Customer Reviews:
a great book.......2001-02-24
Jack Bernstein is just brilliant. His forecast of Y2K market crash and rising energy price were just plain accurate. This is the same man predicted crash of Japanese Nikkie in late 80s. His prediction are largely derived from historical data and facts. Very thorough and methodical analysis. It is a must read for every traders and investors. I wished I have read this book in 1999 and could have saved me tons of money.

For Jake Bernstein, the millennium is bad news. The stock market will crash, panic will ensue, and today's paper millionaires will become tomorrow's paupers. In Beat the Millennium Crash, Bernstein, a noted futures trader whose previous books include The Compleat Day Trader and How the Futures Markets Work, sees a confluence of trends and patterns that will culminate in a dramatic stock market panic that could be triggered by problems associated with the Y2K bug.
At the heart of Bernstein's argument is the idea that interest rates determine the direction of the stock market and overall economic activity. He believes rates are approaching a 54-year bottom, and that "there is no reason to believe that the patterns in interest rates have changed or that the market has ceased to be cyclical." Rising rates will cripple the current bull market, and investments that are out of favor today, such as precious metals, will be one way to profit in this gloomy environment. While Bernstein doesn't think that we'll all turn into pumpkins at midnight on New Year's Eve, he does see the end to the current stock market party happening by 2004. Bernstein particularly likes gold as a hedge to this bearish scenario as well as a healthy amount of cash. No one likes a party pooper or a contrarian, but his advice just might profit those who listen. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
From an international authority on futures trading, a provocative look at the stock market of tomorrow with comprehensive strategies for financial protection and continued prosperity
Is a stock market crash imminent? Jake Bernstein, hailed by Futures Magazine as one of the best at putting together the emotions and mechanics of trading, believes the answer is clear: A dramatic decline in world stock markets is coming soon. With a decisively bearish outlook, he gives investors the crucial insights needed to anticipate the inevitable and act in advance, rather than react in panic when the financial bomb drops.
Will money managers get caught with their cash reserves down? Will the new breed of paper millionaires become extinct? Will The Fed sharply raise interest rates? Will economies around the world collapse? BEAT THE MILLENNIUM CRASH tackles these difficult questions and more. Tracking market behavior over time, Bernstein provides a logical framework for evaluating economic trends. Highlighting the warning signs of a market top, he offers practical advice to help investors prepare--psychologically as well as financially. While exploring the impact of a significant market bust on mutual funds, pensions, and real estate, Bernstein offers lucrative alternatives, including gold. With the author's winning strategies, readers can create a protective investment plan--with the power to keep making money.
Controversial yet vital, BEAT THE MILLENNIUM CRASH urges all investors to face the impending financial disaster now-and take action to protect their future.
Customer Reviews:
In a word... Superb!.......1999-09-10
Extremely thorough on the subject matter. Easy reading but full of a wealth, (no pun intended), of information. A must "read" for everyone, even "non-investors". This cleared up any misconceptions and filled the cracks of all the "rhetoric". Thanks Jake - Todd
Many facets of practical advice.......1999-08-25
Cool Book, buy it. Not just sound financial strategys but advice on Y2K, retaining your money through dodgey periods and investing within your monetary and risk limit.
Ths book will help you in heaps of ways, not just dollars.
An Informative easy to read book!.......1999-08-24
Mr Bernsteins book answered many of my questions. This book was easy to read and hard to put down. I dont think it is a doom and gloom book..It is a well written book and very informative. I feel I will be prepared if there are any problems with the Y2K. I recommend this book to everyone..
More worhtless rhetoric from another doom and gloomer.......1999-07-25
Don't waste your money on this book. This guy has been preaching the proverbial doom and gloom scenario to anyone who will listen for as long as I can remember. His "financial meltdown" hyperbole is a complete scam, and the only thing that will suffer a crisis is this guy's reputation.
Read this and heed:.......1999-07-22
With his usual innate common sense, ( a rare commodity in itself ), Jake Bernstein calmly analyzes the millennium market and offers some surprising predictions, along with quite a few sound assessments, and outlines what actions are needed to be taken by today's astute investor. It's the wise one who will read, absorb and note the reality of these possible trends in this unique market. Some of the news may seem unflinchingly bad, but taken like that *spoonful of medicine*, and acted upon, fortunes instead of losses may be made. Read it and heed ... and thanks, Jake Bernstein, for another classic bit of analysis. Many will be indebted to you for the uncanny foresight in the pages of "Beat The Millennium Crash".

