Boards That Deliver: Advancing Corporate Governance From Compliance to Competitive Advantage
-
The Recurrent Crisis in Corporate Governance
ASIN: 1587623323 |
Book Description
A pair of insiders and a host of corporate directors reveal the all-too-human failings that lead to corporate mismanagement and malfeasance. Seymann and Rosenbaum argue that the corporate meltdowns of 2002 resulted more from a lack of director focus than a lack of rules, and they come up with commonsense solutions that can be implemented immediately. In Plain English, they dissect the corporate practices that defy logic, the questions that are never asked or answered, and the hidden traps that snare so many corporate boards. The Governance Game is required reading for CEOs and directors, for investors and consumers, and for anyone who wants to understand what went wrong with corporate America - and how to fix it.

As the environment for corproate governance continues to evolve, this book offers a quick, insightful read for what is expected in today's climate.
governance.......2003-08-04
The author makes bold, logical and necessary recommendations for the enhancement of corporate governance in a reader friendly format. This is a valuable contribution to the subject and should be carefully considered by all boardroom constituencies - directors, emloyees, investors and other key stakeholders.

Book Description

The first edition of Hubble Vision was published in 1995, when the Hubble Space Telescope was already "the foremost observatory of our age." This second edition has been almost completely rewritten to emphasize the telescope's impressive list of new discoveries.
The 100 new illustrations include many glorious images: exploding stars and colliding galaxies, the profound vision of the Hubble Deep Field, gravitational lenses, the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy on Jupiter, and pictures of other solar systems. But the book is not just a collection of pretty pictures; it's also an excellent introduction to astronomy. Since it describes both objects (from the level of the nearby planets to the level of the big bang) and instruments, it gives laypeople a particularly accurate idea of what astronomers actually do--and of how much fun they have doing it.
Brandt is an astronomer at the University of Colorado and a principal investigator for the space telescope, while his collaborator Collins Petersen is a science writer with practical experience in astronomy. Their combined expertise results in a book that is authoritative but not daunting, gorgeous but not superficial. You may want to keep it on your coffee table, but you should also actually read it. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
The first edition of Hubble Vision became an international bestseller and won world-wide, critical acclaim. This eagerly awaited second edition is the most comprehensive, most authoritative and best illustrated popular book available on the Hubble Space Telescope. It provides a magnificent portfolio of the latest and greatest images from the HST, woven together with a lucid text explaining the most exciting discoveries and setting them in the context of our current understanding in astronomy. This second edition has been completely revised, updated and expanded to include all the latest astronomical discoveries - from supernovae and protostars to gravitational lensing, black holes and the early Universe. It is now even better illustrated, with nearly 25% more figures, and more than 100 entirely new. The unique combination of authors - an award-winning science writer and a key scientist involved in the development of the mission - ensure that the text is both engaging and authoritative. Hubble Vision offers a view of the Universe as never seen before. It will capture the imagination of all those interested in the astronomical quest of understanding our Universe - from high-school students to general readers and amateur astronomers.
Customer Reviews:
the glory that was hubble.......2004-09-07
This is a book about big science in space. The hubble telescope was the most complex piece of scientific equipment that was ever built to operate off of Earth. From its initial "mistake" in a poorly honed hyperbolic mirror - its "correction" became a major media event that nearly busted Nasa's budget - to the innumerable failing subsystems in constant need of adjustment, its success is something of a phenomenon.
But a success it indisputably was, one of the greatest in the history of human endeavor and easily the equal to, say, the creation of the Gothic cathedral. Images from the telescope have become so uniquitous, such as its use as background in Star Trek, that we would be shocked if they disappeared. Of course, the advancement of virtually all fields of astronomy that it spawned will enrich us forever. Not only can we plumb the composition of stars and search for planets more accurately, but such scientific givens as the Hubble constant are coming into question with the precision measurements not coming available. Even amateurs, if they come up with an interesting proposal, can get a crack at making scientific history.
Peterson and Brandt cover these developments competently and clearly, with gorgeous photos throughout the book to add to its wonder. While they do not cover they public policy angle alll too well, the science is enough (even if it gets a bit too gee-whiz for my taste at times).
Warmly recommended.
Hubble Heaven.......2000-05-14
To the average person like myself it is simple uncomprehensable that way out here is all of this energy, peacefully and sometimes horrifically looming around us. Reading this book, and particularly looking intensely at the wonderful colour photographs, I cannot feel anything else but awe for the sheer original beauty of our universe, and the great bridges that we need to cross scientifically to even make an inch of sense of it. The text is easy enough for the pure enthusiast to understand the concepts, but for those with a thirst for knowledge, these pages reveal centuries of human time devoted to exploring milleniums and milleniums of universal time. It really does make you feel as though the only thing between us and the secret of everything is our humble mortality, not our need to know. Hubble Vision gives you a snapshot of the heavens, and beyond, something we'll never experince first hand in our life-time at least!

