          Book Description

In the second millennium b.c., Babylonian scribes assembled a vast collection of astrological omens, believed to be signs from the gods concerning the kingdom's political, military, and agricultural fortunes. The importance of these omens was such that from the eighth or seventh until the first century, the scribes observed the heavens nightly and recorded the dates and locations of ominous phenomena of the moon and planets in relation to stars and constellations. The observations were arranged in monthly reports along with notable events and prices of agricultural commodities, the object being to find correlations between phenomena in the heavens and conditions on earth. These collections of omens and observations form the first empirical science of antiquity and were the basis of the first mathematical science, astronomy. For it was discovered that planetary phenomena, although irregular and sometimes concealed by bad weather, recur in limited periods within cycles in which they are repeated on nearly the same dates and in nearly the same locations.

          N. M. Swerdlow's book is a study of the collection and observation of ominous celestial phenomena and of how intervals of time, locations by zodiacal sign, and cycles in which the phenomena recur were used to reduce them to purely arithmetical computation, thereby surmounting the greatest obstacle to observation, bad weather. The work marks a striking advance in our understanding of both the origin of scientific astronomy and the astrological divination through which the kingdoms of ancient Mesopotamia were governed.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for ancient history.......2004-01-09

This is the most authoritative and significant single volume available dealing with ancient Near Eastern mathematical astronomy. The mathematics may be difficult in places for non-specialists, but that fact alone confirms Swerdlow's argument that the accomplishments of the ancient scribes were impressive and sophisticated. Technical aspects are explained as clearly as possible, yet Swerdlow does not duck larger issues, such as the significance of Near Eastern astronomy for the rise of ancient science. No longer will historians wish to credit the first origin of science to the (non-mathematical) pre-Socratic philosophers of ancient Greece. Everyone interested in ancient science will need to take account of Swerdlow's arguments in this book. It will be a classic, and should come out in a less expensive paperback edition!

4 out of 5 stars The best treatment........2001-05-08

This is the authoritative account. It could be more pellucidly presented, but I'd have supposed that any high school junior who has studied his arithmetic, basic algebra, and plane geometry decently well would have no problems working through the mathematics.

          2 out of 5 stars a difficult read.......2000-01-05

Even with a B.S. degree in physics, I had a hard time keeping up with the mathematical and scientific details in this book. It is very hard reading.

1 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.......2003-12-15

I purchased this book to help me understand the material and to help my review for tests in my organic chem 2 class. The book was helpful for neither task. If you don't already understand the material from class, this book is too brief in its explanations to help you. Also, the practice questions were completely unlike the questions my instructor put on tests - all the questions in this book are conceptual and my class focused on applied synthesis and transformations.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to absorb but not enough!.......2002-10-19

Organic Chemistry (Test Yourself) can be helpful for you if you do not understand lectures and homework is too hard for you. However, if you are seeking for an in depth material that tells everything about organic chemistry, I suggest you abuse your textbook a little bit more than before.

4 out of 5 stars Test Yourself Organic Chemistry.......2002-07-28

I used this book to help me for a standardized exam in Organic Chmeistry offered through a board. When I was taking a Organic Chemistry class, I had been doing really well. However, I was uncertain about how I scored on a standardized exam because I had no idea what it would ask. This book coveres all materials that you need to know for the entire Organic Chemistry series. I took a series which was for Chemistry and Engineering majors, but this book sometimes covered the topics that I never learned in my class. If you want to prepare for a standardized exam or review the entire College Organic Chemistry series, I will totally recommend it! I was placed at 1 upper % in the entire US afterward.

5 out of 5 stars Learn Organic Chem by yourself!.......2000-06-14

I started reading this book before I entered Organic Chemistry classes, and I found that when I started classes, I already knew all of the concepts. The book is in a good format, and the tests helped me focus on what I needed to study for the class. I recommend this book if you need a solid, concise review of O-Chem!

5 out of 5 stars Useful questions and explanations.......2000-01-07

I found this book to be very useful in helping me review organic chemistry concepts. I like the way it asks questions and then gives thorough explanations later in the text rather than immediately following the question like other texts.

Ranging from field and lab experiments to conducting social and personal assessments of the environmental impact of human activities, the manual presents something for everyone, regardless of the budget or facilities of each class. These labs are grouped by catagories that can be used in conjunction with any introductory environmental textbook. All lab activities have been field tested over the past 6 years, and are easy do within a 2 hour lab. Students, regardless of their science background, will benefit from the variety of laboratory activities offered. Relevence sections for each lab have been included to help the student see that he, or she, is doing more than "just counting trees." The instructions for each lab have been clarified and all sections shortened and updated. Finally, the students themselves have had extensive input on how to best improve the lab activities, ensuring that the voices of those most impacted by the manual are also heard.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A660604. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: By 2010, 100 percent of the existing stockpile of Hellfire and TOW 2A/2B missiles will reach their design shelf life. The stock of Hellfire missiles available to support Army air-to-ground combat will be depleted by 2015. Of particular interest to the Aviation community is the Comanche first unit equipped (FUE) in 2009, which will be significantly impacted by the scarcity and condition of this primary weapon. This research employs the Janus Combat Model in a Simulation Based Acquisition (SBA) approach to an Analysis of Alternatives (AOA) in an effort to find a replacement for these legacy missiles. Janus will be utilized to analyze the military worth of a newly proposed missile named the Common Missile (CM) as compared to its primary aviation employed alternative, the Hellfire Missile (HB) . This analysis utilizes an Army Aviation Deep Attack scenario developed within the Janus Combat Model for this evaluation. The objective of this research is to investigate which missile is the best operational alternative for Army Aviation and to determine to what extent it is better. For this research operational effectiveness will be evaluated statistically by analyzing the systems' contributions to platform key measures of effectiveness such as lethality, survivability, and engagement. Additionally, an operational analysis is performed from the warfighter's perspective examining resource requirements and fundamental tactical employment differences between the CM and HB.

