    5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Guidebook.......2007-02-08

This is a great basic book for trainers who need to know about being a good trainer, how to effectively formulate and realise training objectives, how lessons can be improved, how to motivate participants, among several other critical topics. It has a lot of tips and practical advice that should help you to become a more effective trainer.

Trainers, like many professionals, are wary of all the garbage that poses as valid information. They need to cut through the noise to get the real meat, and they do not have a lot of time to paddle through superfluous space-filling material that does not contribute to what they need to know. The author of "Basic Training for Trainers", Gary Kroehnert, get right into content. The writing is concise, supported by graphics where needed. Bullet points at appropriate points reinforce what needs to be done to achieve solid accomplishment of objectives. Most chapters have their own application examples as well as references for those who wish to pursue this interesting subject further.

I use the book as a quick reference guide and I find the checklists included very useful and helpful. This book carries pertinent information, but it is organised and written in such a way that is easily digestible. The book is recommended as a resource kit for the trainer or student.

Great book, well written, easy to read. I am a trainer of some 40 years, still training in former Soviet Union, and looking for a book to recommend to new trainers. Found it!

Kroehnert delivers sold basics here. That's why I keep this book as part of my training library.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Basic Guide for First Time Trainers.......2000-10-29

If you have a generic training session to conduct, and want a quick, large format guide to training and training preparation, this is a reasonable choice. I used a few of the checklists for course design. However, for computer training needs, there are better choices such as Paul Clothier's Computer Training book. For general practice and theory of adult learning, I would recommend Robert Pike's Training Techniques book.

3 out of 5 stars Basic, Basic, Basic!!!.......2000-08-29

The book offers extremely limited "trainer" information, and delivers basic common sense information. If you interested in learning more about the field, there are far better "basic" books available on the subject. The format of the book is poorly structured, and doesn't convey needed training knowledge.

    Book Description

Too often, military and law enforcement authorities have found themselves constrained by inadequate weaponry. An emerging category of ‘non-lethal weapons’ carries promise for resolving this dilemma, proffering new capabilities for disabling opponents without inflicting death or permanent injury. This array of much more sophisticated technologies is being developed, and could emerge for use by soldiers and police in the near future. These augmented capabilities carry both immense promise and grave risks: they expand the power of law enforcement and military units, enabling them to accomplish assigned missions with greater finesse and reduced casualties. But they may also be misused - increasing maligned applications and inspiring leaders to over-rely upon a myth of ‘bloodless combat’. This book explores the emerging world of non-lethal weapons by examining a series of case studies - recent real-world scenarios from five confrontations around the world where the availability of a modern arsenal might have made a difference.

5 out of 5 stars A Somewhat Surprising Overvall View.......2006-07-10

Note carefully the sub-title of this book. It is not so much on the details of Non-Lethal Weapons but on various aspects of using them. There is also the possibility of mis-use, as there is with anything else.

Somewhat surprisingly, the book starts with trying to define Non-Lethal Weapons, which is not as easy to define as might be expected. Rubber bullet guns, non-lethal at a distance can kill if fired into a person's head at point blank range. And what is non-lethal to a young strong male may not be to a child or elderly person.

From a legal aspect, there are international treaties regarding chemical weapons, which even includes tear gar, a staple of non-letal weapons of the past. (Which again, to people with breathing difficulties ....)

There is also a detailed look at five situations where non-lethal weapons might have been used, or used differently to resolve a situation. The five situations are:

The FBI and the Davidians at Waco
The UN and the Rwandan Genocide
The Peruvians and Tupac Amaru in Lima
The Russians and the Chechens in Moscow
The British and the Iraquis in Basra.