ASIN: 3540294074 |
Book Description
In November 2004, M. Yor and R. Mansuy jointly gave six lectures at Columbia University, New York. These notes follow the contents of that course, covering expansion of filtration formulae; BDG inequalities up to any random time; martingales that vanish on the zero set of Brownian motion; the Azéma-Emery martingales and chaos representation; the filtration of truncated Brownian motion; attempts to characterize the Brownian filtration.
The book accordingly sets out to acquaint its readers with the theory and main examples of enlargements of filtrations, of either the initial or the progressive kind. It is accessible to researchers and graduate students working in stochastic calculus and excursion theory, and more broadly to mathematicians acquainted with the basics of Brownian motion.

Growing Carnivorous Plants

Book Description
It follows from these few facts that different kinds of seeds excite the leaves in very different degrees; whether this is solely due to the nature of their coats is not clear. In the case of the cress seeds, the partial removal of the layer of mucus hastened the inflection of the tentacles. Whenever the leaves remain inflected during several days over seeds, it is clear that they absorb some matter from them.

Some things you've gotta know... .......2006-09-20
1. As I write, the complete works of Charles Darwin are available online for free. For instance, you can view this book's content, including all of its images, and the original page numbers, at John van Wyhe's britishlibrary website. This online version includes an excellent indexing and search facility that contains more information than the book's actual index.
2. This book describes Darwin's studies of how carnivorous plants catch, ingest and digest flies. The experiments are historically significant... and amusing, if only for the interesting forms of gunk used by Darwin to study the plants. Of the 18 chapters, the first 11 deal with one specific variety of sundew, Drosera rotundifolia. The twelfth chapter covers other varieties of sundew. The thirteenth and fourteenth chapters are on the Dionaea Muscipula (Venus fly-trap) and Aldrovanda vesiculosa (an aquatic trap). The fifteenth describes the Drosophyllum lusitanicum (Portuguese sundew), the Roridula dentata, and the Byblis. Chapter 16 covers Butterworts (Pinguicula), while the final two chapters examine Bladderworts (Utricularia).
3. If you are interested in Darwin history: In "Insectivorous Plants," we see Darwin the experimentalist, with his old friends, colleagues and family, uniting in 1874 to catalogue and understand insectivorous plants. Included in the studies are long-time Darwin associates Hooker and Thistelton-Dyer from Kew, Sanderson (experimenting with plant digestion) at University College London, Asa Gray at Harvard, and Darwin's sons. There was some correspondence with Lyell, on this topic, but Lyell's friendship with Darwin had soured, and Lyell died while Darwin worked on this book. This book initially sold more rapidly than The Origin of the Species. Francis "Frank" Darwin met and married Amy Ruck, his first wife during this time. George Romanes, who had studied with Frank at Cambridge, joined the family at this time, and may have had an influence on the book. Darwin also corresponded about such scientific greats as FC Donders. And so Insectivorous Plants will be interesting to those who are familiar with Darwin's life and times. If you want to read Darwin's correspondence during this time, see "The Life and Letters of Charles Darwin" (F. Darwin, 1905, also available online). Chapter 13 covers insectivorous plants. As the book went to press, Darwin wrote Hooker: "You ask about my book, and all that I can say is that I am ready to commit suicide; I thought it was decently written, but find so much wants rewriting, that it will not be ready to go to printers for two months, and will then make a confoundedly big book. Murray will say that it is no use publishing in the middle of summer, so I do not know what will be the upshot; but I begin to think that every one who publishes a book is a fool."
4. If you are interested in evolution, and the the evolution of insectivorous plants: There isn't much if any discussion of evolution in this book. If I'm not mistaken, Darwin took something of a break from evolutionary theory and natural selection when he wrote this book. As far as I know, Darwin didn't spend much time speculating about the evolution of these plants. Apparently, there isn't much of a fossil record of carnivorous plants. As tests of genetic similarity have improved, there has been new speculation about the evolution of carnivores. Some sources: A) Juniper, B. E., Robins, Richard J. and Joel, D. M. (1989). The Carnivorous Plants. London; San Diego, Academic Press. B) Cook, Steve R. (2001). ?When plants kill.? Accessed online: October 10, 2001. (find online) C) Cameron, Kenneth M., Wurdack, Kenneth J. and Jobson, Richard W. (2002). Molecular evidence for the common origin of snap-traps among carnivorous plants. American Journal of Botany. 89(9): 1503-1509. (find online). Barry Rice's new book is due out any day, and I feel confident that it will examine this issue clearly.
5. If you are interested in learning more about carnivorous plants, take a look at the list of sources I'll post under Listmania. I feel confident that the new book by Barry Rice will be an excellent source. There are excellent books to consider that have been authored by Gordon Cheers, Peter D'Amato, Rica Erickson, Barry Juniper et al., Patricia Kite, Francis Lloyd (1940's), Allen Lowrie, Charles Nelson, James & Patricia Pietropaulo, Nick Romanowski, Donald Schnell, Adrian Slack, Dorothy Souza, and others. The new book by Rice is probably the most important new book since Schnell (2002) and D'Amato (1998), both highly recommended. Much depends on your interests and level of knowledge. So stay tuned for my list!