                    Book Description

As the first book exclusively dedicated to humanists of African descent, THE BLACK HUMANIST EXPERIENCE gives Black humanists the opportunity to discuss their many and varied reasons for leaving the religious fold and embracing a humanist life stance. As a minority within a minority in the United States, African American humanists often feel isolated and misunderstood. And across the globe humanists are in the minority among Blacks just as they are among all races. These thoughtful essays help draw attention to the vitality of the humanist movement within the Black community while putting to rest many myths about humanists.

Contrary to popular stereotypes, most humanists do not reject religion out of disillusionment, ignorance, desperation, or misanthropy. The contributors to this volume, coming to secular humanism from many different backgrounds, demonstrate that the decision to adopt the humanist viewpoint is based on intellectual honesty and the best information provided by science, history, comparative religion, and other scholarly disciplines. Moreover, they show that a central concern of humanists of all races and nations is the preservation and promotion of what humanist philosopher Paul Kurtz calls the "common moral decencies" shared by most religious and ethical systems.

At a time when faith-based organizations are favored politically, especially within the Black community in America, this timely collection of essays shows that humanism, with its emphasis on reason, free inquiry, moral decency, and justice, offers much to Blacks worldwide.

4 out of 5 stars Black Americans, white gods. Why?.......2003-03-07

More than two centuries ago, Europe invaded, conquered and enslaved Africa. But that was just the beginning. Black Africans were coerced and compelled to throw their entire race out of the skies and start worshipping gods created by their white, male conquerors in their own image -- the ultimate denigration of human dignity. Today, slavery and imperialism have been abolished in the non-communist, non-Islamic world. Yet millions of black Americans continue to pay homage and obeisance to the gods of their ancestors' conquerors. Why? A racial explanation is clearly inapplicable, since white Christians pay the same mindless sycophancy to a god who was an ethnic Jew. And even in America there is no diminishing of the degradation to which black citizens submit every time they offer bribes and flattery to the gods of the white majority.
To many readers, a collection of "How I was cured of religion" essays will seem trivial. But to black Americans who are disillusioned with religion but hesitant to come out of the closet and publicly proclaim their nontheism until they are reassured that humanism is a widespread and respected alternative to superstitious hogwash, the testimony of the book's various authors could be just the incentive they need.
So to persons who see the designation, "Black Humanist," as an invitation to increased oppression: You are not alone. Go for it.

                        Book Description

Perhaps no social phenomenon reflects more clearly the changing values in Canadian society than cohabitation, that is, a heterosexual couple living together outside of marriage. Between 1981 and 1996, according to Canadian census data, the number of cohabitating couples more than doubled, from 356,000 to more than 920,000, and over the same period common-law unions increased from 6 per cent to 14 per cent of all heterosexual unions. In Cohabitation: An Alternative Form of Family Living, Zheng Wu examines the implications of this phenomenon from the points of view of sociology, demography, and economics, using data from the Canadian census, the 1990 and 1995 cycles of the General Social Survey, and the 1984 Canadian Fertility Survey. Specific topics considered include cohabitation trends, shifting attitudes in the populace, how and why people choose cohabitation as an alternative to or 'trial' for marriage, child-bearing, the breakup of relationships, the individual and societal consequences of cohabitation, and the future of this form of family living. In the concluding chapter, Professor Wu considers also the legal and public policy implications of the remarkable demographic shift represented by cohabitation.

Although a little slow at the start, and in a few random places during the novel, I found that I couldn't put this book down, and that I was reading the other novels in the series as fast as possible as well.

The story and plot twists, while sometimes very predictable, are still very interesting, and make for a very interesting read. The characters as well are great, and are one of the best parts of the novel.

Even if you purchase this book and do not care too much for it, I would highly advise reading the rest of the series, as the third and fourth ones are very well done.

5 out of 5 stars A great series to enjoy.......2007-07-07

                              I really enjoyed this series.

The plot was what really drew me in, the epic fantasy intertwined with a little bit of romance. While some plot twists were predictable, they were still interesting, and made for great reading.

I bought the whole series, and raced to read through all the books.

While it wasnt the greatest book I've ever read, I still reccomend it as an enjoyable and engrossing read.

                              1 out of 5 stars Dull!!!.......2007-03-29

Based on the glowing reviews I bought this book as well as part two. I've never read a fantasy novel more tedious than this one. It read like an electronics' instruction manual. The main character's flashbacks the author provided were the worst part--my eyes glazed over when I read them. I definitely would not recommend this book to anyone.

This book was replete with historical details of multiple characters and groups; definitely a laborious trod through too much information and detail. Only determination and hope carried me to the last page. Hoping that book 2 brings some action and intrigue!

This is the beginning of something truly worth reading. Don't be put off, reader, by a few slow spots. These characters will grow and surprise you in the rest of Carol's excellent series. Do you like rich character development, mostly-concise writing, wonderful descriptions and an expanding world that makes sense? Can you handle some violence that has a point and a purpose? Would you like to be challenged personally and intellectually by some of her themes? How about a collection of delicious characters that does not grow out-of-control? (Sorry, Mr. Jordan/Rigney...) Carol Berg is the next great writer of fantasy, still largely undiscovered, so get on the Bridge of D'Arnath for a satisfying ride!
