Customer Reviews:
Good Basic Overview.......2006-11-12
This book is a good introduction to retirement plans. It explains the pros and cons of each type of plan in plain English. This book is recommended for people who want a good background before they talk with a plan administrator, financial planner or tax professional.
However, for people who want more detailed information on how each plan works, especially if you're a sole proprietor, I would suggest "Creating Your Own Retirement Plan: A Guide to Keoghs and IRAs for the Self-Employed" (Nolo Press, 2002) by Amy Delpo, John C. Suttle and Twila Slesnick instead.
Too little, too simple.......2006-11-07
Not quite enough information or detail for my use. Perhaps useful for the very small business or for a very basic introduction.
A tough topic tamed.......2003-11-24
For business owners, senior execs and their advisors, Jean's book is straight forward reading with valuable charts and graphs. It includes tips and tricks from seasoned advisors and ample references.
Beyond 401(k)s for Small Business Owners.......2003-11-18
This book has a narrow audience and most people would have no interest. But if you, like I, own a small business: buy this book!!! The subject (keeping the money you have earned) is quite complex, with many different plans and programs. This book makes you aware of your options and shows you the steps you need to take to put each plan in action. Perhaps the best benefit of all is a review of the costs and complexity of each plan type. A plan that can shield you from taxes, but costs a fortune to put in place and maintain, has obvious limitations. But the salesperson trying to sell you that type of plan may not give you all the detail on the long term costs. If you own a business and ever plan to retire, buy this book.
WOW - so when was this topic easy to understand?.......2003-10-29
"Mumbo jumbo best left to the professionals" is how I always felt when confronted with decisions on these topics. Atty Sifleet has made this an easy read and so understandable. Even a one-person company techie like me can figure it out. Congratulations Jean!

Rutherford, M. Louise. The Influence of the American Bar Association on Public Opinion and Legislation: A Dissertation in Political Science Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Cloth. $95. * Rutherford analyzes the significance and possibilities of the different policies and activities of the American Bar Association, the programs initiated to effectuate such policies, and the cogency of their programs. A descriptive study, it offers a painstakingly detailed record of the Bar Association's influence, as well as suggestions to promote its effectiveness. Valuable for its insights into the ABA during the 1930s, it is equally worthwhile as a model for analytical studies of professional associations.
Book Description
Galileo's 1632 book, Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic and Copernican, comes alive for twentieth-century readers thanks to Maurice Finocchiaro's brilliant new translation and presentation. Condemned by the Inquisition for its heretical proposition that the earth revolves around the sun, Galileo's masterpiece takes the form of a debate, divided into four "days," among three highly articulate gentlemen.
Finocchiaro sets the stage with his introduction, which not only provides the human and historical framework for the Dialogue but also admits the reader gracefully into the basic non-Copernican understanding of the universe that would have been shared by Galileo's original audience. The translation of the Dialogue is abridged in order to highlight its essential content, and Finocchiaro gives titles to the various parts of the debate as a guide to the principal topics. By explicating his own critical reading of this text that is itself an exercise in critical reasoning on a gripping real-life controversy, he illuminates those universal, perennial activities of the human mind that make Galileo's book a living document. This is a concrete, hands-on introduction to critical thinking. The translation has been made from the Italian text provided in volume 7 of the Critical National Edition of Galileo's complete works edited by Antonio Favaro. The translator has also consulted the 1632 edition, as well as the other previous English translations, including California's 1967 version.
Galileo on the World Systems is a remarkably nuanced interpretation of a classic work and will give readers the tools to understand and evaluate for themselves one of the most influential scientific books in Western civilization.

Book Description
Because of the increasing need for ever better performing materials endowed with specific properties, macromolecular engineering has become a useful tool for designing well-architectured polymers (telomers, telechelics, stars, dendrimers, alternating, block- and graftcopolymers). These polymers are nowadays seeing an enormous growth. Among them, fluoropolymers are seen as high value added materials in many applications ranging from surfactants, optical fibers, biomaterials, coatings, to membranes for fuel cells. Indeed, the relationship between structure of the monomer to the properties of the polymers is of increasing interest so that these properties are tuned for the most appropriate applications. As most fluoropolymers are prepared from radical synthesis, this book devotes various parts on the use of the controlled radical (or pseudo-living) polymerisation of fluoromonomers leading to discoveries of thermoplastic elastomers or original surfactants for polymerisation in supercritical CO2.
Well-Architectured Fluoropolymers: Synthesis, Properties and Applications, is composed of five chapters starting with a general introduction outlining basic concepts. Emphasis is placed on recent developments, and each chapter describes comprehensive techniques of synthesis of well-defined fluorotelomers or polymers, their properties, characterisations, and their applications, for immediate use by todays engineers, industrial and academic scientists, and researchers.
The book has been arranged to enable self-managed reading and learning. It is both a source of data and a reference.
- On the synthesis, properties and applications of fluoropolymers: remarkable, high value added materials applied in surfactants, optical fibres, biomaterials, coatings and membranes for fuel cells.
- For immediate use by today's engineers, industrial and academic scientists, and researchers
- Written to enable self-managed reading and learning, being both a source of data and a reference.