Good guide for training design and delivery.......2003-09-26
The book is unique in it's structure, because it's presented both horizontally and vertically in effect, a training management how to matrix,we can read use in either a sequential and linear fashion or by focusing on only a topic or management tool of particular interest.
The book's format is itself a model for learning, presenting first the big picture, then checklists for idea generation, then forms and tools for direct aid and finally, details of additional information on each chapter topic.

Book Description
We know industrialization affects the physical world, so why must we be faced with catastrophic problems--overpopulation, the loss of biodiversity, oil spills and toxic dump sites, global warming, and the like--before we act to protect the planet's ecosystem--and then most often inadequately? Why are we blind to the daily assaults we make on our environment?
With astute analysis Peter Seidel explores the complex convergence of social, economic, and political factors that keep us from acting in our own self-interest. If we are to take responsible action to save the earth and ourselves, Seidel explains, we must look at how we evolved as a species, our concepts of the world and how we fit into it, the social structures we create, and the ethical views that divide us from each other and the natural world. Seidel explains how to recognize and overcome the obstacles to responsible action we ourselves have created and he provides a strategy for change.

Will the walls come tumbling down? I hope so.......2006-02-05
"Invisible Walls" is a plea for humanity to do a better job at taking care of our world--before it decides to "take care" of us. Seidel is an architect and city planner by training, but clearly a man of wide-ranging interests. This book deserves far more attention than it has received. The points Seidel covers are so important, yet even many environmentalists are unaware of them. I really enjoyed the discussion of the hidden subsidies in gasoline, and the cult of economic growth. I also thought the discussion of the need for broader perspectives and less preaching to the converted was very good. Some great quotes from the book:
". . . if nature is harmed, in time people will suffer."
"An important task for our thinkers, professionals, and other motivated individuals should be to challenge muddled thinking. The proponents of harmful thoughts should be asked difficult questions and be forced to defend their positions."
"The papacy and others who oppose artificial birth control should be asked to explain what should be done when human numbers increase to a point where there is no possible way to prevent mass starvation."
On occasion Seidel seems to get confused between what's necessary to stop the downhill slide of environmental degradation, and the goals of traditional liberalism. He is hardly alone in this. (Take the Sierra Club's recent refusal to take a stand on the question of immigration.) For example, Seidel complains about violence on TV; but there simply isn't any strong evidence that TV violence leads to real violence. Japan watches a lot of violent TV, but has a society with far less real violence than the U.S. does. Seidel also assumes Social Security is a great program. I disagree.
Some of Seidel's suggestions are a bit too vague to be useful, such as suggesting that government must be structured to protect our future. True, but that won't take us very far. In my opinion, what is needed today is more research on how to teach environmentalism to people effectively. It has become abundantly clear in recent years that without solid public support, environmentalism cannot make progress. Religions do scientific research on the best way to convert people to their ideas (I know this as a former missionary). Environmentalists need to do the same, and stop assuming that just being right will win out in the end.
Ecological economics is my own area of research. I think Seidel doesn't say enough on the need to reform the economics profession. Conventional economists have gotten away for far too long with absurd and destructive policy recommendations, together with widespread use of misleading statistics such as the GDP.
This is the most profound book I have read in many years.......2001-11-15
