Budgeting for Managers
ASIN: 0471109282 |
Book Description
As a busy business manager, would you like to spend less time budgeting, and learn more from the budgeting you do? If you answer yes, then Budgeting à la Carte is the book for you.
Most books on budgeting advocate a comprehensive, "seven course dinner" budgeting system. But unless you're the CEO of a major corporation, this is too much informationâmaybe way too much. What you need instead is Budgeting à la Carte: a menu of budgeting options that allows you to pick and choose only those items that suit your taste, appetite, and business situation.
Explained in detail by bestselling financial author John A. Tracy, this comprehensive resource covers the full range of budgeting procedures, including:
- Income Statements
- Balance Sheets
- Operating Ratios
- Profitability
- Cash Flow
- Price and Volume Tradeoffs
- Cost Allocations
- Capital Investments
- And more . . .
Budgeting, Tracy shows, is not an end in itself. It's a set of tools you can use to maximize financial performance and position. With Budgeting à la Carte, you'll control the tools, and you can decide just how much and what kind of budgeting is right for your business.

"[If] you would like to have a minimal understanding of the numbers that make up a balance sheet, income, and cash flow statement . . . then How to Read a Financial Report might be just what you are looking for. Mr. Tracy's book explains in plain English the meaning of the major terms used in financial statements . . ."âThe Wall Street Journal
Customer Reviews:
A useful book on management accounting.......2002-05-09
A concise yet very informative book for managers interested in running a business 'by the numbers'. It is written in a very practical and easy-to-understand manner. I utilize many of Tracy's ideas in my own job. The book deals not only with budgeting but with management reporting, break-even analysis, project anlysis, and accounting issues in both service and manufacturing enviroments.

Book Description
Outside of the accounting and finance departments, not many business people are interested in the finer points of financial reports. But every manager must have a thorough understanding of what their finance and accounting staffs do, why they do it, and what these reports really mean.
This indispensable book demystifies the role that accounting and finance play in a corporation and demonstrates how financial decisions are manifestations of company goals. The author's crystal-clear examples show how managers can connect corporate financial information directly to their own strategies and actions. To demonstrate these connections, the author covers such essential topics as:
* Balance sheets and income/cash flow statements * Reading and understanding annual reports * Fixed-cost and variable-cost issues * Financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting.

If you want a basic intro ..........2007-05-02
If you are looking for a book to introduce you to the basics of business including the jargon behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a true "finance and accounting text," search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. If you have never had this stuff 'splained' to you before, you will like it. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this text, just that you check it out as well.
The Essentials of Finance and Accounting for Nonfinancial Managers.......2005-09-15
Book was well written and speaks directly to someone who has never worked with the finances of a corporation.
How to understand the basics of a balance sheet.......2002-08-08
Edward Fields' Essentials Of Finance And Accounting For Nonfinancial Managers tells how to understand the basics of a balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement and annual reports. Newcomers to reading company financials will appreciate the clear explanations on investment returns, analysis ratios, and other methods of understanding business reports.

If you find most accounting guides as complex as accounting itself, you'll love this itty-bitty guide, full of practical techniques that show you how to analyze financial statements, interpret financial data, and measure business performance. On every page, clear text and illustrations cover each aspect of accounting principles and practices, while simple checklists enable you to calculate ratios, identify creative accounting, and make sound financial decisions. And throughout, accessible charts and diagrams explore different options for financial planning and forecasting. Granted, if you're looking for specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.
It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies series' talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars with Dorling-Kindersley's signature, crisp graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective.
Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire department or staff. --Timothy Murphy

