    Book Description

The authors bring the disciplines of accounting and economics to bear on an examination of the critical role played by the major accounting firms in the ongoing economic recovery of Pacific Rim nations from the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. Accounting firms, through their service offerings, are having an impact not only on economic indicators, but also on longer-term growth prospects and development patterns in the newly industrialized nations of Southeast Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan), emerging nations (Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia) and selected Pacific island nations (including Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Vanuatu). For practitioners in the private and public sectors and their academic colleagues. Demonstrating the full extent of the influence of global accounting firms on Pacific economies, the authors provide an overview of domestic accounting institutions for each grouping of nations in order to lend valuable context to the discussion of the role of international services firms in each individual jurisdiction. For those whose work or academic accounting services in Southeast Asia, or the role in the region of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and various regional development banks and United Nations agencies.

                  4 out of 5 stars Serious technobabble.......2000-12-23

The review of this book by Booknews, Inc. (above) is simply wrong. What this book IS is a collection of papers on the topic of using various computational methodologies - primarily ab initio and density functional - to predict NMR chemical shifts. It is very useful obviously for computational chemists. If you are not a computational chemist, or if you are seeking information on NMR *techniques*, this book is not for you. Also, if you seek a concise technical description on how to run computational calculations, here again this book is not for you.

What the entire set of papers in this book distill down to is use of UNIX-based software packages such as Gaussian 94 to generate geometry-optimized conformers whose cartesians are then exported into the SP NMR mode of Gaussian 94 to determine the NMR isotropic chemical shift tensors. There are numerous descriptions of the applicability of various methodologies to various chemical systems - polymers, crystals, olefins, etc.

The twenty-three chapters include such jewels as: Effects of Hydrogen Bonding on 1H Chemical Shifts, Ab Initio Calculations of 31P NMR Chemical Shielding Anisotropy Tensors in Phosphates: The Effect of Geometry on Shielding, and last but definitely not least, Recent Advances in Nuclear Magnetic Shielding Theory and Computational Methods. My own work in this area suggests that although Gaussian 94 ab initio analysis does a good job generating isotropic tensors that are predictive of chemical shift, computational accuracy may well break down on the introduction of multiple bonding (using Hartree-Fock theory on a 6-31G* basis set.)

This is not exactly bed-time reading (I tried), but many of the articles are well written. Most of them contain useful stuff and I hope to get around to implementing and testing some of the ideas. If you are interested in computational aspects of Comparative Genomics, then this book is a must.

                  Book Description

At the beginning of the post-sequencing era, biology must now work with the enormous amounts of quantitative data being amassed and must render complex problems in mathematical terms, with all of the computational effort that entails. This phenomenon is perhaps best exemplified by the interdisciplinary scientific activity caused by the advent of high-throughput cDNA microarray technology, which facilitates large-scale surveys of gene expression. Biologists must now work together with engineers, statisticians, computer scientists, and other specialists, in order to attain a holistic understanding of the complex relationship between genes within the genome and uncover genetic function and regulation.
Computational and Statistical Genomics aims to help researchers deal with current genomic challenges. Topics covered include:

This book is for any researcher, in academia and industry, in biology, computer science, statistics, or engineering, involved in genomic problems. It could also be used as an advanced level textbook in a course focusing on genomic signals, information processing, or genome biology.

"Typically a reader obtains their first impression of a new book by identifying the authors, the title and the blurb on the back, in that order, and to follow this algorithm would be to have the reader expect that the book is about statistical analysis in microarray experiments, alone. Even a cursory examination of the table of contents and skimming chapters and the color plates might perpetuate this view, but actually the book is much more than that"

                    Book Description

This volume contains selected presentations of the IUTAM Symposium on `Combustion in Supersonic Flows' held in Poitiers at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et d'Aérotechnique (ENSMA) from 2 to 6 October 1995.
The presentations focus on four main topics related to combustion in supersonic streams and practical issues relevant to the development of new propulsion systems: fundamental studies of premixed and unpremixed combustion, fluid dynamics aspects of supersonic combustion, practical systems including Scramjet, Ramaccelerators and Pulsed Detonation Engines, and the application of detonation to propulsion.
Important progress has been made in the understanding of local mechanisms which allow combustion to be stabilized in a supersonic flow; in particular, various mechanisms controlled by mixing, chemical kinetics, viscous heating and shock waves are now well identified. Despite the difficulty of developing experimental work on supersonic combustion, a good set of experimental data is now available, allowing validation of theoretical analysis and models. The main aspects of modelling of turbulent combustion in high speed flows were discussed, including the influence of turbulent fluctuations on the chemistry-controlled phase of combustion and the applicability of flamelet models to high speed flows. The full range of numerical approaches is covered including Direct Numerical Simulation, Large Eddy Simulation, k-epsilon and shock tracking methods. A considerable effort has been made to generalize these methods to the treatment of supersonic reactive flows and to develop new numerical methods taking into account the most recent theoretical work and a better understanding of the underlying physics.