Seidel gives in this book a fantatic account of so many things about which most of us have read, heard or thought ourselves, but said in an incredible lucid style, which is easy and precise at the same time. However, despite the easy syntax and style, this is an extremely profound book. It deals with our intrinsic limitations, that come from evolutionary biology, and from psychology. That alone would make reading it worthwhile. Then it goes on to analyze the limitations we have because we live in organized societies, and how we may indulge in "group thinking". Indeed, it's easier to go along with the crowd; thinking differently requires a lot of intellectual courage. If we choose to do so, we must be prepared many times to withstand criticism, rejection, discrimination and even attacks. However, it is worth it! The book then moves to an analysis of our organizations. It is specially important to note how and to what extent we are being constantly indoctrinated, for commercial and political purposes, and how irrational we may all become as a result. Finally, he offers "solutions". The quote marks are not intended to mean that his proposals are wrong, very much to the contrary. They mean that, at least I myself, am tremendously skeptical that they will ever be implemented. The reason for that lies in ourselves, but to an even larger extent, in the "powers that be", determined to maintain the status quo at all costs. However, I am recommending the book to everybody I care about, and even buying new copies to give to the people I love most. I recommend it without reservations!!!
Thought-provoking unbiased discussion of environ. damage........1999-07-19
This book is a straightforward discussion of why we ignore damage to our environment (and to ourselves). It also offers many worthwhile suggestions as to how we can fix those problems. Frankly, we can no longer afford the luxury of feeling politically sensitive. (I've long ago forgiven Reagan for saying environmentalists would not be happy until they turned the White House into a bird's nest :). Regardless of our political affiliations, we must all look beyond ourselves and pull together to fix our environmental problems before it is too late. There is much to think about in this book, and I highly recommend it.
A good summary of the problem, but too much bias........1999-05-14
This book clearly shows the current state of the relationship between the world and the human race. It does an excellent job of showing how and why we have reached the crisis point that we now find ourselves. It also informs us why physiologically we find it hard to see and fix the ecological problems we have created . These problems show up in ourselves, society and organizations. They are all derived from our own personal evolutionary needs and express themselves in our larger areas of concern. Having shown us how we got to where we are today the author then proceeds to show us possible solutions to our situation. This is where the reality of how he argues his case hits me. He seems to want to fix blame while at the same time say it is natural to want to do nothing if it does not seem broken. If we are going to blame prior presidential administrations we can't just blame Republicans. What about the damage by Clinton, Carter or Johnson? Didn't Clinton promise much and achieve little? Napalm does much damage to the environment and no talk about Johnson? This book is too biased for my taste. It needs a little/lot more balance. At present it is not there. By not building in balanced arguments, the solutions presented become impossible. The lack of fairness leads to lack of credibility.
Thomas Gavin Pepperdine University Student
People all over the world have to think about those problem.......1999-03-14
The book has pointed out some problems which definitely will affect our future on the poor Earth. Chinese people should pay more attention on those problems, because overpopulation and overusing resources would ruin our homeland and slow down economic development. I appreciate the book that can help more people to realize the severity of those difficulties, and encourage people to struggle with those ugly things in the world.

Book Description
The last major report on the state of the British countryside was written 25 years ago. This volume makes a long overdue assessment of what has happened to biodiversity in the intervening period. How has the outlook changed over the last 25 years? Have concerns expressed then been vindicated by events? What has been the impact of legislation enacted since that time? Has increased public awareness of biodiversity and green issues had an impact? In this first critical stock-check of the islands' wildlife since 1974, specialists in over twenty groups of organisms, from viruses to dragonflies and mosses to mammals, review the factors affecting losses, gains and change. Issues of agriculture, climate, pollution, habitat management, effectiveness of the statutory conservation agencies, legislative measures for species protection and species recovery programs are considered and analyzed. Data capture for the future is highlighted, and the issue of who will do the work is raised. The prognosis is one of ongoing concern.

