My predecessor left this behind, and I glanced at it a moment ago. This is, perhaps, the most useless book I have ever laid eyes upon. ANYONE's gut instincts would have to be better than the scenarios laid out in this book.

This book has got to be in the top 10 of the all time HR nightmares. It is filled with advice that will land any company in court. It gives input on using words to describe performance that are neither useful or measurable. It even encourages the reader to force someone into early retirement because they are onery and cantankerous. I am not certain what decade the writer worked in, but I would avoid this advice. Don't waste your money. I am destroying my copy

This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.

The Virginia Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.

This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.

The Virginia Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. Out in deepest space lurks a force of almost unimaginable power. Explosions of extraordinary violence, are blasting through the Universe every day. If one ever struck our Solar System it would destroy our Sun and all the planets. For years no one could work out what was causing these awesome explosions. Now Maurice van Putten and other elite scientists think they have identified the culprit. It's the most extreme object ever found in the Universe; they have christened it a 'hypernova'. For decades scientists were baffled. Especially disturbing was evidence that these explosions might be coming from the furthest reaches of the Universe, billions of light years away. If this was so, then for us to see them on Earth they had to be on a scale that was beyond our comprehension. According to some, these explosions were so huge that they might even violate the most sacred law in all science: Einstein's famous equation relating mass and energy, E=mc². That law underpins nothing less than our understanding of how our Universe works.

It was not until 1997, when a satellite pinpointed the exact location of these bursts, that scientists began to solve the puzzle. It seems these huge explosions are caused by the death throws of stars twenty times the size of our Sun, which burn themselves out and explode, creating hypernovae. What then unfolded was a chain of events, which would ultimately point towards some of the most exotic wonders in the Universe: stellar nurseries (where new stars are born) and black holes. Observations show that--instead of fading away, as an explosion might be expected to--radiation continues to emerge from the area of a hypernova. This ongoing emission is characteristic of the process of star birth. Astronomers conclude that the hypernova grows rapidly along with other normal stars in a nursery, but burns out when its contemporaries are still in their infancy. The four day EMRS Spring Meeting in Strasbourg, France (June 4 -7 1996) Symposium on "High Temperature Superconductor Thin Films: Growth Mechanisms - Interfaces - Multilayers" was held in conjunction with the Third Workshop in Europe. The benefit of including the Workshop into the Symposium was the advantage of bringing in an additional far larger and disciplinarily more diverse audience and through the organization of the workshop receiving invited and contributed lectures as well as posters which was supplemental to the main Symposium.

The Symposium focused on the specific topics of growth interfaces and multilayers and highlighted the continuing need for there to be active interplay between chemists designing new precursor molecules and depositing thin films, and engineers applying HTS materials with deficiencies and limitations to commercially oriented devices.

The majority of papers presented at the Symposium are included in these proceedings which is divided into 10 sections covering in the first section a wide selection of papers related to substrates, growth and epitaxy induced defects. Continuing into the second section with ultrathin films and grain boundary formation. Section three discusses oxygen ordering, film growth and oxygen related phenomena. So, far I have gotten through the first book for class. I am a person drawn to "story", so this book is one I am reading for my ISSUES OF INTERGRITY class at my seminary, and it really speaks to me (and its not that bad of a read either). Sometimes I am weary about the number of pages, yet the story itself about Father/Rector Tim keeps me glued for hours, which has not happened in a while. There is also a subtle irony in the title, because Tim doubts some in the book if this is where he should be or not. Its almost a transitory title, it could be called "For Now At Home In Mitford" - but I guess that would seem too long.. ha ha

I just loved this book. I am reading the Mitford series and getting to know the characters. It's great to have a respite from our busy world. This book had me laughing out loud in a few places.

Makes Grandma happy.......2007-08-11

My 97 year old grandmother is in love with Mitford. She has macular degeneration and can no longer read with her eyes so she "reads" with her ears. Whenever she is feeling blue or is sick in bed, she just puts Mitford in and says she feels comforted. This was the missing book of her series on CD and we sent it for her 97th birthday. A highly recommended series - the first book may seem a bit slow, but once you finish, you'll want to read the rest of the series.

I bought for a gift for my mother. She is thoroughly enjoying. I will read next as we both share the Jan Karon Mitford Series with equal compassion for this small town.

Must rest a while.......2007-04-21

Having read the first four books of the nine-volume Mitford series, one right after the other, I think I am saturated for a time and need to read something else. Not that there's anything wrong with the series.

In this fourth installment of the Father Tim saga, the author introduces a bit more grit and travail. There are alcoholics who fall off the wagon. There is a rescue of a lost child. And Father Tim almost loses his house in a nefarious plot. But there is also a bit more religious intrusion than usual--or at least I noticed it more. It's all well and good to pray about all the problems one faces, but it's necessary as well to do something more physical to solve them. If, for example, your dog gets hit by a car and is bleeding in the street, pray if you like, but do it after you have seen to the dog's injuries. The dog's life, in this case, was saved not by prayer, I suspect, but by competent and immediate care of the pet.

I really can't fault the writer, however. Her description of people and the things they do, the way they react, is realistic, regardless of my take on the matter.

There are five books to go in the series. I'll definitely read them, but not just yet.

Timeless-Reread it again and again........1999-08-26

I have just reread this wonderfully thoughtful book of poems. These poems draw me back again and again. Each time I uncover new meaning and new feelings. These poems are a companion to every woman as she "grows up" and becomes wiser and gentler. I am anxious to hear Mary Stewarts voice in the next decade.

An exceptional volume of contemporary poetry........1998-09-11

Someone said the power of poetry (and perhaps all art) is the power to make you stop. This is what I found happening again and again as I read "Out of Canaan" -- stopping to reflect, stopping as felling welled up, stopping for insight. The author writes of some very traumatic issues but does so with great artistic restraint, which is the strength, I think of this book. Buy it!

Honest, well-written modern poetry........1995-10-19

This is the first book of poetry by Mary Stewart who also teaches a Poetry Workshop in NYC that is attracting the best writers of contemporary poetry in the East. This collection is well-written, structurally clean, cogent, and, perhaps most of all, from the heart. It makes the reader wonder how one diminishes one life by not confronting one's pains and sorrows.
