Some good advice but not much substance.......2006-02-17
I don't know what I was expecting but I was a bit disappointed. I have another book by Radin (Recruiter's Almanac) that is very helpful. This cd set has some good suggestions if you are opening your own firm but not so much if you are currently working for someone else. He touches on a lot of topics but doesn't go deep. Maybe if you've only been a recruiter for one or two years in a small firm it could be educational.

ASIN: 3540405534 |
Book Description
Laser-Tissue Interactions provides a thorough description of the fundamentals and applications in this field. Basic concepts such as the optical and thermal properties of tissue, the various types of tissue ablation, and optical breakdown and its related effects are treated in detail. Special attention is given to mathematical tools (Monte Carlo simulations, the Kubelka--Munk theory etc.) and approved techniques (photodynamic therapy, laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy etc.). The part on applications reviews clinically relevant methods in modern medicine using the latest references. The last chapter covers today's standards of laser safety, with a careful selection of essential guidelines published by the Laser Institute of America. Numerous research photographs, illustrations, tables and comprehensive summaries make this book a useful guide for graduate students, scientists, and medical practitioners. New end-of-chapter exercises provide readers with the opportunity to check their understanding of key concepts and techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2002-06-12
This is an excellent book for anyone working in this field. The book covers everything from the basic theory to the latest applications. Detailed descriptions of each type of interaction mechanism and detailed references on each type of application are given. The second edition has been completely revised and updated. Highest ratings by Prof. Berns and Prof. van Gemert in their own classes. A MUST for your book shelf.
Concise and Practical.......2000-07-09
This book provides a concise review of laser-tissue interaction. It begins by introducing a brief theoretical foundation in tissue optics and moves on to describing various interaction and ablation mechanisms. The chapters are very well organized, the materials are well presented, and equations are used only when necessary. A large chapter is dedicated to introducing various medical applications of lasers in different clinical fields. The materials in this book are very suitable for scientists, engineers, and physicians involved in biomedical optics. However, since the release of this book, significant progress has been made in this area, which requires the author to substantially update information and development in the next edition.

Neverwhere's protagonist, Richard Mayhew, learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished. He ceases to exist in the ordinary world of London Above, and joins a quest through the dark and dangerous London Below, a shadow city of lost and forgotten people, places, and times. His companions are Door, who is trying to find out who hired the assassins who murdered her family and why; the Marquis of Carabas, a trickster who trades services for very big favors; and Hunter, a mysterious lady who guards bodies and hunts only the biggest game. London Below is a wonderfully realized shadow world, and the story plunges through it like an express passing local stations, with plenty of action and a satisfying conclusion. The story is reminiscent of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but Neil Gaiman's humor is much darker and his images sometimes truly horrific. Puns and allusions to everything from Paradise Lost to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz abound, but you can enjoy the book without getting all of them. Gaiman is definitely not just for graphic-novel fans anymore. --Nona Vero

