjoyed parts of it. I found the first one third to be the best, as it summarizes the history of the search for extraterrestrial life. He paints an interesteing picture of Sagan, and it's not blind worship. I was inspired to go back and watch "Cosmos" again after reading this. The book goes downhill from the first third, going into loony UFO territory, and ending with random musings on life, the universe, and everything.

4 out of 5 stars Fun to read, but mixes apples with oranges.......2004-04-02

This lively, amusing book touches on many ways that people relate to the cosmos, from astrophysicists to the Heavens Gate cult. That is a virtue, in the sense of providing the reader with a wide variety of material. It also is a weakness, in that highly reputable scientists are implicitly equated with flakes. The author should have drawn a sharper distinction between those he took seriously and those he found ridiculous. The net effect is to introduce a giggle factor into our views of anyone who finds the external universe fascinating and relevant to our future.

Achenbach is a bit too worshipful toward Carl Sagan and former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin. In particular, he glosses over the fact that Goldin's faster, better, cheaper policy led to three major mission failures in the late 1990's.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for this book.......2003-08-06

This is the best book I have read on this subject. A very well written book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that wonders about life on other worlds. Although Joel does not give an answer he does a wonderful job portraying the people that are looking for answers from the "kooks" to scientists such as the late Carl Sagan. In fact for anyone that is a Sagan fan this is a must read. Joel is a great author.

5 out of 5 stars Captured By Joel Achenbach.......2001-12-23

When I first picked up this book at the store, I feared it would be yet another credulous description of assorted alien abductions. But after I looked at it more closely, I realized that it promised to be quite rational and even entertaining.

I wasn't disappointed. "Captured By Aliens" is a pleasure to read, and Achenbach is often very funny.

Achenbach is an unapologetic skeptic who explores several strands in what the book's subtitle calls "the search for life and truth in a very large universe": SETI (the Search for Extraterretrial Intelligence), which looks for radio emissions from other technologically advanced civilizations; the search for life on other planets, including the heated debate about whether the Viking landers or the famous Antarctic meteorite show that there is (or was) life on Mars; the chances of finding intelligent life anywhere besides earth (assuming, for the moment, that you can even find it here); and the heartfelt if wildly inconsistent beliefs of UFO enthusiasts and others who are close to the fringe.

The book is also useful as a brief and sometimes moving biography of Carl Sagan, the astronomer and skeptic who wanted very badly to believe but, in the end, found nothing that satisfied his rigorous standards of proof.

The only criticism I have of "Captured By Aliens" is that it sometimes reads like a disjointed string of short articles rather than a sustained narrative. This is not surprising, since several of the chapters appear to have been derived from pieces that were published in magazines. That being said, this small flaw actually makes the book easier to enjoy in several sittings.

If you enjoy authors who examine the lore of aliens with a skeptical wit, you might try David Darlington's "Area 51: The Dreamland Chronicles" or Phil Patton's "Dreamland: Travels Inside the Secret World of Roswell and Area 51." Darlington and Patton are less conspicuously skeptical than Achenbach, but their books are nonetheless an interesting exploration of a modern mythology. Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot," to which Achenbach often refers in his book, is also worth reading for what it has to say about Sagan's views on the search for life in the universe.

                                        Book Description

Set in the fictional subdivision of Galapagos Estates, Rattled is a very funny look at what happens when soccer moms, animal rights activists, dishonest real estate developers and, of course, rattlesnakes, get together and fight for ascendancy in the rapidly developing New Jersey suburbs. All Heather wants there is a nice house. Well, a nice house and a nice piece of land. And of course a basement gym, a master bath with radiant heat, Jacuzzi and his-and-her toilets. She could make do without a media room if she had to. After all, the pioneers hadnt had plasma TV, and theyd survived. Heather is not your average suburban housewifeor maybe she is. But when her fortuitous meeting with an endangered species of rattlesnake sets this first novel in motion, you may find yourself feeling sorry for the snake. Sharp, biting, and absolutely entertaining, Rattled is brilliant social satire.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A fun read!.......2007-08-06

Rattled was a very entertaining book to read. Heather Peters, although ridiculous, is a great character. I found Rattled to be very Carl Hiaasen-esque with a woman's touch. Is this a serious read? Definitely not, but that is why I liked it so much! There is a good bit of truth in this book- especially dealing with the issue of McMansions taking over wildlife areas, and the fall out that occurs as a result.

4 out of 5 stars Rattled, or rattled snaked.......2007-07-31

I liked this book. Light reading but I couldn't put it down till I finished it. I'm in the Real Estate business and totally enjoyed reading about what happens when an old farm becomes an exclusive housing development for city people. As you are reading the book you can see the county roads, landscapes and then the expansive houses of the new development. Throw in a few kids, and some poor local people and watch what happens. The handyman told her to get rid of the rattle snake, but did the city lady listen?? City people never listen to poor dumn local folks.

3 out of 5 stars Parody of Suburban Development .......2007-07-29

I read this book after seeing it on so many "lists" on Amazon.com

This is one of several books I've recently read that makes being Mom in an affluent suburb sound as if it's a competition in perfection.

Most of the characters seem a bit of a caricature, but that's part of what makes the book so amusing. However, it all seemed a bit tiresome and sad as well - being consumed in an endless quest for the perfect home, the perfect child, the perfect body, hair, clothing. But I guess that was the point. Overall, the book was fast paced and held my interest and was, sadly, a vivid depiction of the development of rural areas, the communities that get built and the people who move there.

The book was well written, but I guess it was hard to like the book as much as I might have because none of the characters was particularly likeable, so you had little to no emotional connection. The book is probably a good example of it's genre - a satire or parody - but it's not my style - but it may be yours.

                                        1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-06-15

Author had NOTHING to say. Nobody's life could be THAT boring. Come on. Author seems bitter and jealous of attractive women.

                                        I want my money back.

5 out of 5 stars Best suburbanite humor available at any price.......2007-04-14

The person who wrote that book is clearly a student of the suburban female condition! You'd have to listen in at every women's locker room in every racket and swim club from Montauk to Montclair and to get the private glimpse of privileged suburbia that Ms. Galant provides in Rattled. Save your money and your time and just buy her book. An easy read. Can't wait for her next book.