This text, along with its companion volume, The Science of Crystallization: Macroscopic Phenomena and Defect Generation, make up a complete course that will teach an advanced student how to understand and scientifically analyze any of the phenomena that are observed during natural or technological crystallization from any medium and via any technique of crystallization. It is an advanced text that goes into considerable detail concerning the many elements of knowledge needed to understand a crystallization event quantitatively. The volume deals with the important atomistic-level processes occurring at the interface between a crystal and its nutrient. It also provides the necessary scientific background in both thermodynamics and kinetics needed for the understanding of crystallization for both bulk crystals and thin film crystals.

                      Book Description

The study of patterns and processes of evolution on islands has played an important role in the development of general theories of how and why evolution occurs. Small, discrete pieces of the environment, islands are frequently isolated from the continental processes of gene flow. They are often inhabited by unique species, like the Komodo dragon, dodos, or daisies as tall as trees. They may display remarkable rapidity of diversifying evolution - nearly 1000 species of fruit-fly were formed in the Hawaiian archipelago in only a few million years. Thus, it is easy to see why islands have been referred to as 'natural experiments'. Such studies are continuing to yield exciting new fields for investigation as theoreticians attack questions of genetic change in island models and empirical biologists seek explanations of adaptive radiations in archipelagos. This unique book surveys our current knowledge and understanding of island evolution in eighteen chapters written by experts on various aspects of microevolution, speciation, and adaptive radiation. They cover the major trends and processes displayed by plants and animals, on tropical and temperate zone islands, and in lakes and tropical forest refugia. The book closes with a discussion of several unresolved issues that deserve further study. No other book has been published that focuses solely on the evolutionary processes that occur in islands. This will be of interest to all students and researchers in the fields of ecology and evolutionary biology.

                        Book Description

This book presents the proceedings of the NATO workshop "Knowledge acquisition in the domain of physics and intelligent learning environments" held in Lyon, France, in July 1990. The contributions show clearly the different research approaches used in the area: via artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and physics education (didactics). This is the first book to use these three perspectives to discuss the teaching-learning process in a scientific domain in relation to new information technology. The papers present a variety of possible learning environments, from microworlds corresponding to physics models to environments using computers with captors as data treatments. In all approaches, the question of guidance and student modelling is raised and studied from different perspectives.

This was the current selection in my book club, not my choice, but it was cute. It's a romance novel by one of the more currently popular writers of the genre, Debbie Macomber. One thing with everyone picking a book every month, we get a varied amount of genres in our club. I haven't read a romance novel in a few years. If you are a big romance fan or a big fan of Macomber's, please don't take this to heart. It is my own opinion, right?

well, I found it very very predictable, but I suppose most romance novels are, right? Also, the main character, Hallie, was kind of annoying. Why would Macomber have a woman not more than 10 pounds overweight be so obsessed with her weight and her diet? There are a lot of women who live like this and have the same attitudes but they are usually real overweight women. I couldn't sympathize with her. While she did seem like a realistic enough character, I just didn't find myself really routing for her to have a happy ending. She's turning 30 and is still single. Wanting a man, marriage, and family, she feels like time is running out. She has a lot of bad dates, but we all know her neighbor, Steve, who becomes her friend will eventually become more. He's divorced(relucantly) and very hot, and has two children from his marriage. I liked this character, he seemed very down to earth.

Other characters seemed one dimensional, as they so often do in these books. It's safe to say I will not be reading another light summer romance for another year. I read so many deep, intensely thought provoking works, that I just don't feel very satisfied with books like this.

I just got through reading this book and enjoyed it very much. I have found that there are very few Debbie Macomber books that I don't like. Her writing style is very good and her characters come to life for you.

3 out of 5 stars a predictable yet entertaining quick summer read..........2005-07-20

okay. so i don't give it five stars. that's because i knew what was going to happen from the moment steve moved in next door to hallie, and i was a bit annoyed when the story dragged on. however, some of hallie's dates were absolutely hysterical and i found myself rereading these encounters aloud to my husband so we both had a good laugh. unfortunately, we know that there are men out there similar to those who hallie encounters. the moral is a good one. you'll have to kiss a lot of toads before you find your prince... don't settle... hold out for mr. right.