"Special e-book feature: contains three stories - ""Fifteen Painted Cards From a Vampire Tarot""; ""Eaten""; ""Apple"" - not available in print edition. The distinctive storytelling genius of Neil Gaiman has been acclaimed by writers as diverse as Norman Mailer and Stephen King. Now in this new collection of stories--several of which have never before appeared in print and more than half that have never been collected--that will dazzle the senses and haunt the imagination. Miraculous inventions and unforgettable characters inhabit these pages: an elderly widow who finds the Holy Grail in a second-hand store...a frightened little boy who bargains for his life with a troll living under a bridge by the railroad tracks...a stray cat who battles nightly against a recurring evil that threatens his unsuspecting adoptive family. In these stories, Gaiman displays the power, wit, insight and outrageous originality that has made him one of the most unique literary artists of our day."
Customer Reviews:
A delightful book full despite rat-eating violence.......2007-09-25
Gaiman has this way of creating delightful stories even though they might contain less than delightful content: such as biting the heads of off live rats, bloody torture, and sifting through human sewage with a net. This is true in Neverwhere, where the story often turns violent. Somehow, though, it doesn't leave any feeling of nervousness or disgust, which is what grounds this type of story in Fantasy and out of Horror.
I'm not sure how he does it, but I believe it might the wondrous and complex worlds that he creates: in Neverwhere, this world is "London Below", a pseudo-real subterranean world in the tunnels and sewers under London. There are many interesting things happening, that the brutality of certain scenes is somehow made more palatable. Dont get me wrong - this is not a gore-fest, but there are very violent moments, as well as moments of extreme emotional distress for some of the characters... but there's no lasting sting. I associate it with a fine Single Malt: there might be a smokey or even sharp flavor to start, but the finish is pure velvety smoothness.
Another reason that Neverwhere appealed to me is the characters: each was a hard-survivalist on the surface (a requirement of living in the dangerous world below London), but they all had a depth to them that quickly revealed the heart under the hard exterior. I found myself liking every character, no matter how small their part in the story.
I highliy recommend Neverwhere, alhtough it may not be as suitable for younger readers as, say, Stardust
Original, adventurous, and completely enjoyable........2007-09-24
I'm relatively new to Gaiman's work, but I found this novel to be quite amazing. The subterranean world he creates below London is quite strange, yet I often felt as if I were there as I read it. The characters are quite appealing and easy to relate to, and the plot takes many unexpected twists and turns, making for a very interesting and enjoyable read.
Great Writing, OK Story.......2007-09-19
This book was highly recommended, but I found it somewhat difficult to get into. The characters are very sketchily drawn, and the story just seems to wander with no real point. There are plays on the names of several London Underground stations, but they seem randomly selected and don't really add anything to the story. There's no explanation of the talents of the various inhabitants of London Below, or any indication of the alliances/hostilities that require areas/times of safe passage. Some characters seem to move between the worlds and the main character suddenly "disappears" from the world above for no apparent reason other than to bring him below as the narrator. The book is very well written as far as the imagery, but without a compelling story to hold it together, it just doesn't mean much.
A great page turner.......2007-08-28
I was recommended this book by my friend, and I'm not disappointed. After reading this, I also read Stardust since it was by same author, and found Neverwhere to be better (darker). I would recommend this book to anyone who likes science fiction, has vivid imagination, or looking for a thriller. If you've ever been to London (I haven't), you might find this book close to home as well.
Wonderful fantasy fiction.......2007-08-27
I've always enjoyed fantasy fiction, and thrillers. Combine both, and throw in a good sprinkling of self-deprecating humor, and you have the wonderful read: Neverwhere.
I can't tell you how much I loved this book - I didn't want it to end. The world of Door, and Islington, and Croupe and company is entertaining, inventive, and imaginative. I love books where you are actively challenged to use your imagination, but to do so as smartly and whimsically as in Neverwhere is a total joy.
Set aside a few hours to read -- this is a can't-put-it-down-read-until-you-are-dizzy thrill of a book. I can't recommend any recent fantasy book more heartedly, I loved it.

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere.......2007-09-19
A most unique and magical book of fantasy and amazement has now been transformed into a beautifully illustrated and fantastically written graphic novel. Mike Carey, author of the successful Lucifer comic books series (from the Lucifer character in Neil Gaiman's Sandman), brings his own slant and viewpoint with his graphic novel adaptation of Neverwhere. Together with Glenn Fabry, who also illustrated the comic book series The Authority, Carey has managed to not only skillfully adapt the book in a the graphic novel version, but also make the scenes run from one to the next and get the whole story told in under two hundred pages of graphic work, as opposed to the under four hundred page book. Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere serves as an excellent introduction for those who haven't read the book but are interested, and it makes the perfect segue, after completing the graphic novel, to just go straight to the book. Being one of my favorite books ever written, I'm glad to say that this adaptation lives up to my hopes.