Customer Reviews:
A little amateurish, yet compelling.......2007-05-28
If you can overlook some clunkers of plot, this story of a psychiatrist bent on redeeming her reputation and her life by helping bring a "wild child" to civilization will capture you. Not only is there the mystery of who Alice is and how she came to be virtually raised by wolves, there's also the story of what makes a family and how we create community.
Not the most believable tale in the world, but a heck of a lot better-written than many titles on the best-seller list (Mary Higgins Clark, anyone??).
emotionally intense and heart-rending.......2007-02-21

Magic Hour is a fascinating story about a feral child discovered in a small town and the psychiatrist who saves her.
Dr. Julia Cates was the top child psychiatrist in LA until one of her patients went on a high school shooting spree. Now trying to escape her ruined reputation and her guilt (Why didn't she see what was going to happen and find a way to prevent it?), she returns to Rain Valley in the Pacific Northwest at the request of her sister Ellie. Ellie Barton, beauty queen turned chief of police, is faced with her most difficult case yet. A mysterious child who cannot or will not speak has turned up in the center of town, high in a tree and clutching a wolf cub to her chest. She is a very rare case, a feral child, raised in the wild by wolves and no one knows what to do or how to find her family.
Julia may be the only person who can reach the poor girl so she answers her sister's plea for aid. Alongside of Max Cerrasin, town physician, Julia struggles to reach the young girl, whom she has named Alice, in honor of what becomes the child's favorite book. As the bond grows strong between Julia and Alice, Julia begins to find faith in herself again and finds she is willing to risk everything if it means "saving" Alice. At the same time, feelings begin to develop between Max and Julia but he has his own personal demons to face before he can give her his heart.
Magic Hour touched my heart in a way few stories do. I was so emotionally involved in little Alice's story that it was hard to get her out of my mind even after I finished the book. The terrors and struggles she went through leading up to Ellie finding her wound her deeply, and in turn wound the reader as we experience them through "Girl's" (for this is all she knows herself as) eyes. We are even thrust deeply into Girl's bond with "Wolf," her only companion and experience her agony over being separated from him during her long and trying emotional recovery. I was heartbroken many times over, almost having to pull off to the side of the road (I listened to the novel in my car while driving) in several instances when I found tears pouring down my cheeks over Girl's internal struggles and memories. I was also overjoyed in the moments when she finally accepts her new name and new life as that step is a huge leap in her recovery.
While there is romance in the story found in Julia and Max's growing relationship, and another love story that is hinted at but not developed until the end of the book, Alice really is the pivotal character in Magic Hour. This book is all about her and the relationship she forges with Julia through months of therapy as she tries to find her way out of the dark pit of her fear. Her return to the civilized world is long and taken in small measured steps, sometimes backwards, but that makes the journey all the more rewarding in the end. Alice is also crucial to Julia's own emotional recovery as she deals with the fallout and her personal guilt resulting from the LA tragedy.
Every single character is strongly developed and each one has his or her own private struggles and fears to overcome. Max struggles with events in his past that led him to hide out in Rain Valley. Ellie's lack of confidence impedes her personal journey as she discovers who she really is and what is most important in her life. And these are just a few of the beloved townsfolk who bond together in their times of greatest need.
Suzanne Toren is brilliant in her performance of Magic Hour. Though this story is very powerful already, Toren's skill at bringing your emotions to the forefront adds so much more intensity to the story. You can truly feel every single thing the characters are experiencing just through the voices brought to them.
Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah is so emotionally intense and heart-rending that it is sure to touch everyone who reads it.

A Great Story-You Could Feel the Emotions. A+ for Hannah.......2007-02-17
When Ellie Cates, of whom is a police chief receives a call that a little girl is stuck high up in a tree, everyone in the small community there is gathered around it. The little girl is way up high holding on to a wolf dog, and is absolutely terrified of something. Ellie gradually gets the child to come down coaxing her with some food. When they finally rescue the child, she is howling, a dirty mess, and of course they take her to the hospital. Who is this child? Ellie couldn't get her to talk.
Ellie and her sister Julia have been estranged for several years now-ever since they lost both of their parents. Growing up they had too many differences and never really got on. But now, Ellie needs Julia's help in this situation with the child. Julia Cates is a well-known psychiatrist in LA, and if anyone can help she can. Not only that, but Julia's practice completely fell apart when one of her patients, a young girl shot several people because she was mentally unstable. When this fact was publicized, everyone all over blamed Julia for not committing this girl, and the parents who lost their kids from the shooting are blaming Julia as well. In fact there was a big lawsuit brought against Julia, but when the judge ruled in her favor, she gets off, and having no more practice, figures she might as well be of help to her sister.
When Julia meets the little girl, whom she finds to be just as Ellie said, she has her work cut out for her trying to get this poor youngster to talk, and work through her trauma-whatever it was. As time passes, though, they try to find the girl's identity, and it is a long time before the real story finally comes to light there. And in the meantime, Julia becomes her foster parent, and hopes to eventually adopt the girl she now calls Alice. But this may not be when someone comes forward claiming to be the father.
Audio CD read by Suzanne Toren .......2007-02-14
I was enchanted by this audio book. Suzanne Toren did a wonderful job narrating the story. I haven't read any of Kristin Hannah's books and I didn't expect much from the story line after having read the brief summary on amazon.com. I bought the audio version because I enjoy audio books narrated by Suzanne Toren and her voice surely lends a magical touch to this audio book.
Beautiful story.......2007-01-12
Magic Hour is indeed a magical read. Kristin Hannah has a special way of conveying the feelings of children in her novels. she is also very good at capturing the mood and atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest. Loved this story. It made me feel for the characters, especially the child.