Book Description
The author of the bestselling NUMA and Dirk Pitt series returns with an all-new novel of adventure and intrigue featuring his unbeatable hero of the high seas-Juan Cabrillo.
Cabrillo and his motley crew aboard the clandestine spy ship Oregon have made a very comfortable and very dangerous living working for high-powered Western interests. But their newest clients have come from the Far East to ask for Cabrillo's special brand of assistance: a consortium of Japanese shipping magnates whose fortunes are being threatened by brutal pirates trolling the waters of Southeast Asia.
Normally, such attacks on the high seas are limited to smaller ships and foreign-owned yachts-easy targets on the open ocean. Now, however, giant commercial freighters are disappearing. But when Cabrillo confronts the enemy, he learns that the pirates' predations hide a deadly international conspiracy-a scheme of death and slavery that Juan Cabrillo is going to blow out of the water.
Customer Reviews:
Fast favorite.......2007-06-02
I have always been a Clive Cussler fan, I have been enjoying the "Oregon
Files" since the begining. But lately they have become a fast fovorite.
I am also a Jack Du Burl fan. Teaming him with Clive Cussler is one of
the best ideas that have ever come along. Action adventure fans will find
thees books a wonderfull read. I highly recomend them. I have started my
frends and family reading all the series, Dirk Pit, Kurt Auston, Juan Cabrillo, and Phillup Mercer, wouldent it be fun if Dirk Pit and Maercer
had an adventue togather.
Solid adventure.......2007-02-11
This was my first encounter with Cussler's Oregon franchise - one that resembles yet is also distinct from his older and well known NUMA franchises.
"Oregon Files"? That's right. "Oregon" is the name of a tramp freighter, a sea-going wreck that is alo loaded with tons of high-tech and hard-hitting weaponry, capable of zipping over rough seas with next-generation engines using electromagnetism and carries its own contingent of SEALs. Owned by the shadowy "Corporation", the Oregon stands ready to handle various clandestine operations that freedom-loving governments themselves are unable to handle. (If you've seen the orginal James Bond movie "Thunderball", imagine the "Disco Valente" and you'll get the idea.) "Oregon" is very much a profit-making enterprise, but one that chooses only assignments that its "Chairman" can live with. In short, Oregon is the epitome of the term "Freedom isn't Free".
In "Dark Watch", the crew is asked to look into reports of piracy in the Sea of Japan. What they find is only the tip of the iceberg. Cussler and Du Brul link the piracy to a huge operation involving crooked bankers, human smuggling on a vast scale, an industrial-sized ship-breaking operation, and your typical character who embodies evil.
If "Dark Watch" is any indication, then "Oregon Files" can best be considered a more determined and gritty version of Cussler's "Dirk Pitt" books. Not even the "Chairman" himself (the nominal hero of the story) quite captures the story the way that Dirk Pitt does. Cussler ditches the "Camp of Pitt" (in "Valhalla Rising", Pitt manages to locate and rescue a beautiful woman from the heart of a burning cruise liner; the next morning, he introduces himself by apologizing for his "tardiness) but doesn't really replace it with something new. It's like "Diet Dirk Pitt" - fewer calories or taste.
As for the story itself, "Dark Watch" has a bunch of interesting threads that just come together without ever becoming a truly epic story - instead, one story leads into another once it's had its compulsory adventure scene.
That said, this was still a great read (great beach reading in the finest Cussler tradition), with riveting action sequences and fun/disposable bad-guys. In know I'll be packing some more of "Oregon" the next time I head for the beach.
Don't Bother!.......2006-10-14
It's too bad that Clive Cussler changed collaborators on his "Oregon Files" series. This was terrible! I couldn't even finish it. I read a lot in all different genres so I feel that I'm a little qualified to comment on a book I have read. It dragged, some of the characters were changed and even though I know you have suspend disbelief, I couldn't keep my eyes open. Golden Buddha and Sacred Stone were much better.
Finally - some depth to the characters.......2006-06-23
I was very disappointed in the last Oregon book. This was a fun read and the character development that makes a Cussler book worth reading.
AAA+++.......2006-05-19
This was my first Cussler novel and I'm hooked. Fast paced adventure and a great way to learn about many facets of the maritime.