Jane Goodall: The Woman Who Redefined Man
ASIN: 0446698210 |
Amazon.com
World-renowned scientist and conservationist Jane Goodall earned her fame by studying chimpanzee feeding habits. But in Harvest for Hope, she scrutinizes human eating behaviors, and the colossal food industries that force-feed some cultures' self-destructive habits for mass consumption. It's an unsustainable lifestyle that Goodall argues must change immediately, beginning--not ironically--at a grassroots level.
Looping personal anecdotes from 40 years of global travels with stories from noble farmer Davids and corporate Goliaths, Goodall methodically builds her case for shopping organic and living modestly. Mustering a tender gumption, she details the vicious cycle of pesticide-ridden and genetically engineered crops which feed the unknowing majority of consumers; and also feed the antibiotic-treated animals that provide these folks with inexpensive entrees. Leaving nasty slaughterhouse scenes to less tactful pens, Goodall focuses more on the product of "factory farming" techniques: mountains of waste, nutritionally depleted soil, polluted water, displaced organic farmers, and severely compromised food.
Hope springs from positive sources: Edible Schoolyard programs in the U.K. and U.S., parents breaking their schools' "unholy alliance" with fast food chains and soft drink companies, a steady rise in organic purchases. Goodall offers many suggestions for rallying others, exercising one's own consumer powers, and just plain eating less meat. Conservationists might say this information is nothing new, which might explain why Goodall provides only tertiary references to her many statistics and facts. But for those who prefer that their own eating habits be stirred--not shaken--into question, the kindly Chimpanzee Lady provides the gentle touch required. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
World-renowned scientist and conservationist Jane Goodall earned her fame by studying chimpanzee feeding habits. But in Harvest for Hope, she scrutinizes human eating behaviors, and the colossal food industries that force-feed some cultures' self-destructive habits for mass consumption. It's an unsustainable lifestyle that Goodall argues must change immediately, beginning--not ironically--at a grassroots level.Looping personal anecdotes from 40 years of global travels with stories from noble farmer Davids and corporate Goliaths, Goodall methodically builds her case for shopping organic and living modestly. Customer Reviews:
Everyone should read this..........2007-04-17
It's time that everyone starts making changes, however small they may be. This book is perfect for just that! Jane Goodall has a warm way of conveying such critical information. An easy read, can't put it down!
Great information!.......2007-03-22
I read this book a long time ago (its been about two years) but Im still reminded of the big points that Jane Goodall brought up in her book.
Random stuff I remember.
- slightly boring in some parts (why there's 4 stars). I found myself picking up the book merely to gain more insight about food - not really extremely excited about reading it.
- however, some parts were just REALLY interesting.
Because you never have heard of companies like Monsanto (about them selling "killer seeds" to unwitting Africans, a David versus Goliath court case, the dangers of one company owning the world's food supply).
You dont REALLY know which companies that you previously thought were "small organic farms" were actually owned by Coke, General Mills, etc.
You never have really thought of benefits from buying local produce (much less that commonshare? timeshare? I dont know, its a thing where you get in season fruits and veggies from local farmers for about $300 a month).
- Jane Goodall is very pro vegetarian. but, to the meat eaters, she does offer information that behooves you as well. Like ... which type of fish will probably have the least amount of chemicals in them. But you will have to hear about factory farming, etc (but its not a huge part of the book).
- surprisingly, she offers good advice about things that you can stray from buying organic as well as the things that you should buy organic.
- you learn about the dangers of improper farming. The lack of proper irrigation, pesticide use (which makes the pests more resilient leading to stronger pesticides needed), and the lack of correct crop rotation to reuse the soil.
And I havent read this book since over two years ago. It wasnt mind blowingly exciting to read, but somehow at the end, I learned some really interesting things.