"The stories in Annie Proulx's new collection are peopled by characters who struggle with circumstances beyond their control in a kind of rural noir half-light. Trouble comes at them from unexpected angles, and they will themselves through it, hardheaded and resourceful. Bound by the land and by custom, they inhabit worlds that are often isolated, dangerous, and in Proulx's bold prose, stunningly vivid. In ""What Kind of Furniture Would Jesus Pick?"" rancher Gilbert Wolfscale, alienated from his sons, bewildered by his criminal ex-wife, gets shoved down his throat the fact that the old-style ranch life has gone. Several stories concern the eccentric denizens of Elk Tooth, a tiny hamlet where life revolves around three bars. Elk Toothers enter beard-growing contests, scrape together a living hauling hay, catch poachers in unorthodox ways. ""Man Crawling out of Trees"" is about urban newcomers from the east and their discovery, too late, that one of them has violated the deepest ethics of the place. Above all, these stories are about the compelling lives of rapidly disappearing rural Americans. Through Proulx's knowledge of the history of Wyoming and the west, her interest in landscape and place, and her sympathy for the sheer will it takes to survive, we see the seared heart of the tough people who live in the emptiest state. Proulx, winner of the Pulitzer, the National Book Award, and many other prizes, has written a collection of spectacularly satisfying stories. "

but I haven't read it yet. I bought and read the first Wyoming collection, and I've read a few other Proulx stories in The New Yorker. I think I know what I'll find in "Bad Dirt."

I was born and grew up in Wyoming, in the Goose Creek valley east of the Big Horns, a region that's been compared to the Vale of Kashmir for its complex beauty. (I suspect that's an exaggeration, although it was made by a person who'd been to both places. I hope to go to the Vale someday, and judge for myself.) Many other parts of Wyoming are beautiful, terrible, and strange. I don't recognize find many -- or any! -- of them in Annie Proulx. Neither do I recognize the rather austere and capable people I grew up with among her rural grotesques. (They make me think of Richard Russo's laughably unlikely characters in his Gloversville novels.) I guess city folks like to imagine rural people that way. Annie gives 'em what they want.

I should mention that I bought "Bad Dirt" off a remainders pile for $5.98US.

This is the coda to "Close Range," E. Anne Proulx's blockbuster about life on the range. I liked this collection quite a bit, found it more approachable than "Close Range." Most memorable was "The Summer of Hot Tubs," a hilarious story that you can imagine being told after dinner. It seems that Proulx has lightened up, has let her characters really speak for themselves.

I'm an avid reader, have been for years, and come across many good and sometimes even great books. Bad Dirt is one of the best! From the first story you find yourself in Wyoming, the landscape, the people, the flavor is so real and palpable. I wish every story would be a novel!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible! Just Horrible... .......2007-04-13

The characters are one dimensional, the plot lines meander and go no where, and the narration is tedious to the point of insanity. Wyoming is a wild and beautiful place, but her descriptions are as evocative as a suburban shopping mall. The only reason this book was published is because some of Proulx's other books have been commercial successes. The only good thing about this book is that I didn't pay for it. If you want great short stories, check out Tobias Wolff, Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, etc. Leave this one on the bargain table where it belongs.

This is a great book. Many of the stories had me laughing out loud. I didn't find BAD DIRT as 'bleak' as CLOSE RANGE and POSTCARDS. I almost didn't read it, because I found the two others listed above as just too much hardship and deprivation. I kept repeating the word 'bleak' about Annie Proulx's writing, until I read BAD DIRT. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.

Though this is only the second book I've read by Annie Proulx, I can tell that her style and voice will keep me coming back for more and more of her work. Proulx blends the utterly fantastic with the totally mundane so seamlessly that she can pass virtually anything off in her writing and you'll accept it as commonplace.

Her characters seem completely well rounded in this collection, even when the stories are brief, and she compels you to care about them, though many of them are not what I would describe as "likable."

Just as she describes the state, her stories seem to be about nothing particularly special, yet you find yourself drawn into them and fascinated by their potential. Proulx does not disappoint.