Wild, wild, sexy Wes...........2006-10-20
Carrying an unrequited torch for the wife of one of his teammates, short and stoic Navy SEAL Wes Skelly is on leave in LA and reluctantly agrees to a blind date with the sister in law a friend. He doesn't count on anything coming of it; after all he's in love with Lana. Single mom Brittany takes his breath away. They immediately have a rapport and he soon finds himself sharing far more with her than any other woman, including details about his love for Lana. Brittany is so different from any woman he has ever met - a total Earth mother, she adopted a troubled boy who was in and out of foster care. When his credit card is declined for their supper, she offers to let him stay on her couch while he is in LA.
Lana's sister, Hollywood "It girl" Amber Tierney has an amorous fan on the brink of stalking; at Lana's request, Wes agrees to look into her security. Of course, Amber has eyes for Wes; Wes suddenly has eyes for Brittany; Brittany has eyes for Wes but thinks he is hopelessly devoted to Lana...
When her son Andy goes to an out of town game, Brittany and Wes suddenly find themselves in close quarters and fighting their growing attraction to each other. When their relationship takes a physical turn, Brittany is just waiting for the floor to drop, and for him to leave her for Lana since the casual agreement they have is suddenly turning more permanent for her. Would he suddenly dump her if Lana were free? We is not sure of his feelings for Brit, but when her safety is in question, all his years of building walls come tumbling down.
Brockmann's 11th in the TDD series has a great tortured duo with so much chemistry dripping off the page you cannot help but hope for a happily ever after. Her heroine is not a wallflower that waits on the sidelines. The only complaint I had was the dialogue was a bit juvenile for two 30-something adults. Like I'm not like sure they'd like talk like that. Despite the dialogue and the constant mentions of Wes's stature, I really liked the story and found myself engaged to the very end.
Truly enjoyed this book!.......2004-04-18
Night Watch by Suzanne Brockmann, is a book you don't want to overlook. The story will have you eagerly turning the pages!

Night Watch is this writers best book so far. Exciting, hot, and yes...it rocks!
Fun Plot!.......2004-03-14
Night Watch was such a fun story. I loved the steamy characters!
Brockmann's best.......2004-02-18
I've been reading Suzanne Brockmann for a while now, and I think she does the humor thing well (but not as well as Jennifer Crusie), the sex thing in a way that's really quite extremely very (I can't think of another intensifier, but you get the idea) hot, and that usually doesn't make me cringe (sorry, I start laughing when sensitive things get laved and suckled), and the testosterone-blessed alpha-male thing like nobody else, but this is her first book that I don't have ANY quibbles with. And I really fell for Wes--maybe because he WASN'T tall, dark and handsome, he was short, fair, and his face was "...a face. Not stunningly handsome...but not Frankenstein's monster, either." When the two of them begin feeling the attraction, they start describing each other as beautiful/handsome, but this feels quite appropriate. The inner dialogue of both characters seems very authentic, and the conversations always read very smoothly--none of the jarring turns of phrase that can take you right out of a storyline. And it was a compelling story, because they were easy characters to care about. Only after reading it again did I start having any 'wait a minute' moments--like, why did Wes bring along a dress uniform to LA in the first place? How can he reach into his pocket for his wallet and the condom in it when...maybe this one should be left to the imagination. But I couldn't really even call those quibbles, I just had to admire how smoothly such details were slipped by me the first time. In fact, I just had to admire it by rereading it over and over again.

A split second in time.........2002-03-15
For one split second, Valentina O'Hara hesistated. In that second, her lover and swat partner lost his life. Ever since Valentina has felt the need to atone. Through the Black Watch regiment, she uses her sniper abilities to take down deadly enemies. Now, the life of a kidnapped child will rely on her skill, courage, and compassion.
Rafe Courtenay, Godfather of the kidnapped child, follows after Valentina. At first he judges her cold and without compassion. But in the two nights traveling, Valentina's dreams reveals to him a heart torn and troubled by an unknown past. He finds he needs Valentina and goes after her to win her love and trust, and in the process, to give her healing.
BJ James books are short, tight, and always pack a punch. Her words are not "purple" but very poetic, emotional, and gets her characters emotions across without alot of sidetracking. For those of you who have read Nora Robert short books, I would recommend the BJ James books. This book is OOP but worth finding. Hunt and Enjoy!