And she DOES offer a message of hope. I dont want to feel like the world is going to die and we are all doomed after finishing a book. So I was glad that Jane Goodall (or her cowriters, whoever) presented this information in a hopeful manner.
PS. Im assuming there was slight bias. But I got the impression that this book was about as fact based as a biased book could get. If that makes sense.
PPS. I am really intrigued by the program she has set up for schools to teach kids how to eat properly. One of the shocking things she mentioned was showing kids various fruits and vegetables and they had no clue what they were, much less where the grew from (ie, out of the ground on a vine etc)
A Knowledge Guide for Healthy Eating and Drinking .......2007-03-16
This book was wonderful guide regarding the production of our food not only in the US but throughtout the world. As, consumers we need to realize how are food is produced, where it comes from, whats on it, does it have hormones, what are healthy nutrient ingredients, and is our water pure and clean to drink? What may seem healthy may not always be? Jane Goodall, gives excellent illustrations and examples in each chapter regarding what we can do as consumers demanding healthy good healthy food and water in ourlives. I bought several copies of this excellent book to give to family and friends. I would love to hear her oneday give a lecture and presentation on this subject.
NOURISHING IF NOT QUITE SATIATING.......2007-02-21
Written with Goodall's characteristically lucid, unpretentious prose, this book takes on one of the world's most urgent problems. Goodall, famous for her studies of wild chimpanzees, has become a global force for change, and this book is just the latest installment in her tireless efforts.
The most telling message of this book is, for me, that the chemical-dependent, monoculture-oriented, profit-margin-driven paradigm that predominates modern food production simply doesn't work. I challenge any reader not to come away without feeling at least some disdain towards the breathtaking greed and self-serving arrogance of Monsanto and other agribusiness giants. Goodall asks poignantly: "How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons?"
I was disappointed by several omissions, for instance that there is no mention of the non-dairy milks (soy, rice, almond, etc.) and ice creams and faux meats now available. I also can't share Goodall's enthusiasm for buffalo meat (p. 105), or the implication that dairy products are healthful [...]. Readers can't verify many of the facts and statistics offered here because there are no cited sources to consult. Finally, this book needs an index!
In fairness, though, this book is a positive force because it is digestible for masses. Goodall is a master at tackling difficult subjects without sounding preachy or dogmatic. True to its title, this is an optimistic book. And it's empowering. Goodall offers many tidbits of advice on what consumers can do to help drive change away from industrialized, chemical-dependent agriculture and towards local, sustainable and tastier food. I applaud her for broaching what is ultimately the world's most over-arching problem: human overpopulation!

Product Description
Today there are more than six billion human beings on this planet, all needing to eat, and we have seen the rise to power of giant multinational corporations, eager to exploit the opportunity of such a vast global market. In order to produce more and more food, either to feed hungry people or to satisfy the wants - as distinct from needs - of today's materialistic urban elite, agricultural methods have changed. The aim of the ever more powerful corporations, with the support of governments they help to bring to power, is to produce as much food as possible, as cheaply as possible, with maximum profits for the shareholders.... What can be done to stop the monstrous corporate takeover that is motivated by the desire for more, and ever more, financial profit? How can we change a world in which decisions that affect our health and the health of the planet for generations to come are taken in order to present economic growth at the next shareholders meeting? What can we do as individuals in this world of giant corporate greed, human and animal suffering, and enviromental destruction? Is it absolutely beyond our control? There are millions of people who think this way, who feel helpless in the face of the magnitude of the problems. So even if they care they fall into apathy. This book is a clarion call to rouse such people from spineless acceptance of the status quo. I cannot stress strongly enough that every individual makes a difference. And I hope that you will understand just what it is that you can do - and that you choose to do it! --- excerpts from book's Introduction.