Customer Reviews:
It's really not that good, but it was worth my time reading it.......2007-08-06
This is one of those books I bought in the airport. I'd probably buy it again at an airport, but I wouldn't buy it on a place like amazon, where there's a better selection of basic accounting books.
All I wanted was a quick overview of different accounting concepts, and it did give me that.
But, it's really not a very good book. It's very choppy, and I asked a real accountant about a few terms they used in the book, and he said, "I've never heard that term before."
The pictures and illustrations are sometimes unintentionally funny.
If you read only one book on accounting....make it another one.......2006-12-19
I write as the manager of a small business who hoped to learn something useful about the money side. Yes, the book is encouragingly small, brightly colored, and beautifully laid out in the usual user-friendly Dorling Kindersley way. Unfortunately, for me, this is where the positive aspect ends. The basics at the beginning of the book were fine - Who Uses Accounts, Defining Key Concepts, and Understanding a Profit and Loss Account. This took me to page 21 (of 69). When I got to balance sheets and cash flow, the information was tightly packed, but I think I just about understood current and fixed assets, and most of what was written about liabilities. As soon as I got to cash flow, the information overload was becoming too much. I was understanding the overall concepts, but there was too much information for the number of words on the page. The detail became too much to absorb. The following sections cover numerous topics in overview - concepts are introduced but there is nothing here to make the information stick.
After reading this, I've come to think that an introduction to accounts needs to present the information much less densely and have plenty of examples and exercises, as well as review. After all, the reason to read a book like this is not because one loves the idea of accounting per se. It is to get something useful or applicable out of it. The back cover blurb says the book will "show you how to", "enable you to", and so on. I don't think the book fulfills this promise. I began this book with a hazy knowledge of accounts. I leave it with hazy knowledge of accounts. DK, I love the design of your books, but more thought needs to be put into the content of this one.
easy to understand quickly.......2001-03-13

A handy guidebook for both researchers and practitioners.......2000-07-23
We all once was, now are, or in the future will be, a newcomer of organizations. It has been less speculated, however, the meaning of entry into organization, socialization to it, and HRM policies to lessen voluntary turnover after newcomers' entry both in academia and management practices. In 1992, I had so much difficulty in writing up my dissertation on organizational socialization in terms of effective strategies to make newcomers socialized to company's culture. This book was a breakthrough; the sections of past process models of socialization and the review of Realistic Job Preview study were really helpful. After vigorous library-work afterward, I came to believe this book was perhaps the best summary on organizational entry (anticipatory socialization) and socialization. Only one that lacks may be the explanation about variety of socialization tasks (thus I rate 4-star). A handy but helpful guidebook both for academics and practitioners. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Completely revised and updated, Elements of Environmental Engineering: Thermodynamics and Kinetics, Second Edition covers the applications of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics in environmental processes. Each chapter has been rewritten and includes new examples that better illuminate the theories discussed. An excellent introduction to environmental engineering, this reference stands alone in its multimedia approach to fate and transport modeling and in pollution control design options. Clearly and lucidly written, it provides extensive tables, figures, and data that make it the reference to have on this subject.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful introductory textbook.......1999-12-28
A good resource for environmentasl engineers especially those with little or no background in physical chemistry. However, there could be more examples that would have helped. I found this quiter sutiable for an upper level class in environmental engineering or chemical engineering.
a good text.......1997-12-14
this is an excellent resource for environmental engineers who are not proficient with the basics of physical chemistry as applied to the environment. It gives a good background in chemical thermodynamics and kinetics applied to various environmental problems.

Book Description
In this book the authors develop and work out applications to gravity and gauge theories and their interactions with generic matter fields, including spinors in full detail. Spinor fields in particular appear to be the prototypes of truly gauge-natural objects, which are not purely gauge nor purely natural, so that they are a paradigmatic example of the intriguing relations between gauge natural geometry and physical phenomenology. In particular, the gauge natural framework for spinors is developed in this book in full detail, and it is shown to be fundamentally related to the interaction between fermions and dynamical tetrad gravity.

Book Description
Clear-eyed and spirited, Taylor Greer grew up poor in rural Kentucky with the goals of avoiding pregnancy and getting away. But when she heads west with high hopes and a barely functional car, she meets the human condition head-on. By the time Taylor arrives in Tucson, Arizona, she has acquired a completely unexpected child, a three-year-old American Indian girl named Turtle, and must somehow come to terms with both motherhood and the necessity for putting down roots. Hers is a story about love and friendship, abandonment and belonging, and the discovery of surprising resources in apparently empty places.
Available for the first time in mass-market, this edition of Barbara Kingsolver's bestselling novel, The Bean Trees, will be in stores everywhere in September. With two different but equally handsome covers, this book is a fine addition to your Kingsolver library.