Glenn Fabry Rules.......2007-06-27
The story here is top notch. Though not written as a graphic novel by Gaiman (and [....] the novel upon which it is based), It is as good as Gaiman's Sandman stuff. But I think the art here is even better. I've been an admirer of Fabry's since he did the preacher covers a few years ago (though this is NOT painted illustration, it is in usual ink comic style) and the art here is very beautiful, finely detailed, and glossy (unlike some of the graphic novels released by vertigo recently, like preacher and lucifer, which seem to be printed in a duller matte format, almost like newsprint, which I never much cared for). Fabry also did the painted covers for this series which are included in the back. Overall I am very pleased with this one. Definitely one of the best trade paperbacks I have bought in a while. I vouch for it.
Well done!.......2007-06-13
I think the vision of Neil Gaiman has finally been realized in this wonderful adaptation. The BBC miniseries came close but remained rather
underwhelming. Thankfully, Glenn Fabry's illustrations ring true to the original spirit of the book and Mike Carey does a fantastic job at the unenviable task of re - telling Neil's beloved story. Highly recommended.
Very good re-telling of Gaiman's novel.......2007-05-01
Since Neil Gaiman was basically one of the architects behind DC's mature themed Vertigo line, it shouldn't be a surprise that one of his novels would be adapted into comic form. Hellblazer and Lucifer writer Mike Carey is charged with adapting Gaiman's Neverwhere novel into comic form, with Glenn Fabry providing the art. The first thing you'll notice is how successfully Carey is in transfering Gaiman's work to the comic page; managing to retain the theme and atmosphere that Gaiman created in his novel. There is a bit of sacrificing some story elements to manage to fit everything into this TPB, but Carey still manages to hit the ball out of the park in this department. As far as Fabry's art goes, you'll either dig it or you won't, and his renditions of the Neverwhere characters are hit and miss. That aside, this adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere should satisfy fans of his novel, and for those who have never read the book and only know Gaiman through his celebrated comic creations should give a look to the original novel and this more than solid comic adaptation both.
Is THAT how they're supposed to look?.......2007-03-22
As any avid book-lover will tell you, concrete images of the characters invariably form in the reader's imagination as a story unfolds. Defined by the author only by adjectives and actions in stark black-and-white, their appearances will still become solid reality that, in some cases, cannot be jarred.
My wife is pretty unshakeable on the subject. Once she gets a picture in her head, she doesn't want any casting director or comic-book illustrator to muck about with her imagined view. So she approached the new comic-book adaptation of "Neverwhere" -- her fourth favorite Neil Gaiman novel, she told me, but the one she's read most often -- with extreme reluctance. She put it down a few pages in, disheartened by unavoidable differences in perspective.
I know how she feels, but I'm a little more fluid in my view. For me, Simon Jones and David Dixon made the perfect Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect in BBC's 1981 adaptation of Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," and yet I was still able to enjoy the very different look in the 2005 Hollywood version starring Martin Freeman and Mos Def in the roles. Similarly, Gary Bakewell and Laura Fraser, while they didn't match my preconceived view of "Neverwhere" characters Richard Mayhew and Door, were perfectly acceptable in the roles in that BBC miniseries. And I'm equally comfortable with artist Glenn Fabry's interpretation in the new comic-book collection.
Call me wishy-washy if you must, but I'm adaptable. Take the thuggish Croup and Vandemar, the truly evil pair that dogs Door's heels for much of the story. The BBC series and Fabry's artistic rendering couldn't be more dissimilar, and yet they're both right, in the greater context of the story. Both versions seem to suit Gaiman's vision, if not my own.
And for me, that's what matters. I don't care if they match my view of the characters, but I do care how well the story is told. And this story, adapted from Gaiman's original novel by Mike Carey and illustrated by Fabry, is told well.
Hell, it's great. Carey successfully boiled the novel down to its most necessary elements, retaining the flavor and flow of the story with far fewer pages to work with. A lot has been lost, sure, but he's retained the essence of Gaiman's narrative -- and the novel is still out there for anyone who wants to read the full work.

Den: Neverwhere (Den Series)
Richard Corben
Manufacturer: Catalan Communications
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 0874160030 |
Customer Reviews:
A blast from the past (Den 5).......2004-05-19
I just found this one at the back of my collection. It's full of Corben's exaggerated figure drawing, the women even more exaggerated than the men. The characters and settings are improbable - I really wonder why the "fish people" are so bulbously mammalian. The stories move fast, and don't present too much of a demand on the intellect. Good, uncomplicated fun.
Den 5 continues the stories of the Nar stones, the ones at the center of the "Heavy Metal" movie. They date back to the 80s. Corben didn't stop there, however. His artwork and story telling have both developed since then. If you're looking for good comics, you might like Corben. The later work is generally better and certainly more accessible, though. Only the serious collector will try to hunt down the older material.
Corben takes the reader into a fantastic world+adventure.......2001-08-21
A great introduction to Corben's "Den" series and the entire genre of the adult-science fiction/adult-fantasy genre personified by Heavy Metal Magazine and it's many wannabe-copycats (in fact, "Den" was the series that made Heavy Metal a respected publication).
Though "Neverwhere" is mostly action and violence--with the occasional tasteful lovemaking thrown in--the entire series delves into a theological and psychological Lovecraftian epic, so I recommend not just this book but the rest of the graphic novels! Corben's style of airbrushed landscapes, beautiful nude characters, and violent fight scenes makes "Den 1: Neverwhere" for a unique and entertaining graphic novel in an otherwise inflated, saturated, and cliched comic industry.
Graphic novels don't get any better than this........1999-02-10
If you read graphic novels, then you must find copies of the Den Saga as published by Fantagor Press.
Graphic novels simply don't get any better! The story and art are both incredible.
Richard Corben is da man!!!
Visit Neverwhere, where all your dreams come true.......1998-07-13
A bizarre amateur radio experiment opens a portal to another dimension, and archtypical 98 pound weakling Daniel Ellis Nelson steps through. He finds his body transformed into an archtypical strongman's. And that isn't all that's different in Neverwhere. There is evil to fight, damsels (themselves transformed earthlings as well) to rescue, and so forth. In Corben's pen, watercolor wash and airbrush style which set the tone for so much fantasy art of the 1980s.