Cute, but didn't impress me.......2007-09-25
This is a story of Taylor Greer. Taylor is from a small Kentucky town and is lucky enough to stay in school, get an education, get a job, save some money, leave town and head west. After inheriting a little girl named "Turtle" she settles down in Tuscon, Arizona where she gets a job and makes some interesting friends. There was something missing from this book. I am struggling with exactly what. I thought some of the characters, like Lou Ann and Taylor, were developed well enough. Some characters could have been developed more. I thought the story dragged in some parts. I felt like I was missing some key points that should have been mentioned in the book but weren't. Although there was some good humor and some interesting parts that kept my attention, I can't say this book left an impression.
Original story.......2007-09-15
I loved this book. I think it is a very original idea- I have never read a book quite like this one. Kingsolver always does such an amazing job of painting characters that seem so real. The story is just strange enough to be true!
Great Read!.......2007-08-05
Barbara Kingsolver has a way of making her characters come to life. In this novel, she uses her colorful (mostly female) characters to get us thinking about racism, being a parent, life paths, and family. I've also read the sequel "Pigs in Heaven" and enjoyed it, but I think this one is a bit better.
This book was excellent!.......2007-07-23
A friend gave me this book to read and she insisted that I read it right away. I was a little reluctant but I was glad I decided to give it a chance. It is a captivating story of a young outspoken girl and her life-changing road trip. It is written in a real-life way and keeps the reader interested with a colorful dialogue. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good storyline and interesting word structure.
AN ENJOYABLE READ.......2007-05-23
This is a story about a Taylor - a young woman who leaves her small Kentucky town and heads west - hoping to make something of her life. In her travels, Taylor's handed a 3 year old American Indian girl who, it's clear, has been heiniously abused. When there's no trace of this child's parents, Taylor takes on the role, and by the time the two land in a small town outside Tuscon, Arizona, for all intents and purposes, Taylor is the child's mother.
Written in wise and lyrical prose, this story is about loyalty in love and friendship, and about discovering how far in life these treasures can take you.

The Bean Trees Review.......2004-03-12
The Bean Trees is a very enjoyable book. It all starts when a woman wants to move someplace else other than where she grew up in Kentucky. This book has a few reasons why I enjoyed it. I also would not recommend this book to some people.
This was a very good book. It was about a women who moved from Kentucky. She really didnýt care where she ended up. She was willing to live anywhere. She changed her name from Marietta to Taylor. She was moving, but she had no idea where she would end up. On her journey an Indian women handed her a small child and told her to take it. She didn't know what to do and she took it. She didn't know anything about this child though. She decided to name her Turtle because of the ways she gripped onto everything. Taylor ended up living in Tucson, Arizona. She barely had any money with her. She didn't know where she was going to live. In the newspaper she found an add with someone looking for a roommate. She ended up living with a girl named Lou Ann. She had a small child that was just born. Her husband left her though. Taylor ended up working at a tire shop with a woman named Mattie, who helped her out when she first came to Tucson. Throughout the book Taylor meets new people and finds out more exciting things.
At first this book seemed very dull to me and I didn't think that this book was going anywhere. Then as I kept reading, this book became more enjoyable. It came to be that I enjoyed this book a lot. I did because it had a lot of exciting and good moments in this book. Such as, when Taylor finally found a place to stay, when she got a job with Mattie, and when she thinks she has figured out "Turtle's" real name. I also liked it because of the character Taylor. She never gave up to go back to her home town in Kentucky. She kept going even though she didn't have a job at first, a place to live in, or even a car that had windows. She also had a child with her. She took care of herself and Turtle with out many complaints.
I do not recommend this book to someone in elementary school. There is a lot of swearing and inappropriate language for someone who is in elementary school. I recommend to this book to someone who likes a little bit of adventure. This book is about how a woman becomes closer and closer to a child that was given to her by a stranger.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this book a lot. I recommend on giving this book a chance. You might like it. The women in this book is very willing and doesn't give up. As the book goes on Taylor comes to love Turtle more and more. I do not recommend on someone in elementary reading this book though.
